>> we'll get the latest from rob, but first, we start with aditi roy who is in sacramento. aditi, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan. here in northern california, residents are recovering from one storm and bracing for the next one. watching those river levels so carefully as heavy rain and high winds are expected to sweep through the area. this morning, both coasts bracing for another wallop of extreme weather. in the west, nearly six inches of rain expected in already storm-ravaged areas. neighbors rushing to clean up downed trees and power lines from friday's storms before the next one hits. look at the roots of this 90-foot pine tree. here in berkeley california. feels massive just standing next to it. it fell on three homes. no one was hurt. the east coast bracing for another round of snow and freezing rain. that could break records in parts of new england. the weather system threatening to bring at least a foot of snow. >> these patterns of just snow week after week after week, it's not been like this in ages, right? >> doesn't seem like it. is there a danger of snow fatigue?

>> i think so. yeah. it's only february. >> reporter: january 26th and 27th a powerful storm brought more than two feet of snow in spots. on monday, some places got over a foot of snow. and now we're expected to get over another foot of snow on top of it all. in northern california, the rain expected in a few hours and lasting through the day. paula? >> it's not over yet. aditi roy, thank you so much. rob is outside tracking the bicoastal extreme weather. rob, i imagine folks on both coasts saying not again. >> exactly. and these are two very, very potent storms. we'll start with the west. because the storm that's coming to the east actually originated in the pacific. this is from the atmospheric river that's been pointed at the west coast for the greater part of the last week. torrential rains for the northwest. the next storm coming in has winds with it, too. we had winds this week over 100 miles an hour in the mountains. we could see that again today and tonight.

it starts in san francisco. potentially power outages there. rainfall, a handful more inches. mudslides possible. the beneficial rains don't get south to los angeles and san diego, unfortunately. a number of winter weather advisories and storm warnings in the northeast. in areas they were posted this time last week. and the week before that. yes, it's another sunday night and monday storm. that means that the monday morning commute is going to be a nightmare again. watch the freezing line. the mixing, the pink area there, as we get towards new york, 9:00 a.m., snow and also some icing, especially along long island in through pennsylvania. a very trernlg rouse commutetreacherous commute in the new york tristate area. more accumulating snow the boston. a multiday event. 12 to 18 inches of snow through central new england and upstate new york. lesser amounts to the south. no less of a mess as we go toward another monday storm. dan, back over to you.

into a firing range with shoppers ducking for cover. bazi kanani is on the scene in monroeville, pennsylvania. good morning, bazi. >> reporter: good morning, paula. police have gone through every store in this mall more than 100 of them, evacuating people. making sure the gunman was not still inside. they captured him a few hours ago elsewhere. they have not said why he chose this place to attack. >> notify forbes. three gunshot victims. >> reporter: the panic in a packed shopping mall. >> people started running. >> reporter: this morning, police in pittsburgh have arrested 17-year-old tarod thornhill, suspected of opening fire in a macy's store injuring three and sending hundreds of terrified shoppers scrambling for their lives. >> we heard people screaming. next thing you see is a bunch of people, teenagers, scared to death, just exodus en masse. >> reporter: the shooting around 7:30 saturday night near the

inside entrance to the department store. just feet away from the mr. rogers neighborhood play area. in the chaos, children separated from their parents. >> there was another little boy, he's like i can't find my mommy. i can't find my mommy. i grabbed him, too. >> reporter: also escaping, terelle pryor, former kansas city chiefs quarterback. tweeting -- didn't see who was shooting. i was looking, but ten more shots went off. and was getting closer to me. then i ran. police say the shooting was not random. >> we believe one of those three people that were shot was a targeted individual. >> reporter: that man and to bystanders remained hospitalized this morning. many more at the mall still shaken. of the three victims, two men are in critical condition. a woman was less seriously injured and is expected to survive. again, the suspected gunman is a 17-year-old, currently being charged as an adult. dan? >> the 17-year-old arrested hours ago. thank you. bazi kanani. we move on to an exclusive report from the ground in the american-led fight against isis.

murderer's fight for freedom. the subject is serving a life sentence for killing his ex-girlfriend. but has now been granted a chance to prove he deserves a new trial. gloria riviera has the story. >> reporter: good morning, paula. what a case. it was 15 years ago that a popular high school athlete's chief change forever. his ex-girlfriend, brutally murdered. her body buried in a nearby park. a key piece of evidence in the trial revolved around this best buy parking lot. just behind me. now a veteran reporter making it her mission to definitively answer did he really do it? and the same court system that september him away ready to reconsider. >> what they're saying is, maybe there was another guy in there that i just never -- knew. >> reporter: it's the public radio podcast helping this prisoner get a second chance. to prove his innocence. >> the podcast has had such a tremendous effect on potentially reversing a murder conviction.

>> reporter: at age 18 adnan syed was sentenced to life behind bars for the 1999 murder of his ex-girlfriend, hae min lee. a case forgotten until it became part of the podcast serial. more than 5 million listeners had a chance to hear a different side of the now 34-year-old prisoner than the one prosecutors portrayed in the trial. >> i don't think i ever displayed any tendencies like that. >> reporter: the convictions relied on testimony from his friend, who told the court syed calleded him from pay phone in the best buy parking lot. asking for a ride after burying lee's body. >> i just want to pause here and talk about this phone booth for a minute. weirdly, we have not been able to confirm its existence. >> reporter: all of syed's tries to appeal his conviction have so far failed.

car. but that's another subject. we need to get it over to ron who has been tracking the other stories for us. >> hi there, paula and dan. sara haines. good morning. good morning, everyone. a georgia community is reeling this morning after man goes on a shooting rampage during a family gathering. five people are dead, including two children. kendis gibson has more on this horrifying massacre. >> reporter: this morning, the horror of what happened in this suburban atlanta neighborhood starting to set in. seven people shot. several children among the victims. five dead. two children surviving this terrible tragedy. >> it's always hard when you have children that are involved in this. it's just -- it's kind of -- touches your heart. >> reporter: neighbors, eyewitnesses to the rampage, tried to save the victims before paramedics gone on the scene. police in douglas county, georgia, say the gunman hid in a car outside of a home and then opened fire in the middle of the street. shooting his ex-wife, her new

boyfriend, and several young children. >> the innocent little children and innocent family trying to live a new family life. and to get disturbed like this is very sad. >> reporter: the violence continued indoors, with police saying there were victims inside the house. the gunman eventually shooting and killing himself. >> i've been with the sheriff's office 38 years. i have never seen this many victims in one shooting. >> reporter: this morning, two of the youngest victims of this rampage are alive, but have lost many family members. and those two surviving children listed in critical condition this morning. those neighbors who witnessed it all and ran to help the victims as best they could credited with saving those two young lives. ron? >> okay, kendis, thank you. and now out west to a massive wildfire that has torched dozens of homes and structures in two states. the round fire started on a highway on the california-nevada state line. the fire exploded with winds of 75 miles an hour whipped through at the area. heavy rain helped fire crews

keep that wildfire from spreading even farther. a moment of silence and prayers for bobbi kristina brown. at clive davis' annual pregrammys party. at the gala saturday night magic johnson asked music's biggest stars to pause for bobbi kristina as she fights for her life in a georgia hospital. her mother whitney houston, died the night before clive davis' party. before the grammys three years ago. bobbi kristina is in a medically induced coma after being found face down in a bathtub a week ago. take a look at this, dramatic rescue caught on a florida police officer's body cam. it happened this past christmas. the videos just being released. two police officers spotted man trapped inside of his burning car. the officers smashed the car window and pulled the man out of the smoke and flames. deputies joseph trimboli and eric keyes were honored this

real-life drama for the olympic gold medalist turned reality star bruce jenner. he was involved in a tedly car crash in malibu california. it happened on saturday. >> jenner walked away from the accident. there are questions this morning about the role of paparazzi in the fatal accident. linzie janis is on the scene in malibu this morning. good morning, linzie. >> reporter: good morning, paula and dan. the deadly multiple car pileup occurring here on this narrow and winding stretch of the pacific coast highway. jenner's car pushing another into oncoming traffic. the paparazzi following him capturing the whole thing on camera. this morning, bruce jenner no doubt counting his blessings after escaping unharmed from deadly chain reaction accident saturday on the pacific coast highway in malibu. >> we now have seven patients. including one doa. >> reporter: jenner's suv was the last car involved in this pileup. it was his vehicle that bumped this white lexus into oncoming

traffic. the elderly woman inside hit head-on by a black humvee. she was declared dead at the scene. >> minors were in one of the vehicles. they were transported to santa monica hospital. >> jenner's going tremendously. >> reporter: jenner, a 1976 olympic gold medal winner now perhaps best known as the patriarch of the kardashian reality tv empire. >> paparazzi. >> reporter: under intense tabloid scrutiny regarding his changing appearance, growing his hair longer and appearing in public with his nails painted. his step daughter, kim kardashian, speaking with "entertainment tonight" about the speculation. >> i think it's just his story to talk about. >> reporter: jenner telling investigators he was being followed by paparazzi at the time of the crash. >> bruce, are you okay? >> reporter: the moment of impact captured here. >> he has intense scrutiny on him right now, both through his physical transition as well as

just being part of the extended kardashian family. >> reporter: deputies say jenner is fully cooperating. it does not appear he was trying to evade the shutter bugs. sometimes criticized for taking their aggressive tactics too far. like this encounter are halle berry. >> stop har rasing people! >> reporter: in 2010 after a series of high-profile confrontations with stars, california passed a law imposing stiffer penalties including jail time for paparazzi who drive recklessly in pursuit of celebrities. again, police say it doesn't appear that the paparazzi did anything to cause this crash. bruce jenner passed a sobriety test and volunteered to give a blood sample to show he was not intoxicated. investigators will be focusing on the first car in the pileup. why did it suddenly slow down?
