>> ♪ >> this morning on "action news," the father of an nba star is murdered on the streets of philadelphia. only on "action news" we talk to wayne ellington about this crime. >> some of us are seeing a foggy start this morning and that could slow down the commute from the forecast to the roads, what you need to know before you head out the door. >> and a pregnant woman begging for help from strangers. but it's what she did next that made some of them start to call the police. >> good morning. good to see you. it's 5:30 on this wednesday. weather and traffic with david and karen right now. >> one more mild day and we're starting out that way. take a look as we have some low lying cloud cover across most of the region. the promise of some sun breaking out later but for now, it's not only cloudy but also foggy especially down by the coast. we have a dense fog advisory up until 10 o'clock in all of our coastal counties. in some cases visibility is below a quarter mile and if we take a closer look at this you can see that the fog is beginning to push up a little closer to philadelphia. the actual visibility in philadelphia is still at 5 miles but in trenton we've dropped to a half mile. millville a third of a mile

and obviously a quarter of a mile or below that down by the shore. if you encounter fog take it slow, low beams drive carefully especially with that possibility of animals and pedestrians along the roadside that you can't see. 57 degrees right now in philadelphia though. we are mild to start out. even in allentown we're at 50 and up close to 60 down at the shore with that fog. and as you're heading out the door today to catch the school bus perhaps, it's going to be mild. 50's in philadelphia at 6 o'clock, up to 8 o'clock mid 50, maybe some fog in some parts of the region but obviously on the mild side. otherwise dress warmly for later this afternoon. we're going to be cool this morning with temperatures in the 50's. not bad but still on the cool side. then we get up into the 60's in the afternoon. looks like our high is 66 and that's probably around 1:30 or 2 o'clock. after that, we start to dip and by 6 o'clock, it will be windy and it will be falling well down into the 50's and even colder overnight karen. i'll have details coming up in that seven day. >> one of those days. you got to pay attention to the weather because it's

changing and acting your day. right now it's affecting your morning commute. david showed us how the fog is worse in south jersey and did wear. nonetheless we can see a touch of it in bucks county much this is morrisville bucks county route 1 at pennsylvania avenue. southbound traffic here head towards langhorne moving in moving through some light fog so be careful there. the action cam is on the scene and you have o to see this accident scene here. a look at the number of police and emergency workers in northeast philadelphia. look at the damage done to that vehicle. this two-vehicle accident, they hit each other so hard that car went flying into the lawn of northeast high school. so hopefully they could clear this all out before school begins. in the meantime cottman avenue is shut down right there. you see the debris on the road. someone was injured on the scene. a lot of workers out there. cottman shut down between algon avenue and summerdale. stick to rhawn street or levick street as your alternate to deal with that. in perkiomen a new problem here, an accident involving a vehicle that hit a deer. then you add the fog to the picture you really need to be careful of those accidents. deep creek road blocked at lay

field road, matt. >> thanks karen. new this morning, an unknown man was killed for unknown reasons in north philadelphia. police say the victim was in his 20's and was shot multiple times at close range along the 2200 block of north colorado street just after 11:00 last night. medics rushed him to temple hospital where he died a short time later. police have not told us his name and they also haven't said who killed him or why. we do know the name of another murder victim in philadelphia. he was wayne ellington sr., the father of a los angeles lakers star and this morning we are hearing from the player about what is still an unsolved murder. "action news" reporter katherine scott is live at police headquarters with the full story. katherine. >> reporter: matt, detectives here at the homicide division have been investigating but so far there have been no arrests in this case. the victim's son plays for the l.a. lakers. he's on leave from the team while he grieves with his family.

>> to hear this news as soon as i get out the locker room is just devastating for me. >> reporter: on sunday night, l.a. lakers guard wayne ellington had just been part of the team's first win this season. right after the game, he heard the news. his father, wayne ellington sr. had been shot and killed back in philadelphia. >> i went from a very high feeling of excitement and joy to the lowest i've ever felt in my lifism philadelphia police say ellington sr. was found inside his car on the 5200 block of marion street. he had been shot in the head. ellington's wife of 34 years got the news over the phone. >> i could hear crying, screaming and crying in the background so i knew it wasn't good news and they called me back to let me know that it was worse than what we thought. >> reporter: ellington jr. explains this father played a huge role in his basketball career first putting a ball in his hands at five years old. he later was a standout player at episcopal academy, went on to north carolina to play before being drafted.

his father would always text him before his games. sunday was the last time. >> i don't think it really set into me yet that my next game my dad's not going to text me. >> reporter: and the family wants answers, so do police. if you have any information, detectives at the homicide division want to hear from you. we're live at police headquarters, katherine scott, channel6 "action news." >> katherine, thank you for that. and happening today, a man accused of murder and bank robbery is expected to be in court. dion jordan has a preliminary hearing scheduled in philadelphia court. police say jordan confessed to shooting and killing dallas long last month. but eats also facing bank robbery and other charges. police say he also wore a $1,500 mask and a wig while robbing banks in new britain and philadelphia. jordan was arrested last month after police say he kidnapped a man and held him for ransom. she was pregnant. she had a child with her and she was asking for money to get back on her feet. but it's what she did next that caused a lot of people to

be outraged. erin o'hearn is live at the big board and she's got details. good morning. >> yeah, and this involves a mercedes benz, tam, a mercedes benz or not this woman's behavior was certainly bizarre. here are pictures of this woman who looks pregnant. she's on the side of the street in a california parking lot asking for money. she's holding that cardboard sign right there. you can see the next picture she has a little boy with her. he looks about three or four years old. apparently she stands on this corner every weekend asking for money but one shopper in the area started to get suspicious. melissa smith says when the woman stands on the corner on the weekends plenty of people give her money but recently when smith was getting gas she saw the woman in her usual spot but then after panhandling for awhile, the mother, son and a man get into a mercedes benz. now, smith claims the couple was in the car laughing and countering money and equally disturbing the little boy wasn't in a car seat nor did he have a seat belt on. when the couple stopped at another shopping center to

panhandle again smith started taking pictures so she could show her friends. the couple has no business, in her opinion, asking for money if they were driving an expensive car. >> next thing i know she picks up this big boulder about this big, goes over her head so i don't know if pregnant people can do that, but it was pretty big. over her head and coming at me with this rock. >> so again we're just hearing from that one woman, melissa smith and of course i posted this picture on my facebook page. we're getting a lot of feedback. we encourage you to post your comments perhaps i'll read some of them on air at 6:30. story getting a lot of buzz on social media, matt. >> look forward to your report. thanks erin. hang today a winning lottery ticket that was sold in delaware will expire because as of yet, no one has claimed the prize. someone bought the $25,000 mega millions winner a year ago at the 7-eleven on foulk road in wilmington. who that person is remains a mystery. the winning numbers 20, 30,

32, 42, 71. the mega ball was 15. i'm sure folks here who don't want it anymore can contact them. i'm good, i'm already happy with what i have. >> you know, david you hear about the quiet before the storm. it's like we got the warm before the cold. >> yeah, basically. very mild this morning. storm tracker 6 live double scan once again shows us that we are dry. the one issue we're looking at is fog and we've got that fog tracker feature turned on on storm tracker 6 live double scan and you can see that most of our area, at least the dense fog is extending from about trenton down toward the shore and toward dover, delaware, and in those areas of orange and red we've got visibilities down below a quarter of a mile and in some cases even worse than that. there's also a little bit that's popping up out to the west of the region, south of lancaster and out by harrisburg and anything else you see around the immediate area is going to be fairly light and probably not a problem. of course this could change as the morning goes on so if you hit the dense stuff slow down. seng outside we have some fog

showing up at the shore in atlantic city obviously. this is one of the places where it is thick and you'll want to slow it down, use those low beams and all that good stuff that karen rogers always talks about. we are mild this morning. the temperature currently is 57 degrees. that's today's average high and we're already at it early in the morning. winds are out of the east at three, not all that strong. satellite shows you the low lying cloud cover and by the way when you're driving through the fog you might catch some drizzle on your windshield. out to the west a little bit of clearing, some showers that are falling apart. it does look like once we get rid of the fog after about 9 or 10 o'clock this morning, we'll likely start to see some sun returning today. temperatures are going to be mild for a time. 56 degrees by 8 o'clock, 60 by 11 o'clock and then by 1:30 or 2 o'clock we'll hit our high of 66 degrees but after that, the winds are going to pick up out of the northwest and cooler air is going to start to march in. by 5 o'clock we'll be all the way down to 56 degrees. as we take a look at high temperatures today, 66 in philadelphia and wilmington and millville and cape may and atlantic city. up north a little cooler but not by much.

allentown's high is 63. and 64 degrees in reading, pennsylvania this afternoon. now, let's take a closer look at those temperatures. from now up until later this afternoon around one:30 or so, we're getting around our high temperatures, okay. of, mid 60's pretty much but after that, the winds pick up and we start to see that cooler air descend into the region. by 5 o'clock we're down into the mid-50's in philadelphia and by later tonight, 11 o'clock, when cecily tynan is on the air she'll have numbers in the 40's and tomorrow morning, when i'm back to talk to you about this stuff we're going to be down into the 30's so big cool air change is coming and it starts as soon as later this afternoon. your exclusive accuweather 7-day, 66 is today's high early today. clouds and sun and then we see those numbers dip a little bit. 38 is your overnight low in philadelphia. tomorrow brisk and chilly, a high of 51 and then an overnight low of 33. tomorrow night there's a weak feature coming through. we might get a sprinkle around the region and maybe a flurry, something to talk about but not really anything that's going to impact you. then on friday brisk and cold,

45. pretty much the same kind of day on saturday. and we get into sunday and we go up to 49 but there's more clouds and a coastal feature will spill some rain in through the region later in the day and maybe some wet snow especially in the northern and western suburbs. again, that's sunday basically in the evening. and of course thursday night at 11 o'clock on "action news," the accuweather winter weather outlook is unveiled for this year and we'll find out whether or not it's looking like above or below average snowfall, that's the big thing that everybody wants to know. >> sort of like being forced to take your vitamins and eat your vegetables, you have to watch. thank you david. 5:41 now and a four-year-old boy miraculously survives a 23 story fall off of a sheer california cliff. >> breakfast lunch and coffee with a kiss. cooking at this quaint cafe in philadelphia. karen. >> one of my new favorite places. you can see the fog here in bucks county right on i-95 at 332 particularly foggy between northeast philadelphia and the scudder falls bridge.

depending on where you're coming in from. let's take a look at the suburban report. >> the fog and the weather this morning is definitely impacting your morning commute. when you have foggy conditions we always say you need to be careful of pedestrians, careful of deer and we have both those accidents in this report. first let's look outside live. the worse of the fog is in south jersey and delaware. at times we had been locking at the shot looking more foggy. were there hey own at the roosevelt boulevard, eastbound traffic headed towards i-95 its an area where there has been a little bit of fog and that's also an area where we have a new accident. it's an accident involving a pedestrian. it's coming in to us near bensalem bucks county on route 1 southbound right after old lincoln highway. you've got to watch for an accident, a new accident, an accident involving a pedestrian in an area where we have detected some fog, at least a little bit ago. emergency workers coming to the scene and also the action cam headed to the scene to give you the latest on that accident. in perkiomenville an accident involving a deer. it is that time of year. there's lot of deer out there and with any reduced visibility you need to be careful here. montgomery county deep creek

road is blocked at layfield road. stick to hill as your alternate. the fog is really an issue for the most part in south jersey and delaware and here in new jersey, they have reduced the speeds on the new jersey turnpike itself to 45 miles an hour. that's between exit 7a and exit 12 so you have to travel more slowly there. i want to bring in the latest visibility reports. 5-mile visibility in philadelphia. not that big of a deal, right? that's okay. but half a mile visibility in trenton. .3 of a mile visibility in millville and dover and just a quarter mile visibility along the coastline and you can see just a touch of it out to the north as well in some of our suburbs so not actually in the reporting sites. allentown 8-mile visibility but be careful about that. the other big weather story is how mild it is. 57 degrees feels pretty good as you're head outdoor right now, tam. >> thank you karen. happening today, the state police barracks where trooper corporal bryon dixon was killed will reopen in pike county. meanwhile we learned trooper alex douglas who was injured in that shooting was brought to a new york city hospital

known for special and complicated surgeries on monday night. state police will not give any details about why but they did say it was not an emergency. douglas was shot in the pelvis and has been recovering from that injury. police caught accused gunman eric frein after a 48-day manhunt. officials in ferguson missouri say they're getting ready for the grand jury to finally announce its decision in the killings of michael brown. brown was the teenager who was shot by a police officer over the summer and the grand jury has been deciding whether or not the officer involved will face charges. month's governor says state, county and local police will work together to secure that area in case the decision leads to more protests. he also said that he's prepared to call in the national guard. now, the grand jury has to announce this decision by january but it's actually expected to do so this month. >> president obama continues his visit to chain in a today and and announced a series of new agreements with the nation overnight. president obama and chinese

president made deals on military cooperation and trade. the biggest agreement was on climate change as both leaders agreed to cut greenhouse gases but there were still tensions between the two leaders. president obama pressed the chinese leader on human rights and pro-democracy protests if in hong kong. xi says he wants the u.s. to start thinking as china as an equal. >> cozy new spot to grab a coffee and bite to eat opened up at 15th and south streets in philadelphia. >> reporter: little spoon cafe was started by a group of friends who wanted to create something they thought this stretch of south street lacks. >> a place that people can really be supportive of and feel good about coming to not just because it happens to be on the corner but because it's good. >> reporter: a place where people could grab a cup of coffee, have a bite to eat and stay awhile. breakfast specialties include a monty christie. >> best way to explain it is it's kind of like french toast sandwich but so many more. >> reporter: how could you go wrong with bacon waffle.

>> the philadelphia foundation wants to build a statue to >> the philadelphia foundation the statue of edward babe hefron would stand at second and read streets in south philadelphia where he grew up. he served in easy company during world two and was also known as the band of brothers. he died last year at the age of 90. the foundation held a fundraiser last night in center city to help pay for the memorial. >> hope they raised a lot of money for that out there, too. we have some fog out there. it's not really in lionville chester county. let's take a live look. you're looking pretty good, maybe a touch of it here but not a big issue on route 100 at 113 but from 9:00 until 3:00 each day this week northbound between worthington road and 113 they'll be working on a road widening construction project and they'll block a lane. watch nor later. in bucks county we have construction out there, too, on the pennsylvania turnpike both ways near the delaware valley dave. >> temperatures this morning are relatively mild karen but we're still in the 50's so

probably cool enough for a sweatshirt. probably don't need the hood. i'd keep the sweatshirt handy this afternoon because temperatures are going to dip a little later today and they'll get windier and we're rooting for lasalle as our college of the morning. it's actually homecoming week at lasalle. got some fog out there. it's mostly down by the shore. it is dense everywhere you see the red and the on we've got visibilities down below a quarter mile, maybe less than that and if you're headed out today, we'll be recommending chores in the morning and early afternoon. we'll hit a high today of 66 degrees. that's going to be early around 1:30 or so and then we start to see those temperatures plunge with winds picking up. by 6 o'clock down to 53, matt. >> all right, thanks, david. new this morning, pennsylvania's incoming governor says he will ban gifts to state employees as soon as he takes office. the gift ban was part of an ethical code that members of wolf's transition team are required to sign. a wolf spokesman says the democrat plans to issue an executive order barring gifts to anyone in the administration. governor corbett has reported thousands of dollars in gifts

>> just about 5:57 and the action cam has arrived with a breaking news story that karen has been mentioning in traffic. this is the scene of a pedestrian accident. happened right outside of a wawa in bensalem bucks county about half an hour ago. these are the southbound lanes of old lincoln highway. again in bensalem. the person who was struck in the roadway, no details on the condition of this person. we are assuming that the driver remained at the scene but we don't have confirmation on that. karen will have an update in traffic. >> all right. a four-year-old boy survived falling 230 feet down a seaside cliff in northern california. he had been hiking up a trail with his family when all of a sudden there was no sign of the boy. the coast guard later spotted him on the beach. two paramedics rappeled down way rescue basket to retrieve him. the little boy was awake and crying when they got to him. the child is now in critical condition after surgery an blood transfusion. >> and it's 5:57 now. still ahead the turkey day crackdown. a mall in the northeast says it will punish any store that does not open its doors on thanksgiving evening.
