digits but it did not stop these dedicated people from their daily run and bike ride along kelly drive in philadelphia. >> and check this out it's so cold the battleship u.s.s. new jersey surrounded by ice. chopper 6hd flew over the delaware river today and found the frozen shot of the giant ship. friday night the big story on "action news" is the record cold temperatures and more snow coming tomorrow. >> we have team coverage tonight. let's begin with meteorologist melissa magee at the "action news" big board with the latest from accuweather. hey, melissa. >> hi, rick, monica. we definitely had a frigid start on our friday and almost a record here in philadelphia. the morning low temperature dropped down to 2 degrees. that's 1 degree shy of the record of one set back in 1979. so, we didn't make a record this morning but still very cold. the coldest morning we've seen since january 20th of 1994. we did however hit some records across the delaware and lehigh valleys. trenton your record morning temperature zero, two for both

wilmington and dover so these are the locations where we had record-low temperatures this morning. allentown minus one and 1 degree at the airport there in atlantic city. this is what you felt, however, when you stepped outside early this morning. wind chills below zero, 34 degrees below zero this morning in the poconos, 17 below in philadelphia, fifteen below in wildwood and 20 degrees below zero in trenton. now, early this afternoon and early this evening we do have a bit of a recovery. it feels like 4 degrees currently in philadelphia from where we were earlier today. zero in the poconos, wind chill currently in wildwood of three. same thing in dover. we are tracking some changes just in time for the start our weekend. storm tracker 6 live double scan radar showing you snow breaking out in atlanta, same thing nashville tennessee so there's an area of low pressure. the low is over texas but this will work its way from a southwest to northeast direction as early as overnight tonight and into the day on saturday. so, winter storm watch for philadelphia, areas to the north and west and advisory for the purple shaded counties as we are tracking snow change testifying sleet, ice and a

gradual changeover to rain. we'll talk about the details and expected snowfall, rickey rick, with the accuweather forecast. >> all right melissa. thank you. let's switch now to "action news" reporter david henry live in overbrook where residents continue to deal with a big ice problem there. >> reporter: yeah, the cold weather out here is causing all sorts of problems not the least of which is a situation we've got here in overbrook park. i could show you some frozen cars but there's a truck blocking the view but look up this alley behind me. you see that? that is a glacier of ice caused by a leak coming from an unoccupied house for days. the cold has become invented and down right dangerously. >> it's super cold out here, very cold reporter: what are you doing out here. >> i'm about to go see my grandmom see how she's doing. >> reporter: a won't reason to be outside today. the streets of center city were just about deserted as others stayed inside as long as they could. when they did venture out they tried to get where they're going as quickly as possible

with as many layers as possible. >> i'm wearing lots of layers today. it's helping. >> reporter: and sunshine is helping a little bit. >> a little bit. i mean, my face is cold but i'm good otherwise. >> reporter: it was a day for ear muffs on the ear buds. are you listening to bob marley right now. >> i am not. >> reporter: something warm, though right. >> no, unfortunately not. >> reporter: not frozen. >> no, not frozen. i am frozen but i'm not listening to frozen. >> reporter: some have learned better than others to cope with this frozen landscape. >> i'm used to this weather because i've boone doing it for so many years i'm used to it now. >> reporter: and you got a coat that you can house a small family in apparently. >> could fit like maybe one or two people in here, yes. >> reporter: the cold weather caused a real mess in the alley way behind the 7500 block of brookhaven road in overbrook park. robert fletcher was going nowhere as he tried to get to work this morning. his car was stuck in about 6-inches of solid ice.

the problem is an unoccupied neighboring house a water pipe has been leaking from the house sending a freezing river of ice down the entire lender of the alley way. >> this water be running like for a few days now man. so this is what happened. each day the ice get built up higher and higher. >> reporter: and the problem extends well beyond the alley way. the water has flowed down 76th street trapping cars in ice out here. the philadelphia water department says it's nothing they can do. they can't help with this because the problem belongs to the homeowner. it's up to the homeowner to get that leaking pipe fixed. hopefully these folks might get some relief if the street department comes along and bumps a load of salt on all of this. live in overbrook park, david henry channel6 "action news." monica. >> thank you david. you can share the wintry conditions in your area with the 6abc storm tracker a use the report your weather feature to let us know what's happening in your hometown. you can submit photos of any snow and ice you see. the 6abc storm tracker app is

a free download for your mobile device. >> from our delaware news room the heat is out again at a new castle county apartment complex and management says it was no accident this time. possibly foul play. we've been following the heat issue at the creeks at marshalton since monday. residents spent days without heat this week because of empty boilers and broken pipes. repairs were made but then last night officials say someone stole the copper pipes from the property knocking out the boiler that heats three buildings. the apartment manager believes a former employee is to blame. we spoke to a county official. >> you don't want to condemn the whole thing and then you have a whole bunch of people without a place but it doesn't sound like the management team is doing a very good job and that's unacceptable. >> county leaders cited the apartment complex yesterday and threatened them also with fines. from no heat inside your home to being out in the freezing elements, both could

be dangerous to your health. it's important to know that the signs of serious conditions like frost bite and hypothermia. reporter and registered nurse ali gorman is at the "action news" big board with more. hi ali. >> hi, sharrie. some areas saw record cold temperatures with an average wind chill between minus 15 to minus 25. that means it only takes about 15 to 30 minutes for frost bite to set in if you have exposed skin. again, the cold can be very dangerous to your health. you have to take precautions. facing freezing cold temperatures today many people were moving quickly in the city limiting their time outside. >> pain, like your skin feels like all these little pins. >> reporter: that tingling feeling she describes plus numbness pain or skin color changes are early signs of frost bite. hypothermia can start with shivering. if it progresses, shivering stops, confusion drowsiness and slurred speech can set in. this is a medical emergency.

both frost bite and hypothermia are real health dangers. when temperatures dip close to the teens. so staying dry and bundling up is fifty eight today. >> how many layers are we talking here. >> four. >> reporter: stanley flier man tells me he doesn't mind the cold but he also takes the necessary precautions. >> double socks layers, layers and layers. >> reporter: he's got the right idea. you lose the most heat from your head and torso. but smaller areas such as fingers, toes, ears and nose typically suffer frost bite first. if you or your loved ones go outside, make sure they have layers, a hat scarf mittens and warm boots. lauren baxter and her son jacob aren't from philadelphia. they say the conditions here are a break for them. >> it's actually nice because we drove down from massachusetts yesterday and to see snow bank that is aren't 7 feet high is wonderful. >> reporter: now, everyone

can get frost bite or hypothermia but there are some groups who respect especially at risk. babies, because they can lose heat more quickly so even if you have them inside you want to make sure that they're kept warm. seniors also lose heat quickly. be sure to check on them. the mentally ill because they may not take the necessary precautions and people with heart disease. when it's so cold, your harder has to work harder to keep you warm so it can spark problems. the key is staying warm and dry. monica. >> all right, thank you ali. philadelphia police are still looking for a missing woman tonight. they are worried she might be out in the frigid cold. mildred rim was last seen wednesday night at her home in the city's wynnefield section. police say she has dementia and often what happens from home. she was last seen wearing a purple jacket, black pants and brown shoes. anyone with information is asked to call philadelphia police right away. >> a group of local students trying to get fake id's were busted because of a case of mistaken identity. radnor police say these fake

id's were sent from china to an 18-year-old named dean at a local college. however, that package was actually forwarded to one of the deans of the school. inside the school officials found several fake id's taped to the back of a picture frame which he then turned over to police. officials warned today a fake i.d. may seem harmless but it can bring much bigger legal problems. >> it can get a lot big area lot quicker. it's more than a young person holding onto a fake id card to get a beer in the middle of the night. >> police say all students involved are cooperating. so far no charges have been filed. >> time right now for a check of our "action news" traffic report friday night. >> friday finally here, matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center. how is the commute home looking tonight? thumbs up about the arrival of friday. >> oh, yeah. >> thumbs down about the friday evening commute as is so often the case, rick and mon today, but this afternoon again a bunch of accidents kind of getting in our way as we try and start this weekend. here on 95 southbound side you're moving really slowly coming down from academy through this point entering

the work zone at cottman down to approaching allegheny that's where there's a crash taking out the center lane. still have the wreck in home burg involving the buses at state and rhawn but you can get past that. there's a new one on the boulevard northbound side at c street in the inner drive. two crashes on the schuylkill expressway. here's the one approaching girard off to the side as is the one approaching the boulevard. all lanes opened but heavier westbound and eastbound as you head into the city. watching this crash involving a fire truck in upper dublin along fort washington avenue. stay on pine town road instead. and there's a wreck in doylestown along the 202 parkway near 611. its watch out for a crash in new castle 141 southbound at 95. we'll check it again rick and monica in the next half hour. >> see you then. much more ahead on "action news" at 5:00 tonight. there's a new way to find out if someone has been infected with ebola. why world health officials are

skversky live. pitchers and catchers on the field today. >> yes, they were. jonathan papelbon the phillies closer the way pap has talked the last few years, he said he didn't come here for this, he wants to play forwarn. you would think after saying all that of he would express his desire today to be traded and play for a winner again but that's not the case. believe it or not jonathan papelbon the phillies closer says the phillies can contends in 2015 even though team president pat gillick said in the off season he doesn't believe they'll be able to contend until 2017. since the phillies signed papelbon before the 2012 season the phillies have not made the playoffs. so, i asked the phils closer today whether or not he regrets coming here in the first place. >> i don't have any regrets at all coming here. i get to play in an intense

limits for those will be set according to age and gender. the advisors also recommend limiting caffeine to 400 milligrams a day. that's about four standard cups of coffee or just one starbucks brewed coffee. meantime the world health organization has approved the first ever quick test for ebola. the test which is made by an american company dramatically cuts the time it takes to determine whether someone is infected with the deadly virus. in trials, it correctly identified nine 2% of the patients with ebola and 85 percent of those not infected. gene based lab tests are more accurate but they can take between 12 and 24 hours. this new test is complete in just 15 minutes.

>> ♪♪ >> jab japanese air bag maker takata faces hefty fines in connection to its exploding air bags. today transportation secretary anthony fox announced the u.s. will fine takata $14,000 a day for failing to fully cooperate in a federal probe. takata fired back saying it has handed over two and a half million pages of documents to

federal officials. the company's air bag inflators can explode and shoot shrapnel at passengers. at least six people have been killed. >> high schoolers getting a jump start on their job search were on hand for an exciting presentation today in montgomery county. students from the afternoon program at norristown area high school visited at&t. the company presented a $30,000 check to show their continued support of the initiative. the job training program allows students to foster some of the skills they will need to work for companies like at&t one day. well the count down is on to the 87th annual academy awards on sunday. >> accuweather "action news" big board, melissa is here with more on tonight's cold and tomorrow's snow. >> yeah, that's right, monica. a whole lot going on over the next 24 to 28 hours. we'll be tracking a storm system moving in. before the storm arrives we have record cold to tell you about on the way tonight. we'll show you the picture outside sky hicks live hd spring mountain few skiers on the slopes there a few lone south jersey it is cold enough to do some skiing up in the mountains. temperatures outside in philadelphia 17 degrees after a high today of 18. 16 in wildwood. 14 for reading and lancaster but factor in notice winds that have been pretty constant today out of the west and northwest so the wind chill currently in allentown coming in at two. four in philadelphia, the single digits as well dover wildwood and atlantic city coming in with current wind chill readings of just 3 degrees. here's satellite6 along with action radar. plenty of sunshine earlier today despite the sun these numbers really didn't climb with this arctic high pressure

in control and we have a mostly clear sky on the way tonight and the wind should start to subside and diminish tonight and that's going the lead to more record cold on the way. so, more records less wind. we'll look out for a record in allentown, also for trenton dover and atlantic city, even wilmington close to record territory tonight and philadelphia will drop down to 7 degrees, zero in reading for your overnight low. here's the change on the way for the start of the weekend. future tracker 6 showing an area of low pressure out of texas. you could see the snow breaking out across the tennessee valley. you have ice once again and rain. this will lift from the southwest to northeast direction as early as saturday and with that we do have the changes on the way. so, we'll advance this. you can see future tracker shoalg you at 1 o'clock in the afternoon tomorrow that snow breaking out across our northwest suburbs and really knocking on the door here in philadelphia. it continues as we go throughout the afternoon and early evening hours. if you have any dinner plans tomorrow, 6 o'clock in the evening, you see that snow really overspreading much of

the delaware and lehigh valleys and by midnight, you could see we'll get a transition from snow to rain for the city, areas south and east but for allentown we are still holding on to that snowfall. so, as far as what we are expecting and the storm time line here, saturday midday it starts and begins at snow for everyone. saturday afternoon into saturday night is when we expect the heaviest snow. then also the heaviest changeover to ice and rain at that point and sunday morning this is going to end as some rain showers. expected snowfall 1 to 2 inches for south jersey, down through delaware. two to 4-inches for that 95 corridor the mediator suburbs. but north and west where that snow is going to stick a little longer for the poconos allentown, reading and lancaster we're calling for four to 6-inches of snowfall before you get that changeover to liquid precip. the five day at 5:00 showing you tomorrow high temperature of 33 but that afternoon and evening snow on the way. a morning shower on sunday, otherwise a high of 46 with a late day sun and the bitter blast returns as we get into next week. that's a look at the forecast. we'll send it back over your

>> ♪♪ >> "action news" continues with meteorologist adam joseph, jaime apody rick williams and monica malpass. >> hello again here's what's happening on "action news" friday night. this record breaking cold doesn't just take its toll on the body it also creates problems for mass transit. we'll show you how septa is keeping things moving. also new surveillance video of the gunman wanted in a deadly shooting inside of a wilmington rec center and a local university student's big idea launched him right into abc's shark tank and it leads to quite the feeding frenzy. sharrie williams will have that story. >> details. view from chopper chopper 6 tell us the story. record setting temperatures filling the delaware with slabs of ice. >> wind chills below zero were a shock to the system for

residents around the region this morning and the situation hasn't improved that much. >> that's right. the cold is just too much here for camden high school today. heating issues forced school officials to dismiss students and staff at 1:00 this afternoon. all after school activities and sports were also canceled. officials have not commented on the extent of the problem. >> all right, let's take a live look at the transit center in trenton where folks are eagerly awaiting their ride home tonight. luckily it's warmer than it was this morning but it's still well below freezing and the wind chills continues to be a major factor. as always, make sure you dress in layers if you go outside heavy coats, hats, gloves and scarves they're all a must. >> the good news is it's going to be warmer tomorrow. the bad news, we're also tracking a wintry mix of snow sleet and freezing rain. >> meteorologist mel something live at the "action news" big board with details. >> we have to look at the nuggets of good news because we're tracking unsettled weather that moves in as early as tomorrow.

you can see on storm tracker 6 live double scan radar 3-d we've got winter storm watches warnings and advisories that span a good 1,000 miles from areas in the tennessee valley, the nation's heartland all the way up into the midatlantic and new england. now, we'll flip it over and show you radar. you can see we've got snow breaking out in atlanta. they're expecting an inch later on today and into tonight and nashville you've got snow and mixed precipitation. so we'll track the area of low pressure that will move in from a southwest to northeast direction as early as tomorrow. with that we do have some changes on the way. as far as expected snowfall and accumulation along the i-95 corridor and the metro area overall we're calling for a general two to 4-inches of snow. you could see the model printout anywhere from two to four so we're pretty much in line and there's general consensus with the amount of accumulation we'll see. across the lehigh valley where it's colder and you have that snow that's going the hang on a little longer, we're calling for four to 6-inches of snowfall in the model printout pretty much in line with that as well as 3.4 with the rpm

and as high as 7.4 with the nam. we'll take a closer look with future tracker 6 and time out when the precipitation moves in and out monica with the seven day. >> about a hundred people had to battle the cold overnight when amtrak train lost train. new video of when the engine pulled the stalled train. passengers headed to new york safely boarded another line. >> this morning's bone chilling cold was pretty rough for folks who use septa and it was an even bigger challenge for transit crews who need to keep everything running on time. hoodie. >> walking and wobbling. you so heavy walking yes yes. >> reporter: septa crews came in overnight to get the buses and rails heated up and moving. our cameras were there when the first train of employees went out just after 4:00 this morning from the fern rock maintenance yard. when temperatures drop this extreme equipment just doesn't work the same. >> wires just like in the summer when things expand, in this kind of cold things contract. so, we actually slow our vehicles down to make sure that we're not coming off of the wire and creating a problem. >> reporter: riders say they knew this morning would be bad. it doesn't matter how many layers you put on, nothing could completely block this kind of chill. >> can't play in this. pretty cold. >> stay in. [laughter] >> reporter: we could emphasize enough how important it is right now to bundle up as you wait for the bus or the train or even just to go outside for a few minutes. with the temperatures as low as they are right now, with the wind, frost bite can set

in in less than 15 minutes. along city avenue, eva pilgrim, channel6 "action news." >> well, significant icing and windy conditions suspended as much on the cape may llewes ferry today. the first round trip tomorrow is also canceled. officials say they're using a tugboat to break up the isothey can resume service as soon as possible. anyone planning on using the cape may llewes ferry tomorrow should call ahead. in other news tonight margarita garabito the woman convicted of killing her 10-year-old stepdaughter will spend the rest of her days behind bars. today a judge sentenced her to life without the possibility of parole. she viciously beat charlene ferraro on several occasions. the little girl died as a result of her injuries. her father domingo ferrera was also arrested in the case but committed suicide three days after that. >> new castle county police have released video of the person they believe gunned down a man at a community center this week. investigators say this footage

was taken after the suspect left the rose hill community center. take a close look. monday afternoon 30-year-old jameel jamil killed there. an emotional news conference four grief stricken families shared their stories to drive home the impact of this violence. wayne green who's 16-year-old son was killed leaving a holiday party at a newark community center in 2013 urged any of the dozens of people who were there to come forward >> if you say nothing, are you just as responsible for our son's death as they are. >> new castle county police have authorized up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and coin speed restriction in each of the county's outstanding homicides. >> all right let's get an update on the commute home on

friday night in our "action news" traffic center. >> what's rolling or not rolling out there matt. >> plenty of spots not rolling quickly we'll put it that way. rick and monica we've needed every last bit of sunshine we could get today to keep these temperatures less -- more tolerable than they otherwise would have been but that sun glare we've been dealing with has been leading to some delays and accidents. here on 95 southbound side extra heavy this evening from academy through this points at cottman on down to allegheny. the good news is the crash that we had there has cleared. still have the wreck though on the boulevard northbound side at c street on the inner drive. a couple accidents on the schuylkill earlier have been pushed to the side. everything is opened on 76 but you definitely are looking at slow speeds. in doylestown watch out for a wreck along the 202 parkway near 611. here's 202 in chester county southbound, wow, we're really on the brakes approaching 29 down to 401 headed into that sunshine and the sun glare being blamed for several accidents in bear, delaware, along route 40 pulaski highway near porter road. rick and monica enjoy your weekend.

>> a drexel university senior will appear on abc's hit show shark tank tonight right here on 6abc and his product caused a first among the sharks. 23-year-old christopher gray is a senior at drexel university studying to become an entrepreneur. in high school gray spent months searching scholarships that he could apply for. >> they would just give you a list of a thousand scholarships you have to sort through.

>> melissa is here. wickedly cold weather. then we have earlier snow and maybe more than we first thought. >> yeah, that's right looks like the snow is coming in faster than expected on saturday and accumulation looks to be higher especially north and west because that cold is really going stick there guys. so we'll show you what's going on storm tracker 6 live double scan radar you can see that it is dry and quiet. the issue today and issue this morning, the record cold and there's more record cold expected later on tonight before the snow arrives just in time for the start of our weekend. the high today in philadelphia just 18 degrees and currently we're coming in at 17 here in philadelphia, nine in the poconos, 14 for allentown reading and lancaster. along the coast in atlantic city 16, same thing for wildwood and dover. do you have those wind chills to factor in.

they've been pretty constant most of the day early this morning we had wind chills anywhere from 17 below here in philadelphia to 35 below in the poconos. right now we have single digit wind chills. it feels like four in the city, two for allentown and reading, zero in lancaster and 3 degrees currently along the coast in wildwood. here's satellite6 along with action radar. you can see it's mostly clear and quiet from new england all the way down across the midatlantic region so high pressure is in control. the winds will start to subside and diminish for the rest of tonight and with decreasing winds on the way a there are more records to watch later on tonight and overnight. for philadelphia the record is six. we're calling for a low tonight of seven but pretty close to record territory for allentown, trenton wilmington and atlantic city with either records tonight below zero or in the single digits so we have to watch out for that. we'll widen out the picture here. satellite6 along with action radar shows you our next area of low pressure that we're tracking, it's a low coming out of texas and you could see the precip kind of spilling out ahead of the area of low pressure so snow across the

tennessee valley even rain across its deep south. this will work its way from a southwest to northeast direction as early as tomorrow. so future tracker 6 actually speeding up the arrival time of that snow by noontime you could see it's breaking out across our far northwest suburbs from the poconos down to lancaster. it continues to overspread from a southwest to northeast direction as we get into 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon with that snow along the 95 corridor, it will continue at 6:30 in the evening, so you might want to think about some alternative plans if you're stepping out on the town for some dinner perhaps on saturday. but you notice we do already find that transition from snow over to sleet. if not some mixed precipitation and rain across south jersey. 9:30 tomorrow night we'll start to find a transition from snow to a little bit of mixed precipitation along the 95 corridor but rain for the city areas south and east. mixed precipitation across our immediate northwest suburbs but that snow hangs on north and west. as we get into the overnight hours, however everyone looks to be above freezing where you get that transition from snow

to any mixed precip to rain but it still holds on for lehigh county up through the poconos. by midday on sunday morning you could see moisture moves out, clouds break for some sunshine and temperatures on sunday will actually be in the middle and lower 40's so sunday afternoon we'll start to salvage a little bit of that weekend. expected snowfall 1 to 2 inches for south jersey and delaware. two to four as you move along that 95 corridor for trenton philadelphia and wilmington. about four to 6-inches for lancaster northern montgomery and bucks reading allentown and the poconos and it does look like that snow will hold on a little longer for areas north and west of town. saturday snow is what we're calling for, afternoon and evening thumping. temperatures have been well below freezing and we've had this extreme cold for sometime so the roads will quickly slick over. this will be a heavy wet snow. light icing is possible and then changing over to rain in many locations. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast showing you tomorrow high temperature of 33. afternoon and evening snow on the way.
