for a potential measles outbreak. officials here at the super bowl are on guard this morning determined to keep the fans safe and the measles out. overnight new york officials confirmed a barred college student who has tested positive for measles was contagious on sunday when he boarded an amtrak train to albany from new york city's penn station possibly exposing hundreds of thousands of travelers in north america's busiest transportation center. >> my main concern with my daughter is that, you know, we take her to a mcdonald's and she comes back with the measles. >> reporter: in arizona, officials are monitoring 200 patients of a pediatric clinic for possible exposure. an infected woman visited the office outside of phoenix just days before an estimated million visitors from around the country flooded the city for sunday's super bowl. an infected person can spread the disease for days before its first visible simms appear. the virus lives on surfaces and

in the air for up to two hours meaning even after a sick person left the room anyone without immunity could still be infected leading some doctors to blame this outbreak on so-called anti-vaccers, parents who refuse to have their children vaccinated fearing unproven side effects. >> we should be fully informed with what exactly is in each and every injection that goes into our child's body. >> reporter: in the epicenter of this outbreak one california health care company robo calling those parents with an urgent reminder. >> measles is a highly contagious infection that can have serious complications. >> reporter: as schools warn their children to stay home some pediatricians refusing to allow the families in their offices at all. >> they're not welcome unless they decide to immunize. those patients have a right to their opinion but they just don't have a right to possibly infect my other patients who are vulnerable in my office. >> reporter: it only takes a cough or a sneeze, even a touch from an infected person can linger for hours. they'll definitely be packing their hand wipes and purel here

at the super bowl. paula. >> just so contagious. neal karlinsky from the super bowl this morning. and we do want to bring in abc's dr. richard besser. good morning, rich and, first of all, can you remind us how contagious measles is and what it means for this latest indent on the amtrak train. >> this is one of the most contagious viruses we know of. if you haven't been vaccinated if you haven't had the disease and you're exposed there's a 90% chance you'll get it. a train car is where you have to be very concerned because people are in there, it's a very confined space. what the health department is saying on that train and were not vaccinated if you get a fever you need to check in with your doctor because you may have measles. >> you see over this year the flu season hasn't been very effective. not the case for the measles vaccination. >> the good news is, this is one of the best vaccines we have. it reduces your chances of getting measles if you're exposed from 90% all the way down to 1%. that's really incredible. a very effective vaccine. >> i know my 1-year-old is due for his mmr. that mmr, measles, mumps, rubella. it's not just a one-time

the way to the northeast where millions are digging out from that record-setting blizzard. abc's gio benitez is in boston with more. gio, good morning to you. >> reporter: oh, good morning, dan. it is cold. just take a look behind me. it is snowing, it is windy and, you know what, we are talking about temperatures feeling like 7 below zero where we're standing right now here in boston. these incredible gusts of wind at 40 miles per hour. it's going to be cold for quite some time. this morning, just as coastal massachusetts cleans up from a record-breaking blizzard, the watches are out, more snow is on the way. while the last blizzard's impact is still felt across the northeast, two men in massachusetts died while shoveling the two feet of snow left behind. those unable to shovel, getting help in providence, rhode island, from volunteers. you can still see so much ice on this house. >> absolutely. >> reporter: homes in scituate looking more like igloos, water pounding the coast and homes

before freezing over. so this just tore up your deck here. >> absolutely and that's held down with inch and three-quarter screws, so i mean the force of something to be ripped out is just unbelievable. >> reporter: damage he won't even think about repairing until after winter. and the ice on those homes is not going to be melting any time soon. the snow here in boston also not going to be melting any time soon. these temperatures are going to be cold, cold, cold for several days, paula. >> they're bracing for more, all right, gio benitez, thank you. and rob is tracking the wintry blast and this big storm that's on its way. good morning, rob. >> good morning, paula. this one is bigger and will affect more people than the last storm did from a wide swath of real estate all the way from new england where we have winter storm watches as gio mentioned where the storm is expected to go but it's going to hit the midwest first and we already have winter storm warnings that stretch back in through iowa. it has a lot of moisture and tapped into tropical moisture

and it's been raining across parts of arizona, snow across the southern rockies. it gets into chicago tomorrow morning. we'll see some snow potentially heavy at times. the biggest snowfall in chicago easily this year and super bowl sunday, northeast and by halftime 9 p.m. sunday we look for that to encroach on the new york city area. here's what we're thinking as far as the snowfall amounts at this time, 6 to 12 inches, yeah, potential from across northern illinois, northern indiana including chicago and then stretching across parts of northern ohio in through pittsburgh and then watch this whole swath goes just across upstate new york right on the fringe of the 6 to 12. i think the northeast we'll have to tweak this forecast a little tomorrow. a little bit of uncertainty there. but has some moisture with it and the cold air, as well. a fair amount of snow. we'll continue to update you, dan, back to you. >> busy days for the abc news weather team. rob, thank you. we will continue to track it. we are seeing remarkable new video of a coast guard rescue. not only did this mission entail high risks on the high seas, but it also involved the family of

one of the original investors in pinterest on board a luxury boat that experienced a sudden and dramatic malfunction and abc's kendis gibson is here with more. good morning. >> good morning, dan and paula, good morning, everybody. this ordeal, a harrowing one for a group of five people in the atlantic ocean. their boat battering 13-foot waves and 40-mile-an-hour winds and the coast guard doing what they do best. overnight the u.s. coast guard releasing this video of a dramatic rescue at sea. five people plucked from an incapacitated sailboat friday 200 miles off the coast of north carolina. watch as the crew is hoisted one by one into a rescue helicopter hovering above. here you can see one crew member jump from the disabled boat into the churning water to reach the rescuer. >> there was 40-knot winds and 13-foot seas and they took a wave over the bow that split in half. >> reporter: this morning the coast guard telling abc news the rescue was launched

when the crew of the vessel issued a distress call just before 2:00 p.m. >> so welcome to my wonderful gun boat. >> reporter: aboard the boat millionaire pinterest investor brian cohen. his $2.5 million luxury catamaran, "the rainmaker" profiled by "forbes" last year. >> the boat design is all 100% carbon fiber. what does that mean? it means that it's light and it's strong and rigid so that when you actually are out sailing, you've got authority in the water. >> reporter: but now cohen and the rest of his crew thankful to be back on dry land after the frightening ordeal. by the way, the maker of that catamaran, gunboat, tells abc news they plan on getting the boat back and repairing it so cohen can go back out on to the water as soon as possible. so a day they won't ever forget and for the coast guard, friday. >> exactly. >> interesting that he'd be willing to go back out on the water. >> absolutely. it's a beautiful boat and they're going to repair it. >> kendis, thank you, appreciate

it. now a stunning new twist in the vanderbilt rape trial. and what it could mean to the guilty verdict. two former college football players were convicted this week of sexual assault, but can new information about a juror lead to that verdict being thrown out? abc's ryan smith here with what could be happen next and good morning, ryan. >> good morning, paula. just days after the conviction a juror's past could come back to haunt the verdict with the defense claiming it goes to the heart of this trial. this as jurors speak to us about those cell phone videos that helped crack the case. this morning attorneys for one of the two men convicted in the vanderbilt university rape case fighting to overturn that verdict. the defense team for former football player brandon vandenburg revealing plans to file a motion to vacate the guilty verdict after discovering one of the jurors did not disclose he or she was a sexual assault victim 15 years ago. >> to not disclose that you were the victim of a sex crime in a case where it's about a sex

crime is not a frivolous motion on the part of the defense. >> reporter: in a statement to abc news, the attorney for the jurors said the past situation has zero similarity to the facts presented nor did the past situation have any impact upon deliberation or decision-making in this case." the conflict revealed just days after vandenburg along with teammate cory batey were convicted on four counts of aggravated rape and two counts of sexual battery. >> we the jury find the defendant cory lamont batey guilty. >> reporter: the two men seen in this footage accused of bringing an unconscious victim to vandenburg's room after a night of heavy drifting in 2013 where she was sexually assaulted. the jury's decision coming after just three hours of deliberation thanks in part to a damning cell phone video. tell me what your feelings were when they played that video for you. >> horrified and utterly disgusted. >> i asked myself how could they do this to this young lady?

>> reporter: jurors telling us during jury selection attorneys asked if they were prepared for the graphic nature of this crime. >> they mentioned, you know, this is a rape trial. there will be graphic images and graphic statements and, you know, can you handle that? >> reporter: as it stands now vandenburg and batey will be sentenced march 6th and face decades in prison. the other two men involved are still awaiting trial. paula and dan. >> many more developments to come. ryan, thank you. a lot of other news overnight, and, as always, we turn to ron claiborne for a look at the morning headlines. good morning, sir. >> good morning to you, dan and paula, saar r good morning, everyone. we begin with a hostage crisis involving a jordanian air force pilot and japanese journalist both held captive by isis militants. japanese officials are saying the negotiations with isis for the journalist's release have now become deadlocked. isis has demanded that a female prisoner held in jordan be let go in exchange for freeing that japanese reporter and sparing the life of the pilot but jordan wants proof the pilot is still alive before

agreeing to any deal and so far no proof from isis. and outrage on the campus of the university of virginia after sorority members are banned from attending this weekend's big frat parties, the sorority members have been told by the national sorority leadership to stay home tonight while the male fraternities party on. some coeds are calling the unprecedented ban havana sexist and say it undermines their ability to make good decisions. the ban comes after a discredited "rolling stone" magazine story about a rape on that campus. it is now official republican mitt romney is skipping the 2016 presidential race. 2012 gop nominee says he will not launch a third bid for the white house. romney said that he wants to give other republicans a shot next year. romney's exit is widely considered a boost for former florida governor for jeb bush who is expected to run. now to the aaron hernandez murder trial. jurors given some unusual instructions ahead of sunday's super bowl. the judge told the jury that they can watch hernandez's former team, the new england patriots, take on the seattle

seahawks but warned them if they ever hear hernandez's name mentioned on the tv broadcast or by people watching the game with them to leave the room. as for hernandez, he won't be able to watch the big game. he's in solitary confinement which means no television. and florida police are on the hunt for a brazen team of armed thieves caught on camera bursting through the ceilings of check cashing stores and robbing clerks at gunpoint. the suspects dangled from above and then dropped down into the stores. investigators have -- >> sneaky. >> how about that? investigators say the two alleged bandits are responsible for a string of three robberies dating back to september. and finally we have breaking dog news. the beverly hills pooch with lots of celebrity fans who was snatched in broad daylight is back home this morning. >> yay. >> good news. >> barking news. >> that's barking/breaking news. his name is charlie, of course. the dognapping caught on camera. you see charlie walking down the street there followed by a man and a child and seconds later

>> reporter: los angeles police claiming knight deliberately ran over two men in this parking lot thursday killing his business associate terry carter. this tmz video showing first responders trying to save him. >> people we talked to said it looked like it was an intentional act. >> reporter: but knight's attorney speaking exclusively to abc news insist it was a tragic accident as knight was fleeing an attack. >> when you're being grabbed and beaten and you're at the steering wheel, it's not so easy driving a vehicle as you're trying to escape. >> reporter: witnesses say knight was also involved in a confrontation on a nearby set for the nwa film "straight out of compton." ♪ straight out of compton ♪ >> reporter: named for the rap group's hit song. it's not knight's first violent run-in. gangster rap icon was shot at a party last year and spent time in prison convicted of assault and armed robbery. he was once considered a person of interest by a former detective in the circumstances surrounding tupac shakur's 1996
