manayunk early thursday morning and hasn't been seen ever since. businesses there have since put their holiday celebrations on hold, and just a short time ago searchers and supporters gathered for a vigil playing for safe return of shane montgomery. kenneth moton is live in manayunk with much more, kenneth. >> reporter: walter, it was an emotional scene here at canal right parkas so many played and held vigil for this missing college student. even kildare's that last place shane montgomery was seen was closed out of respect for his family and friends. it was an out search for the ground and waters around manayunk as a community looked for 21 year-old shane montgomery. this morning hundreds pack saint john the baptist catholic church, and got their search areas and then went to work. >> people actually care that much about somebody that they came out and in the the cold, it is overwhelming.

absolutely overwhelming. >> reporter: karen montgomery's son disappeared 1:45 a.m. on thanksgiving after he left kildare's irish pub on main street. west chester university student on break and back home in roxborough left on foot. so cameras are still being checked to try to figure out which direction he walk. >> would i ask that anybody that lives in the neighborhood, if they can hear anything or see anything, go out in their yard and look, and, you know, how he went. >> reporter: marine unit for philadelphia police was in the manayunk canal with the greater philadelphia search and rescue. right now crews are focused on this section of the city. >> it is not expanding. there is no reason to believe that he went far from this area we don't have anything developed, his cell phone was hit in this a area. >> gathering has been unprecedented. >> reporter: once night fall hit family friend and residents lit candles at canal view park across from kildare's and prayed for shane's safe return.
