good afternoon in the news that flu shot you got may not be helping ward off the virus after all. the new warning issued by the cdc. and a truck unloads their newspapers on the highway making for a messy commute. but the big story is the fire that destroyed the home of a local police officer. the blaze won't to two alarms before firefighters could get it under control. david henry is live at the scene with the very latest. david? >> reporter: hi rick, local and state investigators are on the scene trying to figure out how this fire started. they are being extra cautious because this is the home of a limerick township police officer who was away on vacation at the time. >> detective, ernie morris,

rushed home to find his house in a total loss, his family had been on a two week vacation to disney world. lower pottsgrove firefighters arrived to find the house engulfed in flames. >> there is a porch there, and a door and that is where the heavy fire was including the windows and when are going through the house piece by piece, there is nothing to indicate that the fire is suspicious. but because morris is a police officer, they called in extra help from the state detectives and the state fire marshall. >> ernie is a good detective and has locked up some pretty bad characters. we don't know where the investigation is going and if someone was after him i would not be surprised. >> they detected a known

arrived to stop smoke and heavy flames at the home. no reports of injuries. "action news" has learn that philadelphia police have made an arrest in the murder of wayne ellington, father of nba player, wayne ellington jr., the senior ellington was shot as he sat in his car in german town, carl white a career criminal is under arrest in the case, they have credited community cooperation in the arrest. is he currently a guard with the l.a. lakers. a construct worker was struck and killed on a chester county highway overnight. 60-year-old lee boyer was setting up cones on route 42 for a lane closure when he was hit by an on coming jeep. it happened in the westbound lanes near route 100 in north

coventry township. boyer was pronounced dead on the scene and the driver of the jeep stopped at the crash scene and an investigation is under way. thousands of people took to the street in protest last night therks were upset about the grand jury's decision not to indict a new york city police officer, he put a chokehold on an unarmed black man that died during the altercation. the group was heard chanting as they sang christmas carols on the stage. in new york city more than 60 people were arrested during similar protests, they chanted and blocked traffic during the tree lighting at rockefeller center. carolyn costello has the latest now from new york. >> reporter: in new york city hundreds of protesters blocked a major highway and others laid on

the floor at grand central terminal. they were chanting eric garner's last words. >> i can't breathe! >> the grand jury declined to indic indict the officer in the case. the nypd are retraining their officers and implementing a camera pilot program. but his father doesn't think anything will change. >> the video camera did not make a different what do we need body cameras for, a waste of money. >> it was back in july that garner was arrested for selling loose cigarettes. he suffered from asthma and died after being put in a chokehold.

according to the coroner from compression of the neck and chest. while the officer is not facing federal charges, he remains suspended from the nypd. >> there will probably be a civil lawsuit. and the department of justice will conduct a civil rights investigation. fast food workers in philadelphia walked off the job to demand better pay. >> what do we want! >> the action cam was at the mcdonald's at broad and allegheny this morning where workers and their supporters called for an increase in minimum wage to $15 an hour, this is one of many protests that happened across the country today. such walkouts began nationwide two years ago involving hundreds of fast food works. the search continues for missing westchester university

amount of sunshine, despite the facts that high clouds are digging in from the west. it looks like we are socked in with cloud cover but the white indicates high, cold clouds and thin enough to allow the sunshine in. can you catch a little bit of precip on the way but that doesn't look to be a problem for us until late in the day tomorrow. temperatures are on the chilly side, 42 in philadelphia and 43 in millville and 44 in wilmington and 43 in trenton. not reporting down the boardwalk but mid-40s there in all likelihood. whenever we get chilly air in place, that is not really happening all that much. an 8 miles per hour wind in philadelphia, a couple of spots in wilmington and allentown, in double digit winds, they are all pretty low, it stays cool and a high of 44, that is 5 degrees below average, even in early december, the overnight low is 34, exactly the overnight low

you would expect. that indicates slightly milder air coming in, guys when i step inside we'll talk about milder air and unfortunately along with it comes range. there is a change in the forecast for the weekend i'll have that in the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast. many people had to find a different way to work because of a crash involving a newspaper truck, copies of the "new york times" spilled out after it overturned in king of prussia, it blocked the on ramp to 202 north, there is no word as to whether the driver was hurt. police are investigating what caused the crash. >> there is much more to come on "action news" at noon, find out why glass awas forced to postpone the launch of the latest unmanned space capsule. >> and a teenager called 911 after getting stuck in the chimney of his own home.

they hope soon it will be capable of sending astronauts to mars. it did not stop the fun at the science institute in philadelphia, they had a watch party for young space enthusiasts, so with the help of soda bottles, gas and flame, they were able to recreate a smaller but impressive launch of their own. the cdc issued a health advisory of the flu vaccine, it may not keep you from getting the disease apparently, a sampling of flu cases shows that half were a good match for the flu vaccine. the cdc says that when the flu strain has mutated in past seasons, the vaccine is less affective. >> there is a free vaccination clinic for anyone that at a new jersey restaurant, that is the

subject of a hepatitis a square. they are offering shots to anyone that ate at rose's restaurant. an employee tested positive forever hepatitis a. it runs from 12:00 until 2:00 at the fire company. a scottsdale teenager that got locked out of his house didn't come up with the best solution to his problem. >> the 13-year-old apparently thought climbing down the chimney like santa was a good idea, he used an electrical cord to hang on to, but then got whenned. the fire department had to take apart part of the chimney to free the boy.

12. overnight tonight mostly cloudy and getting colder. 29 is the overnight low, it will be chilly tomorrow night and winds out of the northeast at 4 to 8 miles per hour. so at least we don't have a strong wind tomorrow either. high clouds and light winds and temperatures falling through the 40s and by 7:00 we'll be holding on to 41 and then eventually the upper 30s. tomorrow we start out cloudy, there is the 6:00 a.m. future tracker 6 view, tomorrow on the air we'll be talking about cloud cover, some sunshine during the day but generally speaking mostly cloudy. and then 5:00, 5:30, we'll see drizzle in through here but the showers on the doorstep getting ready to push in. and then they come through. by 9:00 most of the area has a chance at this, and because it's friday night, it could be a night where you step out the door to head out to dinner and a movie and it doesn't look that bad and bring your umbrella

continuing with rick williams, sara bloomquist and meteorologist, david murphy. hello again, here are the stories we are following for you on "action news" at 12:30, temple students stage a protest on campus after the grand jury decisions that cleared two police officers and a fire destroys a police officer's home in montgomery county. how the police say the fire started. and hear her dramatic call for help as she took matters into her own hands. now the details, an investigation is underway into a two alarm fire that destroyed the home of a police officer in montgomery county. the fire call went out at 2:30 this morning on commons drive in lower pottsgrove. david henry is live at the scene with the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: yeah rick, state, county and local fire investigators are on the scene trying to figure out how this all started. the house is completely gutted,

this house belonged to limerick township detective, ernie morris, who was away with his family on vacation when it's fire started. they got a call that their home was on fire and they came rushing home to find this mess in the middle of the holiday season. the fire marshall is concentrating their investigation on the front of the house. >> the porch there and the door, and that is where the heavy fire came out through the windows, we'll start there and go piece by piece. >> that piece by piece investigation is now underway, the porch was decorated with christmas lights and it was connected to a timer that turned the lights on and off at night. they think that is the cause of fire but they don't know yet. it could be arson, after all

this is a police officer that put away a lot of bad guys during the course of his distinguished career. but it's looking more and more like the fire is electrical in origin and they are investigating this scene and so far they have not detected any decelerant like gasoline. so that may rule out arson but nothing is ruled out yet. >> thank you david. temple university students are staging their own so-called die-in protest in center city philadelphia, chopper 6 hd is live own the campus where a group has gathered. the students are protesting in response to the ferguson and new york city grand jury decisions not to bring criminal charges against police officers that kill unarmed people. last night dozens of people

staged a protest at 30th street station and then marched to the city hall during the tree lighting ceremony. in northeast philadelphia, at 1:00 a.m. on the 66 hundred block of caster avenue, police say a man was driving down the street when someone fired into the windshield, the man was hit three times in the arm and was rushed to the hospital in stable condition. police in berks county released this surveillance video of a gunman opening fire outside of a barbershop in reading leaving four people injured. it happened last wednesday and police say the man targeted the same store the day before, 11 people including children were inside of the store at the time. police in the lehigh valley say they are closing in on the person that committed an act of

vandalism at a judge's office. they notified police on monday after noticing a smashed window and door at the office of district manager, rick hawk. they hope to make an arrest soon. a large crowd gathered in new york's times square to protest the grand jury's decision for not dating the officer that was responsible for the death of eric garner. they were attempting to arrest him for selling unpacked cigarettes on the street. one officer was seen wrapping his arm around garner's neck and the father of six could be heard gasping, i can't breathe. they ruled garner's death homicide and that a chokehold contributed to it.

this grand jury decision stunned garner's loved ones. >> that grand jury decision, outrageous, that is all i can say. >> u.s. attorney general, eric holder, says that federal prosecutors will conduct their own investigation into garner's death and the new york city police officer is doing an internal probe that could lead to administrative charges against the officer. a chilly start to the day and the sun is shining again. as we look at sky 6 hd over center city. a relief after yesterday's gloomy weather but chilly conditions as well. david murphy is at the big board with a second look at the forecast. >> lets take a look at the clouds, you can see how they opened up and see sunshine, and a break to the west right now, there are patches of darker gray and that is holes in the clouds, that the sun is able to get

through, these are fairly high and thin and i expect for the next two or three hours, it's bright out there. and perhaps thicker clouds coming in late in the day, and cooler air from the west, that will start to push to the east as well. 42 in philadelphia than is where we'll stop, cool air will neutralize any significant rise from the 43 current reading and then we wind up in the 30s overnight. we'll moderate in the seven-day forecast and there is rain on the way and we'll talk about that in a second. 42 at 2:00, that is your high today, we'll hold close to that at 4:00, even though we are looking at colder air it will take a while to get here. finally at 10:00 we are down to 39 degrees, the wider view on stormtracker 6 live double scan, shows you that there is precipitation to the west and it is inching its way in our direction, the air is dry enough where we think most of this will fall apart as it tries to get

here early today and tomorrow. tomorrow during the day, particularly late in the day we could see drizzle and tomorrow night it will defeat the dry air in place and get us wet tomorrow evening. there is a colder portion to this system but it looks like a warm front associated with this will go far enough to the north and we are dealing with rain, maybe a wet snowflake at the start of this for some of you, particularly up north. but it's a rain event. i'll have a look at the full forecast when we come back and let it play out to saturday and the rain may stick around for a while. >> david thank you. overflowing storm drains in san francisco caused at least three sinkholes to open up and amazingly drivers managed to avoid this mess and nobody was hurt. residents are worried that this is only the start of the problem and officials blame the

110-year-old pipes beneath parts of the city. a branch of al qaeda in yemen is threatening to kill an american hostage unless the u.s. government meets their demands, karen travers has the details from washington. >> another video showing an american hostage pleading for his life. >> i'm looking for any help. >> that is luke somers, a photo journalist and interpreter, is he held by al qaeda's affiliate in yemen. in this new video released wednesday night, the leader of this al qaeda affiliate, says that somers will meet with his inevitable fate unless he meets the unspecified demands. >> somers was the focus of a daring attempt at rescue by special forces in one of the

most dangerous sections. after landing under the cover of darkness, members of seal team 6 and other commandos crept silently on foot to a cave on the mountain side where they were hiding hostages, at least six militants were killed in a shootout. the u.s. grabbed six of the hostages, but later learned that luke somers their primary objective, was removed from the cave complex two days earlier. u.s. officials are looking over the video for clues to where luke somers may now be held. authorities in the united arab emirates says an overnight raid landed in the arrest of a woman accused of killing a american school teacher. and putting a makeshift bomb out

sized of the the home of an american doctor. the teacher was stabbed to death inside of a public restroom. abc news is reporting that both victims were targeted because they were american. an american health care worker who may have been infected with ebola is now receiving treatment in georgia, the worker may have caught the virus in west africa arrived at emory hospital in atlanta, this is the isolation unit where the patient is expected to receive treatment. four of the patients with ebola were treated here. new jersey lawmakers are getting their first look at the bridge-gate scandal involving governor christie. this is cochaired by a senate democrat, they plan to make the summary public on monday, it

a florida bus driver is hailed as a hero after rescuing 40 people from a burning school bus. alicia vitarelli is over at the big board with this amazing story. >> the video is incredible, it was in polk county, florida, it took fire crews two hours to put tractor trailer flames out. all 40 children are now safe and sound thanks to a calm and quick thinking driver. >> a driver's cell phone captured the flames leaping from this bus. >> i didn't know it was on fire. on board 38 middle schoolers. >> i looked in the back and smoke was in the back of the bus, and a quick thinking driver, kristina berman. >> she yelled there was smoke in the bus and i immediately pulled over. >> the smoke was so thick, it blackened out the cameras, she
