storm moving away with a mix of rain in atlantic city and surf city. as you head to the north there was a quick burst of snow on the backside of the storm heading from wrightstown and browns mills about a half hour ago. quickly now moving off to the east but near lakehurst seaside heights up to belmar a quick inch of snow has fallen as it's transitioned back over but pretty soon that will be off the coast and generally we are drying out to the west. because of the excess moisture, most of the highways and major roads have dried out. it's really the sidewalks it's the parking lots, it's your driveways and your walkways that there could be a flash freeze this evening and more than likely will and that's why the national weather service has issued a winter weather advisory through midnight because of the quick dropping temperatures and a lot of slush around. that is going to turn rock hard very quickly here this evening. in fact right now we've jumped up to 41 degrees in philadelphia, 40 wilmington and millville. we're down 28 in allentown, 15 in the poconos and as that

cold air floods in watch what happens just two and a half hours from now. we're down to 15 in allentown 19 in lancaster, 24 in philadelphia, seven in the poconos, so as we go through this evening we're looking at a 10-degree drop in temperature in a matter of two hours. so, if there's any untreated surfaces they will freeze back over and especially again your driveways and sidewalks if you have slush, get it off if you can in the next hour or two and if it does look wet it probably more than likely is icy if you haven't salted it. when i come back we'll talk about another chance of some snow squalls coming in before the end of the week in that full accuweather forecast. brian, it is not over just yet. >> not yet adam. thanks very much. the dropping temperatures and slick conditions have crews on the move treating the roads today. we're especially keeping an eye on some of the areas that saw the heaviest snow totals overnight into this morning, that includes allentown and that is where walter perez continues our live team coverage today.

hey walter. >> reporter: hey brian. we'll give you a live look right now at conditions right away. this is north 15th street in allentown. this road surface was completely clear 15 minutes ago and then i we got a quick blast of sleet, still sleeting lightly at this point and it's been like that all day raw wet and nasty. there was plenty of slush in the lehigh valley during the morning rush. >> not like it, it's cold, it's wet it's just yucky. i don't like it. >> reporter: snow turned to rain the temperature went above freezing and most of that slush has gone away. now, though, more precip is on the way coupled with a deep freeze tonight. penndot spokesperson ron young says that always poses a challenge for road crews. >> we'll do our best to keep things wet and keep things from freezing up but when you get extreme cold temperatures like that, even salt isn't very effective and we splay to shift to putting down antiskid material which is a gravel and sand mix that provides traction in cases of extreme cold temperatures.

>> reporter: for now though, the roads are in good condition for the evening commute. certainly a far cry from the brutal conditions we were contending with this time last year. a situation so bad some people apparently blotted it from their memory. >> i think it's not -- i think it's colder last year. i don't know. i think it was just as much snow reporter: no, last year was 10 times as much snow. >> i don't live around here so, you know, i get it a little deeper where i'm at. >> reporter: most others say they remember last winter quite well. >> last year just steady miserable days and cold and cold and snow. not too bad this year. no reason we'll to complain. >> reporter: all right, back out live on the scene here, in the peace i said the roads in good condition. let me downgrade that slight to fair condition depending on where you are and be mindful of just how cold it's going to get tonight if you're out and about whether you're walking or driving, just please be

careful. reporting live from allentown t-walter perez, channel6 "action news." >> all right, walter with a much needed reality check. thank you. as temperatures drop be sure to stick with 6abc.com/weather. there we have the hourly and seven-day forecasts so you can be prepared no matter how cold it might get. >> it was a stunning murder that happened in that broad daylight in the middle of the street. a woman was gunned down while she waited for the bus to take her to work. today police say they've caught the man who did it and they say they finally know why. vernon odom is live at police headquarters with more on this investigation. vern. >> reporter: good evening. the suspect remains in a jail. he's been hit with first degree murder charges. police say he confessed to the crime that shocked the city and baffled the police at least for awhile. >> just stunned just stunned. >> reporter: this is randolph sanders talking exclusively to "action news" the day after the murder of his coworker kim jones who was shot and killed on

january 13th near her north philadelphia home as she waited for a bus to go to work. weeks later the 36-year-old sanders is charged with her murder. >> mr. sanders was brought into the homicide unit on saturday for questioning and gave a full confession on committing this premeditated and senseless murder. >> reporter: police say sanders killed jones because she was going to expose his alleged theft of some $40 from the social services agency where she was his supervisor. police say it was sanders seen here sneaking up on jones at the 12th and jefferson bus stop. the ski masked man killed her with a single shot to the head. the killer was seen making his get away near temple university onto the broad street subway. his identity still shielded. detectives went through 100 hours of video before they saw the suspect get into a suv and drive away. police eventually realized sanders drove that same type of vehicle. >> on the morning of her murder she was going to report him to dhs which actually

funds this nonprofit organization so he waited for her to come out the house laid in wait and then he ambushed her. >> reporter: a brief statement from the turning point ceo where some coworkers eventually told police they did notice tension between jones and sanders. >> we were both shocked and saddened by this news. right now our primary concern is the well being of the entire turning points for children staff. >> reporter: investigation into that allegedly stolen money has been turned over to the philadelphia district attorney's office but randolph sanders is facing charges of murder in the first degree. at police headquarters in center city, vernon odom, channel6 "action news." >> all right, thank you vernon. a camden county man accused of killing his roommate over the weekend was formally arraigned on murder charges today. 50-year-old william clark the third is accused of shooting 51-year-old steven johnson on s. it happened inside the apartment along the 400 block

of south white horse pike in audubon. authorities have not released information on the motive for the shooting. clark is being held on a half million dollars bail. new jersey governor chris christie raised some eyebrows on his trip to the united kingdom today. he says parents should have some choice on whether to vaccinate their children. now christie made the comments after touring a biomedical research center in england that actually makes vaccines. he said he and his wife vaccinated their own children but he also said that parents should have a choice as well. >> but i also understand that parents need to have some measure of choice in things as well so that's the balance that the government has to decide but i can just tell people from our perspective mary pat and i have had our children vaccinated. >> reporter: christie says not all vaccines are created equal and the decision on vaccination can differ by disease. after those comments his team sent out a statement clarifying his position. it says christie believes quote vaccines are an important public health protection and in the case of measles there is no question

>> ♪♪ >> another winter storm is slamming new england today and it's hitting the same people still digging out from the snow that fell this time last week. part of massachusetts and connecticut are getting hammered again and could see as much as a foot of snow. they got more than 2 feet in some places last week. boston's mayor has declared a

snow emergency in the city. >> so, we are out there with plows today. we're asking people if you can to stay off the roads, try and take public transportation as best you can and allow us the opportunity to clean the streets. >> meanwhile the midwest is also dealing with heavy snow and gusty winds. tens of thousands of people have no power. the weather has also caused dozens of accidents and it's causing problems at airports with more than 2300 flights already canceled. >> president obama is talking about his $4 trillion budget proposal today and drawing a clear line in the sand. the president discussed the details of the spending plan in a visit to the homeland security department but in message aimed squarely at republicans he said he would not accept a budget that boosts national security at the expense of domestic programs for the middle class. republicans are already blasting the plan which increases taxes on wealthier americans and corporations. >> to business now and stocks got a jump start to the week. the dow was up 196 points. the nasdaq rose 41 and a half.

the s & gained 26 points on the day. more than 4,000 people have filed claims against general motors over faulty ignition switches. saturday was the last day for anyone to file a claim against gm over this issue. the person evaluating the claims says 125 of them have already been ruled eligible for compensation. another 400 were turned down. gm recalled 2.6 million vehicles over the problem. >> as we mentioned temperatures are dropping. that's going to make for a rough evening commute tonight so let's get a check of the "action news" traffic report. >> very slippery out there. let's go live to matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center. >> we definitely expect that as the evening progresses. for now it could be worse. volume is lighter than normal and we'll take it as we look at the speeds on 95. northbound side, slowing by the betsy ross bridge, 23 miles per hour but normally at this point we would be in the single digits there. we did have a crash on the westbound side of the vine approaching the schuylkill expressway. they got it pushed off to the

side here on the ramp from the westbound vine to the westbound schuylkill but you can see police remain on the scene and a lot of people funneling into that left lane like they would have to do anyway with the merge there but trying to stay away from that accident. on the schuylkill itself travel times almost right on time. also on the schuylkill volume is not terrible this afternoon. had a crash in limerick that just cleared along mine run road there are a collection of them in burlington county this afternoon. one here by the red line circle at 206 and 70 involves a vehicle into a pole. also one in woodland township in the woods along 72 between chatsworth road and glass works road and in bass river township watch out for a wreck along route nine and maple avenue by allen's clam bar. let's grab the ipad do the commuter report on this monday afternoon. hope you had a good weekend. down in bear delaware one of oh so many potholes along the region along bear corbett road. we'll check it again and watch those temperatures of course brian and shirleen in the next half hour. >> matt thanks so much.

lansdale. they're very light but as they're falling they can just sugar coat the ground and that's just fluff to create -- enough to create slick travel. honeybrook, you can see a good amount of blacktop, maybe a little bit of slush on there. so, if you have any surface that has slush on it, if you can't get it off in the next hour or so, that slush is going to be rock hard in the next couple of hours and it's going to be hard to remove the next few days. in fact, those winds are starting to funnel in out of the northwest, 31 miles an hour in wilmington. 26 in reading and allentown 18 in philadelphia. and mount pocono right now the wind at 22 and those winds will continue to increase this evening. in fact a wind advisory will be in effect until midnight with winds gusting to near 45 miles an hour from philadelphia all points in southern new jersey and delaware and even the western suburbs of lancaster and chester in delaware counties. as we look at the wind chills we're already down to 11 in allentown, 17 philadelphia. still in the 30's to the south

but mount pocono that wind chill just 6 degrees in the last hour. most of the moisture is pushing away. that's the good news. and the winds will help dry the ground some, but anything that is wet and not treated will turn icy as those temperatures drop as that fresh arctic high comes in from the west and the north this evening and overnight and that will drop wind chill factors by tomorrow morning zero in allentown, seven in wilmington, seven in philadelphia, one in lancaster and 13 degrees below zero in the poconos where they picked up close to a foot of snow overnight and future tracker 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon not much better. the winds will ease some, it will stay breezy and it will feel like the 20's generally across the area. as we look at your four day at 4:00 it's brisk cold but it's sunny tomorrow with a high temperature of 28 and then a nice recovery trying to approach the upper 40's here on wednesday ahead of the next arctic boundary and with that arctic front early on thursday a chance of some snow.

not a lot as it's looking right now but it could be bad timing for the morning rush on thursday with maybe a 1 to 2-inch band of snow passing through and that will drop temperatures again for the end of the week. friday sunny and cold with a high of just 26 degrees. so, we're getting these kind of bouts of arctic air but they don't last long. they last about one day and then they move on since we've been in such a progressive pattern so that's one good thing. >> a nuisance pattern. >> all right. >> thanks. they broke out ponytail holders and scissors for an event in montgomery county. an excited bunch packed the pine school gymnasium for the locks of love event. participants are donating at least 10-inches of hair, even a teacher got in on the fun. the hair will go toward custom wigs and hairpieces for disadvantaged children who have hair loss as a result of a medical condition. it's great. >> little girls are so attached to their hair so to

this hamilton township road. those white circles mark the spot where this car struck a 63-year-old man then kept going. leaving him bleed and battered in the street. new jersey correspondent nora muchanic talks to people who tried to help the victim. she's live at the scene with more. nora. >> reporter: shirleen, it happened just moments before the start of the super bowl last night right here in the street behind me and now police are looking for the driver of a small sedan they say hit the man and they are asking for the public's help. >> i was in getting preparing for the super bowl and you hear this big thump and then i'm like wait a minute, that doesn't sound right so i come outside and he's laying out in the street. >> reporter: she's one of several neighbors who called 911 sunday evening after a hit and run accident near victor nav front of gregory liquors. police say 63-year-old donald

brosak was crossing the street when he was hit by this light colored sedan seen at the bottom of your screen. the entire thing was caught on tape by surveillance cameras. >> he's struck on the passenger side. he goes airborne, you know, strikes the windshield and then looks like he got -- he rolls off the car. >> reporter: police say immediately after the impact the driver of the car drove up 50 to 75 feet beyond the scene and parked for second, didn't get out of the vehicle and then took off. >> i know my daughters they had to stop traffic because people wouldn't have seen this guy laying in the street. >> reporter: brosak suffered a compound leg fracture a broken arm and facial injuries. he remains hospitalized in stable condition. >> if someone notices the damage to the vehicle. >> reporter: as they examined surveillance tapes police are asking car repair shops and everyone else to be on the lookout for this vehicle with possible passenger side hood and windshield damage. people here say they are disgusted by someone who would leave an injured man in the middle of the road.

>> people hitting and not taking their responsibility and they leaving the scene. >> reporter: back live on east state street where the hit and run took place the victim's family declined to comment today but again police are asking anyone with information about this hit and run to contact themed pool. live in hamilton township, i'm nora muchanic channel6 "action news." >> nora thank you. a puerto rican teenager could spend up to 80 years behind bars for trying to rape and murder a lehigh university student. 17-year-old brian sanches osorio pleaded guilty to several charges including attempted murder today. the teen tried to sexually assault the young woman then choked her until she turned blue. he had been hospitalized in puerto rico for aggressive behavioral he'll be sentenced in march pending a psychological evaluation.

19-year-old timothy brooks was sentenced up to 23 months in state prison for his role in a main line drug ring. authorities say brooks was the second in command in the main line takeover project which sold marijuana to students at universities and prep schools. brooks pleaded guilty back in october. he'll also serve five years probation. >> philadelphia police are asking for your help finding a very impatient robbery suspect. this is surveillance video from the red sun food mart on the 2200 block of 12th street back on january 17th. you see the suspect pretend to buy something then slip behind the counter. when the clerk takes too long to open the register, the man pushes her away and grabs the whole thing. once outside the suspect is seen smashing the machine opened. if you recognize him call philadelphia police. >> as we have been telling you, a mix of snow, rain and sleet made for a messy morning on the roadways particularly in the lehigh valley. check out the scene in upper milford township after a tractor-trailer jackknifed on the snowy pennsylvania

turnpike. ly it happened along the northeast extension between the quakertown and lehigh valley interchanges just after 3:30. the crash closed 12 miles of the turnpike for hours today. fortunately the driver walked owe walked -- walked away from this unharmed. >> meteorologist adam joseph is tracking this messy day. >> it's been a nuisance storm. we've had a lot of slush less than an inch of snow in philadelphia. only 2-inches of snow in allentown. it's not been a lot but enough that it's creating tricky travel at times. as we take a look at temperatures, that's the big deal this evening. we're warm right now in philadelphia, it's 41 degrees but look to the north boston 10 burlington two below zero. you factor in the wind that is wrapping around that deepening storm near boston, boston near whiteout conditions with a seven below wind chill factor, 20 below in burlington, down freezing in philadelphia and syracuse 17 degrees below zero so we're watching nor flash freeze here this evening.

>> meteorologist adam joseph we woke up to a mess this morning, some snow, some rain sleet and it's going to be a messy evening. >> pretty much everything. we have a couple snow showers passing through the region but the dropping temperatures that we're really tracking are going to plummet pretty quickly. as we look at double scan live radar we have a couple of snow showers through parts of chester county, lancaster county, reading but there is a batch just to the south and east of trenton over into new jersey now passing just to the south of florence and bristol. you see some purple starting to pop up here near 206 moving over columbus along 206 approaching mount holly and as you can see it's bumping into warmer air turning into sleet

than snow. as it passes through it could quickly sugar coat the ground and that will add more moisture for those temperatures to really start to freeze things over here this evening. in fact, we're already down to 25 degrees in allentown it's 41 in philadelphia, below freezing in reading, 12 in the poconos. and still sitting at officer just above 40 for millville down to dover and just shy of 40 degrees along the shore communities. the winds starting to drive out of the west-northwest. 32 is the wind chill right now in philadelphia. it's dropped to eight in allentown, feeling like two below in mount pocono, 33 in dover and 17 in lancaster. now, most of the major highways and major roads sad chances to somewhat dry out because they were heavily salted and they're so heavily traveled that those aren't the roads we're really worried about tonight, it's the secondary roads and the sidewalks, the driveways the walkways that still have that slush on them. those are the ones that are a little more let's just say

susceptible to seeing that freeze-up. high pressure coming in from the west and that's pushing the system out. we'll clear the skies overnighter tonight and that high tomorrow will be right to our south so we'll have a breeze coming in out of the west-southwest. it's going to be very sunny tomorrow. wind chills near 20 all day so it's a cold day with a high of 28 and as we approach the next arctic boundary on wednesday ahead of it we jump those temperatures up to 46 degrees so this arctic air that's pushing in won't last long but then there's a secondary arctic outbreak for the end of the week that cold front. tonight we'll watch for that flash freeze. again, it's any standing water or slush that is still out there. wind chills dropping five below to five above with air temperatures eight to 16 degrees. and on the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, it's dry but cold tomorrow at 28. it's dry on wednesday a nice recovery of 46 so that's when you can loosen up some of what will be rock solid slush here on wednesday afternoon and then thursday a chance for snow and the best opportunity

meteorologist cecily tynan at the "action news" big board. >> hi, monica and rick. storm tracker 6 live double scan showing that the storm system has moved out. we still have some lingering snow showers especially across burlington county right now but the problem isn't what's falling if the sky. the problem is the falling temperatures. all brought in by these very strong wind gusts. wind gusts in philadelphia currently 41 miles per hour. winds are whipping 41 in reading, 39 miles an hour wind gusts in allentown, 39 in wilmington and with the winds out of the northwest this will be pulling down some very cold air. so the national weather service has posted a winter weather advisory until midnight for the potential for flash freeze. what this means is that any roads that are wet untreated or that aren't blown dry the slush will be freezing very quickly as temperatures really nose dive. right now philadelphia 36 degrees, we're above freezing. wilmington dropped down to 33 but you'll notice allentown red andying and
