peaceful fashion. it is monday night. and the big story on "action news" tonight is the day to honor martin luther king, jr. for many it was a day of service. for others it was the day to follow king's example and march for what they believe. "action news" reporter kenneth moton live at independence mall with the full story tonight. >> justice, jobs and education were the themes for those who took part in the earlier march and rally today say all the issues are intertwined. [chanting] >> the national day of service. it was also a day of action in philadelphia. people from different backgrounds with different interests marching through the streets for the same goal -- working to right what's wrong. >> as you see by the number of

people out marching today, change is going to come. >> more than 3,000 people circumstance -- circled city hall. and part of the day of resistance and empowerment. and unions, activist and plain old folks demanding change. and social justice at the hands of police and fully funded education system. >> all supporting each other. labor youth, the association chapters. we are all in the same boat. >> and the 30th annual national bell ringing ceremony the tapping of the liberty bell by chubby checker. a record number of volunteers were rolling up their sleeves for 1800 service projects. at girard college, they were helping the needy and educating people on voting rights. >> dr. king was a champion of

at martin luther king, jr.'s life and legacy by photographs. and coverage of the activities around the area the ceremonies and service projects in honor of dr. king there at 6abc.com. developing tonight, abington police trying to track town three smash and grab bandits having their way at the jewelry store at the mall. what exactly happened there tonight? >> well jim, it's a crime that caught everyone off guard. people thought what they heard was the sound of gun shots. it turned out to be the sound of glass breaking. employees began to lock themselves into the store while customers went running. it was a normal day at the willow drove park mall when things took a scary turn.

>> we heard two loud noises and they screamed get down. >> and men walked into precision watches and jewelry and smashed cases. >> and they told me it sounded like gun shots but it was a large hammer smashing the glass. >> grabs as much merchandise as they could. >> and i called my manager and we hid in the back and locked the doors and everything. >> what was that like? >> probably definitely the scariest moment of my life. >> and the shoppers leaving the mall tonight could not believe what happened. >> quite shocking. it doesn't happen much in this area. and hopefully nobody was hurt. >> abington police are investigating the crime. hearing of no injuries at this point muchment police are looking for the people in connection and this scene playing out in the willow drove mall tonight.

>> thank you. the philadelphia homicide detectives are trying to sort out a deadly triple shooting. gunfire in strawberry mansion at 8:00, police called to the 1700 block of north 31st street. they found a man believed to be in his 20s shot in the head. he was pronounced dead at temple university hospital. two other victims, a 51-year-old man and 35-year-old woman are now in critical condition. a water main break shutdown part of route 1 in drexel him tonight. chopper 6 hd over the scene near the area where they tried to cap a leak. and travel on one side of the road with one lane for each direction of travel. learning more about the victim's killed in the car crashes caused by yesterday's flash freeze. close to 60 vehicles involved in a pile-up on the schuylkill expressway. 31-year-old eric blau was killed. 30 other people were hurt.

on the big red three drivers couldn't avoid a jackknifed big rig and two died. volunteer firefighter tried to care for victims until the paramedics arrived. >> with both of them for about 20 minutes trying to stabilize them and talk to them. >> were they conscious? >> they were in and out. >> and thomas michael brennan of lansdale and jason anderson did not survive. anderson was the director of ticket sales and operations at dover international speedway. this video of an icy accident on the new jersey turnpike going viral. more than 300,000 views on youtube in the past several hours. the man recorded this frightening semislide in the southbound lanes at exit 9 new brunswick. he pulled over because two tractor-trailers were blocking all of the lanes. the other big rig couldn't stop

trying to hold it together in the wake of her grandson's death saying she rose nafis o'neal since he was a boy. >> raised him up respect for other people. have respect. and it was a religious home. >> the police say o'neal a freshman at west philadelphia high school was stabbed to death friday during an altercation with another student, a 16-year-old. the investigators say it began earlier in the day when o'neal got in a fight with other students in the lunch room. the fight broke up and it appeared to be back to normal. >> it was supposed to have died down. when we got out of school after school hours, it escalated again. and they basically followed him and watching the whole time is what it sounded like to me. >> o'neal stabbed in the chest a few blocks from school and he was rushed to the hospital and later died. the police served the search warrant at the 16-year-old home on haverford ave.

and did not wake up until someone rang his doorbell. and the upper merion police happy to report an arrest in a series of thefts that had been grating on the township. investigators say two brothers of gilbertsville pilfered a total of 13 100-pound storm greats since last december. claimed stealing as much as a half million worth of greats throughout the area. nearly 1,000 from philadelphia limerick, collegeville bensalem, haverford, broomall upper province and montgomery montgomeriville. and tom wolf will become governor, taking part in the m.l.k. service projects.
