bucks county. officials say 19-year-old quiana alvarango of quakertown was killed when the car she was riding in lost control and crashed. happened last night in the 1900 block of trumbauersville road in milford township. the 18-year-old driver was ejected from the car and taken to the hospital. no word yet on her condition or his condition but state police are looking into weather icy roads played a role in the accident. a new road way in bucks county will ease traffic congestion in bensalem township. they cut the ribbon on the new extension at the intersection of galloway road and route 513. also called hulmeville road. it will not only improve traffic along 513 but also give better access to several businesses and the pennsylvania turnpike. >> now that the winter chill has settled in it's prime time to head to the ski resorts. colder weather good business for them. as we take a live look at conditions at bear creek people enjoying themselves. it's easy to forget this past december was pretty mild. as a result several ski resorts in pennsylvania only had about half of their trails opened by christmas when they would have hoped to have had at least 75 percent opened but the cold is back as you mentioned and hopes have been renewed to finish the ski and snowboard season in strong fashion. blue mountain was off to a great start opening its slopes a week before thanksgiving. it was the earliest opening day in blue mountain history. >> but then we had warm weather all the way through december and it's only been within the last two weeks where we've basically have been 100 percent opened by this weekend. >> reporter: it has been tougher to keep the slopes snow covered at bear creek mountain resort located in macungie lehigh county where it's usually just a few degrees warmer than the poconos. >> a lot of times unfortunately those two or 3 degrees, four or five whatever it may be makes a huge difference in the ability for us to make snow or not. >> reporter: but the

pennsylvania ski resorts have new hope in it seems old man winter made a new year's resolution to actually do his job. with recent temperatures dipping under the 20-degree mark conditions have been nearly ideal to turn on the snow guns. as a result, most regional resorts expect to have either all or nearly all of their trails opened by this weekend. and with the martin luther king and president's day holidays approaching, that is good news for the resorts and the skiers and snowboarders many of whom say this year is still better than last year deemed by many as too snowy and too cold. >> last year i got out whenever the roads weren't impossible. >> which was rarely last year. >> that it was that it was my friend. >> reporter: either way 72-year-old matt mcgran says a bad day skiing still beats a great day at work. >> i'm still a kid having a good time and learning to enjoy it more and the more you do it, the better you get the better you get the more fun you have at it. >>

all right. we have 24 to 36-inch bases here at bear creek and in blue mountain and as long as temperatures remain below freezing during the overnight hours in particular, they still expect to count this ski season as a success. reporting live from bear creek, walter perez channel6 "action news. >> thank you walter. time to get a check of our "action news" traffic report tuesday night. >> matt pelman standing by in the "action news" traffic center. it is a tuesday night and how is the traffic this evening matt? >> not sure i would be considering the evening commute a success so far. we have a few issues that we're watching out for rick and monica but this one no longer an issue. they fixed the traffic lights along south street at the schuylkill expressway. still, though, you're looking at plenty of eastbound traffic here coming away from the roosevelt boulevard through this point south. couple extra minutes on that eastbound travel time. bunch of issues in new jersey this afternoon in robbinsville a crash along 195 eastbound side right by the turnpike take out a lane. and they're still making repairs on that water main break in moorestown right by the friends school blocking off main street in the

process. stick with central avenue or 38 as alternates there. chestnut street also blocked as a result of the water main break. chester avenue gets you around that. watching a crash in runnemede camden county along holly avenue at clements bridge road also one in winslow township camden county along mays landing road at piney hollow road and in egg harbor township a vehicle flipped over along the garden state parkway southbound past pleasantville but everything is off to the side so you can get by. that update on those septa trolleys this evening. the route 10 shuttle busing between 48th and lancaster and the malvern route because of a water main break an crash has us shuttle busing on the 15 between 41st and 63rd. we'll check again rick and monica in the next half hour. >> okay, thank you matt. we have the very latest now on south jersey husband who is in court today and charged with the murder of his missing wife. >> that's right. and we have the latest from david henry live in mount holly on the missing erica crippen crosby, david. >> reporter: yeah, monica, erica crippen crosby's family came here looking for answers

but they did not learn much. during the first very brief court appearance by her husband, kyle crosby who is accused of killing her. >> are you going to apply for a public defender? >> no. >> are you going retain private counsel? >> yes. >> reporter: 28-year-old kyle crosby showed little emotion as the charges against him were laid outer in court for the first time. one counter of furthery murder and two counts of child endangerment. he's accused of killing erica and abandoning his daughter and stepdaughter. erica's relatives sobbed quietly in court never getting the answer to a burning question: where is erica? her body hasn't been ground. >> without erica we're still lost. you know, we're grateful that kyle is here and he has been caught but we're still missing erica. >> reporter: erica was last seen alive with kyle the night of december 30th at a restaurant in cherry hill. her family became concerned and asked the police to check on her on january 7th. they went to her house with the police and found erica's

pocketbook and coat and signs of a struggle. they asked police to open the trunk of her car but they say the police told them they couldn't do it without a search warrant. they questioned crosby but let him go. the next day both he and the car disappeared. >> it was erica's car. it wasn't kyle's. and the fact that they wouldn't check it, we would have had erica today and we would have had closure. the fact that they let him go to do this and i don't know where she is is will haunt us forever. >> reporter: crosby was arrested last night when police stopped him in erica's car in bellmawr. investigators say they found evidence in the trunk that they believe is connected to her disappearance. but they don't have her body. it could be anywhere between here and baltimore. >> he was gone for five days and we verified by various surveillance and other means that he was as far away as baltimore maryland and places in delaware.

cases reported to the state health department shows last week the number of cases actually went down from the week before. and it's a little bit below what was reported christmas week. but overall flu activity is still widespread in pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. and the centers for disease control and prevention says hospitalizations and deaths from flu complications continue to rise in the elderly and the very young. children under five are one of groups with the greatest risk. >> young kids may not have seen certain strains of flu so the first time somebody is exposed to a specific strain it can be more severe. >> now, if you have not been vaccinated you should still get a flu shot. it may give you some protection against the flu strain going around and it can protect you if we get a repeat of what happened last year when a second strain made the rounds in march and april. and in other health news today, we have a live facebook

>> time for accuweather. at the "action news" big board meteorologist cecily tynan here. cold sunshine but things are switching up a little bit tomorrow. >> could it be a carbon copy of today. >> little bit different tomorrow. more clouds, maybe some snow showers south of philadelphia but it won't be quite as cold but we are live on sky 6 taking a look at the skiers and the boarders at spring mountain ski resort. the good news for this cold weather is that the ski resorts can make a lot of snow and that's what they've been doing. temperatures right now generally in the 20's. 28 degrees for philadelphia. our high this afternoon 32 degrees. that's 8 degrees below the normal high for this time of year. allentown right now 23, wilmington 28, millville 29 and wildwood currently 30 degrees. the winds have died down but

still we have winds generally six to 15 miles per hour out of the north so when we have temperatures this low doesn't take much to create a wind chill. the wind chill makes it feel like 14 in allentown feels like 18 in trenton, 19 in millville and the wind chill in philadelphia currently 20 degrees. satellite6 along with action radar showing you see some of this moisture beginning to build off the southeast coast. that's low pressure. last week some of the computer models were indicating that this would really cane strength become a big nor'easter. that's not going to happen. this will remain weak, it will pull off the coast but it will be close enough that we'll get some clouds and parts of our region could see a brush of snow during the morning hours tomorrow. future tracker 6 showing 6 o'clock in the morning a lot of clouds and then some of that moisture again developing south of philadelphia. little bit of rain at the coast. it will be cold enough that most areas this will be snow showers. it moves off pretty quickly. we're left with the clouds

cyber security. the search is on for a thief who did not hesitate to take what he wanted from an unsuspecting victim. it was caught on tape. plus former sportscaster turned criminal defendant don tollefson takes the stand again in his theft trial. >> now the details. today president obama proposed sweeping legislation to help improve cyber security. the bill's goal is to encourage the private sector to share information with the department of homeland security when it's been targeted by hackers. in return they would receive safeguards from the federal government. karen travers is live with more on today's announcement. karen. >> reporter: good evening, wreck. cyber security is certainly getting a lot of attention these days because of the sony hacking and yesterday's hit on u.s. central command. president obama said today he understands americans are concerned about their privacy but he wants to see greater cooperation between the government and private

companies. president obama says cyber hacking is a real threat that can have devastating consequences. >> protecting our digital infrastructure is a national security priority and a national economic priority. >> reporter: so today he urged congress to pass legislation that promotes better information sharing between private companies and the government. >> we've got to stay ahead of those who are trying to do us harm. >> reporter: earlier today president obama sat down with congressional leaders at the white house. he said that cyber security is one area where democrats and republicans can work together. >> with the sony attacks that took place with the twitter account that was hacked by islamist jihadist sympathizers yesterday it shows how much more work we need to do. >> reporter: the president was referring to yesterday's shocking cyber attack on the u.s. military. suppose isis followers managed to take over the twitter feed and youtube page of u.s. central command.

lows see and senate leader reply mitch mcconnell were among the attendees but notably absent from today's meeting senate minority leader harry reid still recovering from a serious fall at his nevada home last month. we now know the name of the woman who died when smoke filled a train on the d.c. metro system. she is 61-year-old virginia resident carol glover. officials say an electrical malfunction caused the smoke but investigators are still trying find out exactly what went wrong. this is cell phone video from the incident. and it is just one of a multitude of questions in the wake of the incident that center dozens to the hospital. d.c.'s mayor said today that firefighters responded with an an -- a customary time. the trapped passengers struggled to breathe as thick smoke filled the train. many described the fear and chaos as they waited for rescuers to arrive. >> no cell service. i was trying to call my

parents, friends of parents and then everybody starts coughing and then everybody's black stuff everywhere. >> reporter: d.c.'s mayor is newly elected. she says her administration is reviewing the fire department's response. the white house says there's no evidence of terrorism. an underground fire near no,'s penn station caused headaches for some travelers. the fire broke out just before 2:30 a.m. at a construction site that was two floors below ground its unclear how the fire started but it has been ruled accidental. it took crews nearly three hours to put it out. no one was injured but many trains were diverted from penn station for a bit of a time. world news tonight with david muir will have much more on the deadly incident inside the d.c. subway system last night including firsthand accounts from people who were rescued. you can watch that following "action news" at 6:00. >> former philadelphia sportscaster don tollefson was back on the stand today in his ongoing theft and fraud trial. he's representing himself against charges that he took

money but never delivered travel packages sold to benefit charity. "action news" reporter chad pradelli live outside the courthouse in doylestown with more on today's testimony. chad. >> reporter: monica, don tollefson spent much of the day calling character witnesses who testified about all of the charitable work don tollefson has done over the years but what they could not do is defend him on accusations he stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from other people. don tollefson walked into court today and once inside took the stand in his own defense. his testimony was long winded and at times had at least one juror nearly nodding off. he testified for nearly an hour but a youth trip he organized in the 2012 summer olympics in london. in simple terms it was a lavish trip that cost roughly $75,000. >> you have a large picture of charitable work that i did for these children and that that comprised a lot of years and a

lot of money. >> reporter: tollefson says of 2012 he began to run out of money. he calls himself a bad businessman. but prosecutors say the roughly 200 victims were bilked out of $340,000 and bogus sports travel packages would call him a crook. >> it's a classic ponzi scheme. he's taking from the people that paid him already and booking trips for people that are trod go and things bound to collapse and that's exactly what happened. >> reporter: tollefson claims his money trouble began after losing radio and tv jobs including with the philadelphia eagles. those opportunities dried up many of his fundraising efforts. today the judge allowed subpoenaes for several high ranking eagles officials including executive vice president of football operations howie rows man who according to the court is vacationing in turks and caicos. >> to testify about what i did with the eagles, why i was fired by the eagles and what i had expected from the eagles if i had not been fired.

>> reporter: and the prosecutor tells me he expects testimony to wrap up early next week. then it will be in the jury's hands. i'm live in doylestown, chad pradelli, channel6 "action news." >> all right, thank you chad. richard plotts the man accused in a deadly shooting at mercy fitzgerald wellness center in darby told the judge today he wants to plead guilty now. the 49-year-old interrupted his public defender to make that declaration during his video hearing. plotts is charged with murder in the july killing of his caseworker theresa hunt. psychiatrists lee silverman was also wounded in that shooting. >> a long time delaware county high school football coach is heading to trial on charges he was involved in a hit and run while drunk. today a judge found there was enough evidence against haverford high school coach joseph gallagher to move forward. he's been at haverford for the past 23 years is accused of hitting a car in prospect park last november and then taking off. he was later arrested at his

home. in south philadelphia investigators are asking the pub particular to help identify two men who held up a cell phone store last tuesday. this is video inside the cellular express and prepares on the 1800 block of washington avenue. the suspects cleared out the register then forced a clerk to open a safe in the back. the gunmen got away with several iphones from a display case. >> philadelphia police are also looking for the man in this surveillance video from mayfair. they say he punched a man and stole his mac book laptop while in the 7-eleven in the 2900 block of cottman avenue christmas eve. now, detectives say the victim had put an ad for the laptop on craigslist and then had arranged to meet the buyer in that store. fortunately the victim was not seriously hurt. a chester county schoolteacher is favoring charges that she had sex with one of our students. she's 35 year old sara o'neill and teachers at the church farm school in exton. detectives say o'neill started the relationship with the student when he was 16 years old.

>> facebook has launched a new initiative to help locate and safe the lives of missing children. the social ned work site is joining forces with the national center for missing and exploited children. as soon as as amber alert is issued users who live nearby will see a post on their news feed. that post will include a picture explain where the child was last seen and what he or she was wearing. >> when people receive these alerts on their phones we want them to know that this is very rare and they're in a position to be able to help. >> more than 700 children have been found since amber alerts ban in 1996. >> eastern alabama school principal is asking students to bring canned food to school not for the hungry but to use as a weapon a way to fight off any possible school intruders. a letter went home explaining to parents the cans can be used to stun enoch out -- even knock out a intruder. the school superintendent reassured parents the cans will be a last resort and says they'll be stored in

few flurries. not a major concern. we'll show you the picture outside. action cam was outside earlier today. looking at ocean city. isn't that gunfire there in new jersey. the waves brushing up against the water and rocks there. conditions are pretty calm but it is chilly and you notice the clouds are starting to drift across the areas south of philadelphia and we'll talk about the reason why. but definitely chilly on our tuesday. the high temperature reached at midnight and at 38 degrees and these numbers were falling and coming back up a little bit. right now in philadelphia coming in at 28 degrees. so when you factor in the wind chill with those winds coming out of the northeast it feels like 14 in allentown feeling like 20 in philadelphia, 9 degrees the current wind chill in the poconos and it feels like 18 degrees in wildwood. here's satellite6 along with action radar. clouds drifting northward across the delaware and lehigh valleys. it's all thanks to this area of low pressure just off the coast of the carolinas so some light precipitation some light rainfall right now across that region. this area of low pressure is

"action news" reporter vernon odom is live at the scene of the shooting tonight. vernon what have police been able to find out?

>> reporter: not a lot jim. they're probing very hard but they're concluding this was not a robbery not a random attack. they're all over this part of north philadelphia tonight looking for answers and asking for the public's help to find the killer who struck here at 12th and jefferson in broad daylight. this is murder victim kim jones of north philadelphia. the city's 14th homicide victim of the new year. jones a social worker was gunned down just after 9:00 this morning as she waited for the septa bus number 23 at 12th and jefferson to go to her program director job at a known profit center city agency working with troubled families. this was her daily routine. police say a gunman appeared out of nowhere and shot her once in the back of the head. >> someone knew her routine somebody knew that every morning she got on the bus at that time to go into work and ambushed her. >> reporter: jones was the mother of two adult children. she lived about a half block from this bus stop for most of her life. at her agency turning points
