thin out across philadelphia right along that 95 corridor. another batch of moisture will move through as we get into the overnight hours and into the wee hours of the morning on thursday. rainfall we've seen so far more than an inch and a half of rain there in millville. more than an inch in dover. close to three-quarters of an inch of rainfall for lancaster and philadelphia .64-inches of rain there in allentown. visibility, it is a big concern if you're doing some traveling. the good news, the visibility has come up just a little bit in philadelphia where we are dealing with just some light showers. but still low for reading, down to 1.3 miles and down to but still low for reading, down to 1.7 in the poconos. we'll talk about what we can expect for the rest of this evening. still some leftover showers to contend with now right through midnight. ponding on the roads. travel delays an issue as well and as we get into late tonight close to midnight we're tracking near record warmth. we'll talk about all those details with the full exclusive "action news" cast. >> thank you.

in the meantime many people are spending this christmas eve traveling and the weather did slow things down at the airport this morning. clouds and fog caused airlines to delay flights but unlike the day before thanksgiving, christmas eve is not a very busy day for airlines so many were able to reduce the number of aircraft flying in and out of philadelphia. "action news" spoke with one traveler who had a very good reason to today. >> surprising my family. i'm from costa rica originally, i'm a very proud citizen of the united states now but i'm surprising them. i'm excited about the whole thing but i'm traveling the whole day and it's going to be a great time. >> i bet it is. well, most delays at the airport were resolved about an hour ago but you should follow up with your airline if you are flying out tonight or waiting on a loved one to arrive. >> and if you're planning to travel on the roads tonight, some streets and highways have stayed busy all day. >> let's go live to matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center with the very latest on on the commute this evening.

hey, matt. >> reporter: about an hour left in most of the area malls rick and sharrie. if you're trying to get that last minute shopping done in the saint nick of time this evening you're going to run into some delays on the way to the mall like this on 95 in delco, northbound side it's getting better but still backed up here by 322 headed up towards 320. an earlier accident this afternoon got us off to a bad start here on 95. that accident is gone but there's another one in delaware that's certainly not gone. in fact, just the shoulder is squeezing by the scene along 495 northbound at route 13 dupont highway. it's causing big delays to spill back onto 95 where from 273 on up to 495 you're looking at speeds in the teens i would stay local through new castle county instead tonight like maybe up on route two kirkwood highway. in winslow township by the dunkin' donuts watch out for a crash along williamstown road. a crash in solebury bucks county along green hill road at river road. downed wires in perkasie blocking callowhill street. walnut street gets you around that. we'll check it again rick and

christmas dinners. linda jones has 20 people coming over including children and grandchildren. >> turkey, ham, candied sweets pot roast and going to have macaroni and cheese, just the works. >> reporter: at this shop rite in west philly, you would have thought a major snowstorm was hours away. it was just the blizzard of christmas eve shoppers preparing for the you'll tied feast. >> i have kale greens, collards and celery and potatoes and yams. this is my last little bit of stuff high to grab. i'm making cornish hens and a roast, potato salad, baked macaroni and cheese. >> turkey roast beef macaroni collard greens, sweet potatoes as usual. >> you do it every year. >> every year. >> reporter: the hours ahead is an emotional and sacred time and they have traditions. >> i'm making sweet potato pie

the victim is now in stable condition at einstein medical center. well, the holiday will be a very difficult one for one philadelphia family. they lost a loved one in a hit and run accident and police are pleading with the public for information for the driver responsible. "action news" reporter david henry is live at police headquarters tonight with the details. >> reporter: philadelphia police are hoping tipsters will come forward to help them solve this one, the cold hearted hit and run accident has left a south philadelphia family in anguish this christmas eve. >> if anybody can please help, if you're a mother you'll know what i'm going through. please. >> reporter: anna pozzi lost one of her four children last night. 33-year-old theresa pozzi was run down by a hit and run driver left for dead on the side of the road. it happened on the 8100 block of state road around 5:20 just after dark. witnesses say theresa made it

halfway across the street. >> i saw her like walk up to the center line and then she was gone. >> reporter: theresa suffered massive head injuries and was pronounced dead about an hour later. investigation officers were back at the scene today looking for video surveillance footage from the businesses lining state road. they're looking for a dark colored tow truck or pickup truck. theresa's family is hoping for her sake they find it. >> she was a good person, a good heart. she's my child's godmother. >> reporter: her family says theresa had been visiting her boyfriend in prison. they say she battled drug addiction for years but she had been making progress in therapy hadn't turned her life around. >> she was working towards a better life and her life got cut short. >> reporter: theresa had been planning to spend christmas with her family. the star on top of the tree brings no joy this year, only reminding them of their loss. they take comfort only in the fact that witnesses stopped and tried to keep theresa warm

until the ambulance arrived. >> did not leave my daughter on the side of the road like she was nothing. i thank you very, very much from the bottom of my heart. >> reporter: the heartless driver remains at large tonight. the truck that hit theresa lost at least one headlight and probably has other front end today. if you know a vehicle like that with fresh damage, the police want you to call 911 right away. live at police headquarters, david henry, channel6 "action news." sharrie. >> okay, david thanks. let's hope detectives can make progress. it's a bittersweet holiday season for a family who suffered a great loss earlier this year but some volunteers are trying to make eight little bit brighter. santa claus made a visit today to the surviving children of keisha williams. their mother and three of their siblings were struck and killed by a stolen vehicle back in july. well, today santa and his helpers brought presents to help get christmas start add little bit early.

experiencing shortness of breath. doctors are keeping him in the hospital for observation. a close family friend tells abc news that he is doing fine. >> health check tonight. hundreds of hospitals including some in our area are facing penalties for high rates of medical errors and infections. health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman has the list from the "action news" big board. >> the list includes 721 hospitals. there are more than a dozen in our area including some of the big name hospitals. the hospital of the university of pennsylvania, thomas jefferson hospital and albert einstein medical center among others. now medicare payments to these hospitals will be lowered by 1 percent this year. it's based on the right infections and other patient injuries. but despite this overall all hospitals are improving. the number of mistakes has dropped 17 percent in the past three years. some say the penalties send a mixed message because some

hospitals are better at detecting infections. we have statements from some of the penalized hospitals on 6abc.com. and on a lighter note the holidays are a time for giving and thanks to a very special gift, one man is able to enjoy his son's first christmas. last winter 30-year-old andriy taub started having shortness of breath and was exhausted. doctors found he had an enlarged heart and his condition got worse. but at the same time, andy got some exciting yet scary news. he was going to be a dad. >> for most of it there was that fear. i still going to be here, you know, how serious is this. >> reporter: unfortunately it was serious. he and his wife went to the cleveland clinic for a second opinion and learned andy needed a new heart fast. >> they were saying they didn't expect him to live long enough to get a transplant. he was that bad. >> reporter: three days

later, andy was on the transplant waiting list. three days after that, he got his new heart. andy says it saved his life and his family and no gift will ever top this one. >> if not for my organ donor i wouldn't be here. i wouldn't, you know, have been able to meet my son. >> having him home and healthy and happy, you know, it's a blessing. >> reporter: andy is six months out from his transplant surgery. he is doing very well and is looking forward to going back to work as a sign language interpreter in the new year. rick and sharrie, truly is the gift of life. >> nice story. thank you ali. >> quick break. back. stay with us. >> ♪

wake of a hacking attack and threats against theaters. the movie is a satire about an assassination plot against north korea's leader. well, it will open in several theaters in our area andy including the penn cinema at the riverfront in wilmington. >> local barbers took a break from cutting hair to give out gifts this christmas eve. the action cam was there as the owners of black visionary designers barber salon distributed coats to anyone who needed one in wilmington. the salon start add coat drive more than six years ago because 33 wanted to do more for the community. people young and old lined up to get coats today. it is a tradition organizers plan to continue for years to come. it was a christmas eve party for families who have struggled all year long but not today. this was the seventh annual gifts from heaven christmas extravaganza at the shepherd recreation center in west philadelphia. various low income families were invited to celebrate the holiday with fun food and even break dancing.

>> time now for the accuweather forecast. we go over now to meteorologist melissa magee and of course some families traveling and others want to know what the weather will be like. >> sharrie and rick we're tracking showers right now. the good news is the heaviest that of rain on this christmas eve is starting to move off to the north and east. there's another batch that swings in overnight. christmas day we have improvement on the way. high temperature early today in philadelphia coming in at 57 degrees, average for this time of year is 42. the record 64 set back in 1990. so, check out these temperatures right now. we're pick up southerly wind so with that southerly wind overhead currently in philadelphia we're sitting at 63. so, right now we're just 1 degree shy of record territory. 64 in dover. currently millville coming in at 61 degrees. we're in millville already we've seen more than an inch and half of rainfall. the 50's for both allentown and reading at this hour. check out the winds. current wind speeds across the region sustained anywhere from 3 miles per hour in allentown

elmer some light rain overhead. same thing along route 30 there close to mays landing atlantic city, down through sea isle city as well we do have in some light showers overhead. there's another batch of moisture that will move through during the overnight hours with the actual front. that comes on in. visibility, we are starting to see some improvement because the moisture is moving out and winds are starting to pick up as the heaviest moves out as well. down to two and half miles in reading and the visibility reduced to just a half a mile in lancaster and we're up to 1.3 miles in the poconos. let's talk about the travel because a lot of people are out on this christmas eve. if you're expecting someone, we do have some delays in philadelphia up to 110 minutes but at boston's logan down to new york city's? fk and la guardia down into reagan and dulles in washington, d.c. we get the green light so the only place across the eastern seaboard and more specifically here in philadelphia. the other part of the story is that it is mild. temperatures right now are in the 60's. we'll let you know if that warmth holds on for christmas

country this christmas eve. you can watch that following "action news" at 6:00. at least seven people suffered injuries when a city trash truck and septa bus collided late this afternoon. the action cam was at broad and callowhill minutes after the crash. the injured were taken to hahnemann and jefferson university hospitals but none of the injuries are believed to be serious. >> two philadelphia police officers are recovering tonight after a crash with another police cruiser in north philadelphia. cruisers were responding to a call and collided at the intersection. the officers were taken to temple hospital for treatment of minor injuries. authorities are looking for the two men who robbed a convenience store in kensington tonight. happened inside of the friday's mini mart. surveillance cameras were rolling. they demanded money from the clerk and once they had it they took off. no one was hurt but authorities want to get these

two men off the street before they strike again. investigators are also looking for two men who wore female muslim clothing to rob a germantown food market. this is surveillance video from inside the germantown market on the 2600 block of germantown avenue. police say one of the suspects hit an employee several times in the head with a handgun. the robbers got away with cash and cigarettes. if you have any information, you're asked to call philadelphia police. >> and an intense fire destroyed a sadsbury township chester county home today. an "action news" viewer sent us these photos of the fire fight. this happened at a home on old wilmington road just south of route 30. the flames and heat were so intense that the structure actually collapsed. no one was home at the time and the cause is still under investigation. delaware fire investigators have determined that a stove being used to heat an apartment sparked the big fire at the valley run apartments in claymont sunday night. detectives say items left near the stove caught fire and

>> a live look at the christmas eve services going on at the cathedral basilica peter paul. there is another vigil mass at 7:30 and christmas mass at midnight. while so many of us are surrounded by family and friends on christmas day tomorrow there are those spending the holiday in the hospital. today they received a bit of holiday cheer. kelly green hand delivered gift bags to patients at einstein medical center's transplant unit. kelly's mom was a transplant recipient who was hospitalized on christmas day several years ago. it was an especially lonely time for both mother and daughter. kelly says many patients feel isolated and even a small gift can make all the difference. >> my mom as a transplant patient herself spent most of her time in isolation and
