full effect already. oh -- there you go. you can hear it. that's the excitement and chaos of this video. black friday shoppers at macy's in new york city. >> a lot of people braved crowds after the turkey dinner. there were big deals and scuffles as well. here's abc's elizabeth hur. >> reporter: for some, this is precisely why heading out on black friday is a no-go. this playing outside inside a houston walmart overnight, a fight over tv ending with the police separating the zealous shoppers. but for die hard bargain hunters, nothing gets between them and the dpeems and with more stores opening earlier, thanksgiving day sales will rise to $2.6 billion this year.

saturday, i'm shopping lom local. that's a good idea. leave our comments. they are urging shoppers to stay home to send a message about the michael brown case. protesters stopped the sales at the local walmart as they walked through the store chanting. demonstrations occurred at walmart and target stores in the area. the walmart in ferguson was closed overnight as a precaution. but no arrests overnight as protesters stayed indoors, and no national guard troops were by the police station. and they painted murals to show businesses there are people willing to rebuild. >> a lot of people have seen the destruction and the rough parts of this week and the past few months. but there's been a lot of people out here really centered on love and peace and community. >> even with the efforts to rebuild, the city canceled the annual northern lights celebration and parade scheduled

for sunday. two new york state brothers spent thanksgiving recovering from a frightening ordeal. they were rescued after being buried in a snowbank for hours. a snowplow operator had been clearing a parks lot and didn't see the boys on the other side of the pile. they sfrufrd exposure, but they are going to be okay. and hundreds of thousands ofmof americans are without power. the nor'easter plunged people into the dark. the electric company said it's so bad in some spots, it could take days. that's in contrast to the record-breaking temperatures in southern california. >> they are living it up. the deep freeze is on for many americans today. jim dickey is here. >> many of us headed out to shop. a couple trouble spots. a couple spots we're watching.

thousand-room palace. many say it's too extravagant and destroyed forest land and went ahead with it despite an injunction against it. and japan is on alert after a volcano began erupting for the first time in 22 years. shooting plumes of ash more than 3,000 feet into the air. air travel in the country has been disrupted as a result, and the volcano, located 600 miles southwest of tokyo is one of the world's largest volcanos. a long weekend is a good time to remember troops serving overseas not with their families. but they did get to celebrate. troops in liberia were served a ton of turkey and 300 pounds of cranberry sauce with the other trimmings. president obama began what has become a thanksgiving day

it's black friday and a new survey finds this time shopping day, this big shopping day doesn't look chaotic for many of us, it is. 44% out today don't have a shopping list, just looking for bargains. and more than a fourth aren't sure where they're going. the georgetown university researchers say these shoppers just feel they have to be out shopping this week. i feel that way about online. and oil companies have decided not to do anything about falling oig prices.
