11:30 am
>> the philadelphia mayor's race suddenly seems ride open. inside story starts right now! # good sunday morning everyone, i'm matt o'donnell. it is sunday, january 25, 2015, i do not think i will get to everything i want to get to, because we have so much. let's meet our insiders of the week. g. terry madonna. rene amoore. >> nia meeks. and jan ting, temple law professor. darrell clark announced he won't mark and ken trajio drops out due to a family matter. this is a surprise because he
11:31 am
had received support from ed rendell and had a lot of money to put into a campaign. there are a lot of developments. what do you think of this? >> i thought it was fascinating the way he withdrew, saying not only am i not going to endorse the announced candidates, there's room for others in the rails. there's no progressive in the race, he is searching to bring someone else into the race. >> this is fascinating. prior to ken dropping out, when was the last time you see in philadelphia, 50% of the candidates announced major candidates being latino number one. we have not had a white male as a major candidate, in a few weeks that may change. that may offer a different complex with the city of philadelphia and showing how we're changing and involving and reflecting more of the city right now. >> it's about money.
11:32 am
remember the races are very and he expensive. how do you get into a race, the filing period comes up next month. this will come very quickly. we don't know one of the big unanswered questions, how many times did he run three? >> let's bring him in right now. sam katz is thinking of running. he did meet with darrell clark a few days ago and they discussed how the mayor and city council could work together, as you know nutter and clark don't see eye to eye on a lot of things. he e-mailed this statement. he wins the world for using hardship -- hypeicall must
11:33 am
be seriously considering stuff. >> i want him to run i like sam katz. in 1999 if the feds stayed out of it he could have been our mayor. he is smart and bold. i want him to run. >> when you've run a race and you almost won it has to make you think if i had done that differently, the mitt romeny syndrome. i think sam katz is feeling that, he has said, rene, he is not going to run again as a republican. that suggests he is going to run as a democrat. >> he could be independent. >> not democrat all the time. >> he could wait to see what happens in the democratic primary. who wins, the strength and weaknesses of that campaign this
11:34 am
summer. >> let the democrats do what they are going to do you have to have your papers in to file your nominated petition in february, that's a lot of mechanism to put together in a short period of time. when when you look we have four or so announced candidates, more serious than others, at the end of the day then we can get into the issues right after that period. most of the time after the may primary, that's pretty much when we've decided who the next mayor will be simply by registration numbers. >> 8-1. that's a serious thing to overcome. >> a couple of disclosures here are the announced candidates. lynn abraham state senator anthony williams. nelson diaz and former judge and long time panelist on inside story. and 6abc has cooperated with sam katz and his documentary
11:35 am
philadelphia the great experience. doug oliver. noelle street. >> can milton street, win? no. >> but 25% of the vote, the last time out, in a primary you get 15, 20% of the vote. you might affect the outcome. >> he will, that's what he does. >> a multiple candidate race anything can happen. what's interesting about those three announced candidates, to me, is that two-thirds of them are temple law school grads. >> all right. >> you're looking at a demographics race, look at the announced candidates and proposed coming in. we don't have anybody speaking to the new millennials that's an open did he demographic. talking to women some say lynn abraham has that locked.
11:36 am
others are not convinced. african-americans, you're looking at senator williams and the latino population and the immigrants in philadelphia one in ten is a new immigrant. we have a different dynamic in the city that the people have to think of. if kenny gets in, that will up end lynn abraham than anybody else. it depends on who gets in and how the mix shifts. >> we haven't talked built union and and the people who make a difference. >> darrell clark spoke with sam katz. >> darrell clark is the big dog at city hall. that's what that says, whoever comes in comes the next way. >> sam katz was smart. >> when darrell clark announced he was not going to run. i remember reading a philadelphia magazine article saying it's anthony williams
11:37 am
rails to lose. do we think that? >> milton street has said he will come in the race, he has all but announced. that will affect senator williams. >> he has the street cred, i don't know a former state senator and former felon. i guess thoold -- that would have a lot going for some people. i don't see him doing damage to senator williams. i don't see people new to the city saying this is the face of who i want to be mayor. we have a pope coming to the city, this is the face -- >> i think we have to be careful somebody polled in the city about not exaggerating the newness, that's a relatively small part of the electorate. >> that can move things. >> nelson diaz the only latino
11:38 am
candidate how big is that? >> there was a false narrative to say that trajio and diaz would cancel each other out. >> all puerto puerto ricans boy the way can vote, because they are united states citizens. >> say it again. >> 65% of the population latino population of this state of puerto rican. down from 90% 20 years ago to show you the unflux you all have been pointing out. >> other latino immigrants may not be citizens, and they can't vote. >> but it's going to make a difference. it's all different players. >> bob brady was instrumental with mayor nutter with him winning the job the first time. i guess i answered that
11:39 am
myself -- >> look at the carpenter union building they have big old sign saying anthony hardy williams for mayor. >> who is ed rendell going to support? >> he did have a meet and greet with trijio he is not in it. >> i think katz will enter. >> have we dispelled the rumor of ed rendell running for mayor. >> we do that every time. >> they had him against toomey for the senate race. he said he would be horrible as a senator. he wouldn't like it. >> why does he need to run for something, he is doing fine. >> i'm going to check him out trust me. >> that's the mayor's race,
11:40 am
surmised in ten minutes. >> maybe you should run. >> that would be the day, i don't live in philadelphia. he's governor tom wolf now the york businessman who never held elected office, he said during his speech you voted for a different kind of leader i'm an unconventional leader. he assumed things up nicely. jobs that pay schools that teach, a government that works i don't know anyone out there whomed -- who would be against that. the problem he is not talking about his plans the tax increase, the natural gas the budget deficit he'll face, i guess the speech vague but ineffective. >> devil is in the details. the people voted for the new governor, they have voted for the legislature, they expanded the republican majority in both
11:41 am
houses of the state legislature the big question can the governor get along with this super republican state legislature? >> it's more conservative with the new speaker and new majority leader. the fact is it was by and large typical of gubernatorial inaugurals. march 3 is d-day that's budget day. we'll get all the details. this week it's been a tale of two to himself. bipartisan tom in the speech reaching out visiting lawmakers, meeting with the republicans a couple of days without consulting senate leaders he decided to defrock the recently pointed open records head and withdrew two dozen of committee appointments to commission and boards one of
11:42 am
whom is a temple board appointment for the former lieutenant callly without informing lawmakers. >> doesn't he get to have his own law -- >> he is right in principle they should not do it. there are some odd things about some of the appointments heals right about that, but go to jan's point what's the big issue? the budget. >> shale tax. >> he has to make friends. >> has he angered republican leaders enough to make his job more difficult given the changes. we don't know. but we saw two different tom wolves this week. >> i think he is a soft-spoken enough gentleman that will get along with some republicans but not all. i do believe because he doesn't come off with the hard fist, you don't go my way people will be
11:43 am
lulled a little bit. i do thing it will be challenging come budget season. i see a lot of folks thinking he is going far left. i don't see that in his character or politics. it sounded good on the campaign trail, but he is a pragmatist. that's why he was so success. in his business. i see the needle moving somewhat claiming a lot of victory and communications coming through. >> he said he is the first governor to operate a forklift and manage the hardware store and volunteer the peace corps. >> there's a possibility that guy can get along with the republican legislature than the last governor. a republican governor is viewed as potential king maker rival troublemaker within the party. republicans seat know tom wolf is not one of us we don't have to worry about his elbows
11:44 am
bumping us around within the party. >> the republicans have made it clear before they are willing to talk about reserve flews -- revenues, these are the leaders now, he has to do pension and liquor privatization. >> corbett tried to do. >> but the republican legislature didn't adopt them. i think the shale tax maybe not 5% even the outgoing corbett administration budget secretary said we reached the wall new revenues. everybody realizes not much more can be cut. new revenues where are they. i think there's room for a compromise. i think they will get over the flap this week. the politics of it was don't do what he did. in principle else probably right. >> but again he has to focus on leadership. don't get into the mess of
11:45 am
everybody else. he started out recognizing corbett in his speech. that was a good thing. looks like he is trying to reach across. let's see what happens. >> there are a lot of unknowns how he operates as an never-elected official. >> does he know how to play the game? >> he has one of the most experienced group of cabinet secretary of state and advisers. he wants to hit the ground running. we'll see with the confirmation process, we have people on the environment side. it's not a done deal. you have to be impressed with the solid credentials of the people he has around him. we'll see how it goes. >> we'll be right back. yippee!! look a ride! (vo) made with the funnest peanuts ever!
11:46 am
skippy. yippee!!
11:47 am
11:48 am
>> kathleen kane seems to be in the clear at least for now. the state supreme court ruled that the charges cannot be brought against the pennsylvania attorney general until it rules on the confidential leak investigation. a grand jury recommended purjury charges against the democrat. kathleen kane stood here in philadelphia claiming political opponents are out to get her. does anybody think this is a turning point for kathleen kane. >> she has a lid on the current bubbling caldron. the history is one pot bubbles
11:49 am
and another pot bubbles. it's distracting from the job people are looking for her to do. >> every time i look there's another issue instead of doing it she wants to do this grunt stuff she things will make her famous. look where it has gotten. >> i am surprised with the supreme court intervention staying the hand of the montgomery district attorney from bringing charges. it seems that the judge in charge of the grand jury thought he needed help from a special prosecutor an brought him him and there's ample press dent for that having -- for this being done. i don't know what's going on but i think they will hear the case
11:50 am
in march, i would think they would let the investigation proceed. >> yous have to figure -- us have to i figure -- you have to first thing they are trying to keep the optics straight there. >> they have to overrule two previous precedents they set. we don't have a special prosecutor law expired several years ago, but this practice has been going on. i agree with nism -- nia it gives her a break from legal prosecution. every ga does their own investigation. this was going to take months anyway even if was to happen during during the course of lease is a f up rman's -- furman's current
11:51 am
tenure. >> when does wolf step into this? saying it's time. >> let the legal process play out. >> i wouldn't be surprised if he has somebody in the back pocket to consider just in case. >> jan is prepared to take that on. >> i got something in my pocket here. is it deflated? i want to give a plug to the high school huddle team here at 6abc and "action news," jeff skeverski and the gang. >> can i touch it. this is not inflated, because it's more like a plush doll. so anyway, we're going to talk about deflate gate. it's inflating like a boon for the super bowl-bound patriots. 11 because were under-inflated. the coach the quarterback said i don't know anything about this, but we demolished the colts. the nfl said it's going to
11:52 am
investigate, but then you have the spy gate thing now, you remember this, the late arlen spector called the patriots out after they beat the eagles, because they are filming the other side with video cameras. belichick got find. finned. so somebody touched the ball. >> but the cold weather can decrease. >> but it would do it for all the because. >> these are only the patriots because. >> everybody is conceding that the 11 of the 12 because were under inflated. the coach said he didn't do it, tom brady said he didn't do it. but there's no curiosity on the part of the team who did it. belichick hadn't said we'll talk to everybody we'll find out who did it. there's no curiosity about that, they are saying i didn't do it,
11:53 am
next question. >> in the nfl winning is everything and always has been, and whatever edge you might get you had a hit list on the defensive side. they started to crackdown on that. you took out that player, i don't know about that, plausible deny ability. bill belichick earned the nameful bill bell cheat. if i were a player i would want to know what happened. >> unless you won the game. >> it's a cloud though. >> what's insane about it, maybe i'm wrong the patriots would have one with this ball. on that day they were clearly the better team. >> but they didn't know that at the time the because were under inflated. >> why do that? >> because they don't care. [ speaking over each other ]
11:54 am
>> a lot of people asked barry bonds why do you think you needed to do that stuff. you were great already? >> try stupid. >> our discussion will continue at another time because we have to get your inside stories we're going to break.
11:55 am
11:56 am
>> ness stories was the week. >> reporter: tom colorso inside the grand jury, go to the legislature and get an expedges for crime and -- exemptions for
11:57 am
crime and fraud, the legislature not taking it up. >> a lot of folks have cut staff employment by ten and 15 hours making them part-time. i feel the same way but they have a new mandatory legislation that says it should be 40 hours toomey is supporting that. it's bipartisan. >> we're talking about the pennsylvania supreme court but we need to pay attention in the u.s. supreme court. williams julie versus the florida bar. judges are saying i should be able to solicit people for money just as anybody else that's happening in june. >> reporter: nobody is mentioning president obama's state of the union speech. he is a lame duck. he could have taken a compromised position with the republican congress a heightened majority for the republicans in
11:58 am
both houses of congress. he didn't. i thought he had good ideas on taxes he has taken a no compromise position, who cares. >> in the beginning of the show, i told you we wouldn't get to everything, that was on the list, state of the union speech. thanks for watching inside story, we'll see you later! i'm nydia han along with eva pilgrim. >> coming up next on "action news," a live look from sky6 live hd shows the calm before the storm looking at penns landing. meteorologist chris sowers has the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast. >> we'll have a live report on storm prep. >> a big turnout this morning in the search for a missing young mother from delaware. those stories and more next on "action news."
