u the conditions at this hour. as we said icy spots can be hard to see so of course a good idea to take it easy out there. we do have team coverage on the winter weather. john rawlins live in bucks county but first let's head to meteorologist cecily tynan with the latest from accuweather. >> hi monica and rick. this is our third messy run in a row. storm tracker 6 live double scan showing the setup. there's low pressure over south western virginia and this low pressure is diving to the south and east. heavy snow yet again across new england boston already more than a foot of snow from the s between the two we've got this. light precipitation. the problem is that it's falling in the form of freezing rain. and it doesn't take much freezing rain to really create a glaze on those untreated surfaces and cause problems. storm tracker 6 showing we have a batch of some freezing rain over new castle, southern new castle and northern kent county and we also have some light pockets of some freezing rain mixing in with sleet in our northwest suburbs. no heavy precipitation but

this will continue into the night and even into the overnight hours. so the national weather service has posted winter weather advisories for entire viewing area for the combination of freezing rain and sleet. the northern suburbs these are in effect until midnight but philadelphia and areas to the south the winter weather advisory continues until 6 o'clock tomorrow morning. so this could cause some problems for the beginning of the morning commute. the problem the temperatures. right now temperatures generally below freezing and we will not climb above freezing until midday tomorrow. so, this is what to expect tonight. some scattered freezing rain and sleet mixed in. a few snow showers could be possible with a quick coating mainly the problem the freezing rain, though. untreated surfaces will be icy. be careful with sidewalks and driveways and then after this, it's going to be a very busy week weather-wise. thursday a system brings us snow showers. more snow on saturday and then sunday i'm tracking the coldest air so far this season. wait until you see these numbers. i'll have details in the accuweather 7-day forecast.

monica. >> thank you cecily. let's switch to "action news" reporter john rawlins with the latest situation there. >> reporter: hi, monica. it always amazes me how a thin layer of frozen water s can cause so much trouble but that's what happened this morning. people here in parts of bucks county woke up to ice like that. it center a lot of people to hospitals. saint mary's hospital here had to call in extra staff to deal with the parade of people that showed up starting this morning. >> we're still seeing them now. as a matter of fact, it feels like every time we get five in, 10 arrive but it's the nature of an emergency department. >> reporter: charles kunkle says ice and its effects possible responsible for maybe 70 percent of those coming to saint mary's er today. >> we've had a few traumas you know patients falling and hitting their head while on blood thinners, traffic accidents, minor traffic accidents but traffic accidents nonetheless and mostly slips and falls twisted ankles, broken bones. >> reporter: the culprit an

overnight light drizzling rain that froze into a patina ice that covered untreated surfaces. cars, sidewalks driveways. footing could be tricky. one step solid the next almost frictionless. harry hughes cleaning off his wife's car saw that first gland as soon as she went around her car whew, she lost it. >> reporter: harry says his wife was physically okay. in richboro shortly before noon a driver was uninjured after slaming into a gas station. by late morning, most roads were in good shape but as the driver of this car in a ditch will attest, that wasn't the case in the predawn hours. >> woodburn road, this is before the salt trucks or anything came out and just the whole road was just covered in ice and lost control of my car and went right into the ditch. >> reporter: certainly a tough morning for drivers. road conditions right now better than certainly this

winter storm warnings are in effect now for central new york the western cat skills and much of new england. schools and municipal offices in many communities are closed and parking bans are in effect. the mayor of boston is deeply concerned. >> never seen this type of snow here in the city of boston any other time in the history of our city. we're running out of space where to put all the snow that we have in the city of boston. >> boston's already been hit with nearly 5 feet of snowfall this winter and our coverage of the snowstorm up north continues on world news tonight with david muir. that's at 6:30 right after "action news" after 6:00. we're learning much more about the murder of a millersville university student from chadds ford. the freshman was found dead in her dorm room and now her boyfriend is behind bars. police say 19-year-old gregorio orrostieta and 18-year-old karlie hall were in a physical altercation before her death early yesterday. officials say orrostieta told officers he had shoved hall and hit her in the face knocking her out but an

autopsy today revealed she had been strangled. coming up at 6 o'clock, chad pradelli will have a full report from the millersville campus. a university of delaware football player faces assault charges tonight. police in newark say roman tatum attacked three other students after he was asked to leave a party. it happened saturday night at an apartment on center street. investigators say one of the victims had his front teeth knocked out. tatum turned himself in yesterday and was released on bond. the price at the pump continues to climb and it's not showing any signs of stopping. aaa reports the average price of a gallon of regular in the philadelphia area is $2.37. that's up 14 cents in the last week alone. over in delaware, drivers are paying $2.16 and in south jersey the average is under two dollars at $1.98. and the increases aren't just here they're happening coast to coast. cynwyd with how drivers are dealing with the change. vern. >> reporter: they have no choice but to deal. gas prices are still more than a dollar per gallon below where they were at the same time last year and most of us knew the two dollars a gallon jackpot was not going to last forever. but now concern is growing and creeping in. >> no reason for it. everybody was happy. gas was going down. everybody got excited. >> reporter: yes consumers like scott are irate. big oil give and take way. the fries fill the gas price is on the rise. the price for regular has jumped 12 cents in the last week and, yes, those of moderate incomes are feeling the squeeze. >> that's horrible. that is terrible. and it stayed low for a minute. that's why i don't understand why it's going back up high again. >> reporter: did you think it was going to stay that way forever down low. >> no, i didn't think it was going stay that low forever but i didn't think it was going to come up as fast as it

did. >> all of a sudden it goes right back up again. there's no reason for it all, none at all. >> reporter: why are the prices going back up? ask aaa. >> that's primarily due to the fact that crude oil has reversed course. we saw it bottom out in the mid $40 per barrel range and now we're back up above $50 per barrel. >> reporter: the experts expect to see prices rise 30 to 50 cents a gallon as we head towards springtime. >> i knew it wasn't going last but we had to take advantage. >> reporter: now it's gone up 12 cents a gallon in the last week. >> i know. it's no helping. >> i seen it go up at least 30 cents some places already. i put the best gas so it's already been 30 cents or so. >> reporter: and how high will it go? >> it's likely that we won't see gas prices spike above three dollars at the national level in 2015. >> reporter: but beware of those crude oil prices. will hurricane season be kind and mild and give us a break? and there's always

>> president barack obama and german chancellor angela merkel say the ongoing violence in ukraine has reinforced u.s. and european unity. the topic of russian aggression was front and center as the president was joined by merkel today at the white house. the president opened the prospect that if another rounds of diplomatic talks with russia fails the u.s. may supply arms to ukraine's

military. merkel and other european leaders strongly oppose that move. jury selection has begun in the trial of the former marine accused of killing the man whose life inspired the movie american sniper. eddie ray is charged with capitol murder accused of shooting chris kyle and his friends chad little field at a gun range in texas two years ago. jurors were asked if they had seen american sniper or read kyle's 20's 12 memoir. the district attorney says seeing the film would not immediately disqualify a potential juror. >> health check tonight. medicine comes to the movies. one of the biggest movies out now with an oscar nomination for best actress tackles the reality of alzheimer's and dementia. >> health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman at the "action news" big board with that story. >> hi, guys. in the movie still allies julianne moore plays a university professor coming to grips with early onset dementia. she's already won three major awards and is a favorite for an oscar.

and her role hits home for some families in our area: to his friends he's the same old tim kauffman. but life for him and his partner, ron, has changed dramatically since he was diagnosed with dementia two years ago. >> it affects my ability to plan make decisions focus. >> initially he and ron thought the early signs were just stress from a demanding job. doctors didn't immediately recognize it either. >> when you're 52 years old they don't want to think that this is what's going on. >> but since that time, ron says dementia has made tim a very different person. >> tim lost the perception of time. >> yeah, oh, boy, that is a big one. >> tim has no emotion. tim doesn't get set, he doesn't get sad. he sort of flat lines. >> he says basically i'm a happy guy.

forecast is fun and an online tourism campaign. the season kicks off saturday with the city's polar bear plunge. lottery fever is gripping the u.s. again. the powerball jackpot has reached $450 million. nobody won the top prize in saturday's powerball drawing and the next one on wednesday will be one of the largest jackpots ever. the biggest was $590 million won by a florida woman in 2013. the odds of winning it all this time, though, are more than 175 million to one. and 6abc is your only place to watch the powerball drawing live. it will air at 10:59 wednesday night right before "action news" at 11:00.

chester county, near honeybrook. north of kutztown heavier and also notice northern lehigh valley some of that freezing rain is changing over to snow and there's some sleet pellets mixed in there so you really want to be careful. i've been getting a lot of photos on facebook and twitter. this was sent in by michael, from easton, pennsylvania and you'll notice that glaze on the mailbox there of ice. whenever you see a glaze of ice on mailbox your car that means the bridges the overpasses, the secondary roads, sidewalks can be icy as well so you want to be very careful much thanks to michael for sending that in. follow me on twitter because i'll keep you updated on the system as we head through overnight hours. this is really the concern tonight with the icing. again the untreated surfaces, the main highways are treated well so they're fine. cars and parking lots are getting that glaze. driveways and sidewalks you got to be careful. bridges and overpasses tend to ice up even when treated. temperatures right now below freezing in philadelphia it's

30 degrees. allentown 26. reading 27. millville 31. trenton 27 and wilmington 31 degrees. winds also a factor. the wind chill currently makes it feel like 20 in philadelphia, feels like 20 in wilmington. 15 in allentown. and 16 degrees in trenton. so it's a damp raw cold night. satellite6 along with action radar showing this is a setup. the low pressure is down across south western virginia. this is diving to our south and east. in the meantime there's high pressure up to the north that's what's creating that wedge of cold air. tomorrow this high pressure will take over as that low pressure moves away from us and that will dry things out. but future tracker showing through the overnight hours we're looking at some pockets of some freezing rain and drizzle, even early tomorrow morning some snow showers. the morning commute most of this will be south of our region and then heading into the afternoon the clouds will be breaking for some sunshine. the afternoon tomorrow is going to be a lot nicer than today. the call from accuweather for tonight, some freezing rain and drizzle and some sleet so definitely be careful with the icy spots.

>> hello again. here's what's happening on "action news" tonight. cars that come equipped with the latest wireless technology are all the rage but hackers are also taking notice. need ya' hahn with a report that says your safety behind the wheel is at risk. philadelphia detectives say five people dancing in this surveillance video may be tied to a murder that happened hours later. and a wilmington mental health center for young people is closing its doors. officials say it's for the best. we'll explain. >> now the details. a new report reveals how vulnerable car owners are to digital security breaches. automakers are souping up cars with wireless technology these days. but according to a new report, they have failed to adequately protect those features against hackers. consumer reporter nydia han is at the big board with the details. hi, nydia. >> reporter: hey, rick. the concern is major that hackers could not only steal your personal data but even take control of your vehicle while you're behind the wheel. now this new report comes from senator edward marquee's office and tweeted this this

morning. he says my new reporter on cyber security criminals just need an ipad to break into your car. cars and trucks today are essentially rolling computers and this new report says nearly 100 percent of vehicles on the market include wireless technologies. >> there's inherent failures, inherent security risks, if you will, that are available on all modern vehicles. >> reporter: senator marquee's report is based on information provided by 16 automakers. it concludes the majority of automaker security measures are inconsistent and haphazard in their ability to protect and prevent security breach. they pose a threat to driver security and privacy. >> any time you have a data connection like that there's a possibility of it being hacked. there needs to be security there needs to be encryption. i haven't seen encryption discussed much in terms of these features. >> reporter: the senator's report also reveals some automakers are sharing drivers personal information with third parties for marketing

purposes without the consumer even knowing. meantime a number of automotive trade groups have responded. the alliance of automobile manufacturers says there are already aggressive efforts to ensure that we are advancing safety. and the society of automotive engineers says it is evaluating the vulnerability of cars to hacking and drafting standards and best practices to help ensure safety. another trade association says the responses provided by automakers are many months old and do not reflect extensive discussions on cyber threets between the industry and technology experts. the senator's full report and response from the automotive industry on the consumer page on 6abc.com. back to you. >> nydia thank you. the fate of american hostage kayla mueller remains uncertain tonight. authorities say isis members who claim she was killed in a jordanian air strike last week have not offered any proof. jordanian warplanes continue their assault on isis targets in syria today. the murder of a jordanian

pilot strengthened efforts by coalition forces to take out the group. meanwhile kayla's parents issued an emotional appeal to her captors. >> the family were like to ask everyone out there including the nation and the world as a whole to remember kayla in a special prayer and a meditation on their heart that she returns to the family. >> later this week president obama's expected to ask congress for a vote to authorize the use of force against isis. the white house wants a bipartisan vote to show that america is united. >> gay couples are getting married today in alabama for the first time despite an appeal to the u.s. supreme court. these couples were among the first to say their vows after waiting in a long line. alabama's chief justice who is an outspoken opponents of same-sex marriage tried to block the weddings but the u.s. supreme court refused and alabama became the 37th state to allow gay marriage. world news tonight with david muir will have more on the alabama gay marriage fight as well as the latest on the american hostage being held by

isis. you can watch all that following "action news" at 6:00. we are following a developing situation in delaware county right now. fire crews remain on the scene after the report of fumes in the radnor township municipal building. it happened about an hour ago. authorities are trying to determine if carbon monoxide is leaking in the building or if it is an alarm malfunction. so far no injuries but we, of course will stay on top of the story and bring you updates just as soon as we get them. >> the investigation continues into a deadly home invasion last night in southwest philadelphia. happened along the 5800 block of fernwood street just after 11:30:00 p.m. authorities say a gunman entered the house and shot three people a-woman and two men. one of the victims a 37-year-old man was slot in the chest and later died at the hospital. the two other victims suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. no word yet on identities or arrests or why the house was targeted by the gunmen and police say nothing was taken from the home. investigators are hoping this surveillance video helps identify an armed thief who

robbed a south philadelphia sunoco gas station. it happened last wednesday afternoon at the location on the 1800 block of oregon avenue. the female employee told police the suspect walked in, pointed a gun at her and demanded money. she handed over the cash and then the man ran off. if you recognize the suspect you're asked to contact police. >> philadelphia detectives have released new surveillance video of five people of interin a murder iny in hunting park last month. this video is from inside the a lounge social club in the 4200 block of macalaster street. police believe the two men and three women on tape are connected to the shooting of two people hours after this was taken. one of the victims a 34-year-old man was killed. officials are now offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. a newark man was arrested after police say he fired several shots into his -- in his home last friday narrowly missing the family that lives next door. bullets went through the wall of the suspect's house into

the neighbor's home. everett fray's neighbors tell police they heard shots then saw some dry wall falling to the floor. police seized five firearms and ammunition from fray's house. he faces three counts of reckless endangerment. a psychiatric care center in wilmington shutting its doors for good later this month. it specializes in helping youth. many residents and former patients say the center needs to be saved. it's a story our delaware news room has been following. the herman rosen blaum child and adolescent center will close on the 20th. christiana health system says the closure is due to a new restructuring plan. the rosen blaum center offers intensive programs for young people between the ages of 12 and 18. supporters of the program say closing it could reverse crucial progress made with each patient. but health system officials say that won't happen. >> their care will be continued in the primary care center. we'll be making sure that the

transition is smooth and easy for them so they'll have the same access or better access to care. >> christiana care health system says the combining of physical and mental health services will ensure that patients get the proper treatment as soon as possible. advocates for special needs residents living in philadelphia lobbied city council for more support today. philadelphia housing authority chief kelvin jeremiah says there's not enough housing to support those living with physical and mental disabilities who want to live independently. he says of the thousands of people looking only 432 units become available each year. housing officials asked the city and the state to provide more funds to transform more public housing units into sustainable and suitable special needs housing. >> okay. >> all right. time to get a check on traffic out there for you monday evening. >> we go to matt pelman for a check of the commute home. it's icy and dicey this

morning. same thing tonight. >> yes, a few slippery spots. not widespread icing but definitely as you're walking on the sidewalk don't want to wipe out like i almost did this afternoon. yeah, there goes adam joseph right over there across the studio 42. slower than normal coming off the walt whitman bridge down to 55. just up ahead there's a crash mostly off to the side but giving "speak up!" extra slow speeds here on the southbound side of 42. if you're headed towards 42 on 295 southbound there's also a wreck again off to the side in haddon heights past route 30 but speeds like 13 miles per hour coming down from route 73 and we still have that pesky water main break in cinnaminson on 130 northbound approaching church road, two right lanes out of commission there by the pep boys. stay over on new albany road as a possible alternate. plenty of local accidents on the side streets like in southwest philadelphia 61st and lindbergh is an accident scene. in trumbauersville bucks county a building fire closing main street. trumbauersville road will get you around that and septa saying up to hour delays today

wednesday. prosecutors say the 16-year-old maxwell morton shot him in the face and then center a snapshot of himself with the body to another friend. morton also allegedly center a text that said "ryan was not the last one." his preliminary hearing is set for february 19. meanwhile an instagram photo helped track down the suspect in a weekend mall shooting near pittsburgh. 17-year-old tarad thorn hill is accused of shooting a 20-year-old man in the macy's at the monroeville mall saturday night. two bystander its were also hit. thorn hill's alleged target and one of the bystanders are still in critical condition but are expected to survive police say they matched one of thorn hill's instagram photos to surveillance footage from the mall. he's charged with aggravated assault and other crimes tonight. a former chicago area police officer convicted of killing his wife is now accused of trying to murder the prosecutor who put him behind bars. drew peterson's currently serving 38 years in prison for

>> cleanup efforts under way in northern california after heavy rain hit the area over the weekend. the rain proved too much for some hill sides sending trees and mud onto nearby roads. crumbling land and high winds also knocked down some power lines. some homes were damaged by debris but no one was seriously hurt. >> it's not heavy rain, not the snow but the ice we have to watch out for. >> light drizzle passing through adhering on surfaces. sidewalks on the icy side. you know what i say walk like a penguin. you shuffle and that's the way

to get around. >> looks crazy but it works. >> if you have a tuxedo on -- >> i'm going to get rick. >> as we look at double scan live radar out there we can see some of that light mixed precipitation to the south and north and west of philadelphia anywhere where you see the blue which is really encompassing much of those northwestern suburbs is a little bit of sleet mixing in with what looks like rain when you're seeing it fall but it adheres on contact because of temperatures below or at freezing. up to allentown trying to mix with a couple wet snowflakes as the temperature is dropping a little more there throughout entire column of the atmosphere. the reason why we're seeing the sleet and freezing rain is cause the air above is really warm supporting liquid. then at the surface temperatures are below freezing. wilmington woodbury salem even down here you see some spotty areas of some of that light freezing drizzle. as we look at the almanac for today we hit a high of

37 degrees. if you look at the record low back in 1934 of 11 degrees below zero, that is the all time coldest temperature ever recorded in philadelphia's history on today's date. 37 or 27 i should say in trenton, 25 allentown, 31 reading, 31 in millville so most locations at this point are below the freezing number and again we have some of the scattered precipitation that will continue to migrate through the area overnight tonight into the wee hours of tomorrow morning. future tracker at 10:30 tonight not a lot around. again, it's very spotty but anything that does fall again will turn icy on nontreated surfaces. most of the major roadways should fare well because the precipitation is so light and the roads are treated. tomorrow morning even some leftover light freezing rain in southern parts of our viewing area. then as we go to the north and west, this is our thursday system that could dr. a few snow showers a our way. right now near billings montana as you head towards

enough icy spots to make them treacherous. in fact, the roads aren't the only things that are icy. motorists in yardley found ice coating their cars as well. as for our immediate future, let's check double scan radar and meteorologist cecily tynan at the big board. cecily. >> and jim, storm tracker 6 live double scan showing that it's not over quite yet. we have some pockets of some light freezing rain south of philadelphia. the steadiest right now is northern chester county, parts of berks and lancaster county. that's all moving to the east. so s-the national weather service has posted winter weather advisories overnight north of philadelphia they expire at midnight but philadelphia and areas to the south the winter weather advisories are in effect until 6 o'clock tomorrow morning. so, this could cause some more problems for the start of the morning commute. the problem the temperatures. the precipitation is light but with temperatures below freezing across most our viewing area, as soon as it hits the untreated surfaces it creates a glaze and
