2:03 am
everybody wonders could this wiptser be as brutal as last year. to investigation i look at building supply of cold air north and big factor in that is speed and oolt of snow covered development through the fall. looking at snow cover this is october 1. this is 31. and snow cover is showing in orange. north america had highest snow he cover on record during september. and by end of october sigh beeria had second highest snow cover on record. that means there's a vast supply of cold air. question where does it go and that depends on jet stream and temperatures are forecast in the next three months above normal eastern gulf of alaska. that's similar to last year. they're also forecasts above normal in central pacific. that means we're likely headed into a weak el nino winter and this combination creates big ridge of warmth in west.
2:04 am
what goes up, must come down. resultsing in big trough in east and this dip in the jet stream will open the door for what is known as cross polar flow allowing arctic air to stream down north from siberia across north pole and south to our region. last winter this very same setup gave us days with highs only in the teens. and it's northern branch of jet stream links up from moisture from southern branch strong nor'easter develops. increased threat of blocking storms can be slow moving and long duration storms. breaking down upcoming winter this is what i expect to see. several nor'easters some with mixed precipitation. that means increased threat of icing and yes, more visits from the polar vortex leading to temperatures averaging 1 to 20 below average. in terms of snowfall, i'm predicting 150% of normal along i-95 corridor giving us 30 to
2:05 am
36" of snow and in the lehigh valley, more snow. 160% of normal 36 to 42". and at the shore where you have mix cutting down on snowfall looking at about 1 40% of normal, 18 to 24". so this looks like another winter with above normal snow and below normal temperatures. time to start looking for those snow shovels. so it's like family everything is relative. it willen cold it will be snowy and you compare to last year last year was 68" it will not be quite adds brutal and last year more than a dozen snow events. we're looking at not as many as this year and bigger ones. last year we had 51 days of snow on ground. i don't think it will be quite that brutal. stay tuned. >> for the last two weeks hi nightmares about the cross polar flow and now i know why. >> there's a reason why. >> it will be coming, cold. >> thank you cecily. >> you're welcome. >> we're getting first close-up
