that's representing the very heavy rain that's coming down in parts of the area. where we're seeing the blue color here, you see every now and then the blue color gets darker, north of this rain we're reporting freezing rain. freezing rain is rain that falls from the clouds but it freezes on contact with the ground because the ground is frozen. we have to get temperatures above 32 degrees, doylestown, a lot of work to be done here, 27 degrees pottstown 29. trenton, 32. norristown, 32. here's some good news here, northeast philadelphia up to 33. hopefully some of the ice will start melting there. philadelphia international 32. cherry hill, 32. south and east of that line, the heart of south jersey, delaware the temperatures have spiked into the 40s. that's the ocean air that will start charging north and west just like that over the next

tacony section of philadelphia. state road at long shore avenue, the water pipe broke around 5:00 a.m. when a construction crew on i-95 dug into it by mistake. the street department salted the road and the water department has cut off the water while they make the repair. avoid state road at long shore avenue the service line feeds one address in the area. but the area is closed down for now. a broken water main that caused headaches at a luxury center city hotel. the main ruptured between south and chestnut. 1th street was closed to traffic. pcw crews have repaired the main water and power has been restored and 12th street is open to traffic today. philadelphia police is investigating an accident that left a pedestrian fighting for his 4r50eu6. it happened at he -- fighting

for his life. a woman driving an suv struck a man and dragged him down the road. the man was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. police are trying to figure out why he was in the road. wilmington police are busy investigating the third deadly shooting in the city since the start of the new year. "action news" was on the scene on the 700 block of east 27th street. police say a man was a passenger inside this red minivan when someone opened fire around midnight. the driver sped off after the shooting and stopped here, the man was hit in the head and dialed. police are trying to determine where the initial shooting tombs and identify a suspect. police are investigating a double shooting that left two in critical condition happened on the 1500 block of adams avenue before midnight. a couple was shot here, but the woman managed to stumble out of the home and collapsed two

here here's the northeast airport, they have gone above freezing these areas bucks montgomery chester all seeing good freezing rain at this point. so again drive very, very slowly there's a lot of slick spots out there this morning. we'll zoom in a little bit tighter you can see the neighborhoods north and west of philadelphia. phoenixville norristown, malvern, exton downingtown heavy to moderate freezing rain. salem, elmer glassboro malaga moderate to heavy freezing rain. the ground is frozen, we just moved into this heavy batch of rain. you can see from the baltimore and washington d.c. and metro areas. richmond virginia reporting heavy rain, this slug, this wall of water all this will pull

north and east over the next couple of hours. looks like the heaviest is still to come him hopefully that continue to push in the milder air and everybody goes over to plain rain shortly. temperatures is playing a key role of what precipitation you're seeing. the magic number is 32 degrees. we have to get above freezing in order to see the ice melt. in south jersey, we've accomplished that. 50 in millville. wildwood, 48. atlantic city, 47. everybody south and east of the delaware river you've climbed above freezing, whatever icing you've been seeing in gloucester and camden counties it will melt. reading, 28 degrees, allentown poconos, 30. trenton, 32 at the freezing mark. philadelphia at the airport 32 degrees. same number for lancaster. we'll set it in motion for you. we'll show you how the numbers will play out. as the coastline system is winding up, the numbers are

shifting out of the southeast it will push to the northwestly. by 10:30 philadelphia 36 degrees reading 36. lancaster, 3. actually the only area at that point below freezing would be allentown. south jersey upper 40s and low 50s. the numbers climb into the low to mid 40s throughout the day. periods of rain expected from 10:30 on, some of it will be heavy at times you'll see ponding on roads reduced visibility thanks to low-level clouds and patchy fog. 3:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m., the bulk will be gone and we're left over with clouds and patchy drizzle. one of the big concerns with all the heavy rain moving in would be the poor-drainage flooding with the frozen ground. i-95 corridor north and west, major icing problems right now. icy roads, parking lots, sidewalks, have glazed

what the situation looks like on the roads. >> the situation penndot 146 trucks out, we have a flat freeze situation where we have icy conditions and many motorists don't travel this morning until the temperatures rise. we want motorists to use extreme caution. >> we know there are a number of road closures and bridge closures can you update on what is closed and open? >> we have major roads closed, westbound 76 approaching the gulph mills interchange. i-95 southbound near allegheny interchange. southbound 76 near west chester pike. street road in bucks county. these areas have the flash freeze situation that curse the precipitation freezes on contact

rain. we'll follow the blue line, north and west of the delaware river. you can see areas east of the delaware georgetown, north western burlington county, riverside have changed over to plain rain. temperatures right there 34 degrees, which is a good sign we're above freezing. jenkintown looks like you'll switch over to plain rain. philadelphia international you're up to 33 degrees, medford sitting at 32. looks like it's just rain there. west chester looks like we're seeing freezing rain issues. same thing with mall verb and phoenixville -- malvern and phoenixville. farther north and west we go we're picking up the darker shades of blue that's where the heavy freezing rain is falling at this point. bedminster perkisie, lansdale and doylestown. this area right here this is northern and central porks of montgomery and bucks and chester and delaware counties. take it slow, we're seeing major icing issues north and west of

we have breaking news right now you're looking at the schuylkill expressway at gulph mills. this is a major pileup involving more than two dozen vehicles due to icy roads. one person has died. again, 76 is closed in both directions between the blue route and gulph mills. this has been going on since 7:00 a.m. this morning. there are number of roads closed throughout the area, bridges, as well. >> a lot of people in the traffic have been sitting there this entire time. we're getting reports of people running out of gas trying to turn around we're starting to see back ups and accidents on the side roads around the schuylkill, as well. be careful if you have to head out this morning. let's head to chad perdelli live along the schuylkill expressway with more on these accidents chad? >> reporter: well it's a nasty situation out here, i can report on the schuylkill expressway the conditions are slowly improving specially in the last half-hour, we've seen several penndot

trucks make passes over the road applying the salt. it appears the ice is meting. at this point here on the schuylkill expressway the road is wet. it was an ugly scene around 7:00 a.m. if you were out on the roads no matter you were you likely witnessed an accident. the worse at the gulph mills and it one person killed a chain reaction of cars. multiple accidents. there were so many people injured state troopers had to bring the bus in to bus all the injured to area hospitals. talking to state police they say they have a tough time responding to the accidents because the roads are so treacherous. to give you an idea how bad it was, in delaware, a state trooper was injured he was responding to an accident in claymont delaware, on naamans road. a car slid into him.

he was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. there was an accident involving a fire truck it jackknifed and slit and involved in another accident. a spokesperson for the philadelphia police is urging drivers to stay off the roads if you can. you have many bridges that are shut down, have yet to reopen, because the roads are bad. philadelphia police, state police urging people to stay off the roadways, stay home if you can, a lot of accidents remain out here. troopers are trying to get to those accidents tend to the injuried and get them to -- injured and get them to local hospitals. two people were killed in an accident we're trying to get a crew to get footage of the accident. that gives you an indication how bad the roadways this morning. we have three dead with the schuylkill expressway and 476. i think looking here at the schuylkill expressway, that

conditions are improving. you have one and penndot getting out and apply the salt. you have the slowly increasing temperatures that chris sowers was talking about so it's making the roads wet and less icy in certain spots. hopefully that will continue in the late morning and early afternoon as the temperatures continue to increase. if you can, i would urge people to stay off the roads this morning and allow some of the state troopers and emergency sporngd to get to the -- responders to get to the accidents and get them cleared and the roads cleared. that's the latest from the schuylkill expressway, chad perdelli channel 6 "action news." back to you. >> three fatalities two on 476 that's the blue route and one on the schuylkill expressway. heather from septa joins us on the phone. can you hear us? >> i can. >> we should expect people to have major delays on buses and trolleys.

we're still seeing some icy conditions out here, but not as bad as an you're a or an hour half ago. storm tracker 6 live double scan showing whose seeing the freezing rain and whose seeing the plain rain. the blue is heavy freezing rain that's falling north and west of philadelphia. yellows, reds that's a heavy soaking driving rain across south jersey and delaware. same thing with the green shade. the magic number, 32 degrees, we have to get above that. a lot of area is getting above 4 -- 32. would it is up to 34. doylestown, 30. you've got a few more degrees to go. quakertown 30 degrees, as well. the darker the blue shade is, the heavier freezing rain that's coming down. they are seeing moderate to heavy freezing rain central portions of bucks county working north an east towards central

and northern portions of new jersey. note the far western suburbs there's not much of anything going on for places like lancaster and reading quakertown freezing rain, allentown not seeing much of anything at all either. it's this small, little corridor small little conveyer belt stretching from richmond to new york city. the leading edge we're seeing freezing rain, the blue color the major is heavy rain from richmond, washington, d.c. to baltimore and south jersey and philadelphia and new york city. temperatures wise these are the reporting stations. philadelphia 33. millville, a much milder 47. hopefully we get the ocean air into the northwest of the city shortly. reading, 29 below freezing. allentown, 30, below freezing. the poconos wildwood close in on 50. temperatures in the city should be about up to 38 degrees so

on these crashes and chad looks like the conditions are improving just slightly. >> reporter: conditions have improved in the last hour, hour and a half. you can see the schuylkill expressway penndot trucks are making several passes applying the salt. you have the slow increasing temperatures combined with the salt it appears that the icing has ended now the roads are wet. there are accidents all over the region. the worse one up the road on the schuylkill expressway the gulph mills exit three dozen vehicles involved a chain reaction of multiple accidents. one person was killed. there were so many people injured pennsylvania state police said they had to bring a bus in to get the people to area hospitals. we don't know how many others were injured state troopers are trying to tally the numbers. we're trying to on the find out on the blue route two others

were killed there. him penndot said it was the perfect storm in terms of. in terms of of the ice. it was what they called a flash freeze. le they said she had 140 penndot trucks on the roads but with the flash freezing it caught the drivers off guard. >> the trucks cannot be everywhere at one time. you have ice and frozen bridges and over passes can freeze more quickly because they don't have the insulation of the earth underneath them. this is the most difficult type of winter precipitation to deal with. >> reporter: and penndot says be careful on the elevated roads and bridges. many bridges in the area are shut down at this hour, as the roads get better they should be reopening shortly. this was an accident in claymont, delaware a state

trooper was responding to an accident when a car slid into him. he was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. talking to the troopers in pennsylvania and delaware they say they have had a difficult time responding to the accidents. authorities are urging people to stay off the roads if they can. this was an accident this frankford section of philadelphia involving a fire truck. some of the treacherous conditions out on the roadways, again, authorities urging people to stay home if they can. the roads appear to be getting slightly better as the salt gets applied to the roads and the temperatures slowly increase and get above freezing. looks like a situation that is getting better, but still nasty out there and the troopers are responding to the injured. at this point three people have died on the highways because of the icy conditions. i'm live along the schuylkill expressway chad perdelli channel 6 "action news." >> back to you. >> the action cam is taking a look at the base of the walt

32 degrees that's the number. once we get above that the ice will melt. the ocean air is pushing this way the freezing line will advance southeast to northwest. by this afternoon everybody goes over to plain rain. this is the coastal storm, this is starting to intensify. cold air became trapped in the valleys, north and west of philadelphia. you have a cold front approaching. that air had nowhere to go. of the with this low developing here it acted as a block to the east and the cold front from the west acted as a block there. the result was freezing rain and lots of it in the parts of area. i showed you this earlier in the broadcast, i'll show you again this is peter one of my twitter followers, this is base of ben franklin bridge about an hour ago, the ben franklin bridge westbound was closed. two lanes eastbound are reopened at this point. i believe the westbound lanes

"action news" was on the scene the 700 block of east 27th street. police say a man was passenger inside this red minivan when someone opened fire around midnight. the fire sped off after the shooting and stopped here. the man was hit in the head and died. police are trying to determine where the initial shooting took place and identify a suspect. in philadelphia, police are investigating a double shooting that left both victims in critical condition. it happened on the 1500 block of adams avenue in the city's frankford sceks before midnight -- section before midnight. police say two people were shot, the woman stamped out of the home and collapsed on fields street. they are both in critical condition this morning. tom wolf has announced appointments to his administration.

smaller than a hour ago. that's an indication that we're starting to win the battle and everything is going over to plain rain. that's the view at the philadelphia international airport. we have icing and we're seeing heavy rains and ponding on roads, you see the runways there, we're seeing ponding there. the visibility has become reduced we're seeing low ceilings and low level clouds and areas of fog. here's storm tracker 6 live double scan. the technology of double scans allows us to go street level to show us what's going on. we'll show you up to the minute what kind of precipitation you're picking up in the neighborhood. there's a clear dividing line stretching north of jenkintown and trenton and areas north and west of that, the line would run southwestward to doylestown and lansdale and norristown. this is the area that continues to see the moderate to occasionally heavy freezing rain.

one thing we're noticing even in places like quakertown you shot up to the freezing mark, 32 doylestown, 31. norristown 4 degrees jenkintown, northeast philadelphia, 35. starting to see the milder air move on in from the southeast. as we seth it in motion -- as we set it in motion, look at the freezing line, see how it's retreating to the north the cold air that's a sure sign that the milder changes are moving in. as this low gets cranking it's forcing all the warm ocean air in and this air is retreating to portions of new york and new england. some areas are close to 350 degrees, millville 47. atlantic city, at the airport 48. trenton, one degree above freezing, 33.
