>>reporter:outside of the lawncrest section of the city they prayed for the fallen firefighter joyce craig-lewis. >> she tried her best to do what she thought, trying to be a hero. >>reporter:the lawndale married mother of son and daughter lost their life battling a fire in west oak lane. the firefighters were in that dark and smoky basement. they pulled back. but craig-lewis did not make it. >> i was telling everybody too, she wanted to be better than the best guy on the job. >> the investigation continues into the first female firefighter death for the city. they will interview her team and inspect her equipment. >> we assume that the equipment is functioning properly.

it's not clear what happened at that moment until there is an investigation. >> her locker is a beautiful memorial. >> she wanted to make sure that the smoke detectors were in less fortunate houses and had a chance, should anything happen. >> i live across the street. it's just sad, you know, she has little ones and she gave her life for her job. >> every firefighter puts their life on the line. this is a matter of showing respect. >> this firehouse and family members say that the goal is to support the family members of joyce craig-lewis. a firefighter that will receive more honourhonors in the coming. >> thank you, kenneth. our coverage of joyce craig-lewis continues.
