"action news" reporter sarah bloomquist is as close to the scene as she is being allowed. sarah, what is the update there? >> reporter: well, jim neighbors are now back in their homes as work gets under way to remove the wreckage from this tanker that was carrying thousands of gallons of gasoline. it was up there on that on-ramp and they are -- you can see it's getting a little dark now but you can see the trucks up there. they just lifted up part of the charred remains of the tapping up off the road and carted that away. we're just off wyndam road and the off-ramp borders the backyards here in this neighborhood and that's right where this tanker overturned sending smoke and flames up into the air. the tanker carrying 8,000 gallons of fuel overturned and exploded in flames around 11 o'clock this morning on the off-ramp from route 90 to route 130 in pennsauken.

neighbors heard a series of explosions. >> well, it was heck of a way to wake up, i tell you what. so i'm in that building right there and i hear explosions, like five or explosions. >> reporter: somehow the driver escaped from the cab of the tanker. the flames raged for about an hour melting pavement, guardrails burning the nearby hillside and absolutely incinerating the tanker itself. >> so, i go up to the window and i look and i look across the way and there's like a towering inferno of smoke and everything, so i watched it until they finally evacuated us. >> reporter: plumes of thick black smoke billowed across the residential streets as neighbors fled from their homes. one firefighter was transported to the hospital for indisclosed injuries. neighbors say it's not the first time a truck has overturned on this ramp. >> that's not the first time trucks turn over on that off ramp all the time coming around there. >> reporter: crews pumped out the remaining 200 gallons of gas left in the tanker after the fire. by 5 o'clock with the metal

6abc.com. a love triangle on twosome drive in moorestown, new jersey, this morning ended in the death of a man from philadelphia. "action news" reporter chad pradelli is live at the scene of an attempted murder-suicide. chad what are the details on this? >> reporter: jim, the company is called shields business solutions and this attempted murder suicide happened shortly after 7:00 a.m. moorestown police say edgar figueroa pulled out a gun shot his coworker then turned the gun on himself. if not for a split seconds decision melvin nieves may be dead. instead he's at cooper hospital where he was flown after the workplace shooting. police say just after 7:00 a.m. nieves and edgar figueroa were getting ready to begin their shift at shields business solutions when figueroa opened fire on his coworker striking himself times. >> we're being told by witnesses that mr. figueroa came up behind him as they were leaving the building and

actually tried to shoot him in the head and he jerked and that bullet grazed him. >> reporter: figueroa followed and killed himself in the rear of the property. sources say the shooting was the result of a love triangle. shields business solutions provides atm and armored car services. the company released a statement that reads in part an unspeakable tragedy unfolded here this morning and first and foremost we would like the families of those involved to know that our thoughts and prayers are with them. police sane nieves was not armed when figueroa allegedly shot him. the company says it has provide add grief counselor for employees. police say many of the security officers at shields supply their own personal weapons for protection on the job but what sort of background check is conducted is unclear. >> we've dealt with shields in the past and they're definitely an upstanding company and they do their due

dill judgments at last check the victim remained in critical condition at cooper hospital. i'm live in moorestown, chad pradelli channel6 "action news." jim. >> thank you chad. it has been another chilly and wind whipped day in the tri-state area. but now get set for plunging temperatures. accuweather says philadelphia's headed down to 3 degrees overnight with some other locations expected to reach zero. meteorologist cecily tynan is live at the "action news" big board and cecily yet more frigid weather which can't be good for people with recently reconstructed knees. welcome back. >> thank you. it's nice to be back. i can forecast the weather with this knee right now and it says it is going to be cold. already 23 degrees in philadelphia. if you look way up to the north, though, ottawa, quebec, caribou, below zero and this air mass is moving down from the north in the overnight hours and a lot of areas will likely be setting record lows. right now you factor in the winds. the wind chill makes it feel like nine in philadelphia, feels like five in trenton

three in reading. the wind chill has already dropped down to 1 degree below zero in allentown and seven below in the poconos and we will have the winds with us through the evening. so, if you're heading out tonight, you definitely do want to bundle up between about 7 o'clock and 1 o'clock in the morning the wind chill around philadelphia and areas to the south down to zero to 5 degrees below zero. the immediate suburbs it will feel like five to 10 degrees below zero with the wind chill and the northern lehigh valley and the poconos the wind chill dropping as low as 15 degrees below zero. the good news is overnight the winds will be easing off but the combination of the light winds, the clear skies and the fresh snow pack means that temperatures will be plummeting. philadelphia 3 degrees, the record low for tonight 2 degrees set back in 1889 so it's going to be close and many of our northwest suburbs temperatures below zero with new records. i'll talk about when to expect a warmup in the full accuweather 7-day forecast. jim. >> we need to brace for low

temperatures. >> that's another good one. >> thank you cecily. before you bundle up be sure to check the 6abc storm tracker app. both the hourly and seven-day forecasts are there to help you get ready for these frigid temperatures. it began with a domestic dispute in whitehall township and ended with police fatally shooting a suspect in al town live at state police in bethlehem is "action news" reporter john rawlins. john, you've got the full story. >> reporter: jim, this started about 3 o'clock this morning. two crime scenes, three or 4 miles apart. and a police pursuit for at least some of that distance. the police chase ended with the suspect's black suv pinned against a fence in a snow bank. police say the driver jerome nichols ran. >> the officer attempted to take him into custody and he fled. the officers pursued. pd deployed a taser without effect. >> reporter: dash cam video

caught the suspect attacking a officer with a kitchen knife. >> it's pretty clear to me that the officer was under attack with a large knife. he was stabbed multiple times. certainly under those circumstances the force that was utilize is there in my opinion justifiable. >> reporter: the stabbed observe, a five year veteran was hospitalized with wounds to his shoulder. >> he had some surgery to control some bleeding but he is -- i spoke with him afterwards. i was at his room and he's in good spirits. >> reporter: minutes before the police confrontation it's believed nichols entered this twin home miles away and established his former girlfriend. neighbor jennifer brown lives next door. >> i heard a lot of screaming help me, help me, some banging on the floor. so, i instantly went over to the wall and banged on the wall and said i'm calling 911. >> reporter: brown went outside the victim had pushed out this screen and was shouting for help from an

upper window. >> she had said that he was in the house and that he had stabbed her. >> reporter: by then nichols had fled the house and that set up for the confrontation with the police. neighbors say that nichols and the female victim had been a couple for several years but that she had ended the relationship a few weeks ago. live in bethlehem, john rawlins, channel6 "action news." >> thank you, john. only "action news" was in bucks county this afternoon as two burglary suspects walked out of their first court appearance. police say james towns and nashir williams got into mike's gun shop in tullytown by breaking through the roof at 2:30 this morning. the security system alerted authorities. that set off a seven-hour standoff. one tried to escape through the ventilation system but was caught in a pizza shop next door. both suspects face charges of burglary.

the already compromised building. parts of 52nd and locust will be closed for at least a week as demolition continues. sidewalks in the area will be closed for at least three weeks time. one of new jersey's most infamous prison inmates has died of respiratory failure. word came today that robert marshall died saturday at south woods state prison in bridgeton. marshall of toms river was convicted in 1986 of hiring a hit man to murder his wife for her $1.5 million insurance policy. the story was the inspiration for the book and television movie blind faith. opponents of new jersey's park test marked a victory today in trenton. the state assembly approved a bill limits the scope of the standardized test for three years starting this is fall. the measure bars educators from using the assessments to determine student's placement in advance programs or use it as a graduation requirement. it's argued teachers spends

too much class time preparing for the test. a proposal to privatize liquor sales in pennsylvania moves ahead. the proposal would create 1200 licenses to private businesses to sell wine and liquor. grocery stores would be able to sell wine not liquor. about 100 of the 600 government owned and operated stores would gradually close. the bill is similar to legislation that stalled in the senate last year. teenagers learned the ropes of city government today at philadelphia's city hall. mayor michael nutter kicked off the 45th annual lockheed martin pal day this morning. 18 high schoolers took the oath of office and then spent the day shad going senior level city officials. 6abc president and general manager showed his support at the ceremony today.

>> everybody is in camp ready to get to work. >> lots to talk about with this phillies too. phillies will hold their first full squad workout tomorrow. today the media tried to pull a full court press on ryan howard. jeff skversky in clearwater with more on ryan and his relationship with management. jeff. >> reporter: deucis on his first day here in phillies camp ryan howard says he feels great he chatted it up with phillies fans signed some autographs. manager ryne sandberg says his first baseman is in good spirits after a long talk. of course howard had quite the off season trade rumors and harsh comments from his general manager. a big hug for the big piece. ryan howard among the remaining veterans to report to phillies spring training today. general manager ruben amaro recently had a heart to heart with howard after saying this winter the phils would be better off without him. >> i talked to ryan about it and i've apologized to him because frankly that was more of a private statement.

1889 but allentown 6 degrees below zero, that will be a new record. reading five below. wilmington three and atlantic city airport likely tying a record low of 2 degrees. right now 23 degrees in philadelphia. allentown already down to 14. trenton 18. millville 25. and reading 17 degrees. compare this to yesterday. yesterday's high 47 degrees. that felt really nice. it's 1 degree above normal. we're 18 degrees cooler in philadelphia than this time yesterday. 23 degrees cooler in allentown than this time yesterday so big changes. satellite6 along with action radar showing cold front has moved off the coast. we have winds right now out of the northwest and that is creating a wind chill factor. the current wind chill right now about 5 degrees in philadelphia, by 10 o'clock tonight, down to 2 degrees below in philadelphia. five below in allentown and reading and 18 degrees below zero in the poconos where we do have a wind chill advisory in effect. so definitely bundle up tonight. the good news is for your morning commute for the bus stop the winds will be light.
