swept out to sea. in the southwest. more than a foot of snow in northern arizona. by now the flagstaff area usually has much more snow on the ground. just doesn't arrive all at once. there were dozens of accidents and interstate 40 was closed for a while. and further east on i-40 in oklahoma city a truck overturned and caught fire. it was carrying mattresses and carpets and there were only minor injuries reported. it was one of many accidents blamed on the slick roads. but those are only two of the places experiencing winter weather today. >> let's get the forecast from accuweather's justin povick. good morning. >> thank you. the northeast, another cold day on tap for friday. have the heavy coats handy.

some snow showers off the great lakes. traveling shouldn't be too much of a concern with lots of sunshine and a lack of major snows. now the south plains different story here. a whole lot of rain into southeastern texas, arkansas louisiana, mississippi, with slippery travel to oklahoma and west texas. back to you. >> well weather has also been a factor in the slow search for answers about the airasia crash. the first funeral was held today although more than a dozen bodies have been recovered. dozens more have not. >> and no big pieces of wreckage have been found either. lil muhammad lila has more. >> reporter: a couple of new developments here more bodies and debris from the water, now will be identified using dna samples and fingerprints. the debris may have come from

inside the plane. they may be closing to finding the black boxes. they have been hampered by continually changing weather. and a big part of the search mission is the american component. uss sampson is an active part of the search mission, but the pentagon deployed a second ship to the region. it's on stand by but awaiting an official request from the indonesian government. time is running out. the black boxes have 30 days of battery power. we have used up six of them and there's no telling when the search might end. >> thanks. back at home, president obama among those mourning the loss of former new york governor mario cuomo this morning. >> he led the state for three terms, he had an impact far beyond new york. elizabeth hur has a look back on his remarkable political career. >> in the city streets in the

gutter. >> reporter: a devoted public servant, never afraid to speak his mind. >> either we make it all of us together, or there is no america worth the that god has given this blessed place. >> reporter: mario cuomo was a three-term governor born in queens 82 years ago. and just hours before he died in manhattan of heart failure, his son, current new york governor andrew cuomo, paid tribute during the inauguration speech for his second term. >> he couldn't be here physically today, my father. but my father is in this room. he's in the heart and mind of every person who is here. >> reporter: as a staunch supporter of civil rights protector of the underdog and women's right to choose cuomo resisted the pressure to run for president twice in 1988 and 1992. but he was never a reluctant leader in new york. respected by those who worked with and against him. >> he did it because he believed

in new york and he believed in america. >> he had a great passion and a great love for his culture. >> reporter: the son of italian immigrants grew up working in his father's grocery store. went on to law school and then launched his political career. his last public appearance in november 2014 at the victory speech for his son's re-election. marking the last time the only father-son governors in new york history shared a stage. cuomo and his wife of 60 years had two sons and three daughters president governor's office said his funeral plans will be announced soon. >> and he was definitely a force. he backed out twice of deciding to run for president. did we learn why? >> there are several theories out there. but many people believe it was more personal than anything. that he did not like sleeping in anything but his own bed. so there you have it. >> hey, it's tough running for the white house. so a lot of different calculations on that one.

thank you so much. >> thank you. well, the chinese government is denying reports that fake money thrown into a new year's eve crowd caused the deadly stampede in shanghai. grieving relatives were identifying the bodies of loved ones. 36 were killed and dozens injured as thousands gathered at the popular waterfront ring in 2015. some are accusing the government of failing to provide adequate security. the captain of the doomed greek ferry is speaking out. the captain said he and his crew did the best they could. but his thoughts are with the families of the victims. 11 people died some predict a much higher death toll. it's being towed to italy and will be searched. this season's flu epidemic is growing. the cdc says it's now wide spread in 36 states. 15 children have died. and in late december 7% of the

nation's deaths were due to flu. hospitalization rates are up because the vaccine is not well-matched to the virus. as a result many emergency rooms and urgent care clinics are overwhelm overwhelmed, some turning away sufferers. and giving advice over the phones. and scheduling when a patient can come in. otherwise people may have to wait a couple of hours. not pleasant for many. the cleveland cavaliers lebron james is out with serious injuries. he's expected to be out two weeks. injuries to his left knee and lower back. there were such high expectations when james rejoined cleveland, but he's struggling and they have lost the last three games and only 18-14. doctors say he needs rest. and sticking with the sports theme we know who will play in the first-ever football playoff

championship game. one will be the oregon ducks who took advantage of florida state's many mistakes and turnovers. the seminoles headed into the rose bowl with 29 consecutive wins. but heisman trophy winner jameis winston had one of his worst games left. it was 59-20. the other team welcome the ohio state. stunning top-ranked alabama in the sugar bowl. turning point, this play trick one late in the first half. a double reverse that brought the buckeyes within a point. at the midpoint it was only the second start for third-string quarterback cardale jones who threw for 233 yards. beating alabama 42-35. now to another sporting event. athletes are gearing up for it. the world arm wrestling championship is being held in new orleans next weekend. and competitors like these folks in ohio have been putting in hours of training.

another major recall for general motors because of defective ignitions. nearly 100,000 full-size trucks and suvs could have ignition lock problems in hot weather. drivers have problems turning the key. a wide variety are being recalled including chevy, gmc and cadillac models. you are paying a half dollar less for gas than just a month ago. the national average this morning is $2.24. that's down almost 9.5 cents since last week. but that could change. many states are raising gas taxes, including some that already have the highest prices in the country. parents of college-bound children can start filling out financial aid forms. the sooner the better. families are mistaken that they have to wait until their 2014 tax return is completed. it's free and online.

starbucks has a new item for the new year. the flat white has been available in britain and australia for years. but coffee lovers in the u.s. can't agree on what is a flat white. most call it a cappuccino variant. but instead of the airy foam it's a dense foam mixed evenly through the drink. it goes on sale tuesday here. running out of room on your iphone or ipad? there's a lawsuit for that. a class action lawsuit claims that apple is falsely claiming the storage for the devices. they are saying that ios 8 eats into a fourth of the memory. and users cannot add memory cards to apple mobile devices. and ipad sales may show a decline. about 6 million fewer last year than 2013. analysts say apple is a victim of its own success. the new larger iphones are eating into ipad sales and other

manufacturer's fablets. the stock was up 40% for the year. but apple lost this year in one area to the arch-rival samsung. they had a higher customer satisfaction score than the iphones. there wasn't a huge difference, and it was taken before the iphone 6 and 6 plus were announced. still, samsung was up significantly from the year before. and keeping with a theme here. pricing on apple products was known for being up there. but for the price is right contestants, it's a bargain. >> a iphone could cost a pretty penny. first bidder $7500. >> what? >> and pulling the jerk move of bidding a dollar over his competitor. >> the actual retail price was high though.

started the new year with a show of support for their fellow officers. police in chicago held a memorial for the two new york officers shot and killed in the squad car last month. more than a hundred people gathered at a rally for police who put their lives on the line every day. and there was a rally in ohio dubbed police lives matter. cleveland wants an outside agency to look at the shooting of a child. the toy gun was probably fake. video shows he was shot within two seconds by a rookie police officer who police say told the boy to put up his hands. tamir rice's family has sued the city saying they act eded. and peachtree city police chief william mccollum called 911, telling the operator he had shot his wife. for obvious reasons, local
