today. three terror suspects were dead, two were suspects in the killing at the charlie hebdo newspaper earlier this week. it is friday night and the big story on "action news" is the end of a deadly standoff that ended with the killings of three alleged terrorists and also claimed the lives of four hostages. >> it unfolded at two separated locations. one of the women suspected have having a roll in the standsoff is on the run. >> hi rick and mon today. police say this woman was an accomplice in one of the standsoffs with police today. she is believed to escaped during all the commotion and is said to be on the run. so three suspects dead and this person still wanted for questioning. but remarkable developments today in this massive manhunt. it came to a very violent end and there were two tense standsoffs. the first at this printerring company nearly 30 miles outside of paris. police cornered the two brother that is police say carried out wednesday's massacre is the satirical newspaper charlie member do.

officials say cherif and said kouachi exchanged gunfire. the brothers reportly called a french tv station saying they were commissioned by al-qaeda defending the prophet mohammed. we also a know al-qaeda release add video today confirming that they are taking responsibility. meanwhile inside a kosher supermarket east of paris police say another accused terrorist amedy coulibaly killed four hostages. he called the same television station saying he synchronized his attack with the kouachis and saying he was a member of isis. he also murdered a police officer in a shootout yesterday. at least 10 hostages they fled for safety today and amidst the chaos the female suspect is thought to have escaped with them. today president obama sent his condolences to those who were killed and said america stands with france against the terrorists. >> the world has seen once again what terrorists stand for. they have nothing to offer but hatred and human suffering and

>> okay, thanks, sharrie. >> thank you so much. >> it has been a long cold week but today was the first time we actually climbed above the freezing mark. >> felt pretty good. >> yes, it did. >> but the slight warmup will not last very long. meteorologist cecily tynan outside our studios with all the details from accuweather. >> hi, rick and monica. your point of reference compared to yesterday it did feel pretty nice today with temperatures finally above freezing. we climbed above freezing at noon dark the last time temperatures in philadelphia were above freezing was monday afternoon. so, we had 91 consecutive hours below freezing and we had some pretty brutal wind chills yesterday. currently philadelphia still a couple degrees above freezing, 34 degrees. our time is running out. trenton 31. millville 31. wilmington 32. sea isle city 34 degrees. it's 28 now in allentown, 27 in reading and it's 18 degrees in the poconos so colder air will be rolling in tonight. however, look at this compared to yesterday. it's 17 degrees warmer in philadelphia than yesterday.

15 degrees warmer in millville and 16 degrees warmer in trenton but that being said, we do have a bit of a wind chill factor its breezy with winds out of the southwest so the wind chill makes it feel like 20 in philadelphia, feels like 24 in millville feels like 13 in reading but wind chills on the west side of the mountains in western pennsylvania are around zero and there cold air mass is moving our way overnight. so your friday night you're heading out you want to bundle up. the evening planner showing temperatures will be dropping down to 25 degrees at 10 o'clock this evening and then they really get cold tomorrow. tomorrow it is going to feel a lot like yesterday. so, what's ahead? yes we did get a brief break from the polar plunge today. but it gets frigid again for one day tomorrow before temperatures moderate on sunday. monday though, could get messy with rain and perhaps some ice in parts of our region. i'll talk more about that in the full accuweather forecast. monica. >> thanks cecily. you can show us how cold it is yourself today in this weekend where you are with our

"action news" reporter vern odom is in voorhees tonight with the story at virtua hospital where the victim was receiving treatment. vernon. >> reporter: rick, it was slated to be a joy wuss christmas and new year's season for nicole born and her family but out of nowhere suddenly it turned into sickness and ultimately a nightmare and tragedy for the feisty local business woman and her loved ones. this is nicole born of voorhees the picture of good health at the age of treatment the mother of two suddenly passed away last weekend after taking ill during the

holidays. the culprit doctors say the influenza virus h3n2: the strain is associated with higher rates of severe illness and death but born's death is highly unusual. 90 percent of flu related deaths in the u.s. occur in those over 65. not an active person like born who loved fishing and was an accomplished athlete in high school and college. >> most of the people who die of the flu tend to be either elderly immuno suppressed or debilitated to begin with or the very young so somebody at this age would be an extremely uncommon event. >> reporter: born's family says her entire household came down with flu around christmastime but the devoted mother and wife concentrated on taking care of her family instead of herself. >> if they die of the flu often it's from getting a pneumonia on top of the flu rather than just the flu itself. >> reporter: nicole born's

funeral is scheduled for tomorrow morning in berlin here in south jersey. live in voorhees, vernon odom, channel6 "action news." >> all right vernon thank you. new jersey officials are issuing a warning tonight about an illegal drug being sold in the state. highly potent and dangerous heroine is being sold in pennsylvania, new york and new jersey with these three labels. investigators say the drugs are linked to six recent overdose deaths in the area. police also warn that some of the drugs being sold as heroin actually contain no heroine at all just toxic and deadly chemicals. >> philadelphia police want you to be on the lookout for a young 12-year-old who disappeared overnight. this is maurice cunningham. he was last seen at his family home in the 1500 block of west norris street in north philadelphia. now, police say he had gotten into a fight with his father and he does have behavioral issues. he's 4 feet five, about 93 pounds. if you have seen him please call police with any tips. bucks county has a brand new justice center for cases to be tried.

the first group was told they could still be chosen for the jury even if they have heard about the former patriot's high profile case. hernandez is accused of killing a semi pro football player who was dating his fiancée's sister in june of 2013. more prospective jurors are expected to be broader in on monday and tuesday. >> the accused ringleader of a deadly hazing ritual at florida a and m learned his fate today. dante martin is the first of 15 people charged in robert champion's death to get jail time. the the drum major was beaten to death on bands bus back in 2011 and today a judge in orlando sentenced martin to more than six years behind bars for man slaughter and felony hazing. >> charter school students in west philadelphia reaching tout a hit singer tonight. the kids made a video of themselves singing alicia keys song. they took her message to heart that everybody has to reach for the stars in the future. katherine scott has more.

>> ♪♪ >> reporter: the song we are here is a single by grammy winner alicia keys. but it's also a campaign she launched and students at universal dare charter school in west philadelphia wanted to sends a message to the world about why they're here. >> it's important to get your education. >> we all want to go to college. >> even the younger kids were saying things like i'm here to make a change in the world instead of i'm here to eat lunch today. >> reporter: music teacher kendra left hand to put together this video featuring students and teachers and what messages they want to convey. the finished project was presented in a special assembly and will be sent to alicia keys on her twitter account. the hope is that she'll retweet it to her millions of followers: what do you think she'll think of it? >> she going to be like this is amazing. >> reporter: to inspire middle schoolers to think about their futures different organizations and students from local colleges were invited as mentors. they had some fun performing

but some also spoke about setting goals for college. >> i was just in middle school and not too long ago and i was confused. i didn't know if i wanted to go to college and i didn't have the if this situation so i want to gear them and guide them to give them the right advice. >> reporter: teachers saw the campaign as a way to keep students focused on their goals. >> a lot of times we don't know why we are here so we get confused and caught up into a lot of things that we shouldn't be doing but if we know our purpose, then we will achieve it faster. >> reporter: while these kids do hope to get a retweet by alicia keys, the purpose of this project goes beyond that. >> it may be a problem in the world but we can also fix it. >> reporter: in west philadelphia, katherine scott channel6 "action news." >> we have some good news to report and it is the story we just did a couple minutes ago by a 12-year-old who had disapp beard overnight. the young man has been found in good condition. this is maurice cunningham. he was last seen in the 1500 block of west norris street in north philadelphia. police say he had gotten into a fight with his dad but good news, he has been located and he is in good condition.

>> good news there and good news here. a big donation today for a popular college preparatory school in burlington county. the doan academy is receiving what's being called a transformational gift from henry and eleanor rowan. it's a $17 million endowment that will help the academy expand and educate even more children than the 300 students currently enrolled. the school which sits on the banks of the delaware river is already constructing a new building that will be called rowan hall. today's gift is being called the biggest development fordone academy in its 178 year history. january is national blood donor month. the american red cross is taking steps to hopefully get you to donate. the action cam was in spring garden as the red cross partnered with dunkin' donuts for its give a pint get a pound drive. all blood donors will receive a voucher for a free pound of dunkin' donuts coffee. >> okay, that will warm you up. still to come on "action news" president obama wants to make community college more

springtime and summer. >> definitely we're ready. >> i have. keep it in your -- the warm thoughts in your head because you will need it tomorrow. it is going to get very cold again. but we are live on sky 6 taking look spring mountain ski resort in montgomery county where some folks are doing a little night skiing. the lights are on and actually conditions are pretty good. they have been making snow all week and today not all that cold. we did get some snow this morning. in addition to this kelly posted this on my facebook page she said that the snow looked like dipping dots. if you look at it, they're little balls and what this is technically this isn't snow, this is what's called grapple. it's when super cold water droplets collect and freeze. it's kind of like small hail so we did have a little bit of that this morning as the cold front moved through. temperatures though, not bad. 34 degrees in philadelphia and millville. 31 allentown, 28 reading, 27 in trenton 31. you factor in the winds, wind chills dropped at about 10 degrees but wind chills

will be a major factor tomorrow morning. satellite6 along with action radar showing that was the front that moved through in the morning that brought us the snow and the grapple and you can see buffalo new york dealing with snow. lake effect snow warnings in effect could get up to 3 feet of snow in buffalo. we won't be getting the snow tonight and tomorrow. however, we'll be getting those winds and that cold air. buffalo the temperature is 16 degrees and that is the cold air that will be moving over us in the overnight hours. so, future tracker showing tomorrow morning 8:30 in the morning temperatures back down into the teens and they are going to have trouble recovering and then you factor in the winds. remember yesterday how brutal it felt? tomorrow's going to be very close to that. we're looking at wind chills in the single digits across extreme south jersey, interior south jersey, the i-95 corridor wind chills five below to zero. the northwest suburbs five to 10 degrees below zero and the poconos the wind chill 15 degrees below zero, so if you're heading to the mountains tomorrow, i'll meet

stop caring for children. this comes after the death one child. the state reviewed surveillance video of the incident on monday during an inspection and says it found that a worker placed a sheet over the child's face. the cause of the child's death is not known officially. several other violations were also observed during the inspection. we are still gathering details on this developing story and we'll have much more for you on 6abc.com. >> in other news tonight president obama declared today that anyone who wants to continue their education should be able to do so without having to pay for it. so today mr. obama proposed that publicly funded community colleges be free for the first two years. that's enough time to earn an associate's degree or certificate program. but those students who qualify will have to earn their free ride. abc's cavern traverse karen traverse is live tonight. >> reporter: the president said a quality education should not abprivilege for just a few but this is a very

pricey proposal. and no surprise, republicans right away dismissed it. (applause). >> reporter: in tennessee today president obama continued to roll out his upcoming state of the union address. >> don't tell anybody i said this . >> [laughter] >> i'm giving you the inside scoop. >> reporter: the president announce add new education proposal. >> an ambitious new plan to bring down the cost of community college tuition in america. i want to bring it down to zero. (applause). >> reporter: here's how it would work. students who attend school at least half time and maintain a 2.5gpa would get two years free at a communities college. the school would have to allow students to transfer to four year schools or do job training programs. the white house says a program like this could benefit up to 9 million students if every state participate. the average tuition savings is estimated at $3,800 a year. the white house says this plan would cost the federal government about $60 billion

over 10 years. but that's only three-quarters of the cost. the remaining $20 billion would be left for states to pick up. republicans quickly dismillions the proposal as just a talking point. one that will never move forward. the white house says they want to start a conversation. they say this video released last night with the president announcing the plan was the most viewed facebook post ever for the white house. more than 5.7 million views. president obama's proposal is modeled after one started by tennessee's republican governor but some republican lawmakers say this is an issue best left to the states, no the federal government. reporting live from washington karen traverse, channel6 "action news." sharrie. >> okay, karen thank you. meantime nebraska supreme court removed a major obstacle to the controversial keystone excel oil pipeline today. the judges tossed out a lawsuit challenging the pipeline's route through nebraska. president obama had called the

lawsuit a major reason for his opposition to the bill. republicans say the pipeline is their top priority now that they control congress. we will it passed the house again today. a test vote in the senate is scheduled for monday. comedian bill cosby is under fire once again. this time for joking about the sex assault accusations made against him. shame on you shame on you. >> protesters shoulder at guests of cosby's standup routine in ontario last night. inside the 77-year-old comedian made a joke about a female audience member who got up to get a drink. cosby said "you have to be careful about drinking around me." many of cosby's accusers have said the comedian slipped something into their drink before assaulting them. another person yelled rapist at cosby during the show and was then removed. cosby released this statement following the performance. it reads "one outburst but

victim was shot about 75 feet from the front door. the store was opened for business. investigators say the victim had arranged to meet a person who may have owed him money and police say they're close to identifying that gunman. a philadelphia man will spend between five and 12 years behind bars for drunk driving after killing a mother in wissinoming. 58-year-old theresa mccard and her husband were walking on a sidewalk near comly street in february of 2013 when a minivan driven by eric lu cia no swerved into them. the man pushed the woman out of the path of the van but she was killed. luge -- llewes -- >> the terms provide retroactive wage increases for 2013 and 2014 as well as a 3.25 percent hike this july. nutter says the deal will

people. for folks whose jobs require them to work outside, it was a welcome break from the even colder weather if only for a few hours. >> a crash involving a tractor-trailer packed with fireworks created this nasty scene in michigan this morning. as many as 90 cars were caught in the fiery pileup on a snowy stretch of i94. thousands of pounds of fireworks exploded. at least one person died and dozens more injured. a 3-mile evacuation was ordered because another truck involved was also carrying hazardous materials. that freeway will not reopen

of sunshine to enjoy. on sunday it starts to ease just a little better. gets a little better by then, a high temperature coming in at 36 degrees with clouds and sunshine. so we actually tap into a southwesterly wind on sunday ahead of a system we're tracking for the start of next work week. the call from accuweather for the rest of tonight, partly cloudy turning colder, just 14 in the city, 8 degrees for the overnight low north and west of town. here's the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, sunny and bitterly cold once again on saturday, high temperature 22. on sunday not as cold, a high of 36. then really late sunday overnight into monday we're tracking a storm system that will bring some wintry precipitation and changing over to rain. the timing with this is going to be key on monday. high temperatures coming in at 36 degrees. on tuesday behind that brisk and much colder with a high temperature of just 29. mostly sunny on wednesday 34 degrees. lots of clouds around on thursday and at 37 and 34 as we get into next friday. so a chilly start tomorrow but there is some recovery on the way over the week, guys.
