scheduled autopsy in this case. the family says the victims were a couple who were married for more than 60 years. a family in pain, coming to grips with the fact that during the joyous holiday season they must make plans to bury a mother and a father. >> we had great parents. the most lovely person. >> reporter: retired factory worker 87-year-old pedro morales and his wife 88 year old miriam vega perished in this fire that ripped through their home in reading last night. neighbor anna dell cruise heard screams for help from the couple's daughter who looked after the elderly parents. [speaking foreign language] >> the interpreter: she was saying my mother, my father, they're suffocating. help me. >> reporter: she says firefighters responded quickly but the blaze was intense. family members say a son an daughter of the couple tried to enter the burning building but were stopped. [speaking foreign language] >> the interpreter: the

firefighters, the smoke, it was too much. >> reporter: family members say both victims had been diagnosed with almost heim, their bodies found in a first floor bedroom used by the couple. one unusual aspect, the family says a son had been called to the house yesterday morning after his sister had smelled smoke. >> my sister talked to my brother saying she was smelling like smoke, like fire and he came over and he checked and he didn't find nothing wrong. >> reporter: that call was about 10 hours before the fatal fire. the fire marshal's office is conducting an investigation into the origin and cause of the blaze. as we say that investigation continues this evening aiding the fire marshal's office we're told are investigators with the reading police department. live in reading, john rawlins channel6 "action news." monica. >> thank you john. new information on a breaking story from glenolden delaware county for you right now. chopper 6 hd over a crash involving three vehicles moments ago here in the 100 block of south chester pike. now, witnesses are telling us

police tried to stop a vehicle and then that the driver took off and was somehow involved in the accident. those witnesses say the driver who fled from police has died at the scene. we are still gathering more information on this breaking story for you at this hour. officials say the south jersey police officer who hit and killed a 10-year-old boy last night was responding to an urgent call. matthew mccloskey and two friends were walking to a sleep overin franklin township when it happened. they were walking with two adults. families say matthew started to cross the street as others saw a fast approaching vehicle. they called for matt to come back but it was too late. the witness says the cruiser's lights and sirens were not activated. we'll have the full story for you coming up in a live report at 6:00. philadelphia police are asking for your help locating a man with a medical condition who has been missing for more than a week. 22-year-old bresheeed cook was last seen december 21st in

olney. he's known to frequent the area of c street and allegheny avenue. cook's family sales he does not drive or have a cell phone and he does need medication. he's five-temperature and 145 pounds. anyone with information is asked to call northwest detectives. the number on your screen is (215)686-3353. turning now to the onto going relief at the pump. gas prices are now hovering well below the three dollars a gallon mark. the national average is actually sitting at $2.29 so taking a look close to here for philadelphia drivers the average for a regular gallon here $2.63. in south jersey believe it or not the prices are actually hitting the same as the national average and in delaware a gallon there costing $2.46. now, new jersey correspondent nora muchanic joining us live from trenton. nora you spoke with one analyst who said we could enjoy these low prices well into the new year. >> reporter: sharrie, this

is a great way to start 2015 with prices at the pump still dropping. now, there are several gas stations in ocean county where gas is under two dollars a gallon and drivers are lining up there to fill their tanks. >> oh the like christmas. they're giving gas away. i'm surprised. >> reporter: when you see $1.95 a gallon, what did you knowy did you think? >> the old days. >> got to fill up. drivers are practically giddy pulling up to the pumps at this costco on route 70 in brick. that's where regular gasoline is selling for $1.95 a gallon, the lowest price anywhere in the state of new jersey. >> it's half the price now to fill up on this truck. so it means a lot. we could do more. tomorrow we're driving down to smithville because it's so inexpense seven. the line of cars were 10 deep when we visited the station. they have to put out cones and direct traffic at times but drivers don't seem to mind. >> price is incredible. i couldn't go anyplace else no matter what the line is. >> reporter: and when you see $1.95 a gallon --

>> unbelievable. >> reporter: gas prices have continue to do drop because there's a glut of oil. production remains high even though demand is down. that's great news for consumers who oil analysts say will be saving a bundle. >> 2015 is going to be a much, much cheaper year for everyone. we're anticipating probably $120 billion of additional disposable income. >> reporter: that's money that goes into your pocket instead of the pump. >> well, it definitely helps out. i come here mostly because of the prices and it's on the way to work. so it's definitely helpful to have them a lot cheaper than what we've done. >> reporter: tom buck is heading to florida soon and was gassing up his motor home. >> used to cost me about $200. i'm hoping it's going to be a little over a hundred this time. >> reporter: look at the pump. buckley filled his tank for under a hundred and couldn't be happier. >> it's the first time in years that it's been under hundred dollars. >> reporter: how does that feel? >> feels great. i love it. man, i'll tell you i wish it could be like this all the

"action news" director ducis rodgers joining us with a disappointing end to the season. >> we had known their fate for a week but that didn't make it easier to digest. the birds missed the playoffs for the third time in the past four years. it's been six seasons since they won a playoff game. no game planning for a post season contest. players came in early this morning for exit interviews and to clean out their lockers. there will be changes this off season there always are. coach kelly says he'll not only take a close look at his

fire officials as you can see there on your screen. they tell us the accident involve an overturned truck resulting that all westbound lanes are now being shut down. this is actually the ramp to four -- to 422 again over lower pottsgrove. as we take a look from chopper 6 hd you can see what fire officials are dealing with there. this all began about 3:50. no word on what caused the truck to overturn. of course, as we get more information, we'll bring it to you. so far no one has been transported from the scene. >> all right speaking of traffic let's get more on our "action news" traffic report on that and elsewhere with matt pelman. >> matt is in the traffic center. hey, matt. >> we're needing to get creative to get around these problems like the 422 situation claw closing all the westbound lanes between armand hammer boulevard and 724. they just started letting the left lane by but the right lane and on-ramp remain blocked because of that overturned trash truck that caught fire. what a mess and speeds are also still a mess, just 7 miles per hour as you come west of limerick.

so i'd stay local on ridge pike and high street or down on 724 as alternates. meanwhile out to delco we're here on the blue route 476 northbound between broomall and villanova. still have this crash taking out the right lane. just the two left lanes squeezing by. and we're looking at a major backlog. if you come north of the route 1 media bypass through this point in fact look at the parked traffic here close to broomall. not moving whatsoever. again, alternates to the blue route always include 320 or 252. they're going to be a much better bet than this mess on the northbound side of 476. meanwhile in glenolden route 13 chester pike remains closed because of the crash that resulted in a fire near gardener avenue by the nail salon. i want to stay up on baltimore pike or macdade boulevard to get around that. other situations we're watching too monica and sharrie. we'll keep doing that in the next half hour. >> thank you matt. much more to come on "action news" tonight the den toll has climbed from that ferry disaster near italy. the very latest on the rescue operation coming up. cecily. >> we hit a mild high of

>> the italian coast guard raised the death toll to 10 after two more bodies were recovered. helicopter rescuers evacuated hundreds of people trapped on board a ferry that caught fire off albania yesterday. the massive blaze brock out on the ship's car deck just before dawn. survivors say there was confusion and chaos in the moments right after the fire started. >> it was no alarm no communication, nobody to tell us what to do. high to look for myself to find the life jacket. i had to put it on my kids by myself. nobody was there to -- okay, it was a panic. it was crazy. >> 427 people including 56 crew members have been rescued from that ferry. italian authorities say two

boats will remain in the adriatic sea to continue searching for folks who may still be missing. turning to health check now the flu continues to spread. the cdc announced it has now officially reached the epidemic level. >> health reporter registered nurse ali gorman at the big board with more on that. >> you can see some of the cdc map. all the states in our area pennsylvania delaware and now new jersey have widespread activity. nationally we're at the level where the number of cases has hit the epidemic threshold we don't hit this level every year but we do most years and doctors expect this year to be especially bad. the predominant strain going around tends to cause a lot of illness and it has mutated or changed. so the vaccine does not protect against all cases of this strain. the flu shot is still recommended because it will protect you against other strains but it's also vital to make sure that you and your familiar are washing your

hands frequently and of course stay away from others who are sick. officials in scotland say they have a confirmed case of ebola. the patient is a healthcare worker who returned from west africa. he is in isolation. meanwhile in the u.s. the fda approved another wrapped ebola test for emergency use. it works by detecting the dna of the virus in about three hours. it will help identify patients faster so that they can be isolated and treated earlier. and it is almost new year's which means many people are thinking about resolutions. of course one of the most popular res looks center city to lose weight or to eat healthier. and one of the best tricks to help you do this is tracking what you eat either write it down or use an app like my fitness pal to track your calories fat, protein and sugar. cutting down on sugar is one sure fire way to lose weight. >> adding in a goal to eliminate sugar even if it's for the next 20 days will

>> it certainly is right as we head towards the new year. today, though, it was mild but it was a pretty nice day. clarence tweeted this to me on my twitter account skies over wilmington delaware seeing some blue skies. sun now sets at 4:44, our days are getting a little bit longer now that we've passed the winter solstice. we did cool off today. the week temperatures were in the 50's. today we cooled down to 48 degrees but still that's 7 degrees above normal so not quite as warm as the weekend but still relatively mild and felt pretty good with light winds and the sunshine, especially north of philadelphia, more clouds were stuck to the south. currently in philadelphia it's 43 degrees millville 37. wilmington 42. allentown 37. and reading currently 39 degrees. satellite6 along with action radar showing the cold front that slipped through yesterday that brought us some of that light rain. that's now stalled down to the south so you'll notice that south of philadelphia we saw a lot of clouds, more sunshine

to the north and i think that's still the way our day will start off tomorrow but we will sea bright anyone skies as we head through the day. temperatures will begin to cool off as we get this very large area of high pressure that's moving down if canada and this is creating some cold conditions bismarck north dakota it's 2 degrees international falls it's 3 degrees below zero but this cold air will take its time getting to the east coast and by the time it does, it will be modified. so it won't be quite that brutal but temperatures will be dropping below normal. future tracker showing tomorrow afternoon philadelphia right around 39 degrees so cooler than today. that air mass, that colder air mass tries to get a little bit closer to us by new year's eve. wednesday at 2 o'clock 34 degrees. it will be breezy, though, so wind chills in the afternoon will be stuck in the 20's. so, you do want to bundle up as you're heading out for new year's eve. call from accuweather for tonight, stars to the north of philadelphia, more clouds to the south. it will be seasonably chilly.

31 degrees in philadelphia, cape may 34 and reading 27 degrees. the five day at 5:00 shows tomorrow cooler than today with a mix of clouds and sunshine a high of 40 degrees so seasonable. on wednesday the high 34 degrees but we'll have winds eight to 16 miles per hour, so wind chills will be in the low 20's. the wind chill around 20 degrees as you ring in the new year and then thursday, new year's day for the mummers parade 38 degrees. again wind chills in the 20's but this is the brief shot of cold air. by friday, increasing clouds as milder air moves in, 42 degrees. saturday mostly cloudy, 44 degrees. some moisture will be moving in on saturday night. could cause some problems in parts of our region. i'll talk more about that coming up in the full accuweather 7-day forecast. >> sounds good. >> thank you cecily. >> much more ahead in our next hour of "action news" at 5:00 detectives release new details in that deadly apartment fire in delaware. why a criminal investigation may now be in the works. >> plus, a popular amusement park in our area is facing

tonight. sharrie williams joins us. here's what's happening on "action news." an armed crook who hit several local hotels in the past few days is still on the loose and not afraid to use force. the search is intensifying for that missing air asia flight that vanished with more than 160 people on board. and drivers who use route 42 in new jersey prepare yourself. big delays are coming in the next two days and we'll have the details. >> and now the details. investigators say a thief went on a christmas week crime spree targeting several area hotels. but one of the intended victims wouldn't surrender without a fight. "action news" reporter chad pradelli is covering this story for us. he's live outside southwest detectives in west philadelphia with more. chad. >> reporter: sharrie philadelphia police say the suspect is wanted for six robberies, all occurred early last week leading up to the christmas holidays. like you said, he's armed with a gun and willing to use it and did so against a victim who fought back. >> it was no one in the lobby

and he saw there was nobody in the lobby and he went behind the desk here. >> reporter: the armed robbery went down inside the north american motor inn around 1:00 tuesday afternoon but general manager diamond burrwell wasn't going let the thief take his employee's purse. >> i grabbed the chair and he ran out the door. i picked up the chair from inside and i hit him and knocked him down and knocked the pocketbook off his back that he took from my front beck clerk. >> reporter: he chased the suspect who hopped over this fence but then turned around and fired two shots. >> they saw the casing back here on the ground i don't know whether it ricocheted off anything or not. we're justified it. enough is enough. >> we did receive some information on a car that he may be driving which is a honda accord, it's black in color no, further information. >> reporter: police say the suspect is wanted for at least a half dozen robberies and one attempted robbery. most occurred at hotels in southwest philadelphia and delaware county near the

airport. the suspect haas has been heavily masked in most of the crimes. >> he's wearing a water department safety vest in some of the jobs. >> just a matter of time before they get him that's all. can't get away with it forever >> reporter: and fortunately no one was injured in any of the robberies. now here within the past five minutes we did get some surveillance video from philadelphia police. we weren't able to get it into our story you just saw there but we do have it up on our facebook page and we'll have further updates on 6abc.com. i'm live in southwest philadelphia, chad pradelli, channel6 "action news. >> okay, thank you chad. meantime a serial robber who has targeted several banks around area this month struck for the 8th time today. authorities say the suspect seen there on thisy on the screen in several surveillance pictures hit the wells fargo branch on the 1200 block of east lancaster avenue in bryn mawr around 10:30 this morning. they believe he's also responsible for five other

bank robberies and two attempted bank robberies since the 11th of this month. in each case, the suspect showed no weapon and no one was hurt. we have an update to a story "action news" brought you earlier this month. delaware authorities have now determined the death of a person found in a burning apartment building is suspicious. firefighters found the body of 57-year-old juniata laura inside her home at the harbor house apartment complex in claymont last weekend. now, it's not clear if the fire was started to conceal the crime. the fire marshal is still trying to pinpoint what started the blaze. also from our delaware news room tonight, this is 22-year-old dante morrison. authorities say they have been looking for him since august 5th when he allegedly robbed two teenagers at the capital greenhousing complex. during a traffic stop in dover saturday night an officer recognized morrison and arrested him. he was also allegedly found with a fully loaded .22 caliber handgun. he's now being held on

$116,000 bond. and the red cross is helping a family with shelter clothing and food after their home caught on fire today in philadelphia's brewerytown section. chopper 6 hd over the scene in the 1300 block of north 28th street. it took firefighters just 20 minutes to put out the flames. the cause is under investigation right now. fortunately nobody was hurt. >> now to the latest on the search for that missing air asia flight. today the indonesian government asked the u.s. for help locating the missing aircraft. air asia flight 8501 vanished sunday morning on its way from indonesia to singapore. 162 people were on board. it's pleased that the plane is now at the bottom of the java sea. ships and planes are scouring the area for debris. officials say the pilot asked for permission to climb above a storm but was told to remain at its currents altitude. five minutes later the plane disappeared from the radar. >> but it just disappeared at 32,000 feet. there's very few things that

could do that and it's -- it could be weather related but hyland unlikely or a bomb but it just doesn't make sense that an airplane would disappear at 32,000 feet. >> two potential clues popped up today but they are hundreds of miles apart. one was an oil slick near where the plane lost contacting. an australian search crew also reported suspicious objects floating in the water about 700 miles from the search site. >> the rift between new york city police and mayor bill deblasio widened today at a cadet graduation. >> you will confront all the problems that plague our society, problems that you didn't create. you'll confront poverty you'll confront mental illness. >> well, a heckler had yelled out no you created them and was met with cheers while deblasio tried to congratulate nearly 900 new officers, police unions have criticized him for being too sympathetic to police protesters. dozens of officers even turned

their backs when the mayor spoke saturday at the funeral of slain officer rafael ramos. a funeral for the other officer killed in the december 27th ambush wenjan liu has been scheduled for this sunday morning. a second suspect is being sought after an attack on lapd officers last night. officials say two men opened fire on a cruiser patrolling a neighborhood in south l.a. the officers returned fire. nobody was hit. no motive has been pin pointed but officials say there is no indication that this attack is linked to the police ambush in. no world news tonight with david muir will have much more on the backlash against police in los angeles as well as the search for that missing air asia flight including a family who nearly got on the doomed flight. and you can watch that following "action news" at 6:00. >> an amusement park in the lehigh valley facing possible fines for the way it treats its workers. federal regulators say dorney park and wild water kingdom failed to protect employees from extreme heat including a

teenager who suffered burns after collapsing near a deep fryer. osha wants dorney to pay $7,000 for those alleged violations plus an additional $2,000 for recordkeeping violations. park officials have 15 business days to respond. we have important news for drivers who use route 42 through bellmawr, camden county. new jersey road crews are closing all northbound lanes during the overnight hours. it starts tonight at 8:00 p.m. when one lane will be closed and then by 11:00 p.m. all northbound traffic will be diverted. the lanes will stay closed until 5:00 a.m. the next morning. the same closures will also happen tuesday into wednesday. traffic will be diverted in the area but there will likely be delays. >> all right speaking of delays, let's get a check on the traffic scene for you monday evening. >> let's head over to matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center. hey matt. >> we got them for you this evening, monica and sharrie. the polar opposite of this

morning when things were quiet. this afternoon it has been very event full for the ride home including big delays on the blue route, 477 northbound side just starting to move between baltimore mike -- pike. the crash is gone but the travel time still not so hot at 41 minutes. so you may still want to think about use throwing 20. at this point i would not use 252 which i was suggesting earlier because now there's a crash just south of route three the broomall upper darby west chester pike area. in glenolden still have that crash, awful accident that led to a vehicle fire closing down chester pike, route 13, between knowles avenue and nard gary avenue. stay on baltimore pike or macdade boulevard as alternates. 422 the left lane is getting by an overturned trash truck near armand hammer boulevard. right lane is still blocked. speeds are not pretty whatsoever. use ridge pike and high street or 724 instead. we still have an overturned truck on the ramp from the turnpike eastbound to willow grove partially blocking that

>> two old silos came crashing down in luzerne county pennsylvania this morning. the silos were once used for raw materials. the company that made glass screens for television had

stored. that facility closed back in 2004 but the silos were still there until today. folks in the area say they have been an eyesore it wasn't time for them to go. more than a dozen people remain hospitalized after a fire that killed five residents at a senior living facility near santonio texas. more than 150 firefighters responded to the 11 story building here yesterday. the cause remains under investigation but it appears to have started on the third floor. the building houses 350 residents. >> 50-year-old man survived an attack by a great white shark off the california coast. well, he was surfing yesterday when he was dragged under water and bitten on the hip. the shark held him under for several seconds before he broke free and paddled to shore. the victim used the leash cord from his surfboard to make a tourniquet for his leg before he even got to the shore. so, two doctors happened to be on the beach when he got there. they rushed to help him and he was flown to the hospital for

treatment. two men suspected of stealing a newspaper delivery van were arrested after a chase with police. officials say they stole the san francisco chronicle delivery van just before 9:00 this morning. police tried to pull the van over but a chase ensued. it lasted for over an hour traveling across three counties. at one point the suspects in the passenger seat jumped out and was quickly though, taken into custody. the driver finally stopped in a neighborhood and ran for it but he was eventually caught in a creek under a bridge. >> turning to sports eagles season is officially over and chip kelly and the players are talking about this year's performance. >> jeff skversky is live in the "action news" sports center with more. hey, jeff. >> hey guys, chip kelly says point blank today you are measured on super bowl and we didn't win the super bowl. changes are certainly coming for the eagles and chip kelly even points the finger at himself saying he needs to get better at everything. the eagles are cleaning out

south. some clouds mainly south of philadelphia. as you look across the northern plains some clouds beginning to spill down from canada with cold air with high pressure that really is going to dominate our forecast right into the new year. it will bring cold conditions but quiet conditions, very strong broad high pressure and this moves to our west by wednesday on new year's eve so the highs only in the 30's on new year's eve but we'll also get that wind tunnel effect so you factor in the winds, wind chills will be in the low 20's during the day and by ringing in the new year the wind chill will drop down to about 20 degrees. so you definitely do want to bundle up but it will be dry and clear. so the next 12 hours stars north of philadelphia, more clouds to the south. seasonably chilly. 26 degrees the low in the suburbs, 31 for center city and planning your day tomorrow we'll see a mix of clouds and sunshine. at 7 o'clock 32 degrees. by 10 o'clock 36. 1 o'clock a high of 40 and by 4 o'clock 39 degrees so not quite as mild as today. it will be seasonably chilly tomorrow.

display and exchange gifts. then around 7 o'clock they left this house headed over to matthew's house to pick up some clothes for a sleepover but he never made it. >> sweet little boy. played with all neighborhood kids. it's tragic, very tragic. >> reporter: 10-year-old matthew mccloskey didn't see the quickly approaching police car as he started crossing route 47. his friends saw it coming and tried to call him back. moments later a chilling call on police radio. >> just involved in a car accident with a pedestrian. >> reporter: that was the voice of patrolman nicholas localento. the franklin township administrator said he had been responding to a urgent call. the prosecutor is investigating. witnesses say the police car did not have its lights or siren activated. investigators were back on the scene today taking measurements and looking for surveillance videoly matt was the youngest of four children. he was in fifth grade at ritter elementary.
