ave got nd so far is a little taste. the lawns have been repainted white in places like morrisville bucks county and we have seen a snow man or two. however, a look at center city philadelphia betrays not a hint that a big one is on the way. but for many of us, it is. monday night the big story on "action news" tonight is the approach of a major snowstorm. so far this winter we've gotten away without one of these but apparently not this time. we have a quartet of reporters poised to bring us upto date. sarah bloomquist is live in cherry hill, vernon odom is in philadelphia dann cuellar standing by in atlantic city and walter perez is in seaside heights. first let's take a live look at double scan radar for the realtime status of the storm. meteorologist cecily tynan and adam joseph have the latest information from accuweather. cecily, let's start with you. >> jim the next few hours is when meteorologists are really just holding their breath as we watch that nor'easter

develop. how it develops and where it tracks will determine what we get. storm tracker 6 live double scan showing that right now we just have some snow showers some scattered snow showers really no big deal, a little bit heavier in lancaster county and we do have some snow mixing in with some rainier dover near the mouth of delaware bay and this is just from the clipper really transferring its energy to a coastal storm. wider view on storm tracker 6 live double scan show you what's going on. we've got low pressure that's developing north and east of cape hatteras. what this will do, it will bomb out which means it will rapidly intensify and roll up the eastern seaboard. i still think the bull's eye it's not here it's really new england and this is where we do have the blizzard warnings and you can see the blizzard warnings extend all the way from ocean county up through northern maine. that's about 500 miles of blizzard conditions. so, we are going to be escaping the brunt of this storm system but we will be seeing some snow and the part of the reason why it's the cold air.
6:02 pm
this one ingredient in place that will cause the storm. for more details on that let's head over to meteorologist adam joseph. >> last go around last week we were like there's no cold air for that particular storm friday night into saturday. there's plenty now and that also helps feed the nor'easters and really helps them blossom and bring up those snow totals because the snow is light it's fluffy and it can pile up a lot quicker and track will be really key. as we track that low as it deepens and rapidly intensifies off to our east, it has not already done so to the south we're not watching a shield of moisture pull up the eastern seaboard. we're wakey waiting for the storm to really kick into high gear so any shift will bring big changes to our area especially because we're on the western fringe of that storm. it definitely is going to hammer southern new england but as of right now as we go through the time line of the storm, through 10 o'clock just some light snow showers around. once the storm gets going after 10 o'clock tonight through 10 o'clock tomorrow morning, that's when the
6:03 pm
travel will be the trickiest especially east of philadelphia with periods of heavy snow. by 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning through 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon it wraps up and pulls out from southwest to northeast. expected snow totals, a huge range in our viewing area from the western suburbs of let's say chester county, berks county all of delaware 3 to 6 inches. in and around philadelphia six to 10. 10 to 14 trenton and wrapping down to atlantic city and then 14 plus up to maybe 18-inches of snow in parts of not only monmouth county but also ocean county in new jersey but jim this could shift one way or another. all depending on when that storm develops and its track and meteorologist cecily tynan will have much more on that coming up in that full accuweather forecast. >> all right, adam. let's begin our rounds robin with walter perez in seaside heights. walter, you look like you're struggling with a cold wind. ocean county could get clobbered there. >> reporter: jim, we're getting clobbered already. it is wicked windy and cold
6:04 pm
here in this part of new jersey and as adam mentioned this parter of new jersey expecting to take those blizzard conditions reaching up into new england. further west into jersey and pennsylvania more of a snowstorm. once again the big difference being that with a blizzard a lot more wind and a lot more snow. we'll give you a live look at the boardwalk here in seaside heights new jersey looking pretty desolate tonight with round two of this system moving. rows an janice lives in seaside heights all year round. she says when storms like these move in there's only so much you can do to prepare. >> i did my food shopping. did my clothes shopping and of course if the stores are opened tomorrow i may hit the stores again. >> reporter: but if the predictions are correct it's likely that no businesses will be opening their doors tomorrow in these parts. this part of the jersey shore is expecting more than a foot of snow with wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour tonight and into tomorrow. as for the folks deciding to tough out the storm they're just hoping for the best. >> hopefully the power won't go out. >> reporter: that's the key right there. >> that is the key. that's what i'm hoping is not
6:05 pm
going to happen. >> reporter: still chances are there will be power outages and plenty of them. in fact, utility companies in new jersey have already brought in power crews and outside contractors from out of state in anticipation of widespread outages. just one of the reasons why governor christie has already declared a state of emergency. >> you should stay home if you can. you should only go out in the case of an absolute emergency or necessity and the same goes for all day tomorrow. >> reporter: all right back out live once again, more than a foot of snow expected here in these parts. more snow as you go north and east into new england which is expected to take a pounding from the storm. as for right now, though, as you can see the snow has stopped for the time being but the winds are still nasty serving as a prelude of things to come. we'll stay put and have another live report coming outpatient on "action news" starting a 11:00. reporting live from seaside heights new jersey walter perez channel6 "action news." jim.
6:06 pm
>> let's go down the coast a little to atlantic city and "action news" reporter dann cuellar. dan, what are the preparations that you've been seeing today. >> reporter: well, jim mayor don guardian says it is so unpredictable what this nor'easter is going to do but they are preparing for the worst and they are urging residents to do the same. the rip currents were really picking up steam here in atlantic city as a nor'easter moved ever closer. the flags at the korean war memorial were taking a beating from high winds before they were taken down by the department of military affairs. the mayor and others were warning residents to be prepared to be snowed in. >> my suggestion to everyone. batten down the hatches, pick up food, water milk. >> getting memos out to the public to get their cars off the streets. that's what we're worrying about especially in the lowe lying areas. it's really going to be

difficult at 1:00 12:00 2:00 in the morning to move their vehicles. best to get them out of there now and be prepared. >> reporter: back out here live on the boardwalk where you can see it is virtually a ghost town. the city is offering free parking to residents at the wave parking garage at mississippi and fairmount avenues. they are expecting a 7-foot high tide around 2::this morning so things could get dicey here later tonight. we're live in atlantic city, dann cuellar, channel6 "action news." >> thank you dan. governor tom wolf has declared a state of emergency for pennsylvania which means extra resources will be available to the areas that are hardest hit. he spoke just a short time ago in harrisburg. here's what he had to say about the state snow preparation efforts. >> we have plenty of equipment, plenty of salt for what we have to do here but penndot is also ready to deploy trucks to areas of need. there will be snow on the roads. there will be big heavy equipment out there.
6:08 pm
so, be careful. if you have to drive. if you don't have to drive don't drive. >> students around the delaware valley were let out of school early today. here in elsmere delaware, parents lined up to pick up their children and get home before the heavier snow starts to fall. "action news" reporter vernon odom is live in the juniata section of philadelphia where a snow emergency took effect just a few moments ago. vernon. >> reporter: jim, it is fairly quiet at this hour here at this yard in juniata but it's been after hours of very bustling activity as the city prepared to get ready for this storm that we think is coming. hundreds of city and private company vehicles converted to snowplow trucks weren't loaded up with salt. >> we think we will know a lot more about overnight tomorrow morning in the, you know, wee hours of the morning one two 3:00 a.m. >> reporter: at midday the mayor declared a snow

emergency taking effect right now at this hour at 6:00 p.m. that means in parking for civilian vehicles on the designated streets. at this hour the parking authority will start ticketing and together all vehicles that are parked illegally on snow emergency routes. >> there will be heavy continued strict and severe enforcement on our snow emergency routes. this is serious business. >> reporter: the city's ready. vehicles from sanitation to streets to recreation and water departments have been outfitted with snowplows and loaded with salt as philadelphia prepares to take on this storm come what may. nearly 400 pieces of equipment and 800 city workers will be working overnight tonight and tomorrow to clear the streets big and small. >> by approximately 48 to 72 hours after the storm event we will go up and down every single street and make it passable. >> reporter: jim, at 6:30 mayor michael nutter is scheduled to hold another media briefing on the storm and its eventual impact on the

city. live in juniata where it is freezing vernon odom, channel6 "action news." >> all right vernon. american airlines, u.s. airways and united have all canceled flights in and out of philadelphia international airport tomorrow. airport officials say they have 500 personnel dedicated to snow removal and so they hope to get operations back to normal as soon as possible. many airlines are waiving their cancellation fees. penndot is providing an update on its efforts to keep roads clear right now. at a news conference in norristown, 538 state trucks are being deployed across the five county region. officials wants to remind drivers to be cautious of wind gusts and possible whiteout conditions and to stay off the roads if possible as conditions get worse. so, what about the roads? let's talk to matt pelman right now. matt, we know it's just wet out there now but what are the weak spots in our road network? should the weather really get bad, which we
6:11 pm
expect that it will? >> yeah, you know jim normally we say any untreated unsalted roads are going to be the really rough spots but i think tomorrow especially during those morning hours as the snow is really coming down even those are going to be treacherous. so, it's problem really is going to be tomorrow morning. this evening we're looking at mostly just wet highways like here in chester county, it was slushy earlier along the 30 bypass and now it's wet and our westbound delay has dissipated. still that slush led to a number of accidents one in caln township on business 30. that's out of the way as is the one on the pennsylvania turnpike. camera time in center city. all is fine on the vine. it's mostly dry here but as vern said don't forget if you're in the city to get your car off of the snow emergency routes now. down in delaware a number of accidents this afternoon. one still out there in ogletown along 273 eastbound at route 4 taking out the left lane. dart says they're going to run on a normal schedule tomorrow but do expect delays. patco already on a modified schedule tonight and throughout the day tomorrow. njt running with delays right now and all service will be

storm in effect. >> uh-huh. >> it's a nor'easter, it's coming up the coast and it's really hard to tell how some of our areas that are just inland are going to do. >> exactly. you know, it's a storm system that will be developing as it's moving away so no doubt it is going to be a huge storm for now. we'll just get the leftovers and parts of our western suburbs are going to say what's the big deal about this. they're really not going to get a lot of snow. storm tracker 6 live double scan showing we do have some scattered snow showers around tonight. not really amounting to much but they are coating some of the roads as the temperatures drop so you do want to be careful and you can see how trenton right now dealing with some light snow showers, new hope as well and they're beginning to move down from the north and the east and we'll see more of this as we head to the overnight hours and that nor'easter really develops. the wind chills right now it currently feels like snow. philadelphia the wind chill makes it feel like 14 trees. it's seven in allentown. it's 11 in trenton. and in millville the wind chill currently is 16 degrees.

water vapor imagery shows the storm system developing very well. this is at 6 o'clock in the morning. you'll notice this plume of moisture developing but i want to point out the trajectory you can see how it's moving up towards boston so this really has to begin to spiral down for us to get some of those bands of heavy snow and i still think the best chance of that happening will be areas farther north and east. so, future tracker showing by 11 o'clock we're beginning to see those heavier bands of snow near lakehurst. they start to move inlands around 6 o'clock in the morning. it's still snowing by 10:00 and then as we head into the afternoon hours it moves out very quickly. by 2:30, just some clouds. so expected snowfall again the far western suburbs where you usually see a lot of snow, this is not going to be a big snow events. 3 to 6 inches and i'm starting to lean to the lower snow amounts. philadelphia the immediate suburbs up across the poconos lehigh valley down to millville and wilmington, we're looking at six to 10. then towards trenton to atlantic city, 10 to 14 and then northern ocean county,

this is were you can see some blizzard conditions. you will see some heavy snow, 14 to 18-inches and new york city likely will see well more than a foot of snow. but keep in mind it's all about track. we only have 120 miles separating 3-inches to 18-inches so that track just a little bit to the east those snow amounts will be a lot lower. so, this is something i will continue to watch and i'll have new information on "action news" tonight at 11:00. coastal concerns, moderate coastal flooding tonight after midnight. wind gusts will be a huge issue, up to 45 miles per hour. winds power lines can be down and also just a light fluffy snow. it will be blowing and drifting. could reduce visibilities. the exclusive accuweather forecast tonight through tomorrow morning snow and winds, 30 degrees. behind that system it gets cold on wednesday. 29 degrees the high. thursday increasing clouds, 32 degrees. we'll have some snow showers thursday night through friday morning, 38. look at the weekend. it is going to be cold. temperatures do not even make
