tv   Action News at Noon  ABC  February 23, 2015 12:00pm-12:31pm EST

12:00 pm
minimize the damage out there. >> stand by, because we want to pick your brain as we watch this. we want to let our viewers know, this is "action news" at noon, this is extended coverage. route 130 to exit ramble -- ramp route 90. "action news" at noon as we watch live from chopper 6hd a tanker fire. >> dan are you still with us at the moment? i think we have lost dan. to recap he said this was a significant fire, unknown injuries, you can see the white foam that is covering the road. it does seem like it's done its job and extinguished most of the flames. there are some flames still there, looks like what was the back of the tanker truck. this all unfolded at 11:00 a.m. tanker truck overturned on northbound 130 to the exit ramp
12:01 pm
to 90. the northbound 130 exit ramp to 90. there is some thought they may be taking neighbors out of their homes there. the person we were talking to from camden county was checking on that, as well. he said they were still doing the assessment. the tanker truck had a full looked like of fuel when it turned over ascertain exploded into flames. the conditions described as extreme. it's bitter cold anne the wind are starting is to pick up as well. that's adding to the challenges to the first responders on the scene. let's bring in david murphy to talk about the wind conditions that played a role in the fire raging as it did for several minutes. david. >> well, rick williams the winds have been out of the. north and fluctuating between 15 and 20 miles per hour, but the gusts have been going higher, 25 to 30 miles per hour. if you're south of this scene
12:02 pm
as those neighborhoods adjacent to the highway there obviously are. that's the direction the wind is being driven. because it's going so strongly, especially within the last maybe 15 to 30 minutes, it's picked up a little bit. the smoke is being blown failure low to the ground. even -- fairly low to the ground. even though we're seeing the smoke complin issuing -- diminishing, i would stay indoors, and keep the winds tightly. if you have a drafting windows wet a towel and put it along the sill because that will reduce the wind from getting into the house and absorb whatever is in the air. we have gusts at 30 miles per hour. directly coming down from the north with a northwest component
12:03 pm
possible as the afternoon ensues. if you're over toward the south or southeast of the scene that's where you have to be careful make sure the windows are sealed. we don't know what this is and sometimes you can get sick from some of the stuff going around organ the trucks, especially when it blooms like this and becomes inflamed. there you can see clearly the wind is driving the smoke toward the south and southeast and fairly close to the ground especially when the gusts pick up. things that's what you're seeing right now. notice how the smoke is can you recalling down and going along the -- curling down and going along the snow embankment. that a gust that is probably coming up and driving the smoke closer to the ground and into the neighborhoods adjacent. >> we're seeing fire crews on the scene from various jurisdictions as we heard from the camden county management officials. fire police, emergency officials here trying to tackle
12:04 pm
the flames and again perhaps we suspect getting the neighbors out of the various homes when it directly behind the fire when it ignited. this is the root 90 ramp to route 130. continuing to look live from chopper 6hd if you look to the right of the screen you'll see neighborhoods that were impacted by the fire and suspect residents and neighbors were told to evacuate once the fire was fully engulfed. >> again this was at 11:00 a.m., the public information officer from camden county calling it a haz/mat situation. the officer of emergency management is on the scene. they have called in fire departments from around the area, what they call mutual aid to assist in fighting the significant fire. you saw they put the foam only the burning tanker truck. it does seem to be effective.
12:05 pm
we no longer see the flames and the smoke is dieing down. a good situation outcome of putting the foam on the tanker truck just a few minutes ago but again this area is shut down, here the route 90 ramp to 130. >> the ground video now from the neighborhoods the pennsauken community that is behind where the fire ignited. emergency officials and ambulances on the scene as they work to get residents out of their homes. we were told there were reports of injuries, we are trying to determine to what extent and if it included the driver of the tanker truck. this is the ground video of the neighborhood where we saw neighbors rushing from their home from the fire and billowing smoke. this was a haz/mat situation and continues to be a haz/mat situation, as we heard from the emergency management official, there was a full load of fuel on
12:06 pm
that tanker when it overturned and ignited several moments ago in camden county. >> we have a map to give you a better idea where it is unfolding if you're familiar with the pennsauken and south jersey area. it is on the jersey side of the betsy ross bridge on the ramp from 90 to 130. you can see on the map, as well there are many homes here in the area, haddonfield road, wind ham road off to the bottom. screen. it comes off the betsy ross bridge. if you cross that bridge you're on 90 and you would take the ramp on to 130. it was 11:00 a.m. when a tanker truck carrying a full load of fuel overturned and burst into flames. in fact part of the tanker truck, the explosion was such that part of the tanker truck our chopper pilot telling us it came off and was burning a distance away.
12:07 pm
that's since extinguished. firefighters took time how to approach the burning vehicle. they needed to know what was burning. they moved in with haz/mat teams and covered the tanker truck with foam. it did a job for a time extinguishing the flames, bus stop on the tanker truck it has burden into flames yet again. looks like they are putting water on the fire. we did see from our chopper shot in the surrounding neighborhood looked like people were coming out of their homes and leaving whether they were doing that on their own to be cautious or officials were going door to door telling them to do that. conditions are extreme, there's windy and ice that's contributing to the challenges that the firefighters, haz/mat the office of the emergency management and police department are encountering as they try to put out the flames of the burning tanker truck in pennsauken new jersey. >> the flames have risen again
12:08 pm
to some extent as we continue to watch things unfold. fire crews on the scene trying to tackle the fire. looked like it had been diminished we're seeing a return to flames. if our pilot monroe can zoom in on the fire, just to show you the extent of the heat, the entire cab we'll show you the skeleton of what remained of the tanker truck the entire cab has been burned all the way through the rubber of the tires seeder seeder -- seered off. this was a fire of tremendous proportion and heat. it's taking a tremendous eventer by camden county fire crews there's the cab right there. of what was left of this incredible fire. >> i appears it was an
12:09 pm
explosion, the tanker truck didn't stay in tact, it came apart. the chopper pilot said it looked like the highway was starting to burn. the the flames have popped up again, the firefighters are figure out as they extinguish the flames. it's amazing to see that and know that in that direction the smoke is billowing there's a neighborhood there and homes and we did see people getting out of their homes and leaving the neighborhood probably a wise idea at this point as firefighters try to contain the flames and get this tanker truck fire under control. looking live now across the neighborhood where the smoke is billowing right into that neighborhood here in pennsauken, new jersey. >> again we're looking at a number of emergency officials on the scene, this this is the danger that is presenting for the residents who unfortunately
12:10 pm
live near this accident scene and we suspect were evacuated from their homes. because of the billowing smoke black smoke seeping into the neighborhoods and certainly causing a danger for folks who happen to be home at this time. we mentioned when this happened it was after rush hour which was probablys. because kids are at school. the flames continue to burn and firefighters continue to tackle amilled the frigid conditions. >> you can see in the ground shot there are rescue crews from bellmawr, new jersey, they have called until rescue crews and firefighters from around the south jersey region to help tackle the flames. this is the route 90 ramp to
12:11 pm
130. it isen the other side of the -- it is on the other side of the bridge from the city of philadelphia. this tanker truck overturned it burst into flames. there are unknown injuries at this point. it does not appear any other vehicles were involved. this is a isolated to this tanker truck, this is is a significant fire and we will continue to monitor the situation in pennsauken new jersey and of course you can always watch for updates at any moment on 6abc.com. >> all right we'll take a quick break and be right back with more coverage, stay with us. >>
