city the nor'easter is very much a coastal focus storm, and the shore is battening down the hatches. this is philadelphia a international airport from sky six, a live picture, regardless of whether this storm turns out to be bad or very bad the dye has been cast as far as cancellations go tomorrow. it is monday night and the big story on "action news" tonight is the start of what will be our biggest snowstorm of the winter so far but, cecily tynan and adam joseph had made some changes to the the forecast. meanwhile, new york and points north are preparing for a crippling blizzard. within the past 45 minutes, philadelphia a mayor michael nutter a a announced that the city's public and archdiocese schools will be closed tomorrow. numerous suburban districts are also closed or delayed. we will run those along the bottom of your screen throughout our extended one hour long addition of "action news" tonight. new jersey is under a state of emergency tonight and
11:02 pm
new restrictions have been just taken effect. governor chris christie declared a travel ban for all vehicles except essential emergency personnel. the band began moments ago and will continue at least, until today break. and this is an image behind me is why. this is the winter storm from space. stretching up the eastern see board to new england. u.s. satellites from the national ocean and atmospheric administration also captured the nor'easter's development over the past three days. meteorologist cecily tynan and adam joseph are standing by with the very latest information from accu weather and we have four locations, stake out by a team of "action news" reporter. walter perez is at ground zero in seaside heights, ocean county. dann cuellar is 45 miles to the south in atlantic city where the win is expect to blow almost as hard. kenneth moton is at philadelphia emergency operations center and sharrie williams is the at the the
11:03 pm
penndot facility in norristown montgomery county. but we will begin tonight with meteorologist cecily tynan and storm tracker six live, double scan, and cecily, over the the last number of hours, you have made some changes. >> some big changes jim. at 6:00 o'clock on "action news" i was saying a shift in how you this storm will develop will create a big change in the snow forecast. that is exactly what happened. storm tracker six live double scan in the what i expected to see at 11:00 o'clock tonight. we have some showers inland but focus of the band of snow just along the coast, we have been seeing some band of some heavier snow working in through atlantic and ocean county, barnegat light harvey cedars and beach haven. we can switch this into a medicine where we will show snowfall amounts. is there a heavier band waiting off shore. this shows we have the snow falling at a maryland rate clip right along the the coast. generally at an inch an hour. that will begin to move west.
11:04 pm
the the second band that is off shore is a lot stronger, that has snow falling at a rates of 2 inches an hour. so why aren't we seeing these band of heavy snow reaching into philadelphia? the reason is not just because of this low pressure. it is because of this trough across central pennsylvania you can see snow showers there. what that does is lifting air. that creates the snow. then we have low pressure that is causing heavy snow across new england that is lifting air. what goes up, must come down. we have descending air sinking air, that is why that warms and that is right over the heart of the philadelphia area. so that is really what i call, the rip off zone that is why we have in the been seeing the accumulating snow. that being said it is still going to be a monster snowstorm for new england blizzard warnings in effect and parts of the shore and our neck of the wood. for more details on that lets head over to adam joseph. >> we have been discussing, you never trust a storm that
11:05 pm
develops close by, as it is moving to the north east because when it explodes, when it developed just to the east of over shore if it moves to the north it is taking moisture with it. you want toe this storm already taking shape and develop down in the carolinas and gulf and moving north and east. right now heaviest dust stay to the east as that low is developing off the coast line of the del marva. as that lifts to the north overnight tonight early tomorrow morning, there you can see the snow scraping our eastern shore and really hammering southern new england as it continues to slowly drift to the north and east. that continues through the early afternoon hours tomorrow with some left over snow showers, around ocean county, up through new york city. so time line here and until 1:00 in the morning snow is developing at the coast dry inland. 1:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. moderate snow east of philadelphia, that window is really closing as to how much time period we have for this storm and it tapers off late
11:06 pm
in the morning. the here's the updated snowfall expected total map wilmington far southern new jersey, all of delaware western suburbs, one to 3 inches at most with this storm. in and around philadelphia three to six but i would be very close to that lower even in philadelphia, on that range, to the north and east trenton to atlantic it i six to ten. and ten to 14 still where those blizzard warnings still see side height points north toward new york city. jim, meteorologist cecily tynan will come back and talk about a december even tuesday afternoon on tap and what is to follow in the seven day forecast. so you have heard where the worst of this storm is, let's head into the the thick of it, "action news" reporter walter perez is braving the element right now in the snowy bull's eye, see side height ocean county, you look so comfortable and relaxed, walter. >> reporter: yeah, that is me, jim, comfortable and relaxed. at this point it is bitter, jim. i have to tell you.
