claymont, delaware, apartment building is gone wiped away by an inferno overnight. firefighters scrambled to get everyone out alive, their homes and everything they own gone in the heart of the holiday season. katherine scott is live near the ruins, the harbor house apartments on harbor drive, katherine. >> reporter: and eva, we did just receive welcomes that one person has died in the overnight fire at least one person was taken to the hospital, but we don't know the extent of their

injuries, you can see firefighters remain on the scene here in claymont after a long night balloting this blaze. there are 24 -- battling this blaze. there are 24 apartments affected in the complex. you can see that the flames were just whipping throt homes overnight. -- through the homes overnight. firefighters rescued a person from their apartment. the fire started at 2:30 a.m. at the harbor house apartment complex on harbor drive in claymont. when firefighters got here they were met with heavy flames shooting from the roof of the three story apartment buildings. firefighters attacked the blaze and worked to get the flames under control. the cause is under investigation. at this point, again we know there are 24 units, but there's no word on how many people have been displaced in the fire. we did receive word that one person has died and at least one person is injured this morning, the fire marshal is on scene as

same bar. the action cam was outside the bar at cottman and cottage street. a man got into a domestic dispute and told to leave the bar. after he left, the bar door was locked. police say the man returned and fired several shots into the bar door and a bullet hit a man in the arm. else in the hospital. the gunman ran off. when police arrived, a second gunman approached the bar who was upset that his daughter was inside, he opened fire, police arrested him. >> i think the male was intoxicated, but still you got a guy coming here with police lights on and lots police cars at this location and a male comes in with two guns one in his hand and fired a shot. obviously it could have hit one of us or one of the witnesses. >> as you heard the officer say, the man had two guns on him. police do not know the identity

of the other man. president obama condemned the assassination of two new york city police officers, both married, one a newlywed, the other a father leaving behind a 1-year-old boy. the officers were gunned down by a man upset over the death of eric garner. u.s. attorney general said eric holder said the act was an unspeakable act. we have more from our sister station in new york. >> reporter: this was madness on the streets of new york, two police officers shot and killed always they sat in their cruiser eating lunch. rafael ramos was a father and hulls.he wenjian liu was a newl. standing tall at attention, a

of these -- assassination that these officers were shot execution style a despicable act that goes at the heart of our society and democracy. >> reporter: ismaaiyl brinsley ran to a nearby subway station and killed himself on the platform of the g train. earlier in the day he put this photo on instagram with a post that read i'm putting wings on pigs, they take one of our ours, they take two of theirs, with the hash tag shoot police. the weapon discovered at the shooting was found at the scene. >> we have never and never forget that mission well never forget the two young men who lost their lives today. >> reporter: police are investigating trying to figure

harbor drive, katherine. >> and eva, we're being told one person has died, at least one person has been injured and they are at the hospital. you can see this still remains a very active scene in claymont always firefighters continue to do their work. we are told the fire is still smoldering. they are trying to put out the hot spots. the fire caused a lot of damage. let's go to the video from earlier and you can see how heavy and widespread the flames are. it's the harbor house apartments on harbor drive in claymont. firefighters rescued one person from their apartment. the action cam captured a resident being helped down a ladder from the second floor. the fire started around 2:30 a.m. when fire crews arrived they were met with heavy flames. this is three-story building, 12 units in each buildings. flames were pouring out of the windows and shooting from the roof. the red cross is on the scene offering assistance. we're trying to firm up how many people were displaced.

police department. "action news" reporter, wendy saltzman has the story. >> reporter: the donations continue up until the last minute, present pouring in filling up fire trucks and police cars with a little something special for children in the most need of something to smile about. >> not many people have a lot during this holiday season we need to give a lot more. >> reporter: with medical bills piling up, and families at chop struggle to make ends meet at christmas. >> they are stuck in the hospital. >> reporter: these families spent today giving up part of their holidays to give back to those in need. >> it will bring joy and happiness to them. >> reporter: some of these children at chop won't be able to to go home for christmas, so today the deptford township police and fire departments brought christmas here to them.

as the fire truck and police cars pulled up, they rolled in 6 bin fulls of hundreds of toys. >> we love the kids, we are public servants and this is what it's about. we love what we do. >> reporter: officer bob jones was hospitalized when she was 10 months old. and today they are giving the toys in a way to give back. >> i'm giving toys, because some people don't have toys. >> reporter: this is the 8th year, the deptford township organized the toy drive. each year it gets bigger. members of the community are opening up their hearts and wallets to bring joy to deserving patients. >> it's nice to see how the community comes together and brings toys for the kids. >> reporter: in university city, wendy saltzman channel 6 "action news." >> a new underwater record was

"action news" was there as firefighters battle the the blaze. homes, everything the people own is gone right here in the heart of the holiday season. katherine scott is live near the ruins the harbor house apartments on harbor drive, katherine. that's right, eva, we did talk to the fire chief. we have updated information, he did confirm that one person has died and one person was taken to the hospital to be evaluated, christiana hospital is where the person is right now. we don't know the extent of the injuries. fire crews remain on the scene. the fire is smoldering and the fire investigation is underway here. let's go to the video from earlier where you can see the blaze tearing through the homes overnights these are fierce intense flames. you can see firefighters rescuing a person from their apartment. that was the person who have taken to the hospital.
