12:01 pm
and good afternoon we begin with a look at the nor'easter that is hitting us at one of the worst possible times. it's dropping snow and rain just as people head out for the long holiday weekend. the change from snow to rain has already happened in center city philadelphia and places south of the city are getting a messy mix. there is a storm warning in affect for several counties, including here in allentown, making the roads a mess. and it's disrupting travel plans nationwide. flights are canceled at philadelphia airport and some flights are delayed. we have a look at the delays on the road and on the rails. we begin with david murphy and

karen rogers, they are tracking the winter storm and what you can expect throughout the day. david murphy is live at the big board. >> about a half hour ago my twitter feed exploded with acity because there was a big boom. everybody wanted to know if it was thundersnow, only the third time in my life i heard it and maybe the first time for you. there is an area where we have an enhanced upward lift and that is approaching the area and i think that will mainly enhance the snowfall around the i-95 corridor and we'll see if we get our 1 to 3 inches, and if it brought enough velocity to bring the thundersnow. we are looking at an awful lot of this across the region, it's coming down for the last several hours, from allentown to reading

and close to philadelphia. and storm tracker 6 exhibits the heavier snow with the lavender shade. we see that in bucks county and north of trenton and then the blue area at the immediate i-95 corridor, a lighter, wetter snow mixing with rain yet and we see sleet in parts of the region as well. but the big story is the snow north and west along the i-95 corridor. that is what we are looking at happening over the next several hours. viewer picture i want to show you mirrors the picture from allentown and some roads are snow covered. this is from my twitter followering, dan. early on during this snow event, we see the snow cover today. the current temperatures are close to freezing in trenton, allentown and not far above it in wilmington, and mainly wet

roads in philadelphia but everybody has to use their thinking caps, if you see the slushy coverage developing slow it down. what can we expect for the rest of the day. lets look at this now, the hardest hit heavy snow in the northwest and it begins as rain as we saw turning to wet snow and snowy accumulation, along the i-95 corridor. we have seen gusts up to 35 miles per hour. a soaking rain and in southern new jersey and delaware, nothing more than a flake or two. the winter storm warning continues until 10:00 for the western suburbs, and advisories elsewhere. i want to show you future tracker 6, this advanced until 3:00 today. we are looking along the i-95 corridor. it's mostly north and west with the change over to snow, that is when we start to see the rain turn to snow, even the interior parts of south jersey, gloucester and jersey and camden

counties and parts of delaware at this point. and we watch it kick on out of here and our thanksgiving day is dry. it's mainly wet along the highways and i-95 and slushy to the northwest and the big, wet snowflakes are reducing visibility, .3 in mount pocono and less than a mile in lancaster, even in philadelphia, under a mile visibility when so many people are traveling here. we watch the precipitation type mainly snow to the northwest, range continuing to change to snow along i-95 and i want to show you a picture of this at route 100 kirkland avenue, see the snow sticking to the roadways, david will be back to tell us how much snow to expect. >> thank you karen. our team coverage continues now

and change back to rain but in the northern suburbs you are stuck with snow. we are looking at precipitation across the region and rain down south and lots of snow up north and in the middle snow is pushing down into philadelphia. you recall a few moments ago i talked about an enhanced uplift that could enhancing snow in and around the city itself and we are seeing that now. over jenkintown and parts of philadelphia and olney and chestnut hill you are seeing the lavender shade and the snow, and that means steadier to heavy snow and it's largely snow and rain mixed in and larger shades of blue that is fairly significant snowfall and it's heavy wet snow in parts of montgomery county, in parts of worchester and green lane. if we go out wide even the areas showing wide ranges of wide we see a lot of snow, it's tapering

down to the south and chester county and it may be we get into a part of the afternoon where it's not as intense as right now. but some snow is piling up on some roadways. as we look out sired, we have the action cam out there, there is mr. eagle, just looking at the snow and saying i don't care. 34 is the forecast temperature in philadelphia, not far above the freezing mark. we expect mainly wet road as long the i-95 corridor, be careful out there if you see the slush developing on the roads, winds out of the north at 12 miles per hour. it gets more blustery as we go later into the afternoon, 33's and 34's on the map, it's milder down south where we see all rain. as we take a look at the winds, it's a nor'easter for a reason and winds come down in that area and it's in the process of getting around us, we can all see wind gusts in the 20 to 30
12:27 pm
miles per hour range. in terms of the precipitation, future tracker 6 taking us through the afternoon, rain to the south and snow to the north for the most part and in philadelphia, a little bit a mix, occasionally you might see rain mixing in, and it gets out at 10:00 or 11:00 tonight. the models are consistent with that, as we look at road conditions begun, mainly wet along the i-95 corridor and slush and visibility is reduced along i-95, if you see the slush develop and the snow coverage, slow it down. rain is mixing with snow and more snow to the north and rain to the south. a high of just 40 tomorrow and the temperatures at the parade will be in the 30s and windchills in the 20s.
