then heavy rain, caused a day of difficult, and very dangerous conditions. sunday night and the big story on "action news" is a deadly dangerous day on area road and now the the possibility of more icy conditions, overnight. >> that is right sudden freeze this morning took commuters by surprise and now with the wet road and dipping temperatures in the overnight hours, as drivers will need to be on alert for more dangerous black ice. >> we have team coverage tonight "action news" reporter annie mccormack is live on the schuylkill and wendy saltman on 202 in king of prussia but we will begin with meteorologist melissa magee with what we can expect overnight and into the morning, melissa that will be the big concern. the in moisture is moving off to the north and east and temperatures dropping below 32 degrees and that will lead to patchy ice and black ice. storm tracker six live double scan radar showing you this is moisture we had in the delaware and lehigh valleys north and west we had icing concern and then rain on that

and just before 7:00 a.m. a flash freeze caused multiple crashes including this one in upper merion, montgomery county, described as a chain reaction with three separate accidents involving 56 vehicles killing one and injuring 30. listening closely to this cell phone video capturing the chaos moments later. >> unaudible. >> reporter: thirty-one year-old eric blah of philadelphia died after he left his disable vehicle and was struck by a car. you can see drivers running to help someone pinned and hear their calls to 911. one person shouts a warning to watch for incoming traffic that had yet to be shut down. >> both side watch the car coming the other way. >> reporter: "action news" viewer who survived the pile up sent in these photos telling us he simply closed his eyes and prayed for the best as he began to slide. there is so many injuries, buses, came into transport those hurt to area hospital. state the police had another grizzly scene in radnor township delaware county on 476, and a double fatality

where a tractor trailer jackknifed, three vehicles who could not avoid the big rig slammed underneath. two drivers identified as thomas brennan of lansdale and jason anderson of dover delaware died, a third driver suffered major head trauma another 11 vehicles crashed in the same location and at least four were taken to the hospital. it didn't end there. near the 476 tragedy, object route three this woman described the the multi vehicle accident that she survived. >> i was frightened. i thought that was the end of me. i just thought it was the end of me, but, i'm still here by the grace of god. >> reporter: and state troopers telling us tonight that the majority of those people that were taken to the hospital, are expect to be treated and released, tonight. reporting live along the schuylkill expressway ann ie mccormack for channel six "action news". first responders were forced to deal with icy conditions as they made their

way to help others. action cam was at frankford avenue and margaret street in the frankford section. a philadelphia fire department ladder truck slid on the ice and jackknifed. fortunately no one was injured. penndot is doing what it can to avoid similar problems in the coming hours. "action news" reporter wendy saltsman is live along route 202 where crews are already preparing wendy. >> reporter: well, the worst here up near king of prussia mall are starting to dry out but with temperatures dropping they are becoming very slick in some areas, especially here in the northern counties penndot trucks are hitting the road to make sure that the tomorrow's commute is smoother and safer than today. penndot called in their troops this evening to salt road and minimize slipping and slide ago this led to those dangerous pile ups across our area this morning. >> had to go to work this morning and i sat in traffic for an hour an a half. >> i'm hoping tomorrow will be better. >> reporter: most commuters have been able to stay off the road this weekend many could

be making a treacherous trek on ice cover street back to work and school in the morning. >> i'm any of us because i drive to downingtown for school and i commute from like the pottstown area so, i'm just hoping maybe there is no school. >> reporter: at 8:00 trucks loaded up and started salting road that were already beginning to freeze, 135 trucks began working on highways mostly in chester and bucks county. >> i was on the phone with my mom, saying i need to get home. i live out in the reading area and there is black ice every where. temperatures dropping. >> reporter: tonight at midnight 22 more trucks will start salting philadelphia and delaware counties. >> you have in control over your car and you just slide. it is really scary. >> reporter: traffic jams wet road and news of deadly crashes, had some drivers worried about tomorrow's drive. >> typically you just have to take your time and just, don't end up in a ditch somewhere. >> reporter: penndot says

drive slow, give yourself extra space and be careful of slick spots or just stay inside. >> when i see icy road, we had this morning, i make sure i wait until everything is cleared up before trying to get out and venture out on the road. >> reporter: now as expected that penndot will be working throughout the night until the road are that you had, and now the biggest worry thinks black ice. we have in the seen a whole lot of snow on the road this season, but it is the the ice that you cannot see that is proving to be a much more dangerous hazard. live from king of prussia i'm wendy saltsman for channel six "action news". in the garden state state police handled more than 400 crashes and for a time, new jersey transit suspended all bus services. situation was worse in central and northern new jersey as compared to south jersey. still commuters all across the the state were forced to navigate highways littered with damaged vehicles from spin outs and crashes. new jersey turnpike and pal said parkway were among

melissa is here with another check from accu weather, very wet day, heavy rain road still wet and now temperatures dropping, not all a good combination. >> it is not a good combination, any rotation where you have standing water with temperatures tonight especially north and west dropping below freezing right new there will be a concern as you wake up tomorrow morning. give yourself extra time for the commute. you can see it is dry it is quiet, and no more ice, and rain but we have a concern as we go throughout the the the rest of the overnight hours.

we will show you the the picture outside sky six live in hd, down the shore in atlantic city and we have a pretty quite it and we will go through the overnight hours and atlantic city. we have pick up more than an inch and a quarter worth of rainfall, it is moving up. in philadelphia, it was a soaker as well daily rainfall, record reported at the airport with 1.84 inches breaking an old report of an inch of rain setback in 1930. outside tonight it is all about the temperatures and you can see these numbers on the 95 corridor at freezing mark or higher. thirty-four in the city. thirty-six in trenton. thirty-eight in atlantic city. thirty-nine in beach haven. looking to the north and west and we are seeing problems reading 32, freezing mark in allentown lancaster at 26 degrees. even though moisture has departed north and east you can see these numbers are coming back down below freezing especially with the northwesterly win.

big concern for patchy ice and blackizes specially north and west at the moment. satellite six with action radar, shows you this is what we had across our region earlier today. you can see that moisture pushing up into areas have of upstate new york and northern sections of new england. you cane cloud starting to clear out and break a apart across much of the mid-atlantic region. we will talk about what we can expect into monday morning, watching out for that black ice mainly for standing water any puddles you have around, secondary road i think main road will be, okay, a as far as driving on them but secondary road will be an issue, driveways and sidewalks, also a concern. the as we press forward and go into monday the big issue will be wind gusting in the morning anywhere from 23 miles an hour in philadelphia to 25 miles an hour in allentown and go throughout the afternoon hours and we will have gusts as high as 30 miles an hour. concern overnight early tomorrow morning will be area of patchy blackizes specially where there is standing water and wind kick up on the back
