not two but three tractor trailers that have jackknifed up there. it's a parking lot here. boston seeing its snowiest week on record. nearly three feet. >> we got the big blizzard and it sounds like there's more to come. >> reporter: the midwest hit hard too. chicago digging out from its fifth biggest winter storm. >> as you know this has been a snowstorm for the record books and we're seeing a record response as well. >> reporter: that record storm creating a traffic nightmare there. two semis jackknifed leading to a chain reaction pileup. luckily, there were no serious injuries. train travel not any easier. on new york's long island workers deliberately setting fire to the tracks to stop them from freezing over. but other commuters less lucky. a chicago-bound amtrak train stalling stuck for three hours. >> oh. >> reporter: in boston 50 commuters stuck for over two hours after their train stalled thanks to a frozen third rail. flyers also left stranded. over 4,000 flights canceled monday.

right now in new york temperature is 15 degrees, too cold for salt. big time cold. the big screen for your mass winter weather advisories also the windchill advisories for the dangerous cold across upstate new york and pennsylvania. watching another storm, this one, an alberta clipper adding insult to injury chicago will get 1 to 3 inches and moves toward the east coast. it remains active and keep you posted. winter doesn't want to end. >> every sunday night we get a storm. come on inside. the latest on that measles outbreak. new numbers from the cdc this morning. now reporting more than 100 cases and health experts are sounding the alarm making an urgent plea for parents to get their kids vaccinated. our dr. richard besser is one of them. good morning, rich. >> this outbreak is showing no signs of letting up. there are more cases this year than there were the entire year of 2012. this has a lot of doctors and parents very concerned.

this morning, that telltale rash is spreading. the cdc now saying 102 individuals infected with measles across 14 states. officials in toronto now racing to investigate four cases discovered in just the last week. the american academy of pediatrics urging parents to vaccinate their children against the disease. if only for the sake of babies too young to get the shots. saying monday it is heartbreaking to know that these vulnerable children may be at risk if parents refuse or delay getting their children vaccinated. a day-care center at this santa monica high school closing its doors monday after a 1-year-old tested positive for the virus. officials quarantining 14 infants from the center for 21 days. >> the department of public health will determine the exposure to either students on that campus staff and other babies and toddlers in that program. >> reporter: the highly contagious disease even infecting politics. new jersey governor chris christie saying monday parents need to have some measure of choice. his office later clarifying his

remarks saying there is no question kids should be vaccinated. senator rand paul arguing monday that vaccines should be a parent's choice. >> i'm not arguing vaccines. i think they're a good thing but i think the parents should have input. >> reporter: hillary clinton tweeting overnight, the science is clear, the earth is round, the sky is blue and #vaccineswork. let's protect all our kids. the cdc recommends that children get their first dose of measles vaccine when they're 12 to 15 months old this. provides great protection from measles and also helps protect other children who are either too young or unable to get vaccinated. >> thanks very much. i know you'll take questions again on twitter this morning. i'll get more on the politics from jon karl in washington. we saw in rich's piece this has become a bit of a minefield for some of these republican candidates. >> reporter: it sure has, george and the difference at least in tone among the top republicans is stark. on one hand you have people like wisconsin governor scott walker

former arkansas governor mike huckabee who say absolutely no question about it, everybody should be vaccinated. on the other hand as you heard dr. besser report you have chris christie and rand paul just yesterday both talking about how parents should have a choice although both say the measles vaccine is important. both talking about choice and rand paul went even further yesterday saying that he's heard of many cases where, quote, children wound up with profound mental disorders after vaccines." as dr. besser will tell you there's no scientific evidence to back that up. >> no, but, you know the thing is cutting politics and pockets of this interisment on both the right and the left. >> reporter: that's right. in fact barack obama when he was a candidate back in 2008 said that you know there was a lot of questions about the connect and said directly the science right now is inconclusive but we have to research it. that was obama back in 2008. although now what the president says is that he has no question

everybody should be vaccinated. there is no danger. the only danger is not getting vaccinated. >> very clear on that-on-sunday. jon karl thanks very much. to amy with the other top stories. good morning, everyone. we begin with news affecting every driver in america. for the first time in four months gas prices are on the rise. one reason is because this is the time of year when oil refine refineryies shut down some of their operations for maintenance. the average price is 2.06 a gallon an increase of a couple of cents but some gas stations in california could raise prices by 20 to 30 crepes in the coming weeks. experts predict an increase of 30 to 50 cents nationwide by may. two headlines this morning affecting some big-name american retail brands. first radio shack is refusing to comment on a report that the company is preparing to shut down half its stores and sell the others to sprint. staples and office depot may be joining forces. "the wall street journal" says the two companies are in advanced merger talks. well for the first time in

five months we are seeing new pictures of fidel castro. they show the 8-year-old engaged in what appears to be a lively conversation with a university student. the release of the photos comes just days after rumors emerged about castro's poor health. and newly released video shows a wild shootout in this arizona jewelry store. a woman pulls a gun on the owner when he refuses to hand over the cash she shoots him in the leg. he then throws money at her and starts firing back. both survived their injuries and the owner says he's forgiven her says everybody makes mistakes. in california veering off the trail proved to be a mistake for this hiker in the hollywood hills. she found herself on unstable -- on an unstable ledge with no way up or down and managed to phone for help rescued after 90 minutes, the fire department helicopter was able to get her near the famous hollywood sign. a royal caribbean cruise ship returned to port in baltimore one day early after more than 200 passengers and

crew members became sick apparently with that nasty norovirus. the cruise line says most passengers were treated on board. a passenger plane trying to land in england ran into serious resistance from the wind. you can see it here being engulfed by nasty gusts more than 50 miles an hour. shaking the plane like a toy. after a couple of tries the pilot did manage to land safely. wow. whoo! and finally donations are pouring in this morning to help a detroit man who walks 21 miles to and from work every day. james robertson walks to his factory job five days a week even in the snow. he started making the daily trek when his car broke down ten years ago. buses don't cover his route. well a college student inspired by his story started a gofundme page online to buy him a secondhand car and get this he's now raised more than $130,000. what will that buy you? >> roll around in a benz.

he's going to go to work in a nice bentley or porsche. >> he has a perfect attendance record by the way. never missed a day of work. >> the true heart of the story. people coming to his aid like that. >> so incredible. >> two car dealerships offering him a car. he's definitely getting a car out of this. well deserved. >> never complained. he didn't ask for it. >> that's amazing. >> in great shape too. >> he was. all right, amy thank you. to a crackdown on popular herbal supplements. an investigation by the new york state attorney general's office alleges some store brands sold by four major retailers have misleading labels after tests found quality control issues. abc's tom llamas is here with that. >> reporter: many of us take herbal supplements before before you pop the pill today you want to watch this report. some of the biggest retail chains in the u.s. are allegedly selling supplements that are missing key ingredients and could put you at risk. americans spend billions every year on herbal supplements like

ginseng, he can nash ya and st. john's wort. but buyers beware. a new york state investigation alleging some store brand supplements sold by walmart, walgreens, target and gnc are in its words bogus. nearly 80% of the state's test results found the store brand supplements tested did not contain what is listed on the label. >> a good number of cases there were no organic material in the product. in some cases there was sand. >> reporter: new york's attorney general sending these cease and desist letters to the four retailers demanding they pull the supplements from their shelves and provide additional information about the products tested. is that dangerous. >> it is dangerous if there's something in there you didn't expect and you're allergic to. >> reporter: the report says the store brands of ginkgo biloba and st. john's wort at all four stores did not test positive for either herb. walmart, wall green and gnc's

version of ginseng and echinacea failed the ingredient test. gnc says it stands by its products and the kinds of tests used may not be appropriate for these herbal products. walmart says it's reaching out to the suppliers and will take appropriate action. target telling us it's committed to providing high quality and safe products. but walgreens saying it's in the process of removing these products as we review this matter further. new york's attorney general stands by the report saying nearly 400 tests were done. if you do want to take herbal supplements do research online and on the brand and make sure an independent third party has tested it. george. >> those are startling findings. thanks very much. we turn to the nfl rookie nicknamed johnny football. johnny manziel came into the league with all kinds of hype but after a rocky first season notable for his partying more than playing he checked himself into rehab and matt gutman has the story. >> reporter: johnny manziel, known for shaking off tacklers

found unresponsive in a bathtub at her town home in suburban atlanta. in it police describe what happened as a possible drowning. here's her husband nick gordon seen outside the hospital where she is being treated. he and a friend discovered her barely breathing and started cpr to save her. the family of her famous mother the late whitney houston is thanking fans for their prayers saying in a statement, bobbi kristina is fighting for her life and is surrounded by immediate family. as her father already stated we are asking you to honor our request for privacy during this difficult time. interview on lifetime in january her father singer bobby brown describes how much his daughter still suffers after the death of her mother in 2012. whitney houston was also found unresponsive and face down in a bathtub. >> some days are good. some days are bad but for the most part she remembers her mom in such a beautiful way that i wish everybody could just see,

you know how she remembers her mom. >> reporter: she opened up about her mother in a 2014 interview with splash news. >> she was a royal, beautiful and out of this world phenomenal woman that will never ever be another whitney houston and i'm my mother's child. >> reporter: bobby admits he's had a difficult relationship with his daughter and court documents show last year one of her relatives took out a restraining order on nick gordon just after they married they sat down for this interview clearly in love. >> we're excited. you know we're starting a new life together. you know we're starting a new family. >> reporter: the family has clearly put aside differences and come together for this. police have yet to reveal if they found anything in that town home. robin. >> okay steve, good that the family is able to come together for bobbi kristina at this time. we wish her the absolute best and she's in our prayers and thoughts. now to the former star of the hit kids show "power

rangers" in court this morning accused of stabbing his roommate to death with a sword. actor ricardo medina jr. called 911 himself after the fatal altercation. abc's kendis gibson has that story for us. ♪ power rangers ♪ >> reporter: best known as the sword-wielding power ranger. this morning actor ricardo medina is behind bars accused of using a sword in real life. police say to kill his roommate in their southern california home. >> but he couldn't help it. >> reporter: police say the 36-year-old actor got into an argument with his house mate joshua suter saturday. medina claims he and his girlfriend retreated to his bedroom. when he says suter forced his way in. that's when cops say medina picked up the sword fatally stabbing suter in the abdomen. it's medina who then called 911 from the scene. >> the vic was transported to the hospital. was pronounced dead at the hospital. >> welcome back. >> reporter: medina who starred

here and it's flowing 40 kilometer as way from the mother volcano underground and comes up here in this crater. >> that's what's amazing. while we're doing this we're able to see through eric's cameras what the drones are seeing so eric will stay quiet and focus because he's a responsible drone operator and has a lot of experience in this. does it excite you that we're going to see parts of science and parts of the world that we've never been able to get this close to. >> it's very interesting technique that you can fly over there and looking into the crater without being there. so on the safe side as we can stay. >> we're learning something all the time. you have cameras mounted all over. >> yes, definitely. >> you've been studying iceland's volcanic eruptions. this is a place, you guys that is always moving. >> it is moving. >> constantly going. >> iceland is growing then in the middle here where we have the active volcano, magma and lava coming up. >> eric how are we doing? >> are we getting close. >> yeah we're getting close. >> the moment is almost here.

we'll get up and over the lip. what are we seeing? can you describe bjorn. >> the crater itself here that's in the middle of the lava and the lava field voups it and in the beginning it's longer with a wall of fire but with time since we came here last time it's been growing and merging into one crater so there is like a bubbling pot with magma coming up through the ground and flows with the river. >> we have to stay this far away because the gases are toxic. >> you can see all the gas and toxic is going the other direction. >> bjorn, it's happening right here. oh my gosh you can see it. look at this. we're just getting inside that crater. >> so there it is cooking the lava and lava flows into the tubes and that feeds the whole area of lava. >> wow. eric has that look and he can get even closer and we're able to get just the detail that you can see, so again, over 2100

degrees inside there and it is bubbling and at times before this it was erupting and you would see a wall of fire but this is enough fire for me. i mean -- >> yeah it was but in the beginning it's gas, it goes up and you have a wall of fire with several hundred meters of fire but has slowed down but still is very active. >> you can see the walls here. you see the steam coming up. is that just heat? >> yeah the steam is both gases and also water which is coming from the magma itself. >> wow. again, the video you guys are seeing is something that really no one has been able to do live here being able to get inside a volcanic eruption and even it's bubbling there and you can see the river. did you just see that the chunks of ash falling off the side and it's constantly changing. bjorn was telling me the sides of that crater have already in the last couple of months since august when this became very active it started falling apart and changing shape. george. >> yeah i just want to -- what

can we learn from what the drones are picking up right here? >> so george is asking what can we learn from what the drones are picking up. if we're able to get this close -- >> what is important is to monitor the area and see the change with time so if you take images from drones or other equipment, we can compare from time to time what's happening. >> aviation is a huge concern when it comes to niece and know in 2010 that was a big deal. >> that was a big deal then we'd corruption and the glacier and ash plume going into the atmosphere. in whole this is a lava eruption and no ash is emitted. >> right now. >> right now. but there's always a fear there could be another ash eruption and saying flash flooding could be a problem. if this lava you're seeing here is underground and tars melting all of the glacier. >> it does so the largest problem associated with that is because icelandic volcanoes are often capped by the glacier.

all behind is a glacier, the largest in europe. if eruptions tart it melts the ice and produces a water that can flash -- >> can go over roads. >> if it breaks through -- >> can we get any closer at all, eric? is there any way -- >> we can get a little closer. >> how far up are we. >> at 120 meters. like 380 feet. 400 feet. >> 380 feet over it. oh my goodness. >> wow, but what you have to also say this lava field is the middle of iceland. >> far away from anyone. not affecting anyone right here but has so many other implications h is amazing. look at that river of lava. i mean, you can see just the detail in there and, again, what we can learn from this not only in volcanic eruptions but also i think of this in the way of science, in the way of storms. we've used them in part in flooding when people need to see their hopes in wildfire not

so many of tennis phenom monica seles' triumphs and tragedies took place on the court for all to see but one struggle was kept largely private until now. >> my eating was just uncontrollable. >> reporter: monica a paid spokesperson for scheyer pharmaceuticals is hoping to raise awareness for bipg eating disorder which affects 2.8 million americans. thank you for coming forward. it's nice to have a face that is not afraid to say, look this is real. it happens to many of us and i'm willing to step forward and to get some help. >> yeah for me it was an easy decision really to come forward about bipg eating disorder. i wanted to let people out there know who struggles from it they're not alone. >> so binge makes one think about bulimia but this is very different. would you share with us the difference? >> for sure. my permanent experience binge eating is eating huge and i mean huge quantities of food in a very short period of time so for

me when i was in stressful situations i would start my binge eating. trigger food was pretzels potato chips and would do them alone because i was so ashamed here i was a tennis player so dedicated yet in this one area of binge eating i was out of control. >> reporter: then a turning point. monica was asked to be a bridesmaid at a friend's wedding. >> as an athlete you're sporting and wanted to be glamorous and here i had to go in for fittings because my weight would be nukt waiting because of my binge eating. so for me there came a point when i said there's more to life than this. i decided to talk to my health care provider and really come up with an individual plan that worked for me. this is one of the reasons i'm so passionate about it because i live with it and if you feel you are experiencing some of the symptoms go out there talk to your health care provider there's help out there. you don't have to suffer in silence like i did for so many years. >> you know i'm a big tennis fan
