you all, i'm t.j. holmes. >> i'm reena ninan. we begin with president obama's speech aimed at trying to convince america he has a legal right to act on immigration without congress. >> watched by millions, including a large crowd outside the white house. tahman bradley is live in washington with the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. president obama is traveling to the place where he launched his immigration reform push nearly two years ago. last night in the primetime address to the nation, he knows republicans will fight him, but he's ready to do battle. today president obama heads to las vegas to sell the immigration overhaul. defying congress, he will sign executive hordes removing the threat of deportation for 5 million people livesing in the u.s. legally. >> you can get right with the law. >> reporter: most are parents of u.s. citizens or legal residents. they will be eligible for legal

security incident near the white house. >> a michigan woman with a gun has been arrested. taking part in a demonstration near the north fence. they spotted the gun. president obama was just finishing up his immigration speech. on wednesday a man with a knife and a gun in his car was arrested near the white house. the deadly and epic snowstorm in western new york is now in the fourth day. >> the death toll up to ten with 7 feet of snow in the buffalo area. now the latest danger, roof collapses. like the houses here, you can barely make it out. buried under tons of heavy, wet snow. >> and the snow is still falling. carolyn costello has the latest from buffalo. >> reporter: it's the winter blast that just won't quit. from western new york all the way to michigan. up to 2 feet of snow coming down thursday night. piling up in parts of the buffalo area already buried under more than 6 feet. some people can't get into their

homes. >> i got cerebral palsy, trying to get into the house to her, and the snow is beyond even my control. >> reporter: but others must get out. the heavy snow causing ceilings to cave in. the roof of this nursing home in jeopardy, residents carried to safety. a nearby warehouse has already caved in. people are using shovels and cranes to clear their rooftops before damage is done. >> i got to get up there and shovel. otherwise this roof's going to come down. >> reporter: despite the work of determined fans to clear snow with the buffalo bills, the sunday game will not be played at home. instead it will be played in detroit. when the snow stops and temperatures warm up, melting snow causes more problems. putting more weight on rooftops and the potential for flooding. carolyn costello, abc news, buffalo, new york. the snow will start to taper

off. but the weekend, a bill chill on the way. >> accuweather's jim dickey joins us now. good morning. >> good morning lake effect snow coming to an end. tracked this band that set up off of lake erie. moving south of buffalo. that southward trend continues. more south and west, allowing it to dissipate through the morning. but it's cold across the northeast back into the upper midwest. real female temperatures down below zero in many locations. back to you. safety investigators are trying to figure out what caused an oil rig explosion in the gulf of mexico. one was killed and three hurt off the coast of new orleans. no pollution because gas or oil were not being produced at the time. there were two more arrests overnight as protesters gathered in front of the police station in ferguson, missouri.

the grand jury is expected to make the decision any day now in the shooting death of michael brown. and his father is urging his son's supporters to respond peacefully to the imminent decision. >> destroying property is not the answer. no matter what the grand jury decides, i do not want my son's death to be in vain. >> and police officers in the city of st. louis have been notified they are switching to 12 hour shifts starting tomorrow. despite facing two new allegations of sexual assault, bill cosby is going on with the stand-up comedy tour as planned. including last night in the bahamas. it was a benefit for a women's service organization. he stuck with his usual story telling routine and made no mention of the accusations against him. he's set to perform in florida tonight. ahead, a major stroller recall that parents need to know about. and new details about the

garage sales. a top executive from takata is apologizing for the defective devices. but he says a nationwide recall is not necessary. testifying on capitol hill with some victims seriously injured by shrapnel from exploding air bags. he warns that fixing the potentially deadly air bags will take time. senators want action now. >> the very device that is supposed to save lives becomes a device that is taking lives. >> we are deeply sorry about each of the reported instances in which a takata air bag has not performed as designed. and our air bags are helping to save lives and preventing dangers on the road every day. >> at least five fatales are linking to the air bags. they are facing lawsuits and a criminal investigation. a russian website has hacked nearly 5,000 web cams in the u.s.

you're looking at crews clearing piles of snow off the rooftops in grand rapids, michigan. that storm that's dumped snow across the great lakes and buried buffalo now threatening thousands of buildings. just one foot of snow on a 1600 square foot house could weigh up to 16 tons. flat roofs are most vulnerable. lake effect snow around lake erie. wet roads from the midwest to chicago. roads slick in south florida and the pacific northwest as far east as wyoming and down into central california. if you're flying, airport delays possible in dallas. turn now to the details about the gunman at florida state university. >> 31-year-old myron may was there. and he said that the government was targeting him through a

camera in his home. fsu students gathered for an outdoor vigil yesterday. some shaken by what they witnessed. >> we went up, we were crammed in bookcases. crying, calling parents. >> if anybody has been shot, call 911 on your cell phone. >> suspect myron may was killed by police after wounding three people. one is in critical condition. classes resume this morning. and the library where the incident took place is now reopening. here's how close one student was to becoming a victim. jason left the library as gunfire broke out. he had bullet holes in books. and they found the bullet that caused the damage. a very lucky man. an old brick building in kansas city's arts district is a pile of rubble right now as you can see after a speeding suv plowed into it. the crash was caught on surveillance camera as the driver of a stolen vehicle was

chased by police. the driver/alleged thief was slightly injured. no one else was hurt. a northern california gym teacher was caught on camera trying to force a 14-year-old girl into a swim pool during class. she had an event that day and didn't to want mess up her hair. the teacher could have punished her in a non-physical way. and a school safety officer found himself right in the middle of a lunchtime girl fight, trying to break it up. but then he threw a punch that landed right on one girl's face. his actions were justified, and both girls were arrested and suspended. and a motorcyclist in australia breathing a sigh of relief after this. nearly hit a kangaroo. oh, there she goes. there -- that was a close call. seemingly came out of nowhere. nearly jumped right on to that

bike. it got away unscathed. the driver is experienced, and this is australia. he's used to getting around the australian wildlife. no big deal. >> it was in the way. and adrian peterson said he spoke with his son last week for the first time in five months. he told usa today he won't use a switch to discipline a child again and working on restoring his relationship with his son and becoming a better parent. moving on from the vikings might be best for him and the team. and jack johnson has filed for bankruptcy. the thing is, he signed a $30 million contract. he had given full control of his finances to his mother. now he claims his parents bought a home without his knowledge, borrowed millions against his earnings. it had high interest rates leading to him owing more than $12 million.
