a good monday morning. we begin with the major sweep at the the oscars. a bit of an upset "birdman" scooped up four trophies and the parties raging on at this hour. >> that's right. our brandyondy joins us now. >> reporter: the celebration is on here in hollywood. you can see the stars walking behind me on the oscar red carpet and celebrating at the governor's ball where there are 1,600 guests drinking 1,300 bottles of champagne. the big award, best picture going to "birdman." best actress went to julianne moore. and best actor one of the best acceptance speeches of the night went to eddie redmayne. >> i am fully aware that i am a lucky, lucky man. >> eddie redmayne winning in

"the theory of everything." best supporting actor went to j.k. simmons and best supporting actress to patricia arquette for "boyhood." let's talk about neil patrick harris. there are a lot of mixed reviews for his role as host. the opening number was spectacular. there was a sort of holographic image that went along with him on stage and then there was the funny moment of his imitation of "birdman" where he walked out in his underwear on the oscar stage surprising many people. some critics though believe his jokes fell flat. one person who was not flat at all lady gaga. my goodness. what a performance. ♪ what songs they have sung ♪ >> lady gaga and julie andrews on stage for the 50th anniversary of the sound of music. we saw a lot of stars walking the red carpet. many celebrating and holding their oscars in hand. i have a feeling it is going to be a very, very late night or early morning i should say. a lot of people are not going to

snow and ice to the texas panhandle. schools have delayed openings after dozens of accidents reported yesterday. at least one person was killed when his car skidded on ice. many flights also cancelled. the area has already had more snow this year than it normally gets in an entire winter. >> the denver area bracing for an awful commute this morning. storm dumping 6 to 12 inches and some melted yesterday and refreezing overnight. the legislature cancelled today's sessions. many schools are closed or will open late today. >> several thousand flights cancelled or day laid. hardest hit, dallas fort worth. that's a major hub for american airlines. thousands of flights delayed or cancelled over the weekend too. well the icy weather in dallas extends to northern alabama. rain for the entire gulf coast and more rain in southern california and arizona. >> chicago and detroit, only in

the low teens today. warming up to a high of 20 in minneapolis and won't get above freezing in d.c. b stepped up security after a terror threat against malls here in the u.s. >> an al qaeda group calling on muslims to attack those malls. abc with the latest. >> reporter: a terrorist group's propaganda video threatening the american homeland specifically shopping malls for the first time. this morning security officials are urging vigilance after al qaeda somaliafy yale yet al shabaab released the video saturday. a direct call for home grown extremists to attack western malls including in the uk and canada. the video urges violence at the mall of america. shoppers there seemed defiant. not letting the threat disrupt their routines. >> i feel like it's a fact of life with the threat. >> a little hesitation this morning but we talked about it. we talked about it with the kids

and everyone was fine with staying. so we decided to stay. >> al shabaab is based in kenya in africa and the group warned of more attacks there like the september 2013 assault on the west gate mall that left 67 people dead. no specific plot identified homeland security secretary jay johnson wants americans to be alert and calm. >> we're in a new phase now. this most recent video release reflects that. the reason i think we're concerned about this is because it encourages independent actors who can strike with little notice. >> issuing a bulletin overnight noting that other al shabaab videos asking for western muslims to attack have been unsuccessful. abc news washington. >> 11 students at connecticut's university are being treated for what appears to be an overdose of the drug known as mali. one person in critical

patricia arquette speaking about women's issue. you had common and john legend speaking about the african-american community and jk simmons talking about his own family. what were the moments that are going to live from oscars 2015? >> i loved all of the emotion that came out after common and john legend won that award. i loved seeing people in tears. i thought that was beautiful. i was on the phone calling my own parents because it was so great. you know something that i noticed this year is that a couple of people including ida when the documentary won, the music started to play but then people kept talking and then the music stopped. listen we're not scared of you, we're going to keep talking if we want to. >> that was pretty funny. a great moment. >> always good to see you. thank you so much. we will of course be seeing a whole lot more about the oscars
