♪ >> "action news," delaware valley's leading news program with jim gardner. know this, our company company -- coalitigation is strong and we will succeed. >> and words from president obama as he disclosed as he asked congress to formally authorize military action against isis. obama assured this will not mean a ground war for u.s. troops but some skeptics in washington aren't so sure. it is wednesday night. the big story on "action news" tonight is it a request for war powers against the islamic state. many democrats think it goes too far, while some republicans think it doesn't go far enough. live at the big board tonight, "action news" reporter has the full story. >> and jim, the president's resolution limits the potential war to three years. after that timeframe the

resolution would have to be renewed. while the plan doesn't call for an all-out ground war it could deploy special forces at a later time in very limited circumstances. president obama's proposal for the war on isis opens the door to more than just air strikes. >> we're on offensive and they are on the defensive and will lose. >> and charging isis with the death of american host averages including the most recent victim, kayla mueller. if left unchecked, he warns isis proposes a threat to the u.s. homeland. while the president says this battle won't be a flashback to the wars in iraq and afghanistan which involved hundreds of thousands of troops the authorization does seek ground forces for rescue operations. missions to kill isis leaders, intelligence collection and air strikes.

speaker john boehner says he hasn't seen the details of the strategy, but believes the mission against isis will be accomplished. >> i am going to make sure the president has all of the tools available in order to win this fight. >> in the meantime on the hill the president's fellow democrats are nervous about the proposal's language, particularly "enduring combat." >> the language pertaining to ground troops which is very broad very ambiguous. none of us really know what "enduring offensive combat operations" really means. >> i am concerned about the vagueness of the ground troop language. >> the white house says the language in the resolution is vague on purpose. it says the commander in chief needs the flexibility to respond to what may become a chaotic military conflict for the resolution to be approved it still has to go through congressional hearings and a floor debate. a final vote on the authorization may not come until the spring. ♪♪

thank you. we have breaking news. cbs news and "60 minutes" correspondent bob simon was killed in a car crash tonight in new york city. it happened on 12th avenue and 30th street when a towncar simon was a passenger in crashed into another vehicle. simon and the driver were taken to the hospital where simon was pronounced dead. simon's last broadcast was this past sunday when he reported on the movie "selma". his career expand 50 years. bob simon was 73. a west philadelphia resident is being treated for serious burns suffered in a fire tonight. the victim is a man in his mid to late 40s. he suffered second-degree burns to his hands, face and legs. the blaze broke out on the 500 block of north simpson street at 7:00. so far, no word yet on what caused the fire. a verdict has come back in the murder of a rite-aid store manager in chester, and that verdict is guilty for all three defendants. it took the delaware country

jury less than two hours to convict 24 year old rita pultro who the prosecutors say fired the fatal shot at jason mcclay in september of 2013. david wiggins was convicted of second-degree murder as was tariq mahmud a former loss prevention officer at rite-aid who prosecutors say helped provide inside information. >> it is sweet and sour. it's -- like mort said justice has been served, but there are no winners and there are no losers. everybody lost something. >> the victim wasn't even supposed to be working the night he was killed. after completing his day shift, mcclay volunteered to work a double to cover for someone else. authorities say a serial robbery suspect is facing an extended stay behind bars. charged tonight with six hotel hold-ups many of the crimes were caught on surveillance camera during the spree in late

december. they say they were clustered near the airport in philadelphia and delaware county and the motor lodge on city avenue was also hit. philadelphia's major crimes fugitive task force arrested 39 year old george merriweather. and they have a man in custody who they say beat and sult assaulted a woman on a septa spot monday. reginald green led a woman to a secluded area. the jefferson station concourse after she asked for directions. they say green has 11 prior arrests. a veteran from the war in afghanistan has been having more than his share of trouble with a philadelphia convenience store. he is hoping the wrongs done against him are now being made right. kicked out of the 7-eleven not once but twice. all because of his service dog. 26 year old miguel olivero goes so does bailey. the art institute of philadelphia student is it a war veteran who served in afghanistan twice. bailey is his service dog who helps with his ptsd. >> she has been with me since october and she is my best friend. she does her job amazing. every time without fail. >> she was by his side two weeks ago when olivero says he had a rude encounter at the 7-eleven at 22 hnd and-- 22nd and market streets. telling olivero no dogs allow. and he filed a complaint and was told the problem would be resolved. this morning it happened again. >> i was shocked and appalled because i had spoken to the field consultant for 7-eleven corporate a week prior and he said had this problem won't happen again. >> we went looking for answers in the 7-eleven.

news." >> thank you, kenneth. the deal to stel the former revel casino fell apart this morning and happening next is it anything but clear. a bankruptcy judge refused to extend the closing deadline for the developer and his $95 million deal came off the table. a judge will rule if he gets his $10 million deposit back. revel officials say they are ready to find a new buyer saying they have zero confidence in him to close. and another round of bidding could bring a lower price. pennsylvania governor tom wolf wants to tap natural gas drilling to help the state's public schools. he kicked off the state-wide tour today at the elementary school in thorndaily chester county. and they are talking driller generating as much as $1 billion a year. the lion share as he said earmarked for schools. the g.o.p.-controlled state legislature would have to approve any new taxes. drillers are arguing that it

would discourage investment and job creation. authorities say there could be hundreds of potential victims scammed by a man who said he could cut their mortgage payments in half. that man, 40 year old daniel sheehan is behind bars. now charged with defrauding eight people in gloucester township, new jersey. sources tell "action news" the searchs his home turned up more than 200 miles of people who may have been victims. many of them are philadelphia police officers. a little league baseball scanned many stripped the jackie robinson west team of chicago from the national title. little league baseball governing body ruled the team officials, the chicago team officials poached player from nearby suburban leagues by falsifying the team's boundaries. at a news conference reverend jesse jackson if it was about boundaries or race. and they eliminated the taney dragons from the world series and the title now goes to the las vegas team that lost in the

>> we have a follow-up to a story we first brought you last night. about the batch of discarded documents containing personal information found scattered around grays ferry in philadelphia. many of those records can be traced back to philadelphia common police court. a spokesperson for the court tells "action news" there are just too many documents to shred. the documents are supposed to be picked up by the sanitation department but somehow became trapped in the wheel well of a truck and dislodged. judge kevin docherty said he was
