delaware and lehigh valleys. health reporter ali gorman is live with more on the risk of frostbite but lets begin with cecily tynan with the latest from accuweather. >> hi rick and monica it doesn't feel that bad out here now compared to this morning. temperatures nose dived to this morning the coldest of the season. 10 degrees below zero and wilmington and philadelphia down to 9 degrees, then factor in the blustery winds and windchill got your attention the windchill in the poconos 25 degrees below 0, not a good morning to be skiing and allentown 9 below and atlantic city 11 below and philadelphia the morning windchill 6 degrees below 0. despite a good amount of sunshine, temperatures have not recovered much, generally in the teens, philadelphia 17 and allentown and trenton 16 and

reading 14 and the winds have diminished so miles per hours from the west. when you have temperatures in the teens a little bit of wind creates a windchill. 2 in reading and trenton and lancaster and 7 in millville. temperatures will be steady and they begin to rise overnight, 7:00 through 9:00 we'll be stuck at 17 degrees, by 10:00 18 degrees the morning commute temperatures will be in the 20s, it will be a cold morning but not nearly as brutal as this morning. what is ahead some snow showers could complicate the morning commute. saturday a one day shot of bitter cold air we are tracking moderating temperatures on monday with the chance of rain and snow. i'll talk about that in the full accuweather forecast. >> thank you cecily. >> in the meantime the "action news" cam was out with the works

david muir right after "action news" at 6:00. back here, family and friends of shane montgomery are gathering in manayunk for a final farewell a viewing began a short time ago at st. john the baptist church it is scheduled to last until 9:00 tonight. the student was a junior at westchester university and his body was discovered in the schuylkill river weeks after he left a manayunk bar his death is ruled accidental. in other news please have photos of a man that held up a 7-eleven at gun point in montgomery county it happened at 9:00 at the store at old york road in abington it's man went to the counter to buy something and he pointed the gun at the clerk and demanded money and the worker put money into the clerk's duffle bag and he ran off. if you have information call abington police at the number on your screen.

time now a check of the "action news" traffic report matt pellman is in the traffic center with the latest on the commute home, it's slow and cold. >> that is for sure. it's almost as if people don't want to be outside today. go figure. slow here on the schuylkill expressway eastbound from 202 to this point at gulph mills to the conshohocken curve normal afternoon volume here, in plymouth township, a crash at coldwell lane and in hatfield a crash along 309. and a wreck in roxborough along roxborough avenue at henry avenue has cleared out. our slow speeds on 95 have not cleared out. this is the southbound delay entering the work zone at cotman avenue it should be 14 to get from woodhaven to the vine

the obama administration may have a fine against honda, they failed to file complaints against regulators and these include deaths and injuries the

fewer americans applied for unemployment benefits last week, a sign that people are holding on to the positive signs of the economy. it fell to 294,000 and analysts believe that the jobs report being released tomorrow will add 243000 jobs in december. that will make job growth in 2014 the best since 1999. new york city is moving forward with a ban on foam containers. mayor bill deblasio maintains that they no longer allow establishments to use containers like these. new york is the largest city in the country to ban foam containers san francisco and portland have similar bans in place. the philadelphia museum of art offers visitors two decades

meteorologist, cecily tynan is taking a look at photos from folks and even our colleagues have sent in on this frigid thursday. >> send it #~ 6 abc cold. you may recognize this guy this is matt o'donnell he used the postcard feature earlier this afternoon to say bundle up. the temperature was 13 degrees. they are naming him matty ice because he is as cool as ice i took a selfie during my run and i had seven layers on. thanks matt pellman for calling me that. you have to put a lot of layers on because it's cold out there. philadelphia is currently 73 degrees and allentown 15 and millville 15 the winds diminished and wind gusts 13 miles per hour and now down to 10 miles per hour and that creates a bit of a windchill factor and feeling like 4 in

philadelphia and 3 in allentown and 2 in wilmington. windchills were below 0, it's getting a little bit better. satellite 6 along with action radar showing we have a veil of cloud as long the i-95 corridor and areas north and west and they are overspreading our entire viewing area and this is all ahead of another arctic boundary, this is moving through chicago and snow is associated with it and most of the snow is likely north of philadelphia tomorrow and not a lot. but there could be snow showers for the morning commute especially north and west of the city. again, it's quick and fast moving and could lead a quick coating in some parts of our region. tomorrow we get the winds from the southwest and temperatures generally in the 30s and the windchill makes it feel like temperatures are in the teens and 20s. then you see another shot of cold air that is moving in on saturday. and lots of sunshine and afternoon highs back down into

the afternoon 34 degrees, however you factor in the winds and windchills tomorrow afternoon will generally be in the teens and 20s and i'm tracking another cold day on the way on saturday. i'll have all the details in the full accuweather forecast. >> thank you cecily. >> in other news philadelphia suffered its first fire death of 2015 early this morning. an elderly man lost his life when his home caught fire in logan. >> this family and the entire neighborhood really heart broken by this loss. 79-year-old lee fletcher a vietnam veteran, he spent 25 years in the u.s. army and was a career military man and took pride in serving his country and more importantly he was a family man with a generous heart. >> strong, loveable and friendly and helpful. >> lisa jones reflecting on her father lee fletcher the 75-year-old was the only one in

the house when the flames broke out on the 1800 block of rosalind street. jones was one of the only children that lived with fletcher. >> he left to get food. >> i knew they had the wrong house, i said not my house i just left there. my neighbor calls and said my grandfather was on the ground burning, devastating. >> they were met with intense flames. fletcher was a veteran that served in vietnam and was is abled and unable to walk without the aid of a cane. and was found -- he died a short time later. >> my first car when i graduate everything man he is always there for me. >> as family members returned to the home today to salvage

everything they could. they are remembering the man they call gp or grandpa. >> he raised me and raised everybody. everyone loves him. >> the fire marshall continues to look for cause of this fire. but at this point the initial report is that it may involve the freezer in the kitchen and the house had working smoke detectors. the search is on for to thiefs that knocked a man unconscious in center city philadelphia so they could steal from him. this is the video from the suspects inside of a 7-eleven store on market street on september 20th one of men sparked a conversation while walking along jfk boulevard child he was distracted the second suspect ran up and knocked him out. his cell phone wallet and money were gone when he woke up and

minutes later they tried to use his debit card at several convenience stores. the action cam was at popularpoplar street in trenton, the fire tore through a two story row home and it took an hour to get things under control. one person was taken to the hospital with injuries. the cause of the blaze is under investigation tonight. a collision between a school bus and car caused traffic tie-ups in the bustleton section this morning, chopper 6 hd was over head at 8:00 a.m. investigators said the car rear ended the school bus from the delta school the other driver was not hurt. the bitter cold not only drains energy from our bodies it can take a toll on our electronic devices like cell phones but there are things you can do to keep them from going

look at the traffic report one more time. >> i have seen better and i have seen worse. that is the picture with the traffic this evening, we are watching a crash here on the 30 bypass west at thorndale it's mostly off to the side, we see exiting delays and it's not jamming things up a whole lot more in chester county, a fuel spill in delco along bishop hollow road, and the typical slowing on the blue route with speeds in the 20 coming down from villanova. ten years of doing this and i have never heard of this, crash on pigary road. another accident on 309 at hatfield and one approaching alexander road taking out the left lane. >> you like that one rick and

in albuquerque new mexico a truck smashed into a city bus leaving the bus driver hanging out of the windchill r windshield right there.

the driver ran a red light and collided with the bus it hopped the curb and hit a sign and amazingly neither driver was hurt. but the bus company will use this as a training video to remind drivers to also buckle up. a family of four was taken for a special rides after their car went under a big rig. the family's minivan became lodged underneath the trailer and was dragged for miles on 95 until offices stopped the vehicle. >> he didn't know we were there and before we knew it he ended up dragging us for 16 miles, i was on the phone for 911 the whole time. >> officials say that poor visibility due to snow was to blame for the accident. the family in the van suffered bumps and bruises. turning to sports we are

meteorologist, cecily tynan is back in the warm studio today is the coldest day of the year and the season. >> hopefully we don't get another one. >> it was the windchills this morning even this afternoon the winds have died down and it feels a lot better everything is relative but still cold out there. >> i don't want my relatives out there. >> the holidays are over. stormtracker 6 live double scan showing that we have rain free, snow free conditions out there but there is plenty of cold air and a lot of sunshine earlier today, and the action cam is taking a look at the u.s. customs house at chestnut built in 1834, rick remember when they built that?

enjoying blue skies earlier today before the clouds rolled in this afternoon. our morning low 9 degrees, not a record the record low is 2 degrees but a windchill of 9 degrees below 0. and the afternoon high 19 degrees and that is 29 degrees below 0 and 17 degrees below our normal low. and currently in philadelphia it's 17 degrees and allentown and trenton 15 and millville 16 and reading 14 and the poconos 9 degrees the winds have definitely diminished. and winded out of the west in philadelphia at 12 miles per hour and millville down to 6 and temperatures this low doesn't take much to create a windchill. the windchill 7 in philadelphia and 2 in reading and 3 in allentown and 7 in millville. at least the windchills are above freezing satellite 6 along with action radar showing we are beginning to see the clouds move in from the west,

meteorologist cecily tynan. >> jim the good news is the temperatures are warmer tomorrow and it gets colder on saturday and the worst of it was this morning the poconos were 3 degrees below 0 and atlantic city 8 and wilmington and philadelphia we dropped down to 9 degrees but the winds really told the story. the windchill in the poconos not a good morning to go skiing 23 below 0 and allentown 9 below and 11 degrees below 0 and philadelphia we dropped down to 6 degrees below 0 with the windchill. temperatures are cold and never even hit 20 degrees today. running more than 20 degrees below average, philadelphia 18 and allentown and millville 15 and reading and trenton 14 degrees the winds have diminished. we have winds generally 8 to 12 miles per hour, but it doesn't take much to create a windchill.
