>> i've never been good at math. >> it only happens once a century. and we will show you how some adventurous couples are celebrating it. we to want get to the ferocious storm that blasted the west coast. mud lieds, mudslides, a tornado and saturating rain. rob marciano is in one of the hardest hit areas with the latest on the massive cleanup effort. good morning, rob. >> reporter: good morning. look at this. this is unbelievable what a surreal sight this is. several homes completely lost. in this case, this home is completely buried. we talk about mudslides and debris flows, but it's not mud. these are huge boulders crushing everything in its path. and certainly in the case of this home, completely buried. this all started in northern california, slamming in that part of the state. and ended in southern california in what turned out to be a wild morning of wild weather. overnight, new footage of a rare small tornado tearing through

southern los angeles during the rush of the morning commute. just watch as the winds violently whipped palm trees and sends roof tiles flying. >> i thought the house was going to collapse. wind even pulled the door. >> reporter: the tornado damaging at least five homes, leaving residents shaken. >> i heard this noise and like a whistling sound. and i heard a big old thunder, like, boom. >> reporter: californians cleaning up this morning and assessing the destruction from that powerful storm system that brought a respite to the drought-stricken state. los angeles country capturing millions of gallons of waters for its reservoirs, but not without a price. l.a. fire fighters catching this tree falling on camera. tens of thousands without power. and torrential downpours. >> here we go, guys. here's the rescue. push forward. >> reporter: and more dramatic images caught on tape. emergency teams rescuing two people from the raging los angeles river. the powerful waters sweeping away one rescuer. he was later recovered unharmed.

and in san diego, california highway patrol officers handling almost 300 crashes on rain-soaked highways in just four hours. and these less-traveled roads becoming a surfing hot spot. you would be hard-pressed to find any part of the state untouched by the storm. yes, they need the rain, but they don't want to get that much rain in that short of time because it leads to this, dan. we get a bit of a break over the weekend. but there are more storms headed towards california next week. we'll talk about that in the weather segment. back to you. >> not over yet. thank you. and pick up on the fear with the debris slides. many of the people living in the storm zone are in a constant state of threat this morning. waiting and watching the hills above their homes which could unleash massive destructive power. and david wright is also in khama rcamarillo springs this m covering that angle. good morning to you, david. >> reporter: good morning, dan.

looking around this neighborhood, you can truly see the power of mother nature. it's nothing short of a miracle that no one was injured or killed. the people who live in these homes are mostly elderly, retirees who will now be homeless for christmas. this is the before picture. a vine video posted during the last big storm just ten days ago. here is that same view today. as terrifying as it must have been to have your house almost swallowed by a mountain, the rocks and mud bursting inside. piled up to the ceiling. it must have been terrifying. >> it was. hearing the rocks crashing, banging at quarter to 2:00 in the morning. >> reporter: the thing she will never forget is that sound. >> horrible, horrible sound. like a loud crash of thunder constantly. >> reporter: all of the vegetation that was holding the topsoil in place burnt away last year during one of those massive california wildfires. >> i have been here 14 years. we have had heavier rains than we have had, and never a problem.

it's all because of the fire. >> reporter: the worst irony for some of these homeowners is that they had just started digging out from the first mudslide the day before this storm hit. now this. >> i don't know if it was insurance or what, but it sat the whole time. and now the company that had come in and just started yesterday. this is just crazy. terrible. yeah, it is. >> reporter: you know you can't help but think of that ancient greek myth of the guy who was condemned to spend his days pushing a huge boulder up a hill only to watch it roll back down every day. and the thing that geologists are telling us, they can't be certain more of the hillside won't come down. there are burn areas like this all the way down the coast. paula. >> one-two punch for so many. david wright, thank you very much. and more fallout from the hollywood hacking scandals and damaging secrets that are being

leaked every day. the latest, the fight over jennifer lawrence's "american hustle" paycheck. and george clooney ready to take on rupert murdoch. on rupert murdoch over his latest movie project. >> reporter: even more fallout from the cyber attack against sony. new reports of leaked e-mails claim to show jennifer lawrence fighting over her "american hustle" paycheck. angry and lawrence and co-star amy adams were set to earn less than the male stars of the box office smash hit. >> whatever, i don't want to talk about it. >> reporter: other hollywood a-listers now caught in the growing scandal, george clooney. e-mailing about his new movie on the uk phone hacking scandal, reportedly vowing to take on rupert murdoch if he got in the way of the project. even a leaked wish list. sony reportedly wanting lawrence and emma stone for a "ghostbusters" remake. in what's the being said to be

in the morning. >> shocking. >> you look great at all hours, sara haines. but we have to move on now. history will be made in a march on washington bringing together the families of michael brown, eric garner, tamir rice and trayvon martin. all black males killed while unarmed. it's called the justice for all protest. the protesters are calling for an end to police violence. bazi kanani has more. >> reporter: this morning, thousands of protesters on their way to the nation's capital. organizers here getting ready for what could be the largest yet -- >> we're going to tell them about it at the nation's capital. >> reporter: of the hundreds of demonstrations across the country against police brutality and racism after the high-profile deaths of michael brown and eric garner. >> we can't breathe. >> reporter: students at the nation's most distinguished medical schools calling for change with the hash hag hashtag white coats, black lives. staging die-ins at columbia, yale.

>> it's hard for folks to talk about. this is one way to give voice to these issues. >> reporter: congressional staffers walking out of congress this week to make a silent statement. their hands up. the wave of protests and reaction to what activists consider the unnecessary deaths of unarmed black men, including michael brown, shot to death in ferguson, missouri. and eric garner who died after being held in an apparent chokehold in staten island, new york. anger reignited when grand juries refused to indict the white police officers involved in their deaths. their mothers now coming together and speaking to anderson cooper on cnn overnight. >> if eric garner was a white man, he wouldn't have lost his life that day. >> reporter: civil rights groups organizing today's march want a new law to make it easier for federal prosecutors to take over in cases like these. now when protesters reach the u.s. capital today, the senate is expected to be in a rare

saturday session, still working on that spending bill. dan, paula. >> big day in washington. thank you. and i was just mentioning to you guys, i was in harlem last night walking by a peaceful protest. it was a mixed protest, they were all saying i can't breathe. the majority of these protests have been very, very -- >> happening all over america. no question about it. turn it over to ron, leading with 2016? possibility of a clinton-bush rematch. there's a new report out this morning indicating that we could be heading to the rematch. according to the "washington post." allies of jeb bush are telling top gop fundraisers and prospective staffers not to commit to any other potential republican candidates for 2016. the report goes on to say an official announcement from bush could come soon. hillary clinton, of course, is presumed to be running on the democratic side. there's no official announcement yet. her husband defeated jeb bush's dad in 1992.

now to breaking news overseas this morning, isis has shot down a military helicopter. it was taken down on the outskirts of the holy city of samarra. killing two pilots on board. it's believed they used a shoulder-fired rocket launcher. and former nfl mvp adrian peterson may be quitting football after a league arbitrator upheld his unpaid suspension. the vikings running back -- minnesota vikings running back cannot play football again until next spring. this after his unsuccessful bid to be reinstated after he was accused of child abuse. peterson tells espn.com he may walk away from pro football and instead pursue a track career and possibly try to run in the 2016 olympics. and breaking this morning, police in portland, oregon, have made an arrest in friday's shooting outside of an alternative high school. a 22-year-old man is under arrest now. a handgun allegedly found in his car. three people were injured in the shooting. a teenage girl is in critical condition.

and the death of tamir rice the 12-year-old boy so the by a cleveland police officer, fatally shot, has been ruled a homicide. the autopsy results show he was shot once in the abdomen. he was carrying a pellet gun when the police officer pulled up and shot him. the police union president said the officer who has not been charged in that incident did not know that what rice was holdings was not a real gun. and take a look at this. workers at this las vegas car wash were detailing a car when a 1970s oldsmobile made a wide reverse turn and never slowed down. he's caught on camera. he took off. both workers have broken legs. one is hospitalized with a broken back. also caught on camera. a scuffle breaking out at a colorado girls high school basketball game. when a player on the bench tries to intervene, her coach,

allegedly, throws her to the ground. the player was kicked off the team and suspended from school for five days. and the coach was not punished. and finally, also in colorado, a christmas grinch who has a bit of a change of heart. a family who's christmas display was stolen on sunday, they put a sign on their lawn asking for whoever swiped santa and the reindeer to bring them back because their kids were really sad. as you can imagine. well, their wish was granted. the decorations were returned on friday along with a note of apology signed by the grinch. the alleged grinch, the suspected grinch. the little girl -- reported grinch. the little girl and the family are not entirely mollified. they say next year they intend to put their christmas display on the roof. where that grinch or another can't get to it. >> with surveillance cams. >> with surveillance cams. >> they can still get to the roof, though. >> that's true. speaking as an experienced stealer of ornaments. >> don't you see that halo above my head, gentlemen? >> it's not there, paula. >> it's not? >> no.

very nuts. they are out risking their lives riding these monster swells along the coast of portugal. and alexander marquardt is right there. >> reporter: this is what it's like to fly down a moving mountain of water seven stories high. that speck, hawaiian big wave surfer garrett mcnamara. risking life and limb. one of just a few surfers in the world who can handle these waves in portugal, which thanks to him, has become known as the holy grail of monster waves. it was in this same spot in 2013 he rode what may have been the biggest wave ever surfed. thought to be close to 100 feet high. surfers say the waves here are like nowhere else in the world world. formed by an underwater canyon, just offshore that's a thousand feet deep.

and fueled by a storm system farther north in europe that's been called a weather bomb. we met up with mcnamara this week after one heart pounding session. >> right as i kind of started to turn, the shadow came over. the wave had this big shadow because it blocked the sun. it was like, oh, my god. >> reporter: a feeling like no other that has turned a sleepy fishing town into a surfing mecca. for "good morning america", i'm alexander marquardt in portugal. >> that is so -- >> amazing. >> have you been surfing? >> i have. it was a 2-foot wave, i think. >> they don't call that surfing. >> it's close to the shore -- >> that's not surfing. >> it was like the bunny hill of surfing. with those, you can't wreck -- >> you can't wreck, you mean you can't fall over. >> if you wreck, wipe out -- >> you fall straight down. >> speaking as a man who wears water wings in a jacuzzi, i will never be joining that party. >> water wings. >> and a little speedo.

wasn't on purpose. we will explain when you're seeing on the screen and maybe we'll explain what you're hearing off camera coming up. but start with the new developments in the trial of a man accused of murdering a teenager in his own home. the question, was it self-defense? >> prosecutors in montana laid out their case. and now the defense is taking the reins. arguing the homeowner did not have murder on his mind. and aditi roy is in the los angeles bureau with the story. >> reporter: good morning, paula and dan. a lot going on in court. prosecutors wrapped up their case against markus kaarma, arguing the montana man baited the german exchange student into his garage and shot him. the defense is presenting the case, arguing he feared for his life when he pulled the trigger. the defense's turn in markus kaarma's murder trial. the 30-year-old montana man accused of deliberately shooting and killing 17-year-old exchange student diren dede.

>> certainly we're going to and the court to reconsider its ruling. >> reporter: kaarma's lawyer saying he was scared and started shooting to defend himself after the teenager allegedly walked into his garage looking for alcohol. but the prosecution, wrapping up their case friday, played jurors an interview with investigators. telling them that his common law wife, janelle, left their garage door partially open to catch particulars who had previously broken into their home. >> i tried to explain to her how hard it is to catch a burglar in the act. i took the cameras down, you're just asking for trouble. she's like, fine, why don't i do it myself, then. >> reporter: also playing in court, a phone conversation between the couple. kaarma initially telling flager it was pitch dark in the garage. but later said he saw the teenager holding something in his hand. >> i did see he was armed. he had something in his hand. >> reporter: legal experts say

similar protests will be held across the country, including a large march scheduled for new york city. and this unannounced top-secret rocket launch rattled a lot of nerves firday in california. some frightened residents reported seeing a meteor or a fire ball in the sky. a bird or a plane. no, none that have, it was carrying a national defense satellite. and the u.s. senate will convene today for a rare saturday session to get final approval of a $1.1 trillion bill to fund the government through 2015 and avoid a shutdown. and finally, an 11-year-old arkansas girl back home. and let's say she is busted. first she took -- or allegedly took $10,000 in cash from her grandmother and hitched a ride to little rock, arkansas. where she got into a cab. had the taxi take her all the way to florida. why? to meet a boy. >> of course it was a boy. >> she never made it.

a devastating morning with the rock slide. we have mild temperatures, seasonable i should say. tomorrow, 39 degrees in new york city. here come the temperatures, milder, 20 and 30 degrees above average. we'll get back to seasonable levels monday and tuesday. getting snow from this storm in california into the mountains, yeah, they will take it. the ski resorts can use it in the rockies and utah could see a foot of fresh powder, but there will be low visibility until the drier air rolls in on monday. that's a look at what's happening. here what's happening in your local forecast. >> reporter: good morning, everyone, i'm meteorologist chris sowers with the accuweather update. 42 degrees is the high today. we're up to 46 that begins moderating trend tomorrow, 47
