coldest one yet. it is friday afternoon. i'm shirleen allicott. >> and i'm brian taff. the big story on "action news" today is the frigid forecast that's broken records across the region and now the new threat of snow this week. we are in pennsylvania, delaware and new jersey this afternoon to bring you the latest on this dangerous weather. but we begin as we have so often lately with adam joseph live at the big board. hey, adam. >> yeah, all week unfortunately it's been about the brutal cold. now it's talking about the snow sleet, freezing rain for the weekend and this morning in philadelphia it was almost a record. we missed the by 1 degree. we dropped to two. that record was one back in 1979 but even at 2 degrees this morning, it was the coldest temperature philadelphia has felt since 1994 so it's been two decades since we have been this cold. other numbers were shattered in trenton wilmington and dover, all new records there. between zero and 2 degrees. allentown we missed the record by 1 degree. it was one below zero this

morning in atlantic city airport coming in at 1 degree. if you were out early this morning you felt that sting on your face if you did not cover exposed skin. felt like 21 below in allentown, 22 below in reading, 20 below or so throughout the state of delaware 17 below in philadelphia and at the shore 19 below zero. wind chills have recovered but not all that much. we're still sitting near zero if not just a couple degrees above that but the winds will relax overnight tonight but we are expecting more record cold temperatures by tomorrow morning. we're also tracking this warm front to the south. , see precipitation breaking out. even atlanta expecting up to an inch of snow has this pushes to the north and east and in fact winter storm watches and advisories have been posted for our entire viewing area for the day on saturday as snow will break out first. then it changes to sleet freezing rain and ah eventually rain, so a big mess on our hands for saturday into sunday morning. brian, when i come back we'll

talk about the timing of when this pushes in and how much snow you're going to see. it could be the biggest snowfall many of us have seen so far this winter scenesy season. >> thanks very much. water can be a real problem when the thermometer gets this low and that's the case in one philadelphia neighborhood where the streets today looked more like an ice rink. david henry now live in overbrook park and david's got the latest from there. >> reporter: robert fletcher wasn't going anywhere as he tried to get to work this morning. his car was hopelessly stuck ice. >> this water been running for a few days man. so this is what happened. each day the ice get built up higher and higher. >> reporter: the ice is at least 6-inches thick and it may take until spring to melt it. it may also take that long for the rest of us to thaw out. people ventured outside today only if they had to. >> it's freezing out here.

doing out here. >> i'mi'm going to see my grandmom see how she's doing. >> reporter: very important to check with elderly neighbors and relatives. this situation isn't going to be resolved any time soon it looks like. these cars on 76 street are frozen solid in the ice. we checked with the water department about that water flowing down the alley back here and they say that is the problem of the homeowner it's a private issue, the homeowner has to get that water fixed and they've got much bigger emergencies they're racing to over the city. live in overbrook park, david henry, channel6 "action news." brian. >> all right, david, thanks as always. from our delaware news room today amazing the heat is out again at a new castle county apartment flex and now management says it was no accident this time. we have been following the saga at the creeks at marshalton on nelson road. residents spent days without heat this week because of a burst pipe there. it was just restored yesterday but hours later someone stole copper pipes from that property and

that, of course, knocked out the boiler that heats three buildings leaving people in the frigid temperatures once again. the apartment manager thinks a former employee is sabotaging the complex. that claim is still under investigation right now but in the meantime, county officials have been stepping in. >> it doesn't sound to me like the management team is doing a very good job and that's unacceptable in our county in this day and age. >> everybody should have heat and a warm place and i'll take that responsibility. >> now officials say the heat should be back on by tonight but if that is not the case, residents do have a number to call to make arrangements for a different warm place to stay. >> from our new jersey news room, a local high school had to cancel classes after it lost heat. the action cam was at camden high school where students went home around 1 o'clock this afternoon. administrators are still trying to figure out if they'll have school on monday and that is just one of the cold related problems we've seen out there today. new jersey correspondent nora

muchanic continues our team coverage. she is live in trenton. >> reporter: nora. >> reporter: hi, shirleen. we set a record today in trenton but it's not the kind of record you really want. it is wicked out. take a look at the folks waiting for the river line down there. the combination of the wind on top of the bitter cold temperatures, it will stop you in your tracks but you don't really want to do that because if you stay in one spot too long, you'll freeze. >> just to come out its freezing. i mean, it's brutal. i ain't felt nothing like this in my life. >> reporter: that may be because today was a record breaker for the capitol city. 0 degrees and that's not even counting the wind chill. >> it's just blistering cold. i came down here from bellevue avenue and i was so happy when the bank opened up, it's just freezing out here. >> reporter: waiting for the bus on state street was no picnic. >> oh, i bundles up. i don't play. got on long john thermals, thermal socks, everything. >> reporter: and you still feel the cold. >> you still feel it. >> reporter: the subzero temperatures contributed to

water leak on south olden avenue in trenton that flooded the gutter and iced up the intersection at farragut avenue. >> it freezes up, caused a lot of problems. it leaks everywhere. >> reporter: and as you would expect working outside in these brutal temperatures for any length of time is difficult. >> but at nighttime is when it gets real bad. if you're working in the middle of the night that's when it's really bad out but just layers of clothing. >> it's tough nd the water is freezing right on contact. >> reporter: not a good day. >> no, you it is not a good day. >> reporter: same thing for mailman john gold teen who says he's glad to keep moving as he delivers his route. >> it's unbearable. i got on three pair of everything day. the only way you can stay outside is for any length of time is to have planned ahead and dressed in layers. are you warm enough in all your gear. >> oh, yes i've got two pairs of pants, three sweatshirts on, i'm ready for it. >> reporter: back live now you're looking at the platform

in the deadly stabbing involving members of rapper nicki minaj's touring team. they say they have one person in custody right now. they are still looking for two others. the stabbing happened in east mount airy early wednesday morning. "action news" reporter vernon odom will have more on the arrest and what police say led up to the killing in a live report coming up this afternoon at 4:30. atlantic county doctor is accused of abusing up to 40 patients during medical exams. dr. saad jaffrey was originally arrested on three counts of criminal contact if december. since then dozens of additional people have come forward telling police they, too, were victims at jaffrey's premiere neurology office in egg harbor township. he was arrested again yesterday on new charges. >> in just a few hours students at penn state university will start dancing and they won't stop for 46 hours. it is the annual thon to benefit children battling cancer. chad pradelli is live in state

college. chad, this is a remarkable event to just keeps on getting bigger and bigger. >> reporter: yes, it is, shirleen. in a little over an hour 700 dancers will walk in at the bryce jordan center and they will begin dancing and standing for 46 straight hours. behind me you see those kids right there. well, those are the captains. those are the ones that are going to be supporting those dancers but the real inspiration here is the kids. you often hear about ftk that's for the kids because the money raised here is for pediatric cancer and the four diamonds fund at penn state hershey hospital. this year's theme empower the dreamers. >> i never would have thought like leaving behind penn state this year thon would be the biggest part of my year but it is. >> the money thon raised directly impacts a hundred families starting a cancer journey and any given year about 500 that are continuing their journey. >> ♪♪ >> reporter: so, this will all begin at 6:00 p.m.

shirleen. this is the red carpet of all red carpets. if you look really closely you can see it under these protective layers of plastic right here. of course they have to keep it pristine for sunday when the biggest names in hollywood will walk down this red carpet and make their way into the dolby theater which is right behind me. of course, fans from all across the world will be in these prime seats here up in the bleachers cheering them on as they make their way down. of course we've got a really good seat for you as well and so do media outlets from across the world. you mentioned the crews that have been working really hard to set up this event. they have been busy all through the night setting up the red carpet and also putting out life sized oscar statues to adorn this entire area. it just looks gorgeous. speaking of the red carpet some fun facts. takes them two days to roll it out. there are 16,500 feet of red carpet. so i wondered when did the red carpet actually make its

a suite and then hang out with the whole flyers gang. what a cool young kid and a bunch of great guys for giving him that experience. >> love that. as we told you earlier there is snow on the way for this weekend and as if this couldn't be any worse -- >> yeah, and not just a little bit of snow either. meteorologist adam joseph standing by with the latest call from accuweather adam. >> we'll get a few inchs in many locations. then we'll have a brief period of ice on top of the snow before it changes to rain. a mess this weekend. we're clear for now and tonight and first thing tomorrow morning but there you see the warm front and some of the moisture gathering down to the south and this will expand in real estate and grow as it heads to the north and east. temperature-wise still pretty brutal out there right now. 17 in philadelphia, 16 trenton, 14 reading and allentown, wildwood right now 16 degrees. but we still have a light breeze out there so it feels like zero in allentown reading as well as lancaster four philadelphia. one lonely degree down towards wildwood and cape may and

dover also just 1 degree. satellite and radar the one good thing about arctic air is it holds very little moisture, so you can see the void of cloud cover across our region, some is building in the western part of the ohio valley but that won't make it in time for tonight so it's another clear night with more records but less wind. we could drop to that record in trenton of three, two below in allentown, six in wilmington and a record of three in atlantic city. seven for philadelphia and reading expecting zero by tomorrow morning. future tracker will show that precipitation building. where you see the purple, that is the snow. the blue, that's the mix. the green is the rain. and notice again how it kind of grows here by 1 o'clock tomorrow afternoon in those western suburbs. that's when it starts to snow in pennsylvania, overspreads early afternoon into new jersey and delaware. we're starting to see that mix. by 6 o'clock tomorrow night to the south, heavy snow philadelphia to the north and then by midnight we'll see it flip to rain pretty much

everywhere with the exception of the lehigh valley where they will hold onto a little bit of sleet and freezing rain a little longer. so here's the time line. 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., that's when it begins as all snow no matter where you are. three phenomenon 3:00 a.m. into sunday morning that's the heaviest snow, ice and rain as it transitions and early on sunday morning 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. it ends as rain showers even up in the lehigh valley. so, in the far southern zones dover millville atlantic city one to 2-inches before that changeover. for the greater wilmington philadelphia, trenton location, even those northwestern suburbs of philadelphia, two to 4-inches to remind you philadelphia's biggest snow this season is 3-pointer 7-inches so we could come close if not break that and then far to the north and west, close to the lehigh valley northern bucks and montgomery county, four to 6-inches of that wet snow with a little bit of rain at the end. your four day at 4:00 that afternoon and evening snow breaking up, 33 degrees. a leftover morning rain shower

>> ♪♪ >> we are back with some breaking news right now out of west philadelphia. chopper 6 live over the 4900 block of chestnut street where crews are on the scene of a -- of what was reported to us as a fire in a two story structure. , see the ladder over the roof of that structure right now. from this vantage point it would appear that crews have a pretty good handle on this but we did get reports that one person was trapped on the second story of this home there and we've not gotten confirmation that were person was freed just yet. again, fire crews on the scene of what was a fire here in the 4900 block of chestnut street in west philadelphia. we'll keep you posted on the status of the person trapped inside that building.

>> new jersey u.s. senators asking for a crackdown on possible insurance fraud that followed hurricane sandy. bob menendez and cory booker asked the attorney general to look into the problem. they say insurers have tried to reduce flood damage payouts after sandy hit in october of 2012. in november, a judge in long island ordered insurers to produce information that could help reveal whether contractors edited damage reports. menendez and booker say the situation in new jersey is similar enough to warrant its own investigation. >> and still ahead on "action news" at 4:00 today just because he's not coaching doesn't mean he can't yell at people. why bobby knight flew off the handle at a temple game. >> ♪♪

records shattered in the tri-state area. >> yeah, trenton's 0-degree morning with a negative 20-degree wind chill and wilmington's 2-degree with a 21 wind chill both setting new lows. not to be outdone philadelphia and atlantic city get honorable mentions with their low temperatures today and by the way, they had wind chills between negative 17 and 19 and mother nature is going to keep piling it on with another round of snow this weekend. >> mercilessly. >> it has been a long week. we started monday with wind chills between 17 to 20 degrees below z if you take a look at the wind chill it has improved some this afternoon at 4 degrees but that's still mighty cold. four in cincinnati, feels like four below in chicago. jacksonville and atlanta feels like it is in the 30's with raleigh at 24 degrees. the problem with arctic air --

the good side of it you got bright sunshine. the bad side, when it moves out with a warm front all that warm air that will be trying to flood in overrides that existing arctic iran you start to ring out the moisture in the atmosphere with moisture and you can see it's breaking out nashville and atlanta where it will be snowing this evening. that far south. that will head to the north and east, collide with that arctic air so we have winter storm watches for philadelphia all the way up to the lehigh valley and the poconos where several inches of snow will fall before a mix and an advisory for southern new jersey and delaware, less snow will fall here. they'll get some but it will be a quicker transition to some of that that sleet freezing rain and eventually rain. for the i-95 metro area, wilmington philadelphia and trenton, all the forecast models pretty good agreement between about two and 4-inches, that is our forecast and if you take a look at the lehigh valley where the cold air is going to last longer, our forecast up north, four to 6-inches and you can see the models go anywhere from about

"action news" reporter vernon odom live at police headquarters in center city with details on this. vernon, what can you tell us. >> reporter: one member that of group, one suspect is being held, two more are being sought. police say they have the names of all involved in this

murderous brawl that saw road text of the musical artist get attacked outside a stenton avenue bar and grille early wednesday morning. >> we've identified all participants on both sides and arrest is imminent on this murder. >> reporter: outside this east mount airy bar in the wee hours of wednesday morning the road manager of hip hop star nicki minaj was killed by a knife wielding adversary during a dispute that started a barmaid. 29-year-old devon picket from new york city was stabbed to death, his friend eric parker of philadelphia was critically injured in the attack. picket was in town for rehearsals for minaj's upcoming tore of europe. police have one person of interest in custody and are on the verge of busting to more. >> both of the parties both new a female that worked at the bar and the argument sended -- centered around her. >> reporter: eric parker remains in critical condition. all three targets of this investigation are from philadelphia reason known to police because of their past

brushes with the law. >> we have one of the individuals that we'll call a person of interest upstairs in the homicide unit now. two others we've identified and i'm hopeful we'll have a warrant for them very soon. >> reporter: police at this hour are in the process of getting those warrants. they're not releasing the names of any of the men they want, a the least so far. live at police headquarters in center city, vernon odom, channel6 "action news." >> all right, vernon, thank you. there are also new developments today in the case of a limousine driver shot to death in olney last night. philadelphia police now tell "action news" the murder was not random and not prelate to do a robbery. they say the victim had some type of confrontation with two pedestrians near west tabor tabor road and north mascher street. police say the bullet severed a main artery. investigators are searching for video hoping to identify the gunmen. >> it didn't take long for police to arrest a suspected bank rob intercenter city

today. chopper 6 hd was over the ben franklin parkway as officers handcuffed a man accused of robbing the susquehanna bank near 18th and walnut. he only made eight few blocks before police caught up with him. officers were able to recover the cash. the suspect allegedly stole. officials have not yet released his name or information about any charges filed. a taxi driver was rescued from his tab this morning after a head-on collision with a suspected drunk driver in west philadelphia. police say an suv driver was under the influence when the vehicle crashed into the taxi on south 63rd street. the roof was torn from the top of the taxi and the cab driver was trapped. medics pulled him out of the wreckage and took him to the hospital where he is in critical condition. the suv driver is facing a number of charges including dui. >> officials in delaware county have a strong message today for local college students trying to get a fake i.d. and you'll have to answer to the police. spot that would normally be congested on a friday afternoon so with this lane out of commission and with all the activity associated with the crash things are extra jammed up as you come out of the city. i think i would stick with the river drives, the mlk or kelly instead of the westbound schuylkill because we have another accident as well westbound near girard partially sticking out into the right lane. so a-pair of problems on 76. luckily our crash on 95 northbound approaching penn's landing has cleared out. so, that's some good news. but we still have that wreck in kensington involving the pedestrian along jean near tioga and the one in holmesburg involving the bus at state and rhawn. it's been an afternoon of a lost accidents, water main breaks disabled vehicles. here's a crash involving a fire truck in upper dublin along fort washington avenue. stick with pine town road. on 202 southbound south of west chester crash just cleared but you can see we're still jammed in this area. we'll check it again shirleen coming up in the 5 o'clock hour. >> sounds g thank you, matt. some of the greatest minds in the tri-state region are joining forces in center city philadelphia.

the 2015 delaware valley engineers week combines professionals in the field with the future generation. local college and high school students presented their original innovations. drexel university professor doctor was named delaware valley engineer of the year. elementary school students at saint philip and james school got a vivid history lesson today. volunteers from valley forge park stopped by to show the students what it was like to live during colonial times. they demonstrated early medical procedures, how home colors were done and the students got to participate in perhaps the coolest aspect of the visit getting to try on the clothing of the time period. >> hm. >> looking good. >> fancy hats. >> still ahead from free water ice to free hockey lessons, we are celebrating the deep freeze with freebies. >> and we'll introduce you to the mother of five who says she has a simple message for all those yo-yo dieters out there. she says i'm happier being fat than when i was thin. and alicia vitarelli live

adam joseph tracking the arrival of snow tomorrow and i believe he said we can expect several inches here. >> several inches before more arctic air by next week so -- i haven't said one good thing all week. >> you're working hard. >> he is working hard. >> yeah, another day tomorrow on tap. as we take a look right now double scan live radar around the region lots of sunshine with this arctic air. looks nice when you're looking inside out. the minute you step outside is when you get whacked by that cold air. the high today in philadelphia just 18 degrees. this is the third time this week high temperatures have only topped off into the teens. our normal high 45 degrees. that would feel almost summer-like at this point. the record 70 and that low of 2 degrees was 1 degree shy of the record set back in 1979. but even that two this morning, it's the first time in over two decades we have been that cold in philadelphia. five in trenton right now is your wind chill, zero for reading, allentown lancaster one in dover and atlantic city right now feels like

2 degrees. again, there's that arctic air with all of its sunshine but notice the clouds how they form right off the coastline. that's that cold air. when that bumps over the relatively warmer waters of the atlantic you condense the air and you get that cloud cover to form so they're called cold air cumulus that you're seeing over the open waters of the atlantic. but more records for tonight into tomorrow morning. philadelphia close to the record of six by tomorrow morning. allentown should break its record of zero. we're expecting two below a broken record by tomorrow morning in trenton of three the same for wilmington at six and atlantic city at the airport tying the old record of 3 degrees. moisture right now is breaking out over the tennessee valley. atlanta even some snow showers predicting about a coating to an inch of snow for atlanta this evening and overnight. that snow will start falling in the western edge of lancaster, reading and allentown around noontime tomorrow. then it pushes over that i-95 corridor. by about 1:00 to 3 o'clock in the afternoon turning steadier

and heavier in these dark blues here just south and west of wilmington. and as we get into the evening hours of 6:30, this is when the precipitation will be falling pretty heavily still snow wilmington to the north. there it is, mixing with sleet and freezing rain to the south and by 9:30, it starts to try to change to rain in philadelphia. still mixing to the north and west. it could be a period of some sleet and freezing rain there. and notice how the bay tries to capture some of that sleet longer. it's because the models thinking the bay is actually frozen so this colder air there but no matter what it is rain even on the brink of the lehigh valley by midnight tomorrow a-few rain showers sunday morning but the sun returns to salvage the second half of the weekend. down to the south millville atlantic city and dover 1 to 2 inches and this is going to be a very heavy wet snow, not that light fluffy snow. two to four for wilmington, philadelphia trenton, the heart of the delaware valley. and then bump north of the pennsylvania turnpike northern montgomery bucks county, lehigh valley, reading we're expecting four to 6-inches of
