"action news" investigation looks at potentially dangerous cargo on philadelphia's rails, next. it is tuesday night and the big story on "action news" tonight is breaking news, from west chester county, new york. seven people were killed tonight, as a commuter train slammed into a jeep cherokee.

the the suv was stuck at the railroad crossing in new york, when the railroad track gates had come down on the vehicle. the driver got out looked at the rear of the suv got back in started to drive forward and then came the crash. the train plowed the vehicle down the track, both the suv and front of the train burst into flames. ten passengers were hurt in addition to the fatalities, including the driver of the suv. 400 passengers were evacuated from the rear of the train. it was just this past december when four people were killed on the same line, when a train derailed, in the bronx. this now is a live picture from a helicopter above the scene in new york where the metro north line has been obviously been shut down and it should stay that way for a good long time. this is the second busiest train line in the country with

280,000 passengers a a day. federal railroad administration accused the metro north line this past march of letting safety concerns slip while pushing to keep trains on time. there is another danger on the tracks, weaving its way through the city of philadelphia and neighborhood in new jersey. investigative reporter wendy saltsman will have our special report on what critics called bomb trains coming up later in this broadcast. police in radnor delaware county are searching for the individual who fired a shot into a home in bryn mawr. the bullet came to within 3 feet of a sleeping 12 year-old boy. zach marino was asleep in his bed relevant i thursday morning on the 600 block of bryn mawr avenue when a noise woke him right up. >> it sounded like cracking wood. i looked around and i went back to sleep. that sim is many. >> reporter: what his moth wore find in his room days later would be enough to give anyone nightmares. laura marino first spotted this hole in the wall. then she discovered a bullet in the carpet. >> oh, i was like shaking. you know i was scar. i felt like something sort of invaded, you know, encroached upon our home and invaded our home. >> reporter: marino's husband found where that bullet struck their home. he looked around the property for more evidence and spotted the original target, this road sign. radnor township police say someone was firing at the sign on the street filled with homes. it was a stray bullet that hit the marine owe's house and image of the sign you can see the home in the background. but for the the past few days delaware county detectives searched the area and used lays tore confirm the

trajectory. that bullet went through the wall 3 feet from zach's headboard and caused damage to a closet door. >> just unusual it seems reckless that people would drive around and shoot at street signs. i don't understand the fun in that. >> reporter: zach was afraid to sleep in his room over the weekend but now he is back and he has word for that shooter. >> i just want them to know that their reckless actions could have murdered an innocent child. >> reporter: marino's say it was saturday before they discovered that stray bullet and called police bay thursday morning they left for a two day ski trip. up investigators believe that bullet, came from possibly a 38 caliber weapon, jim. reporting live from radnor township tonight kenneth moton for channel six "action news". thanks kenneth. chester county authorities are saying tonight there is no danger to the public, after a man was stabbed to death in the west goshen home this afternoon. investigators believe the homicide was a result of the domestic fight.

it happened, inside of this house, in the 1200 block of estate drive. police have not released the name the of the victim. fbi provided "action news" with these surveillance photos tonight of a rittenhouse square bank robber in philadelphia, holding what appears to be a hand grenade. authorities say the bandit gave the teller a threatening demand note at susquehanna bank at 1845 walnut just before 5:00 o'clock. he ran a away with cash. he is still at large. police found the grenade near 20th and fitzwater but bomb squad determined it was not a device. authorities are looking into similarity with another center citibank robbery late last tonight. just a few blocks away at the republic first bank at 16th and walnut. in that hold up suspect used an allege bomb with wires sticking out. nobody was hurt there. this is the scene last thursday morning when a telephone bomb threat forced the evacuation of the montgomery county courthouse.

five years. but it is another cargo ship. that is focus of tonight's "action news" investigating. we are looking in the transportation of a highly flammable and hazardous chemical that is being shipped, right through the center of philadelphia. it is called backen oil a form of crude oil. early saturday, 11 tank car carrying crude oil derailed in south philadelphia a. the last january a one on one car ssx train derailed on the schuylkill, six of those cars were carrying crude. two freight cars dangled dangerously over the river. tonight, investigative reporter wendy saltsman is uncovering the routes these trains are traveling right through your neighborhoods and whether enough is being done to keep us all safe. wendy. >> reporter: i can tell you that this is a topic very few are emergency responders wanted to talk to us b more than a handful of local departments including city of philadelphia and several municipalities in new jersey decline our request for an

interview. our cameras caught this potentially dangerous material being transported right along the schuylkill river densely populated neighborhood and into neighboring new jersey. they have been called bomb trains, more than 100 car freight trains carrying crude oil, traveling across the oil field in north day coat shipped to gas refineries right here in philadelphia camden and across the you had. >> i think it is back and forth, just flammability. >> reporter: emergency response experts describe this crude as a volatile, unstable for the of petroleum. rail safety and security consultant fred miller says there is no way for emergency responders to be prepared if the worst case scenario were to happen here in philadelphia. >> everybody should be extremely worried, in fact, there is no effective emergency response to a crude oil derailment. >> reporter: in july 2013, 47 people were killed when a train loaded with the crude ran off the track, exploded

and then burned down half a town of quebec. there have been crude oil explosionness north dakota and another one in virginia. right here in philadelphia a csx train carrying crude oil derailed right over the the schuylkill last january. and over the weekend, 111 car s csx train derailed near a south philadelphia rail yard. there were no injuries and no oil was is spilled in those incidents. >> i think we have been certainly very fortunate in the whole scheme of things that we have not had, you know any significant accidents certainly any tragedies. >> reporter: but the the question is did philadelphia just dodge a massive bomb-like catastrophe with the latest derailment is here. "action news" found those trains traveling day and night and across multiple sections of the city. some trains so close, that we or anyone else could access them. in camden, near a playground. >> i'm extremely concern now because this is first i have heard of crude oil being

transported here that flammable. >> reporter: right along the schuylkill trail. >> i don't know what kind of chemicals they have. >> in one knows, it is scary. >> reporter: those residents we spoke to had no idea something so explosive is being transported right in their own backyard. >> it is dangerous. >> reporter: new jersey state police invited "action news" to the training drill, one of many happening across the region. >> you have to look at what happened out in the other parts of the country and realizing some of that stuff might happen here and what lessons we can learn from those incident. >> reporter: local, state, federal agencies tell "action news" that they are preparing for the the possibility of a chemical fire. no one was willing to tell us just how bad a scenario it could be. >> it would be hard to say for this one situation, it could be 1 mile, 2 miles, 3 miles. >> reporter: national transportation safety board estimates crude oil ship. increased 40 fold since 2005. critics are demanding safer tanker cars, railroad and for more information to be released to the public but miller warns that the regulations are moving slower
