americans now moving on leaving up to three feet of snow behind. it was new england that was hit particularly hard. residents now digging out from waist high snow ago laying a travel ban in massachusetts. that one has now been lifted. >> on the coast in scituate massachusetts, seawater and debris. it surged into the streets and flooded homes. >> the sheer volume of the snow. can best be shown here this time-lapse video from the back deck of a home in massachusetts. nearly three feet perhaps even more piled up over the course of several hours and now the process, you see there, the residents trying to dig out. a scene that's unfolding today over a wide swath of the northeast. abc's susan saulny leads off our coverage. >> reporter: millions in new england are waking up this morning under a paralyzing blanket of snow. up to three feet where the blizzard did its worst damage and in some areas the snow is still 235u8ing. >> in many parts of massachusetts i think you could call it in fact an historic

event. >> reporter: the blizzard pummeled boston where snowfall might shatter records today. >> we're still in the middle of a winter storm of historic proportions in the city of boston. >> reporter: some 30,000 homes and businesses in the boston cape cod area lost power including the entire island of nantucket. it suffered a whiteout with nearly 80-mile-per-hour winds. the blizzard flooded the coastal town of mash shallfield. a stretch of seawall crumbled and the ocean poured in. >> this is horrible. we walked this wall yesterday. it's gone. >> reporter: on eastern long island an army of snowplows worked to clear highways. in connecticut, snow buried cars. the big blizzard's unexpected eastward shift saved new york city and philadelphia the worst of it. in new hampshire, they even had a little fun. >> it was worth it. better than being cooped up at home shoveling. >> reporter: forecasters sailingering cold will make cleanup difficult. the white stuff might not be going anywhere soon saugs, abc news washington. the northeast's five major

airports significant digging out. >> it canceled 8,000 flights over the course of three days. 3200 of those happened sunday before the first snowflakes even fell as airlines tried to give passengers enough warning. that didn't prevent many from still finding themselves stranded at the terminals. >> it's been exhausting. it's so emotionally exhausting to be in the airport and not have anywhere to go. >> an estimated 400,000 passengers in total affected. at a cost to the airlines of $235 million. oops essentially what we're hearing from the head of the national weather service issuing a rare apology. the head lose which uccellini said he's trying to find out how the words potentially historic became attached to their forecast. it essentially shut down the city of new york over a few

minister to save her son. earlier isis posted a video showing kenji goto holding a picture of a fellow captive, a pilot from jordan. he said they'll both be killed within 24 hours if jordan doesn't hand over a female militant who's on death row. also new details about the american killed in an attack on a hotel in libya. david berry worked for a training company based in virginia. he was among the five foreigners killed in that assault on the corinthia hotel in tripoli. an isis-related group claimed responsibility but no evidence to back it up just yet. president obama is back at the white house after a trip to india and saudi arabia. the president and first lady landed overnight. while in saudi arabia the president met with the new king to discuss security issues. and mrs. obama made headlines for not wearing a head scarf as is tradition for women in saudi arabia. several men in the saudi delegation did not shake mrs. obama's hand but gave her a nod as they passed. some saudis tweeted that the first lady was being

disrespectful to their customs. we turn to arizona now, the new england patriots still talking deflate-gate whether they want to or not. this was at the super bowl media day. thousands of media members and fans got up close and personal yesterday with the patriots and seahawks players and coaches but the owner of the patriots robert kraft showed up to say his players think deflate-gate is hogwash. it will be remembered for what seahawks running back marshawn lynch said 29 times actually. >> i'm just here so i don't get fired. i'm here so i won't be fined. i'm here so i won't get fined i'm here so i won't get fined. i'm just here so i won't get fined. >> he said that 29 times. that was the answer to every single question he got. he's required to be there for five minutes to make himself available or facing a $500,000 fine. he's been fined about $100,000 this past season alone for not speaking to the media. >> he should get his own reality

off in another car. they were not originals from the gold rush as the thieves may have thought. they're worth about $13,000. and caught on dash cam, a stolen police car, a 27-year-old suspect who police handcuffed placed in the backseat of a police cruiser outside pittsburgh managed to jump into the front seat turn on the siren and sped away while still handcuffed. she led police on a nearly ten-mile chase hitting speeds of up to 80 miles per hour before she was caught. amazingly, no one was hurt. >> still impressive, if you will. >> impressive? >> able to do -- now, this would have never happened to her. this other burglar in england had to learn the hard way crime didn't play. somehow ended up dangling from the window upside down. two college students happened upon this guy. they couldn't stop laughing. theburg burglar was in tears. he was up there for five hours.
