huge crowd behind me. they are rallying on independence mall listening to speakers who are up there on a stage just now starting to disperse after what has been a peaceful demonstration here in the center city philadelphia throughout the afternoon. this was the scene from chopper 6 hd as the march stepped off on north broad street after school district headquarters at about 1:00 this afternoon 1:30. they went around city hall and down market to sixth street. there was a huge police presence. roads were shut down throughout center city as this peaceful protest moved throughout the city and let's go to our ground video now. the demonstration is called the mlk day of action resistance and empowerment or mlk dare. participants of all ages races and religions were protesting all kinds of social causes. a higher minimum wage, police tactics, education funding for philadelphia schools. many here said they saw this march as the embodiment of

what dr. martin luther king, jr. stood for equality and activism. >> i came out because i support my black brothers and sisters, i support economic justice, i support -- i support reclaiming the image of martin luther king. >> just thrills my heart to see this kind of action and you know what really turns me on the fact that this is interracial. i mean, it's not just african-americans, it's not just whites. i mean, we're all here together. >> reporter: and we're back live here on market street. you can see the roadway is still shut down. they moved down market all the way here to independence mall and you can see a crowd still gathered here behind me. they are just now starting to disperse after what has been a peaceful protest on this martin luther king day. live on independence mall, i'm sarah bloomquist, channel6 "action news." >> allall right sarah thank you. the martin luther king holiday has become synonymous with

community service and today an estimated 135,000 people took part in projects all across our region. the action cam was at philadelphia's flagship event at girard college this morning. there were 5,000 volunteers at that site alone. some made scarfs for children in need. others promoted exercise and healthy living but everyone we spoke with today said they looked around at the massive response and just felt inspired by the sense of community they felt. >> we've come a long way and just the unity of everybody taking a monday morning arriving at 7:00 a.m., it's a beautiful thing. >> this is the sixth straight year girard college has hosted philadelphia's signature mlk event. >> vice president joe biden channeled the spirit of dr. king this morning as he called for a greater trust between police and the public they serve and remarks he put the organization of minute nor women's annual breakfast in

early morning fire at an apartment complex in montgomery county and this afternoon we learned the victim's name. john rawlins is live at the scene in cheltenham township with what we know about her and what investigators are saying about this. john. >> reporter: hi, alicia. well the young woman's family is just devastated by her unexpected death here. that's no doubt about that. as far as investigators are concerned they're saying very little at this point except that they are in the midst of a multi agency investigation into what sparked this fatal blaze. workers this afternoon boarding up windows scorch marks on the brick exterior evidence of an intense blaze here. calls from residents concerning heavy smoke in this area brought first responderring to the scene at about 4:30 this morning. >> police and fire crews were immediately met with heavy smoke. also had report of one person trapped. it was upon that time female

inside... >> reporter: a search by firefighters of the first floor apartment turned up it was unoccupied. the resident from the second story apartment perished. the family of 34-year-old rack keisha harrison identified her as the victim t-the long time certified nursing assistant was described by her family as loving, kind hearted a true jewel. investigators from several agencies are trying to determine the cause of the fire that took harrison's life. at this point authorities are not saying if the blaze started on the first or seconds floor. >> it's under investigation by the state and local fire marshal. >> reporter: is this a suspicious fire. >> still to be determined at this time. >> reporter: a lost investigators here? >> yes, sir. >> reporter: an autopsy has been scheduled. it's not clear when that will occur. authorities are signaling at this point they doubt they will have anything more to say tonight about the possible cause of this fatal fire. live in cheltenham, john rawlins channel6 "action news." brian. >> john, thank you. >> time now for check of the

away others were set free after a gun fight between boko haram and the cameroon military. soldiers say boko haram fighters used the hostages as human shields. they haven't said how many people died in the fighting. boko haram was behind a series of attacks in nigeria earlier this month that may have killed as many as 2,000 people. >> there was another series of raids in europe over the weekend to round up terror suspects but governments there say they are still on high alert. 40 people have been arrested across that continent in the last few days. people say they're still trying to break up terror networks and stop potential ah attacks. belgian officials are specifically looking for a 27-year-old man who they think has fought for isis in syria. they say he was behind a plot that was broken up last week aimed at killing police officers. top european investigators say these terror cells are only loosely connected which is rather different than what they've seen in the past.

now that that social media giant is looking for some more help. the company is more than a thousand job openings posted on its web site. positions include everything from sales to recruiting. and get this. facebook is also trying to push into new areas specifically with the use of drones. the company hopes to use drones to provide internet access in different or remote parts of the world. that means facebook is also looking for technicians engineers and flight test managers. there's a saying that the rich get richer and now at least one study is backing that up. the international aid agency oxfam says the richest 1 percent of people now control 48 percent of the world's wealth. it says if that trend continues at the current pace the wealthiest 1 percent will pass 50 percent by next year. that means 1 percent of the people will have more than the other 99 percent combined. the study gives several recommendations to world leaders on how to resolve that issue including raising the minimum wage and cracking down

the vehicles involve in the crash were brought here to jamison's together. talking with the drivers, they say it was a frightening ordeal and those that came out uninjured, well, they feel blessed. the chain reaction accident on the schuylkill expressway caught drivers off guard. as ron briggs vehicle began to spin, he prayed. >> i just hit the brakes, and started to spin, just grabbed the wheel, put my head up against the headrest and just said this is not going to go well. >> reporter: briggs was uninjured but his car was totaled. 30 others weren't as fortunate and were treated at local hospitals. 31-year-old eric blah -- blau was involved in the initial accident. he exited his vehicle. it would be a fatal move as another car slid into him. other drives tried to help blau. the chaos was captured on cell phone. >> watch the cars coming the other way. >> it's still surreal. i've seen the video several times and it's just -- it just seems like i can't believe

that i was there. i've never been through anything like that before in my life and hope to god i never will be again. >> reporter: two hours later another others were die on the blue route. several vehicles collided and wedged underneath a tractor-trailer. >> felt like a horror movie. it didn't feel like it was really happening. >> reporter: his minivan came within 10 feet of hitting the tractor-trailer. he's a volunteer firefighter from middletown township. he says he began attending to the most severely injured jason anderson of dover delaware and thomas brennan of lansdale. both men would later pass away. >> i was with both of them for about 20 minutes trying to stabilize them and talk to them and -- >> reporter: were they conscious. >> they were in and out. >> reporter: and those drivers tell me that police, firefighters and emt's did wonderful work in the response to those crashes. i'm live in king of prussia

chad pradelli, channel6 "action news." >> all right chad, thank you. ice might have also been to blame for a two-car accident in center city overnight. it happened near the intersection of 13th and vine just after 12:30. police say the driver went through a red light and hit another car. the force that of collision sent that other car onto the sidewalk. fortunately neither driver was seriously hurt. police, however, did have to close off the intersection until salt trucks could treat those roadways. what a mess it was yesterday. all across region. >> yeah, it really was brian and alicia. the good news is that temperatures this afternoon have been above freezing so we don't have an issue with that but we do have some things to watch for the rest of this week. so, we'll show you the picture outside. sky 6 live in hd we're giving you a nice shot of the ben franklin bridge on this monday afternoon. we did have sunny breaks earlier. otherwise looks to be mostly cloudy. temperature in the seventy three 43, winds out of the west at 9 miles per hour the wind chill at 38 degrees so

dr. king at the birthplace of liberty this morning. >> ♪♪ >> the united states coast guard academy cadet choir kicked off the 30th annual national bell ringing ceremony on independence mall. earnest evans better known as chubby checker and meredith l. henderson the north atlantic regional director of the alpha kappa alpha sorority served as the official bell ringers. >> classes were not in session but the halls were filled with students in the upper darby school district today. these kids were cleaning windows and otherwise sprucing up here at the high school as part of the district's martin luther king, jr. day of service commemoration. they were also treated to some inspirational words of wisdom from superintendent dr. richard dunlap. volunteers young and old helped spruce up the greater norristown police athletic league on harding boulevard today. this is one of many nonprofits taking parter in the national

day of service. the annual events in norristown have grown to more than 800 volunteers from just 40. a bucks county woman is facing charges for allegedly terrorizing a child. this is 33-year-old virginia bushman. police say the warminster woman chased a 10-year-old with a knife last week. bushman was arrested after the child reported the incident to administrators at mcdonald elementary. even though the child wasn't hurt bushman has been charged with assault and making terroristic threats. she's being held on half a million dollars bail. two delaware men are behind bars facing more than 160 charges stemming from burglaries in newly constructed oren 58d homes. state troopers arrested 27-year-old kevin trotter and 48-year-old nathaniel gibbs after they were spotted in a kent county development. an investigation revealed that the men were allegedly involved in breaking into homes and taking at appliances.

way. here's the setup for you on tuesday, breaks of sunshine, moderating is temperatures as well. high temperature on tuesday and at 43 degrees and as we go throughout the day on wednesday we'll be tracking that clipper system that's going to work its way eastward. the clipper moves in and it will be slow going for the evening commute by wednesday with a high temperature of just 36 degrees. so expect snowfall as we go throughout wednesday afternoon and into the evening hours. for philadelphia really wilmington cutting up into areas in interior south jersey right through surf city and points to the north and west, we could find 1 to 2 inches of snowfall and then for south jersey and delaware, this is going to start out as some rain f-not some mixed precipitation. i think you get the possible coating on the backside of this storm system if the cold air is still in place and that cold air catches up with the moisture on the backside of this clipper as it depart toss our north and east. the call for the rest of tonight partly cloudy brisk and cold, 30 in the seventy three, 23 in the suburbs.
