>> ♪ >> layers are a must when you head out this morning. these bitter cold temperatures will be the deepest chill we have felt all season. >> developing this morning, armed men carry out a deadly attack on a synagogue overseas. >> philadelphia residents could learn today where the city's second casino will be built, if at all. >> 5:30 now. let's go over to dave murphy and karen rogers to take a look at this chilly, chilly morning and what it means for your commute. good morning. >> well, that is the story of the commute and really the story of the day. we have very cold air in place just as we talked about yesterday. you can see the rain is off the coast, cloud cover starting to dissipate. we'll wind up with a fir amount of sunshine today. but, man, is it uncomfortable out there. the temperature right now in philadelphia is 31. 29 in wilmington. 25 in allentown. a little bit better down the

shore but with winds kicking in in the 20's and pushing up toward the 30's, we have a wind chill right now that makes it feel like it's 18 degrees as you step outside in the city. and just 15 in wilmington, 14 in allentown, 18-degree wind chill in trenton, 13 in reading and out in lancaster just nine. a little bit better down south although wind chills have started to go down at the shore in the mid-20's there. as we step outside to catch that school bus over the next couple hours it is going to stay on the cold side. 30 degrees by 6 o'clock. we actually have a chance of getting down into the upper 20's by 8 o'clock. the winds are still a factor as well. and as we roll through the day, no relief. temperatures don't really go very far. 29 degrees by 9 o'clock, 32 by noon and then that high of 33 slots in right there around 2 o'clock before we go back to 32 by 3 o'clock and by 6 o'clock the upper 20's. karen, tomorrow is also cold although the winds ease back a karen, tomorrow is also cold change coming. i'll have details ahead in the seven-day. >> all right, dave let's get the latest on this accident scene. it's gone, all lanes back opened. this is the platt bridge eastbound approaching 26th

street as you head towards south philadelphia. looking much better. we have been warning you about the potential for icy conditions. not seeing any widespread problems with this but there is one spot where we have can concerns in collegeville east third avenue at east main. one of the spots police are reporting little slippery in that area. for the post part the winds have dried out the roads but with rapidly drying temperature it's something we're watching closely. as david says anything that looks slick be careful. here in the northeast extension southbound between lansdale and mid county we've got a disabled tractor-trailer and it's leaking fuel so kind of a double problem out here. blocking the right lane. crews are going to need to clean up that fuel spill so that's an issue there as well. we're getting reports of a power outage here in jenkintown. we may have some dark lights here west avenue near cedar street so just be careful of that as you're headed out, matt. >> thank you karen. the frigid temperatures are no picnic for morning commuter whose must brave the elements while waiting for the ride to work or school. katherine scott is live with some of them at the 69th street terminal in upper darby. katherine, let me ask you, is this a picnic for you? >> reporter: yeah, a lot of cold commuters and a cold katherine as well. it's not just the temperatures, they did take a slide. it is the wind gusts. when the wind blows that's when you feel it. add that to the fact that at this point in the season we're not used to these temperatures. it is a cold commute for people here this morning at 69th street station and you can see a bus has arrived and a lot of people will be happy for that fact because they have been waiting a little impatiently just because the weather is so cold. they want to get inside to where it's warm. winter is approaching so it's not that the cold weather in general is completely out of the blue, of course, but these are the types of temperatures we normally see in january, so some people were digging around from last winter trying to unearth their scarfs and gloves before heading out today. we spoke to some people who say just walking out the door was a huge shock for them.

>> , oh, my god it's ridiculous. it was so warm in my house and then this cold blast of air. i can't wait to get on this bus. it is so cold. >> reporter: and back here live at 69th street station were people are heading on inside to catch their train, some of them having a little extra skip in their step this morning. others are saying that they actually do like this weather, that it's reminding them that the holidays are approaching so here, there's a silver lining involved but just stay warm today, bundle up when you head out the door. live at 69th street station, katherine scott channel6 "action news. >> at least we don't have snow later. that might come later. nearly 100 people were briefly evacuated from a delaware county hotel overnight because of a carbon monoxide leak. firefighters cleared out the best western on the 700 block of baltimore pike in concordeville. it is unclear what caused the high levels of co. the best western is now back up and running.

>> developing this morning, reflection and prayer gave way to screams and bloodshed at a jerusalem synagogue. an attack has left at least four worshipers dead and a number of other people wounded. erin o'hearn is following the latest developments. what's the latest. >> sad breaking news this morning, tam. a brutal attack in an orthodox neighborhood in jerusalem. two palestinian assailants stormed a synagogue and attacked worshipers with guns, knives and axes. now, the two attackers killed four people before they were killed in a shootout with police. israeli police describe the assault as a terrorist attack and said the two palestinian assailants were cousins from jerusalem. hamas the palestinian group that runs the gaza strip praised the attack and said it was revenge for a palestinian bus driver found hanged yesterday. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu called tuesday's attack a cruel

murder of jews who came to pray and were killed by despicable murderers. that was his quote. netanyahu also vowed that israel would respond harshly to the attack. here's an account of what exactly happened from a worshiper who was inside the synagogue at the time of the attack. >> came to pray this morning. we were coming into the synagogue. and we heard gun shots from downstairs. and one shot, two shots and then a flurry of shots. >> our hearts go out to all israelis for the atrocity of this event and for all the reminders of history that come with it. this is -- simply has noplace in human behavior. >> and of course that was secretary of state john kerry responding to news of the attack. israeli police chief said it was unlikely that any militant group actually organized the attack and that's exactly what makes this kind of violence so difficult to prevent.

again, six people in all killed in an attack this morning in jerusalem including the two palestinian assailants and of course this is like to raise the tension in an area that is already on edge. i'm erin o'hearn, live in the satellite center. >> thank you for those details erin. jury selection scheduled to begin today in the trial of eric torres charged with attempted murder in the shooting of officer edward davies. the shooting happened during a traffic stop outside of a feltonville mini mart in august of last year. davies spent more than a month in the hospital recovering from his wounds. a south jersey social worker who was stabbed 21 times is now on life support. this attack happened yesterday inside her fourth floor office at the department of children and families on haddon avenue in camden. witnesses say the victim knew the attacker and has a history of mental illness. police have a suspect in custody. >> today we should find out

who if anyone has won license for a second casino philadelphia. four groups have applied for the license. the pennsylvania gaming control board also has the option of withholding the license. still sources close to the process say the proposal for a casino on packer avenue in south philadelphia has the inside track. that's not sitting well with residents of that area. last week more than a thousand of them packed a hall trying to make it clear that they think a casino in that community is a very bad idea. come to the aid of lots of people living on a prayer. so tonight new jersey rocker jon bon jovi will receive this year's marion anderson award during a black tie gala at the kimmel center. he's being honored for his contributions beyond music. he has been a tireless acts 50 in trying to find solutions to homelessness and he helped organize the 2012 mega concert that raised $50 million to help victims of super storm sandy. >> bon jovi always a wise man, used to always say slippery when wet. >> well, good for him, that's a nice honor. >> yeah. >> he's going have to bundle up and everybody is today. >> richie tambouras well. >> a lot of hair. >> seven-day forecast will show we're getting better in the next couple days. for now storm tracker 6 live double scan shows we are dry but very cold out there. let's take a look at the great outdoors which aren't so great this morning. there's the ben franklin bridge. you can see it bouncing a little bit as the winds are picking up and as you check out the temperature right now in philadelphia, we have slipped to below the freezing mark. 31 degrees, dewpoint down there at 12. that's an indication of very dry crisp air. winds out of the west-northwest picking up a bit now to 23 miles per hour. we're already seeing some gusts a little higher than that around the region and your gusts today will be in the 30 to 35 miles per hour range. combined with the cold that's going to make it feel pretty uncomfortable. does look like we'll see a fair amount of sunshine today as rain from yesterday and cloud cover is getting closer and closer to the coast. temperatures are not going to treat us all that well. we're going for a 28-degree

reading at 8 o'clock and then 31 by 11:00 and 33 is your high at 2 o'clock. really the numbers just don't go very far today. we have a fair amount of sunshine out there. but cold conditions. down the shore high temperatures today will be a little bit better but still chilly in the upper 30's. 33 is your high in philadelphia. and up in allentown, below freezing, same thing in reading. and the freezing mark today in lancaster. and future tracker 6 shows you the wind chills between now and up until about noon, it looks like in most cases we'll be looking at wind chills in the teens and they'll probably get up into the low 20's for part of the afternoon. but not very far above 20 and really these are pretty brutal conditions all the way today. so you want to make sure the kids get dressed up in lots of layers and you, too, if you'll be outside at all. now on wednesday in the morning, temperatures are going to be pretty raw. we'll be down in record territory for p some neighborhoods. i don't think any records will be set because most of them are in the upper teens but we could be close in some of

those northern and western suburbs. lancaster 19 degrees in the morning. on future tracker we do moderate to the low 30's but that's about as high as we're going to go. the difference tomorrow is the winds won't be as bad. in the morning when we're on the broadcast it will still be blustery and we'll probably still have similar wind chills but look at how the numbers go down by around lunchtime, only a 12 miles per hour wind gust and so things are going to get better. basically a cold couple of days. you see a pair of 33's on the seven-day but today will feel worse because the winds are stronger, okay. that's the general idea. not as harsh on thursday, 47 degrees. that will feel a little bit better and even though we drop back to 40 and there's a bit of a chilly breeze on friday, it's still nothing like what we're experiencing the next couple of days. and then we're still looking at moderation over the weekend. saturday sunny but chilly, 44. more clouds arrive on sunday but just in time for folks to go filing down to lincoln financial field for the eagles. it going to get milder, a high of 58 degrees and then monday 64. there is rain but it's rain not snow and even with a

>> ♪ >> breaking news here at 5:45. a plane, a small plain actually crashed into a home in the city of chicago. it happened on the city's southwest side about three or four hours ago. now, we're told that no one inside the home was injured, which is really good news. but it doesn't look very good for the pilot. we don't have any information on the condition, but you can only assume what has happened here. it's actually unclear if people were actually inside the home at the time but as we know so far no one injured on the ground in this small plane crash in the city of chicago.

>> a frightening occurrence you can imagine there, karen, for neighbors in the middle of the night for that to happen. let's see how things are looking for people getting out from the suburbs. >> we know you have to wake up earlier in the suburbs to get out and going and come into work. let's look outside live right now, this is delaware county 95 near the blue route. traffic moving nicely, no problems this morning unlike yesterday with in car fire here on the blue route looking good right now. we've been watching for a slick spot or two. not seeing any problems on your main highways like right here on the blue route. we had so much rain from yesterday, the winds have helped for the most part to dry out the rain but as david has been saying any area where you see ponding if it looks slick from that rain with those rapidly dropping temperatures watch for any icy spots and we are getting reports of icy spots here in collegeville montgomery county. east first avenue at east main street so one thing to watch there. we've got an accident with a tractor-trailer here and it has a fuel spill as well. this is on the northeast extension southbound between lansdale and mid county. it's out there blocking the

right lane. so we'll watch for that because crews will need to clean up the fuel spill. an accident that damaged a pole, they're still out there waiting for that to get fixed on fairfield road is at volpe road. on the turnpike near valley forge we have construction going on in both directions right now. it's in the process of clearing out. looking at your commuter traffic report, we're checking the area. nobody reporting icy conditions or any problems out here, new hanover looking good, limerick no problem, douglas, route 100 no issues right there so that's pretty good. how about the temperatures? it's just 25 degrees in allentown, 17 in mount pocono, 24 in reading. sitting at the freezing mark in millville and just a little under that in the city but when you factor in the winds we have been warning you about this, feels like 9 degrees in lancaster, 18 in philadelphia. the low teens in the lehigh valley. feels a little better than that in millville, about 15 degrees is the wind chill in wilmington. it is a cold start matt. >> you got that right. thanks karen. a homeowner in seattle was ready when a burglar who broke into his home already returned

for round two. andrew myers confronted the burglar while the man was trying to break into his front door. the two men got into a fight on the front lawn which was captured on the home surveillance system. really going at it there. police officers, look at this, were passing by on their way to another call. they saw the two men fighting and quickly apprehended the burglar, took him into custody. >> jay nixon the governor of missouri has declared a state of emergency there. it's a move made in anticipation of huge public outcry whenever a grand jury finally comes back with its critical decision. at issue is if ferguson officer darren wilson should be charged for the shooting death of a teenager michael brown. nixon also activated the national guard. they can be called in if protests erupt over the decision. today the governor is also swearing in members of the ferguson commission as a group tasked with making recommendations on how to deal with all the issues that are being raised by this shooting. the u.s. senate will vote today on the keystone excel
