>> good afternoon rick is off in the news this noon, security has tightened at the delaware home of vice president joe biden after somebody fires gunshots. a martin luther king day tradition continues at independence hall. but the big story on "action news" this noon is a deadly fire at a montgomery county apartment complex. it happened at the linwood garden apartments in cheltenham township overnight. john rawlins is live with the latest on the investigation. john. >> reporter: hi, sarah. well, firefighters left here a short time ago and left behind police tape and many questions and very few answers. there's an on going investigation. people living next-door did not know there was a fire here until firefighters alerted them. fire officials say the two-alarm fatal blaze was not called in as

a house fire only that neighbors smelled smoke in the area. when firefighters arrived at 4:30 they found two apartment units burning. >> police and fire crews were met with heavy smoke and fire and report of one person trapped. we got inside to the interior track. >> reporter: the first floor unit was unoccupied. the fatality was from the second floor apartment. we have 6 investigators from various agencies on the scene. as to when the fire started -- >> there's a fire investigation going on with the state fire marshal. >> reporter: is this a suspicious cause? >> that's to be determined. >> reporter: a lot of investigators here today. >> yes, sir. >> reporter: there's going to be an autopsy but it's not clear if that is today or tomorrow, officials have not released name of the individual who was killed

at joe biden's delaware home after shots near his house over the weekend. the vice president and his wife were not at home when somebody in a car fired several shots. the main house a few hundred yards off the road, nobody was hurt, the search continues. meantime, vice president joe biden spoke this morning at a breakfast in honor of dr. martin luther king junior. the organization of minority women hosted the event at the chase center on wilmington waterfront. biden talked about dr. king's message how it is more important today than ever before. >> we have to bridge that separation, particularly society as a whole but particularly today between police and the community that exists in some places. >> this was the 31st annual event in wilmington.

today is the 20th year for the greater philadelphia day of service. the city of philadelphia leads the nation in community service projects that honor the legacy of dr. martin luther king junior. thousands took part in today's project all across delaware and lehigh valleys. "action news" reporter, katherine scott reports from the flagship event at girard college. >> reporter: it is packed here at girl college today. there are 5,000 volunteers. there are people from all over the area taking part today honoring the legacy of dr. king. a day that's drawing 135,000 people throughout the region to volunteer their time in 1800 service projects. tracy williams brought her daughter and niece to girard college thinking it was important they pitched in the greater philadelphia martin luther king day of service. >> i wanted to bring them and

understand the importance of giving back. >> reporter: for the 6th consecutive year girard college hosted the signature project celebrating dr. king. the causes diverse but the goal united. >> as we brace his legacy of action, thousands and thousands are claiming that legacy of their own by doing almost 2,000 projects on this day and for many throughout the entire year. >> reporter: whether it was making scarves for children in need or promoting exercising for healthy living, volunteers looked around the gym for all the would come being done and felt inspired. >> this is unit, everybody taking up the cause it's a beautiful day. >> reporter: they are marking the 50th anniversary of the voting rights act outlining
