story on "action news" is the winter storm that brushed the region with snow and kept thousands of students home from school today. most of the tri-state area missed the worst of it but the ripple affect is causing problems for people scheduled to fly out of philadelphia. some travellers spend the night sleeping in the airport and flights were canceled ahead of the impending storm and schools shutd down leaving kids with a day to spend outdoors. we have live team coverage with annie mccormick and nora muchanic. but we begin with david murphy at the big board with exactly what happened with this storm and conditions now. >> all right stormtracker 6 live double scan showing you most of it is over one patch near buck county and trenton, but the bulk of this is eroding and getting on out of here. we wound up with a lot less snow

than we were expecting. we had the area of low pressure that came past us on schedule you recall yesterday i was doing this sort of a graphic and the real question was where on this path will the storm intensify, if it happened later in the game it would be less snow for us and that is what happened. it was far away to dish the heavy bands from ocean county and burlington county new jersey we got decent sells in mercer county. the track wound up to the east and the farther you take these nor'easters off the coast the less chance they have of building the intense snow. we did get snow, no doubt about that. looks like the western suburb as

a coating to an inch, from delaware county to trenton and there were bullets in here that went higher but a lot of this area did go to an inch or 2 inches you had to go to trenton and beyond to get the 4 to 8 total and new york city got 8 to 12 inches around there. "good morning america" was reporting 8 inches in the city itself in central park some of the localized areas did go higher, but this is all you got in places like ocean and monmouth county. in ocean county 7 to 8 inches there were several reports verifying that. trenton 4 inches and quake lv airport. 1.9 inches and quakertown 3, philadelphia 1.2 southeast philadelphia 2.5 and depford

river as tony fletcher manned the sidewalks clearing snow. >> it's easy and fluffy not hard to push. >> or pull through, as carly's dad learned on a ride on a snow covered street. >> i got the day off from work. it didn't total up to what we expected but it snowed throughout the night snowplows swept back and forth on route 37, the overnight travel ban meant that the plows had clean sailing. >> plow drivers do their job without obstruction it makes a big difference. >> i was expecting a foot and a half the way they were saying on the news. maybe there is 6 to 8 inches out there. the travel ban was lifted at 7:00 this morning but a few folks were on the streets this morning. >> i'm a nurse and i have 130 seniors that expect a nurse and

very to go. >> everybody panics, they made it out to be a horrible thing and roads are drivable as long as you are careful. >> as you look behind me route 37 is down to the blacktop, that is pretty amazing at this point. there is not a lot of traffic and people decided to stay home and make this a snow day. >> okay nora thank you. >> philadelphia international airport is open today but most flights are already canceled. crews are working all morning to clear the runways as the airlines work to get back on track. >> "action news" reporter annie mccormick is monitoring the situation there this noon with looking at headaches that travelers have had to deal with today. >> this baggage claim looks empty but things at the airport are picking up. officials tell us they are open

and operating but don't expect to be back to normal until tomorrow afternoon. >> last night i was worried that my husband kept checking all the flight information. flyers are feeling lucky to get a flight out of philadelphia according to flight aware they canceled 8,000 flights across the country, u.s. airways and american airlines expect own a handful of arrivals tonight and a departure to tel aviv, and southwest plan a full schedule this afternoon. air canadian is taking one arrival and britishish airways just one flight. and only four people slept in the airport overnight. jessica and her sister tamrah flew in from detroit. >> horrible a way to describe the last couple of days. >> they were suppose to fly from

unprecedented travel bans in places and people in other places are starting to dig out. we go live to abc news correspondent lana zach. >> reporter: thanks rick and sara as you mentioned in philadelphia just as they are in new york, many people are asking where was the blizzard of 2015? they are not asking that question further north. millions are still affected by the storm that raged through new england, look at this photo from space and you can understand the magnitude of the storm almost half of nantucket is without power and areas in massachusetts, long island and new york are blanketed by 20 inches or more. the storm brought out some unusual images outside of boston a yeti was on the prowl and one business traveler forgot to pack his coat. >> i'm going to the office. >> you got to be kidding me.

>> here in america's biggest city everything ground to a stop bridges and highways and even the subway system closed. i caught one of the last trains last night. usually it's teeming with people and tonight it's almost empty. >> governor cuomo is not backing down to close down much of the state. >> because the roads were empty we could actually plow the roads. >> governor malloy was glad for the protective action. >> we only had 11 accidents on our highway system and only one minor injury that is spectacular. >> there is one person who is apology is getting a lot of buzz at the moment a meteorologist in new jersey, you expected us to get it right and we didn't. >> live in new york, lana zach, channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. no matter what the weather

investigators are looking for the cause of an accident on snow covered roads in buck county, the driver lost control and struck a utility pole on bryn mawr avenue it caused a fire and the driver was taken to the hospital police have not told us anything about the person's condition. people in the suburbs have to shovel out from a couple of inches of snow this morning. david henry is live in buck county now with a look at the conditions. >> reporter: they got a little bit more snow here in buck county than other areas but not enough to be disruptive. we see 3 inches of snow on the ground and if you take a look around me traffic is no problem, since school has been canceled and many people stayed home from

but not bad at all. >> snow did indeed fall overnight but in the end it didn't amount to much in center city. crews made short work of it sweeping it and shoveling it and blasting it with a torch. >> i knew it wouldn't be too bad, i knew i had to go to work. >> with many city workers told to stay home traffic was light. nurse sara had an easy walk to hahnemann hospital i feel bad for people that spent the night because they thought there would be a ton of snow. the transit system is not without hiccups, on the rail side. >> running on the saturday schedule now, i was suppose to catch the 6:38 and now it's running 6:17 right now. amtrak says they are limited service to new york but not to

is moving out. a couple of areas that we are seeing snow is the main area, right around trenton, new jersey, and boy this is really falling apart. i will call this nothing more than nuisance snow at this point. we see sunshine today a little bit earlier, down in boathouse row after the snow departed. so far no good but i have heard from reporters and twitter followers that there is sunshine pushing through and we'll see breaks in the clouds in the afternoon, 31 in philadelphia now, we are on the cool side, winds northwest at 20 miles per hour and the temperatures across the region are on or about freezing 28 degrees in allentown wind gusts are a story and that is the case when you have a coastal storm passing by and we have significant wind gusts. in places like beach haven and trenton, not enough to bring down power lines 35 miles per hour winds in mount pocono it's a hold on to your hat kind of

day. 19 is what it feels like in philadelphia right now 18 in allentown and 14 in trenton and 14 in wildwood and another reenforcing factor. satellite and radar shows you that the nor'easter is spinning away from us and the snow bands did not really make it down into philadelphia new york got hammers fairly good and connecticut and boston is where it did its worst and we had blizzard conditions at the coast. allentown no blizzard just cloudy skies and a high of 29 at the shore we have a high coming your way of 33 degrees, some sun and windy and cold and the sun is pretty much done, in philadelphia a high of 30 and we went up to 31. and i think we'll kind of sit on that for the next couple of hours. mainly cloudy and morning snow that is over now and clearing overnight tonight and 16
