for the source of the water. it is a mystery. it's a mess. it is that time of year. wednesday night and the big story on "action news" tonight is emergency work for the philadelphia water department. live on the scene is "action news" reporter kenneth moton. what's the situation now? >> well jim, it is quite a scene and it is quite a mess for the philadelphia water department crews who are still trying to turn this thing off. it's become the old faithful of northeast philadelphia out here where thousands of gallons of water are shooting from this 10-inch water main on a private piece of property on bluegrass road on the boulevard here. they have been dealing with the break since about 7:00 p.m. they say the main does not supply water to customers, it is a fire service line used for firefighting. no residents lost water. the force of the water is strong

sending water more than 150 feet into the air. because of the temperatures the water is freezing quickly. we are standing here and watching the ice form on nearby trees. the branchs are snapping and falling. and they are trying to isolate the main but there have been major challenges. >> it is impressive. surprising, i am not sure. water mains contain a lot of pressure and depending on the type of break you have water can shoot directly up in the air air, or spread out over the ground. >> a live look from chopper 6 hd at the scene in northeast philadelphia. overhead you see the water shooting out of that 10-inch water main. again no customers lost water service but that could change as they continue to work on this problem. as you look at this geyser here yes we know this is the time of year, the time of the season where so many water main breaks in our area. i think in the past few weeks, actually the past few hours

owner surprised them pulling his own gun and fires back at them forcing them to flee without getting so much as a dime. we spoke exclusively with "action news" about the botched hold up. police say around 7:00 p.m. last night two men went into the grocery. the own behind the counter as he and a friend in a red rule-over watched tv. and they pulled a gun and put it to the side of his head. >> he grabbed me from here. i felt really cold against my ear and he told me yo don't move. and i stayed calm. because what can do i? >> the store owner realized what was going on and rushed for his gun. the gunman fires a shot at him and he quickly returns fire. >> did you have any time to think? >> nah. i not thinking. >> you just reacted? >> yeah reacted like that. >> and running for cover as a

woman customer in the store grabs her son and shields him. and the store owner's son came out of the back with a plate of cheesesteaks not knowing what happened. >> i couldn't believe it. i was in shock. i couldn't even sleep lat -- last night. >> and the gun struck the owner in the shoulder and they say he is lucky he did not strike vital organs. it is the first time someone has tried to rob him. >> never been through this before? >> no. >> and yet, you move so quickly. >> yeah you know? >> and the police continue to search for the two bandits, asking anyone who has seen them or knows the where abouts to contact the police. >> thank you. one of america's most wanted fugitives in custody font. 43 year old tam minh le accused of tying up three men in a

southwest philadelphia home stabbing them all and dumping them into the schuylkill river last august. two of the men died but one of the victims survived and swam to shore for help. after months on the run, the u.s. marshall captured le yesterday. saying he was involved in vietnamese gangs and motivated to murder because of a drug and gambling debt. the authorities say the u.s. capitol the i tended target of a lone wolf from ohio by the name of christopher lee cornell. and the f.b.i. agents arrested him this morning after he purchased a lot of fire power. the arrest comes amid an atmosphere of ever-heightened vigilance in the wake of the paris terror attacks. more from "action news" reporter at the "action news" big board. >> jim, this is the man in question, christopher lee cornell. he is 20 years old. officials say he was in the final stages of traveling from cincinnati, ohio to d.c. for an

all-out assault. they say cornell went inside of this gun shop in suburban cincinnati purchasing two m-15 rifles and 600 rounds of ammunition. once he walked out of the shop the f.b.i. agents tackled him and took him into federal government. the f.b.i. says cornell had been plotting an isis-inspired attack on the u.s. capitol where he had hoped to set off a series of pipe bombs aimed at lawmakers. and cornell's father spoke out tonight. >> he is like a big kid. his best friend is his cat, mikey. >> as for how the f.b.i. was able to foil the plot cornell was communicating with a partner that was going to help him carry out the talk but that was an f.b.i. inperformant. and security beefed up at the national guard plant in delaware. after six vehicles approached the entrance either asking for

no surprise that atlantic city's revenue on the downslide. report taking in $2.74 billion last year which nearly cuts in half how much the industry took in in 2006. but part of this obviously is due to the four casino closings. digging deeper into the numbers, the different story begins to emerge. every casino in atlantic city actually had a better year with revenue up except caesar's and taj mahal. and a student under arrest and charges of distributing a sexual video of a classmate. the suspect a 14-year-old boy, as is the victim. state police are investigating whether anybody else was involved. this was the scene this morning in a car crashed into a

foot stuck on the gas pedal. through the car wash at 40 miles per hour his car jumped the track and tore off several pieces of equipment. fortunately anybody was hurt not even the driver who walked away with a few scratches. a teenager is being credited with saving a police officer's life. the same officer who had just arrested him. cameras inside of the fort lauderdale booking facility show 17 year old jamal rutledge in hand cuffs as he processes him. the officer collapses and he yes, ma'ams -- yells for help and the officer is fine. and a crash in odessa and the prisoners not wearing seatbelts were hand cuffed together in pairs.

the space station emergency is over. and they are safe. in a rare scare at 4:00 a.m. an alarm warned of a possible toxic ammonia leak. it turns out to be a false alarm. nasa says the computer problem may have set it off. 11 hours after the warning the crew allowed back on the american side. unexpected slump in retail sales at the u.s. city during the holiday shopping season. the commerce department sales down in december the biggest drop in a year. analysts are not terribly worried. many of the reasons the store made money were positives for consumers. gas prices falling, big discounts and the holiday season stretched back into october, so fewer people needed to buy last minute. listen up google is trying to make it easier to have conversations in other languages. the company released a new

shy of the average high for this time of year with a mixture of sun and clouds. all in all a pretty nice january day. on friday our temperature up 1 degree to 40. but it's going to feel a lot cooler. right ahead of the cold front we get winds out of the west-northwest up to 30 miles an hour. wind chills in the teens and 20s. and then behind that front, the front moves through dry. and another area of high pressure builds in the first half of the weekend. that will bring us loads of sunshine, but a chill on saturday. and sunday is the flip side. it will be mild but i am tracking some rain on the way. so the bus stop forecast tomorrow bundle up the kids but maybe not quite as much as this morning. maybe lose one or two layers. and lots of sunshine. it will be seasonably cold not brutally cold. at 6:00 24 degrees. by 8:00 26 degrees. the dayplanner showing tomorrow we finally got rid of the clouds. a lot of sunshine mostly sunny skies at 7:00 25 degrees. more sunshine at 10:00, 31.
