crews are cleaning up the massive chain-reaction crash on the schuylkill expressway that killed one and injured dozens of others. >> icy conditions on the blue route near the marshal road and exit are blamed for a multi-vehicle crash that killed two. >> ice-covered roads in bucks and montgomery counties have caused a slew of crashes. we have team coverage, chad perdelli is along the ask can where the accident as -- along the schuylkill where the accident has the schuylkill expressway shut down. >> first we have changes weather, chris. >> reporter: the major partly of the storm is coming to a end the icing is coming to an end. the second problem is flooding. we'll zoom in west of philadelphia, this is the freezing line here across upper bucks and montgomery counties. quakertown reporting moderate

freezing rain at this point actually everybody west of that line. the far western suburbs, lehigh valley kutztown reporting moderate icing. everybody south and east has switched over to rain. here's pottstown town it's coming down in buckets across chester and delaware county and philadelphia county. this area of low pressure, coastal storm starting to get its act together now. we're seeing these waves after wave pulling northward even though you see how the freezing line is starting to retreat and pull to the north. now we have to get the heavy rain through, that will happen in the next a couple of hours is that storm continues to grow philadelphia well above freezing, the freezing mark 32, sitting at 36. wilmington 40 degrees, millville, 45. 50 nor wildwood, had a for dover, and atlantic city, 49.

the temperatures will continue to increase over the next couple of hours. i would pictures sent in from my twitter follower, this is jay look at the ice clinging to the branches. we have another one coming in from phoenixville this is colleen, look at all the ice hanging over the leaves. that was the problem with this, we had a flash freeze, the ground was so cold that the rain started falling it froze on act we had that terrible icing situation this morning. for the remainder of the afternoon all that ice is starting to pull away. from this point on it will be heavy rain and highs in the mid 40s, we're moving away from one situation and moving into the next which would be the flooding. i'll talk about that how much rain we'll seep in -- see in the viewing area and seven-day forecast. >> sky6 live hd looking live at

the ben franklin bridge. it's hard to see out there. the icing conditions forced the delaware port authority to close all the bridges. the ben franklin bridge has reopened in both directions, speeds are post the at 25 miles per hour. the commodor barry bridge has also reopened. two lanes are opened in each direction. speeds at posted at 15 miles per hour. betsy ross bridge open to new jersey only, westbound is closed at this time. let's go outside to chad perdelli who is following two deadly crashes chad. >> reporter: conditions are improving on the schuylkill expressway no real icing at this point, that's about that way for several hours. you can see the cars are moving along really well at this section of the highway. the westbound lanes are shut down off the gulph mills exit. one lane is reopened on the eastbound lane, some traffic is making its way through there. a nasty wreck at the mills

exit, 56 vehicles involved, 30 people injured. so many people were injured state police have to bring in septa buses to get the injured to hospital. one person was killed. on the blue route, west chester pike another bad accident involving a tractor-trailer, a couple of vehicles went underneath. two people were killed in that accident according to pennsylvania state police, west chester pike there was another accident involving several vehicles. if you were out this morning you know how treacherous the roads were. this was a flash-freeze event and hundreds of accidents reported and talking to drivers they said it was a big mess. >> there was a car stopped and i put on the brakes and i high plained up the hill and two

other cars spin out of control. nobody hit each other but they spin out of control. it was an icy mess. >> reporter: so really, some bad conditions, especially earlier this morning. it is raining a lot and now flooding is a concern, but the roads are not icing over at this point. temperatures well above freezing and again you have penndot penndot said they had over 140 vehicles on the roads so the salt is applied and the roads are getting much, much better, but still, you need to be careful if you're out there today, if you can stay home, as the troopers respond to the accidents that happened earlier today. i'm happy to report, late this morning, early this afternoon that conditions are improving on the roads. live along the schuylkill expressway chad perdelli channel 6 "action news." back to you guys. >> let's go to gene blum on the phone, can you hear us, good afternoon. >> yes i can nydia. >> one lane of the schuylkill expressway eastbound is open to

out since the on set of the storm. and we'll have our crews out today as long as necessary until the temperatures rise and any threat of icing is gone from the philadelphia region. >> a lot of people are asking about when the salt trucks were on the roads, you said starting at 4:00 a.m. >> we had our crews reporting in between 4:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. we had our trucks on the roadways after 5:00 a.m. this morning. again, we have many of thousands of miles to cover in the five-county region, but based on the forecast, the number of vehicles we felt that it was a situation it was going to be a rainstorm with mixed precipitation, it was not forecasted to be of an ice storm. >> thanks, gene blum. >> your welcome. septa had delays on most of

again, one lane eastbound is getting by. it's been closed since 7:00 a.m. when the accident happened. meteorologist chris sowers has been tracking the freezing rain all morning long. >> reporter: yes, the freezing rain is pulling away, but flooding is becoming a new issues. we go live on sky 6. there's smaller streams that have come up. obviously the water and heavy rain that moved in will create problems for the smaller creeks and streams. i'll get to the warnings and advisories. that's the view of the philadelphia international airport. visibility has come way down. freezing rain advisory continues until 1:00 p.m. for the far western suburbs and upper bucks and manage counties and the lehigh valley -- montgomery counties and we begin to see the freezing rain. storm tracker 6 live double scan allows us to get down to street level. we can show you who is seeing

>> sure, the closed portion from morgantown to the delaware bridge interchange to the new jersey line and quakertown interchange, we opened at 12 noon at a reduced speed limit at 45 miles per hour. it will be in effect until 2:00 p.m. today. even though the temperatures are increasing we're seeing some areas of fog settling in which is reducing visibility. it's depends on that situation whether we may extend the time operating under the reduced speed limits. we ask people to take it slowly and reduce their speeds. >> stay with us, we'll be right back.

injured. the blue route a multi-vehicle crash killed two people the road is close in certain areas. >> "action news" reporter, chad perdelli is along the schuylkill expressway where a deadly accident has part of the expressway shut down. >> we'll begin with the chris sowers and the changing weather conditions. chris? >> reporter: good afternoon eva, things are slowly improving on the terrace. we no longer have the icing conditions, but it's raining in sheets and we're getting puddles. across the street we're seeing ponding on those roads swell. that will be the big issue for philadelphia. national weather service continues the freezing rain advisory for upper bucks and upper montgomery and the lehigh valley and the far western suburbs in effect until 1:00 p.m. for an additional coating of freezing rain where

we're seeing temperatures below freezing. storm tracker 6 live double canal showing a rainbow of colors out here this afternoon. lots of heavy rain to the south. freezing rain to the north. we'll zoom in there first, this is upper bucks county. quakertown reporting moderate to occasionally heavy freezing rain macungie same thing. northeast extension route 100 and route 309 being impacted. south and east we go it's a completely different story we're seeing the heavy rain across south jersey and delaware, so much so we have a flood warning that's issued by the national weather service, some of the rainfall totals that are coming in are impressive. cobbs creek around the wilmington and philadelphia area has risen three feet in three hours, the christina river is starting to rise rapidly, as well. the flood warning is for the i-95 corridor wilmington through

philadelphia mainly for the small creeks and streams and roadway flooding. temperature-wise this was the issue this morning. everybody dropped well below freezing. we had some locations drop into the mid 20s. now everybody with the exception of reading has climbed above freezing. millville, 45. wildwood, 48. poconos, 43 degrees, and trenton presently showing 36. another issue here, visibility we're down to .8 in wilmington. .8 in philadelphia. 1.5 in philadelphia. 3 miles in millville and one in dover. yes the visibility is impacting philadelphia international. we're seeing delays mount there, as well. heavy rain theals -- that's the remainder of the arch, it's milder and temperatures climbing into the mid 40s 44 degrees is the forecasted high. later this evening a cold front comes through. it's a powerful front. temperatures will drop off again. we're not expecting widespread icing to redevelop thanks to

temperatures climbing into the 40s. there could slick spots tomorrow morning, i'll talk about that when i step back inside in just a little bit. guys. >> sky6 live hd looking live at the platt bridge. we have good news to report all the area bridges including the ben franklin bridge, the betsy ross bridge, the commodor barry bridge and walt whitman bridge are reopened. the delaware port authority closed all the bridges because of multi-vehicle accidents as well as problems with icy conditions. again, all the bridges are reopened with reduced speeds. >> all the bridges are open, but not all the roads are not open. let's go to chad perdelli along the schuylkill where they are seeing traffic issues. yes, welling thizing is over and traffic is moving along better along the schuylkill expressway, but the cleanup continues. traffic is moving just fine in this section but when you get up to the gulph mills exit it is shut down, one lane has reopened

on the westbound side, some of that -- eastbound side, this is due to one nasty accidents early this morning around 7:00 a.m. we had flash freezing on the highway. according to pay state police there was chain reaction accident at the gulph mills exit. 56 vehicles were involved, 0 people were injured one person was killed. now so many people were injured that septa buses were brought in to transport the injuries to the hospital. many of the injuries are considered minor but some are serious and one person did die. down the road on the blue route there was another accident where two people died a tractor-trailer jackknifed and two vehicles went underneath it. you get to west chester pike there's another accident injurying several people. talking to drivers if you were out this morning you know it was a big mess. >> very frightening, very, very

frightening, as long as i've been coming up this hill, i never had this kind of reaction in any bad weather. >> reporter: again, the roads are getting better. you have the temperatures getting above freezing. penndot said they would 140 vehicles on the roads around 4:00 5:00 a.m. but a penndot spokesperson said there will be isolated spots where the road freezes over. the westbound lains are shut down at -- lanes are shut down at gulph mills. one lane is open in the eastbound lanes, if you have to get out and drive, try to avoid the area and the other highways where there are road closures. it's ugly out here, it's wet but it looks like most of the icing is over. live along the schuylkill expressway, chad perdelli channel 6 "action news." >> we want to go to steve shapiro to the new jersey department of transportation. he is on the phone. good afternoon steve. >> can you give us the latest

update in new jersey? >> yeah, roads are improving as you heard temperatures are rising in south jersey, conditions in north jersey, there's still icing up there. temperatures are near freezing in some areas. the concern now is turning to flooding issues in south jersey. so you may start seeing roads having problems with that. one problem area, route 130 southbound all lanes are closed because of flooding in that area. >> anything else closed we can tell our viewers about? >> we have an accident route 55 that happened earlier this morning and there's a closure taking care of that accident. the turnpike and the garden state parkway have a 35-mile an hour speed restriction. there were a number of accidents on the turnpike.

they are being dealt with. >> i know you mentioned the flooding any particular areas of concern? the only concern is the area of 130. motorists should look at for standing water and things like that. >> you can track the forecast anytime by downloading the storm tracker 6 live app giving you live weather alerts posted for your area. >> we're following a developing story this noon, new castle county police are investigating shots fired at the home of vice president joe biden in greeneville delaware. they were out for the evening when someone drove by and fired the shots. it happened on a public road outside a security perimeter. secret security heard the shots and an agent saw the vehicle speeding off. we'll be right back.

up he upper bucks and upper montgomery counties south of allentown reporting moderate to occasionally heavy freezing rain. but everybody else down through here, south jersey, i-95 corridor delaware, reporting rain, some of it is coming down heavily at times. i'm going to zoom into chester county right now. look at the strip of red chadds ford chester downingtown and malvern. this is heavy rain being reported right now. they have seen over 3/4 of an inch. they have more to come. western portions of south jersey glassboro and gibbstown reporting heavy rain. eastern portions of caroline -- carolinas into new england we have an area intensifying off

the delmarva that is pushing in off the ocean it's changing everything over to rain. this cold air the cold air got trapped in some of the valleys early this morning. when the rain came on in, the cold air was in place that's why we had the icing issues. now we look tow west, we have a powerful cold front right here, this will charge through in the next 6 to 10 hours once this storms pulls off to the northeast. it will allow the cold front to pull through. the temperatures will start to drop again and we'll have to worry about the possibility of refreezing in parts of the area. national weather service has a flooding warning up for new castle county, up through wilmington and trenton. this is where we're seeing it is smaller creeks and streams get close to their banks. cobbs creek has risen three feet in three hours time.

you saw how heavy the rain is in that partly of the viewing area there's plenty more to come which means the smaller creeks and streams will rise. dover, 45. wildwood, 48. philadelphia, 37. that's a nice sign there. allentown sitting at 34. here we go temperatures for the remainder. afternoon, 2:00 p.m. we're sitting at 42. great sign, reading lancaster 40. trenton, 41. millville, 41. wildwood, 46. the cold front approaches probably over toward state college at 4:00 p.m. it will charge east and numbers will drop off again. midnight we're sitting at 32. that's the freezing mark. all areas north and west below freezing. if any of the roads are still wet. there's puddles out there, they will refreeze. be mindsful of that first thing tomorrow morning as you head out to work and school. there be slick spots out there.
