different picture of the man that went on a killing spree. >> the person i knew was not like that, he was always helping, it never led me to believe he would do something against the law. >> he said he sat at the bar and had beers with stone. >> he participated in everything, any time you needed help he was here. >> gilmore was stunned by yesterday's news and all those they never talked about their time in the service, gilmore says there was no indication that stone could be violence. >> one of the regular guys. >> i would describe him as a laid back guy, loving his family and loving his country. >> i know he went to -- >> we are cutting this story short as we go to the news lofrns. >> was actually found in the rear of the 1400 block of fourth street and it was a location that is approximately a half

mile from his home in pennsburg. i'll turn the podium over to tom nolan, chief nolan is the head of the tactical operation and he was leading the operation today as the body was found and rather than my trying to summarize for you what they found today, i'll let him step up and share it himself. chief? >> thank you. yesterday three s.w.a.t. teams from the county were called to three different locations in montgomery to landsdale, to souderton and pennsburg to search three locations, two of those were looking for the possible actor, initially, and a third location we were looking for brad stone in his house, and we searched his house and a neighboring house and a detached garage, he was not located at that time. other s.w.a.t. teams took up overnight and stationed themselves up there in case there were areas to search and this morning, all the s.w.a.t.
4:33 pm

4:34 pm
questions. >> can you say when you discovered crime scenes related to one person and then -- >> it was a very fluid event, certainly as i talked to you about it yesterday. at 4:30 in the morning, the first call came in and then the second calls, as we started to make the connections with the victims of the first two locations, we realized we had family victims involved. and as law enforcement started to distill the information they had, we realized there could be some other targets, it was identify there had was a sister that nicole had, tricia flick, she lived nearby in souderton and chief suggested we do a well being check, at that point in time we had no information that anything happened in souderton but we wanted to check on the
4:35 pm
well being of the family members, we went to that location and initially found tragically, trish an her husband, aaron, we backed out briefly and went back in and found the children. >> as i just indicated, we are waiting the coroner's autopsy report and final determination, but we believe he died of cutting wounds? >> was there a sword found at the scene? >> i believe there was a knife at the scene. >> a rough estimate on when, how soon after these acts he may have taken his own life, or how long you may have been laying there before you found him? >> anything i would say in response to that question is pure speculation, i would imagine the coroner can give us
4:36 pm
that information of how long he was there. >> we don't have information about the timing, but from the injuries that anthony suffered, they were significant cutting injuries it appears to us they were defensive in nature and he was fighting off his attacker, how that event evolved and how things transpired we don't know. we hope he will be okay and able to share that with us. >> any indication like on the phone of what started off this course of events. >> we did not find information on that about his phone, as best we can tell the to individuals brad stone and nicole, had ongoing custody issues with the children and that was a protracted contentious set of disputes, and he made an effort
4:37 pm
to get custody. i would say it's speculation, but from a timing perspective it seems to be related, just another event in their ongoing custody dispute. >> a former marine -- do you know if he was suffering from ptsd? >> we know he was a former marine, he was not to my knowledge diagnosed for ptsd, he was in treatment by supervision of the court for a dui. >> now this is to longer a criminal prosecution, can you tell us any evidence of how long he may have planned this or other evidence of additional people that may have been on the list like a diary, to perhaps kill? >> to be honest, in this point
4:38 pm
of the investigation that was not fully flushed out. when you look at the number of locations and the number of people killed, clearly it was a premeditated killing and planned killing but in terms of how long that was thought out, we don't know that yet. >> it was early morning you went into the home, in souderton and you saw the bodies and backed out, at that time you knew it was brad stone but his picture was not released for several hours later? >> during the course of the early hours yesterday and through the morning and the afternoon, we were making efforts as chief nolan described to locate mr. stone and we had reason to believe during the course of the day that he was barricaded in different locations, so most of the day we were looking for him in these locations and we were methodically going through and thought he would be here, and when we got to the point in the
4:39 pm
day when we realized he was not in any of those locations, we thought it was prudent to notify the public he could be on the loose. >> any documentation -- found by his body? >> no. >> were there any weapons found around his body when it was discovered? >> in terms of weapons, we found one firearm that was in nicole's home and there is another firearm that is missing right now, but it could be with his body, i do not believe his body has been completely moved, so i can't comment on everything found with him. >> in whose custody are the children right now? >> the chifrn are in protective custody and it will be the determination of the courts as to where they will go, but more importantly they are safe and secure. if i can relate, we have a
4:40 pm
number of inquiries about the children and people that want to support the kids, and the souderton rotary has stepped up and agreed to quarterback that effort. chief leery who is here with us now, is the president of the rotary, while they don't have information now there will be a fund established to raise money and collect donations for the kids, certainly in the hopes we can do something for them this time of year, right before the holidays. >> can you tell us about the injuries to anthony? >> anthony's injuries are significant, cutting injuries to his hands and head. >> that he cut off three fingers? >> i believe that is accurate. >> how many died from gunshot wounds and how many died from cutting injuries?
4:41 pm
>> i don't have the specific from the coroner causes of death but i can share with you, that patricia sustained gunshot wounds to her arm and head and aaron sustained gunshot wounds to his head and hands and nina, 14-year-old nina endured cutting injuries. nicole was shot multiple times, patricia hill sustained a gunshot wound, joanne gilbert sustained a gunshot wound as well as a cut to the neck and anthony's injuries were all cutting wounds to the hands and head. >> did you find any explanation whether video or written for these slayings or in video or writing explaining -- indicating
4:42 pm
any remorse? >> no. >> nicoleent to the police recently? >> no. >> how did he get guns, he was being treated for post traumatic stress disorder, according to court records, would that disqualify him from purchasing a gun? >> i don't know about his treatment, he was getting some treatment from veterans court but i done foe if there was a legal prohibition to by fire arms, i know he had a firearm from sometime ago and i don't have information now as to when they were purchased. >> what kind of weapon was the one that was found? >> all the information is there, there is aberreta missing.
4:43 pm
>> what is it like to have this happen in your backyard, in your community? >> we live here in a very peaceful community, we don't typically deal with events like this, and particularly this part of montgomery county, the northern western part of the community, it's quiet there are families, it's just really a wonderful family oriented community, so to have an event like this really shatter, the peace and tranquility of the community is very disturbing, i know that folks around souderton and landsdale and pennsburg will extremely distressed about this, it's not what they see, and i indicated earlier today the people in the community are wonderful throughout the course of this, no matter how upset or disturbed they were by this,
4:44 pm
they were gracious to law enforcement and understood the efforts we were taking and stood together. we are talking with the school districts, in particular souderton school district where the children attended school, they are shattered by this and devastated but they are standing together and making sure that the kids, the families and school community has the kind of support that is needed for everyone to heal. >> from the outside so many people look at this horrible crime and try to understand why, from a personal -- have you lived it, is there a why here? is there a motive? something as to why this happened? how this could have happened? >> i think when it comes to why people do things, we can speculate as to why, i can look at the court filings and say he
4:45 pm
wasn't getting his way and was not satisfied with that, there is no excuse, no valid explanation to snuff out these six innocent lives and hurt a child. it's a horrific tragedy our community has had to endure, we are all standing here today, we are numb for what we had to go through the last couple of days. >> can you talk more about -- >> not yet. >> how long he was in the house? >> not yet. >> you have been listening to district attorney ferman with the latest on this massacre in montgomery county, very, very sad what these people had to go through. brad stone was found about a half mile from his house in a wooded area and we have learned that he died due to cutting
4:46 pm
wounds that were self-inflicted. >> we learned that he used an obviously fatal mix of weaponry and killing some with a sword or large knife and a gun. it appears to be that at this point. he was being supervised by a veterans court and confirm that this former soldier did not appear to have a confirmed case of ptsd. lots of questions here.
