now and it hasn't been a very pleasant day. it's been cold, it's been damp. temperatures though, buffer freezing. this is going to change tonight. philadelphia 38, millville 37, allentown 36 and wilmington 37 degrees. the big problem with this evening's commute is the fog. so, you do want to take it very slow. now, a wider view on storm tracker 6 live double scan showing this is a cold front that will move through later this evening. there is a little bit of snow associated with this so some of us could see a couple snow showers at the end but what this front will do is shift the winds out of the northwest and that will bring us plunging temps in the overnight hours and this is the concern with the refreeze. right now toronto is 28 degrees detroit 25, cleveland 26 degrees. that's the air mass that will be moving through in the overnight hours. so the refreeze will be a big problem tomorrow morning. so, this is what to expect overnight. the rain will completely clear the coast by midnight. again, we could have a few snow showers. temperatures dropping below 32 degrees. so wet untreated surfaces will

be freezing up especially the bridges, the overpasses, the driveways and the sidewalks so once again we're looking at black ice for your morning commute and temperatures tomorrow are going have a tough time even climbing out of the 20's and we are again talking about wind chills. for all the details coming up in the full accuweather forecast. monica. >> thank you cecily. let's switch live to quakertown where reporter walter perez has more on today's terrible travel conditions. hi, walter. >> reporter: monica, it has been a cold, wet miserable horrible day across the region and as is so common during the winter across our region the commute this morning was better or worse depending on where you were. the conditions certainly could have been a lot worse for commuters today. but as usual during winters around here the further north you traveled, the worse it was. >> we've gotten a lot of material on the roads. everything is pretty good in our district. little further north in the poconos they're still going to be some icy conditions throughout the day as temperatures however around

that freezing mark especially in the pocono plateau but so far so good. >> reporter: penndot spokesperson ron young says conditions like these are always tricky when the temperature hovers around the freezing point. commuters and pedestrians had to deal with icy conditions here and there in the delaware and lehigh valleys butter by the but by the afternoon it developed into a cold rainy day and with visions of last winter still lingering in the minds of many most of the people we spoke with today say they will take it. >> it was a lot of snow, very lot of snow, that's all i remember. >> reporter: hard to forget. >> yes, and although this year really we've had nothing and they were calling for a lot this year. >> i'll take the rain over snow any day. it's warm, not as cold. i haven't lost electricity yet so things are good. >> reporter: but you better remember winter is not over yet, not by a long shot. meanwhile penndot officials are also mentioning that this week is winter driving awareness week reminding everybody to keep an emergency kit inside their cars with first aid supplies and warm clothes just in case and to

craig. during a moving tribute to fallen philadelphia firefighter joyce craig, mayor michael nutter presented her family with the official flag of the city. she was killed in the line of duty on december the ninth while helping battle a blaze in a west oak lane row house. her brother spoke for the family today. >> i was proud of her, although i didn't like her job because it was dangerous. i was thinking i'm not going to be sad when i tell people that she died. i'm going to continue being proud and singing her praise. >> reporter: joyce craig is survived by two children, a teenaged son an three year old daughter. she was the first female firefighter in philadelphia history to be killed in the line of duty. >> joyce craig, a leader, a trailblazer, a firefighter a hero. saved a citizen and gave up herself, the ultimate sacrifice. >> reporter: there are still many unanswered questions surrounding that deadly fire. the word on cause from the department more than a month

after "it is still under investigation". where was craig's body found? initial reports say she was trapped in the basement. later that were reports she was found on the first floor. official word today from the department's top brass "still under investigation." this weekend federal experts examined the air cylinder she was using at the time she was killed. standard procedure when there's a death to make sure there were no breaks in the system and that it was acting properly. no word on what the fashiony national institute for occupational safe teen health lab found this weekends. still no word yet from top officials as to when they'll release that final report to the public. live in spring garden, vernon odom, channel6 "action news." >> all right, vernon thank you. turning now to the terror investigation in france tonight. authorities now believe as many as six terror cell members could still be at large in the wake of last week's attacks in paris. there is increased security across france after 17 people

were killed over three days last week. three suspects were killed but authorities are searching the paris area for other possible terror suspects. also today the white house says it should have cents a higher level official to an anti-terror march in paris yesterday. the u.s. ambassador to france was on hands for the march to represent the united states that featured 40 world leaders at the demonstration. there will be much more on the terror investigation in paris tonight on world news with david muir at 6:30 tonight directly after "action news" at 6:00. >> a former sportscaster spent today defending himself in a bucks county courtroom. don tollefson is accused of scamming people who thought they were donating to charity. "action news" reporter chad pradelli was in the courtroom today when tollefson presented his case. he's live in doylestown with more. hi chad. >> reporter: hi, monica. listening to tollefson tell it he's in a tough spot and the court side his social security benefits he makes too much money so he can't get a public

defender. he says his estranged wife lost her job so he can't get a private attorney so today he was defending himself and as one court observer put it, it was a train wreck. day one of former sports caster don tollefson's defense was intermittent. a word often repeated by the prosecution was relevance. a judge will to excuse the jury more than a half dozen times to instruct and guide tollefson on procedure and the rules of law. >> i'd rather be waterboardd to be honest. it's horrible. this was a waste of time. it's a waste of taxpayer's money and he's just making a mockery of the court. >> reporter: tom fox is the father of former plymouth township police officer brad fox who was killed in the line of duty in 2012. charities for the fox family are among the roughly 200 victims tollefson is accused of bill be -- bilking.

tollefson claims he didn't rip anybody off but he's simply a bad businessman and he said he never wanted to represent himself. >> when you have counsel withdrawing and you have plea bargains withdrawn, at least to my knowledge then it makes it very limited in terms of what my options were. >> i'm only concerned that the jury is getting the message aren't the message is in the evidence and i believe we've gotten our message across. >> reporter: among those testifying today a former lansdale detective who helped show that tollefson paid 10s of thousands of dollars to airlines ticket brokers and hotels for legitimate sports packages. robert goldman is tollefson's consulting attorney. >> i think it's moving along. i think it's going to be finished in the next few days and the jury will have the case to make a decision. >> reporter: and late this afternoon tollefson took the stand in his own defense. again, he talked about how his finances simply went downhill. he has maintained all along that this is a civil matter,

tomorrow morning. right now temperatures well above freezing. philadelphia 38 degrees as a high so far today. wildwood 41. allentown 36. and reading currently 35 degrees. visibility definitely a factor. it's beginning to improve in philadelphia. it's up to 5 miles but we do have delays up to two hours at the airport so if you're flying out of the city or if you're going to pick somebody up you definitely want to check with your carrier. wilmington reporting 1 mile visibility and reading 2 miles so there's fog out there tonight. the fog will be dispersing tonight as the winds pick up and the temperatures drop and satellite6 along with action radar showing here's the actual cold front moving through central pennsylvania and this is what will sweep all that moisture out to sea tonight and usher in the cold wind. so future tracker showing around 8:30 tonight a steady rain across south jersey. it will be lightning up. it's clearing out from the coast around midnight and then tomorrow bright sunshine returns. that's nice. however, the temperatures dropping down into the 20's and that's really where

the u.s. military central command twitter and youtube sites were taken over by hackers today. those hackers claim to be associated with islamic state militants. we have a live report coming up. also employees of the palmer school say before the school closed its doors it closed its checkbook. they say they haven't been paid for days that they worked and they're demanding answers tonight. also, a retired elementary school principal wins one of the largest lottery jackpots in history a cool $326 million. >> now the details. new concerns tonight about cyber security in the united states after social media sites of the u.s. military's own central command were taken over by hackers claiming to be working on behalf of islamic state militants. that attack came at the exact hour president obama was unveiling new measures trying to keep consumers safe from hackers. while the president spoke twitter followers of cent com began to see frightening messages along with the names addresses and e-mails of top

military officials. well, all this comes a day after joint chief chairman martin dempsey said the u.s. military has no advantage in the field of cyber warfare. abc's marci gonzalez joins us with much more. marcy. >> reporter: and monica cent comrie lease add statement at anything that no classified information was accessed by the hackers saying it was simply a case of cyber vandalism while today president obama focused on safeguarding against other kinds of cyber crimes. we've seen the major impact hackers can have from the attack on sony. >> you want us to kill the leader of north korea. >> reporter: even u.s. central commands twitter and youtube pages were hacked today with pro-isis messages covering its profile pages. >> i can tell you this is something that we're obviously looking into and something that we take seriously. significant difference between what is a large data breach and the hacking of a twitter account.

>> reporter: but today president obama's focus was on cyber security for individuals annoyancing proposed legislation aimed in part at protecting against identity theft. >> so this is a direct threat to the economic security of american families and we've got to stop it. >> reporter: following the high profile breaches at retailers including target and home depot the president wants lawmakers to pass the personal data notification and protection affect it would require u.s. companies to alert customers within 30 days if there's a breach that compromises their personal information. meeting at the federal trade commission today, president obama also discussed proposed legislation focused on banning companies from selling students' information. >> we want our kids privacy protected whether -- wherever they sign on or log on including at school. >> reporter: and the president's push continues tomorrow with another meeting focused on ways the government can work with the private sector to increase cyber security. it's a topic he also plans to

highlight in next week's state of the union address. reporting live marci gonzalez channel6 "action news". rick back to you. >> thank you for that report. employees of a philadelphia charter school which suddenly closed its doors for good over the holiday break are in a somewhat precarious if this position tonight. not only are they out of work but they say they haven't been paid for the time they did put in and they're even having trouble getting unemployment. "action news" reporter david henry is live at school district headquarters in spring garden with more on this story. david. >> reporter: yeah, rick, they are not school district employees but they came here to district headquarters today looking for help. they got a sympathetic ear but nothing that addresses their immediate needs. >> when will i receive my money? >> reporter: 175 palmer charter school employees are owed a month's worth of back wages. they lost their jobs be and benefits when the walter palmer charter school abruptly closed its doors late last

month. now they say they can't even get unemployment benefits because the phones at the school are off and the state can't confirm the school is closed. >> this is a slap in the face for all the years of dedication. >> reporter: long time employees say they're now in danger of losing their homes and everything they've worked for. >> facing being homeless with my children because i'm not going to have to pay my rent and utilities bills are coming in. >> reporter: they were desperate enough to come to the school district looking to help. they say the district failed in its overnight responsibility. the district says it has no oversight bylaw. >> the district has very limited ability to oversee schools -- charter schools per state law. they're their own entity, they're their own school district. >> reporter: the out of work palmer employees say the district will be held responsible along with palmer school administrators. they'll be filing a lawsuit and presenting evidence of alleged criminal activity to local and state law

enforcement. the palmer school is now liquidating its assets as it tries to dig out from under a mountain of debt. the former employees wonder where all the money went. >> we certainly know it didn't go to us because we are still without pay we're still without the opportunity to receive our unemployment compensation and we know it didn't go specifically totally to the education of our children. >> reporter: i spoke with walter palmer, the founder of the school, and he says there was no illegal activity at the school. he says he will not run away from his obligations and that he will be around until all of this is resolved. live at school district headquarters, david henry channel6 "action news." monica. >> thank you david. a frightening wakeup call for a residents of a home in south philadelphia just after midnight a bullet came flying through the front window of his house in the 2700 block of cantrell terrace. fortunately nobody was hit. police are still trying to track down the person who shot it. >> delaware lawmakers have crafted a new bill to close a

loophole and hopefully curb the high rate of gun violence among young people in the first state. attorney general matt den announced the legislation along with cosponsor senators margaret rose henry and representative larry mitchell. if passed it would guarantee prison time for offenders caught with guns that are prohibited from having because of a conviction from when they were 16 or 17 years old. the current law prevents a juvenile's record from being taken into account once they are an adult. >> individuals targeted by this bill are not young adults who are new to the criminal justice system or have just made a single mistake. these are people who have violent histories and are now on top of that illegally holding firearms. >> the bill specifically targets offenders under the age of 24. >> well, if you stepped outside today at all you know it was a better day to be inside. the day started with freezing rain. once that cleared, it wasn't very pleasant anymore. umbrellas were mandatory and of course on the roads the windshield wipers were working overtime. >> all right, matt pelman is working overtime.

no, but he is working overtime tonight because it is so busy for folks trying to get home. >> it's been very busy. normally i like slushys, rick and monica but not the slushys out there today. temperatures are above freezing so you're not getting new icing but perhaps if they didn't clear out some of the slush earlier today on untreated surfaces you could find some slick spots. this is the schuylkill expressway at south street. the problem here is that the traffic lights are dark so it's every driver for him or herself, people stopping and then trying o go but it's an accident waiting to happen and it's causing delays to spill back onto 76 here at the south street interchange. on the big picture earlier problems head towards the ben franklin bridge have cleared out but we still have delays on the vine and schuylkill and that broken down truck on city avenue northbound side of bala avenue as you come away from mcdonald's and saint joe's. you're seeing delays because one lane is getting by. in limerick a crash along ridge pike on royersford road. accident involving the

have a lot of moisture overhead. in fact as you look at some of the rain full we picked up with this weather system that moved through overnight and early this morning it continues this afternoon picked up more than a half inch of rain there in philadelphia, .87 in dover little more than a tenth of an inch in reading over all a tenth to close to an inch of precipitation across the region and the icy accumulation no more than a tenth of an inch of ice and that ice concern is starting to wayne and end much temperatures outside this evening it's 38 in philadelphia, same thing in millville, 37 for dover, 33 in the poconos along the coast in sea isle see 41 degrees. lancaster coming in at 34. satellite 6 along with action radar there's the moisture that we're tracking and the frontal boundary still off to our west and once this sweeps on through from a west-east direction we do have some improvement and some clearing on the way. future tracker 6 has you covered. at 10 o'clock tonight a lot of that precipitation starting to end for philadelphia but some residual moisture hanging on across areas in south jersey. it clears the coast by midnight and then the winds pick up on the backside which

will help to remove the cloud cover for the rest of tonight. the setup for tuesday however, you have high pressure over the northern plains and the great lakes. so temperatures tomorrow around 30 degrees in philadelphia, struggling to reach the freezing mark. plenty of sunshine nonetheless with those northerly winds however, wind chills tomorrow will be close to 20 degrees. high pressure moves off shore midweek and then we're tracking an area of low pressure coming just off the coast of the carolinas. i think the bulk of this precipitation will stay away midweek but it will throw more in the way of cloud cover back as cross our region and we have to allow for a flurry or two south and east of philadelphia. that high temperature chilly. a lot of that moisture will stay away because high pressure to our west will help to suppress this energy away from our region. the call from accuweather that early rain and then watching out for refreezing at temperatures tonight drop below freezing and at 28 in the city, 24 degrees in the suburbs so the concerns any untreated surfaces driveways
