good afternoon, the big story on "action news" this noon is the cleanup from a winter storm. the snow has moved out and it came at a really bad time and turned the morning commute into a slow and slushy mess. >> easy for you to say. >> thousands of children were kept home from school and we found some of them taking full advantage of them, some made a few bucks doing their neighbor's shoveling work and some braved the cold to clear the sidewalks and driveways here in millville, new jersey, more than 120 flights out of philadelphia international airport were canceled today. the snow and ice caused a ground stoppage for a short time. but flights are still experiencing residual delays. we have live team coverage covering our latest blast of winter. lets get the latest from

meteorologist david murphy at the big board. >> this one did behave itself pretty well. right now stormtracker 6 live double scan shows you the last of the snowflakes are east of trenton and they are not amounting to much. this is what it looked like at 9:00 when the lighter snow showers began to move in and then closer to 11 and midnight it came in and it went until this morning. we were on this morning at 4:00 to talk about this, and then it started to move off to the east and now we are pretty much finished the snow, in pennsylvania we got the 3 to 6 inch ratio or range we were talking about. philadelphia 3.7 inches abington 5 and 4.5 in chadds ford and king of prussia 4 inches and closer to the lehigh valley, you stopped at 3 and some spots less than that.

cape may 7 inches 6.4 in haddon heights and 4 in vineland and williamstown 3.5 inches, and one more to show you that includes delaware i'll start with mcguire, 6.5, but brandywine, 6.5 inches and 4.5 in wilmington and newcastle 2.5 inches. pretty much all of them in the 3 to 6 inch portion of the region. 26 degrees and the windchills make it feel worse than that. when we come back we'll talk about a little more possible snow tomorrow and an arctic blast on the way. >> thank you. as david mentioned the jersey shore had some of the highest snowfall totals this is a live look at cape may new jersey where several inches are covering the ground and along the coastline the water is

frozen over. lets switch live to annie mccormick, she is checking out the snow conditions in wildwood this morning. >> reporter: hey, we are not far from cape may we got a lot of snow in wildwood we are trading beach balls from snowballs and there are adults and kids having fun on this snow day too. ted is shoveling his way to summer outside of his wildwood crest home. >> we moved down here because we were told it never snows here. before breakfast he will shovel out elderly neighbors too. and the kids took advantage of the snow days. >> i have two high schoolers and one in college and one in gram mer school and everybody is home. >> because of the snow? >> yes because of the snow. >> what do you think about the snow here? >> i'm dispointed. i like snow. >> parts of the jersey shore got

challenging road conditions that many commuter his to deal with this morning. >> hi rick, getting around this morning was a problem, we see blacktop on delaware avenue earlier today we didn't get a lot of snow but it was a stubborn snow to get off the road and that prompted the closing of schools and the closing of state and government offices all over the state of delaware. >> snow began overnight before sun up plow trucks were hard at work where conditions were poor. >> i came over the bridges it's horrible, slick out there. slush and an icy layer. >> even major roads were dicey this woman traveled on i-95 at 25 miles per hour, icy slush remained on roads as the sun came up the city and state closed offices today and del/dot predicted the sun to help.

the scene trying to figure out what caused the derailment or if weather was a factor. >> i have never seen anything like this in my life. it seems surreal on a snowy afternoon, towering flames exploding into the western sky. >> the mushroom cloud scared me and the heat off of it made me sweat. >> the thousands of pounds of crude oil burned for hours people watched from hire window after a home caught on fire moments before a man escaped. >> right after he got out of house the house exploded and the train exploded. >> the csx train was passing through the small town of mount carbon, southeast of the charleston, west virginia when in the middle of a snow storm two dozen of the 200 tank cars

jumped the rails. >> respond to a train on fire involving train cars and a house. >> one person was taken to the hop for smoke inhalation, the 200 or so residents of the small community were taken to the high school and are waiting for word that it is safe to return home. >> and one concern now is the water supply after reports that one of those tank cars plunged into a nearby river spilling crude oil. investigators are looking into the potential environmental impact of that. marcy gonzales channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. those trains were carrying oil that is the same form of highly explosive oil that wendy saltzman alerted you to earlier this month in a special investigation.

just to the east of trenton, a little dark gray thark is nothing, as we take a look outside, we are live aboard chopper 6 and chopper out over the schuylkill river by the water works and the art museum all the snow is piled up on the grown and some piled up on the ice that is still floating on the river and boy a wintry scene live from the chopper and that looks the way it feels out there. winds are out of the northwest at 5 miles per hour, 22 in philadelphia and 22 in wilmington and 25 in millville. everybody is sharing the 20s and lancaster, still in the teens and windchills in the teens across the region and 16 in philadelphia right now, despite a light wind definitely a day to put on the extra gear. and there is the snow popping through down south of us most of it is centered to the south and we got clipped with the

northern part of the system and it put down 3 to 6 inches of snow in the central portion of the region sun is breaking out from the clouds in most of the region and it's still cold and 34 is the high in atlantic city, sunny breaks later in the day it's also chilly and breezy there by the water. 30 degrees is your high in philadelphia, a mix of clouds and sun and still cold out there and winds running 7 to 14 miles per hour just enough to put the extra nip in the area, colder again with the clouds beginning to break up and the winds are falling a bit and winds are dipping, we are down to 13 tomorrow morning in philadelphia and some suburbs in the upper single digits and for the evening commute, clouds mix with sunny breaks and cold and 25 by 5:30. a sudden drop there all the way down to 22 and going well below

that. the clouds are getting thicker, future tracker 6 marching to 6:00, there is going to be an arctic boundary building in and the big issue with that is the arctic air and the possibility of a snow shower popping up and that extends into the evening and some of these could move all the way down to the shore where these hit they could be a snow squall that would put down a coating or a bit more than that and reduce visibility. if you get caught in this you'll want to slow it down. by 4:00, 4:30 in the morning it's all gone. frigid air returns and another batch of the arctic stuff coming down from the great lakes and canada, the seven day shows a high of 30 the rest of the way ain snow shower possible in the day tomorrow and a high of 32 and a better chance of that in the evening. on thursday behind the front
