growing measles outbreak. people sick in at least 14 states. >> this morning it's become a political issue with high-profile republicans questioning the need for vaccinations. elizabeth hur joins us with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. as you know health officials are adamant. this is a matter of public safety and vaccinations work. but with some parents still on the fence some politicians are now weighing in causing quite a stir. more than 100 people in 14 states and mexico have now contracted the measles prompting doctors and even president obama to sound the alarm urging parents to vaccinate their children. but this morning, politicians chimeing in are creating a controversy. chris christie saying vaccination is a parent's choice and fellow republican prospect kentucky senator rand paul agreeing noting that vaccines should be voluntary and even linking them to mental disorders. >> i've heard of many tragic

cases of walking, talking, normal children who wound up with profound mental disorders after vaccines. >> christie said there is no question kids should be vaccinated. paul's staff saying vaccines have saved lives. >> the more kids not vaccinated the more they're at risk and the more they put their neighbors' kids at risk as well. >> reporter: while health experts continue to stress vaccinations indeed save lives hillary clinton adding her two cents taking an obvious dig at the gop hopefuls tweeting "the science is clear, the earth is round, the sky is blue and vaccines work. let's protect all our kids. #grandmothersknowbest. >> did you know to enroll in school all states require children to get certain vaccinations but some states do allow parents to opt out by

obtaining a waiver so that option for a parent still there in some states. t.j. reena, back to you. >> okay elizabeth hur, thanks so much. we turn to the weather. that brutal blast of arctic air, well it's moving in following that nasty winter storm that buried much of the midwest and northeast leaving seven dead. >> those plunges temperatures are refreezing and shutting down schools in detroit and boston for a second straight day. blossom boston digging out. back-to-back storms making it the snowiest week on record. clearing the way for their super bowl championship the patriots forced to postpone their victory parade until tomorrow. rob marciano got a firsthand look at the massachusetts coast, took yet another pounding. >> this is a navigational buoy. it weighs over 14,000 pounds. it's supposed to be a half mile off shore but the storms have been so violent this week, it

ripped it right off its mooring. >> reporter: in new york the bad weather triggered a manhole explosion that injured two people on a brooklyn street. the blast caused by road salt melting snow and ice seeping into the underground system. and icy tracks may be to blame for leaving hundreds of commuters stranded on a busy subway line for more than two hours. digging out turned deadly near chicago as three people suffered heart attacks while shoveling snow. and many travelers are finally making it home after a nightmare at the airports. more than 6,000 flights canceled since the start of the storm. well millions of people are trying to navigate dangerously slick roads as they head out. >> for more on what they can expect let's turn to steph davis. hello, steph. >> the storm is finally over across much of the northeast. high pressure building in for our tuesday allowing conditions to improve. dry weather with plenty of sunshine but we'll have a cold

and time to make some investments. it includes new taxes on corporations and the wealthy while adding tax credits for the middle class and new spending to upgrade transportation and education. but it's just an opening bid in negotiations with the republican congress. nearly 200 passenger as board a cruise ship got sick at sea with the norovirus. the royal caribbean grandeur of the seas returned a day early to baltimore. the cruise ship says most were treated on board, but it was because another passenger had a medical emergency and that's why it was forced to return. a bizarre sight in atlanta. a major highway completely deserted shut down just before the evening rush. police say they got word that you see it there a tube-shaped object was attached toen aoverpass on what's called the downtown connector. the bomb squad detonated the object but it backed up traffic for miles. monica lewinsky ended ten years of silence about her affair with bill clinton in a

oh it had to happen. gas prices are starting to inch up according to aaa. the average is 2.06 but still down nearly a dollar and a quarter from one year ago. analysts point out that this is the time of year when oil refineries shut down operations for routine maintenance which can limit output. a megamerger of office supply chains could be in the works. "the wall street journal" reports staples and office depot are in advanced talks to combine -- depot --

he's getting much-needed help. david luallen has the story. >> i've always been known to show up. >> reporter: it provided an unexpected day off of work for james robertson, one less day the 56-year-old will have to walk the more than 20 miles part of his daily commute from his home in detroit to his factory job with an industrial manufacturing company in rochester, hills. for the past decade through the snow and everything else he's made the demanding journey that takes him hours. >> i was told once that in order to get something you got to go through something. this is what i'm going through, you know. but i do go through it with a smile on my face. >> reporter: blake pollack works in finance. he has befriended james giving him rides regularly for the past year after seeing him walk every day along crooks road. >> he is an inspiring person and his attitude is really what's more amazing than the number of
