>> good afternoon, sarah bloomquist is off, in the news, police investigate an accident that ended with a school bus on the sidewalk in west philadelphia. a new honor for the pennsylvania who took down a gunman how he is being recognized for his brave yessed today. but -- bravery today. but the big story on "action news" is the windy rainy christmas forecast. crowds are beginning to build across the region, as the weather is turning gray and damp and expected to stay that way through the holiday. let's head over to the big board karen rogers is in for david murphy. hi are karen. >> reporter: hi, rick while we're talking about light rain for us, there's a winter weather advisory for carbon an and monroe counties you're looking

at freezing rain. for the rest of the area storm tracker 6 live double scan looks like we'll have showers to the south in delaware and southern new jersey. the idea is that the rain is coming from the south. we'll see the light showers through the region. i want to look at satellite and radar, you can see the clouds are in place, we have holes in the clouds, they filled in now, the rain is developing down to the south. while you're getting wet in maryland starting to reach ground in extreme southern delaware, not hitting ground just yet in south jersey. let's look at the wider view of storm tracker 6 live. the bulk of the precipitation, will not be terribly wet, it will be damp. we have showers coming your way today. it will build and be very wet christmas eve. 37 in reading, 39 in millville. we're above freezing. we're staying above freezing

supportive to police. new york top cop came to the mayor's defense. >> this is a mayor who is committed and gets very little credit to safety of officers. >> the ambush happened so fast, the officers rafael ramos and wenjian liu never saw the attacker coming from a man identified by ismaaiyl brinsley. police say ismaaiyl brinsley shot his ex-girlfriend in baltimore before boarding a bulls to new york making clear his intentions with harsh tags like --ash tag also shoot the police. police around the county are concerned about copy cat attacks. the new york city police department is investigating more than a dozen threats. reporting from washington, channel 6 "action news." >> our coverage of the fatal shooting of the new york city

police officers continues at 6abc.com. there you'll find more about the suspect's background and the investigation. we're speaking with philadelphia police about the precautions they are taking in the wake of that attack. david henry will have that part of the story coming up later on "action news" at 12:30. one person was hurt when two school buss collided in west philadelphia. chopper 6 was over the does he want at 56th and chestnut streets after 7:00 a.m. one of the buses went off the road and knocked out a traffic signal before it stopped on the sidewalk feet away from the buildings. medics took a person to the hospital. no word on what caused the crash. two suspects have been arrested in connection with a home invasion that ended with a 76-year-old woman bound and robbed in west whiteland township. leonard bernard an brianna missilele were captured. about her in and around posed as a home he healthcare worker when

he new york on the door. police say he forced his way inside and pushed the woman on the couch and tied her hands and stole her jewelry. they are awaiting extradition back to chester county. police are investigating an overnight abduction in the fern rock section of philadelphia. one man was kidnapped and beaten before he was left on the 700 block of chew avenue. one person was taken in for questioning. police searched two cars in connection with the case. investigators say they believe the abduction was motivated by drugs. they believe at least four suspects are involved. investigators are looking into a pair of apartment fires in delaware that left a person dead anticipate dozens homeless just days before christmas. one of the blazes erupted in claymont, # miles ray partly. -- three miles apart. katherine scott talked to the neighbors who witnessed the

infernos and she joins us live at the valley complex. >> reporter: the delaware state fire marshal has their hands full today they are investigating two fires in claymont and a third in hockessin. none of them are related. on butternut court we're told there could be a half million dollars worth of damage. 15 units were damaged in the fire and the red cross is asking 12 people who are unable to return home. >> i heard a loud bang. >> reporter: at first it sounded like a car backfire, but they saw smoke coming from a window at 9:15. >> i noticed smoke from the second floor apartment we ran over and started knocking on all the doors trying to get everybody out of the apartments. >> reporter: the flames escalated quickly spreading through the ports on -- unit

block of butternut court. 28-year-old firefighter suffered a head injury and a paramedic injured an ankle. the delaware state fire marshal was back investigating trying to determine what caused the blaze that left the homes in ruins days before christmas. >> there's never a good time for this, but to know that people lost everything, it's sad. >> reporter: a few miles away firefighters were called to a fire in claymont that took a person's life and injured another. the flames advance quickly after the fire broke out at 2:30 a.m. nearly 40 people can't return home. 72-year-old man was rescued and taken to the hospital in serious condition. >> it's still under investigation, we were there overnight working on the fire, there's a lot of damage and structural instability so we have to be carefully going in and out.

we're making good progress on all three of the fires. >> reporter: and back here on butternut court the investigation is on going, investigators have conducted interviews we are and go -- examining the scene once again. katherine scott channel 6 "action news." >> divers have recovered a set of car keys belonging to misses college student shane montgomery. the keys were found in the schuylkill river. he was last seen 3 1/2 weeks ago leaving kildare's public in manayunk. police believe he walked along the river and ended up in the water. nobody was hurt in a robbery at third avenue and 54th street. two men walked into the store and took cigarettes and lottery tickets before fleeing the scene. investigators are hoping surveillance video will lead to the systems. an official in monroe county who helped subdue a

it's seasonable cold it felt cold in the suburbs and lancaster when you woke up in the teens this morning. it's been a while since we've had temperatures like that. 39 degrees in millville. 37 in trenton. 38 in allentown. we'll not go a lot further with the temperatures because we have the clouds in place, satellite and radar showing the clouds are solid right now. here comes the rain that's spreading up from the south. again a lot of this in the immediate region will not be reaching ground just yet. this is coming up from the south today. it's not a significant amount of rain. it will be showers around a little bit of drizzle, future tracker 6 downplaying it at 6:00 p.m. seeing showers starting to reach ground. 9:00 p.m. peppered through the area. we've been watching because the national weather service posted that freezing rain advisory. as we look at this model we're not seeing a whole lot of blue. but in carbon and monroe
