it is monday night and the big story on "action news" tonight is new information in the wake of a tense day for people who work and live near the scene of the accident. "action news" reporter kenneth moton live. what is the latest here? >> jim, the morning commute could really be impacted because investigators say the inspection of the ramp behind the homes here won't happen until tomorrow. also new tonight, we now know the name of the company that owned the tanker truck. it was p.k. transport here in pennsauken. this unrecognizable piece of charred and melted-down debris all that was left on the off ramp to 130 in pennsauken. crews pointed the remaining tanker in the ball of fire after

the truck carried in 8,000 gallons of gas overturned. >> i thought somebody broke into the house. i heard a boom kcathunk and i ran upstairs. >> and the smoke could be seen for miles. and those around the road were breathing in toxic fumes. and 30 homes were evacuated and they worked to handle the inferno much >> my friend got me out of here when we were evacuated. there has been an oily residue in my mouth all day and i got a wicked headache from it. >> hours after the fire was put out camden county said the major gas spill contaminated the ground, but air monitoring inside and outside homes showed normal levels. >> my mom who is 92 is not here. i left her at her house because we were afraid of the air quality. she usually stays with me during the week. >> it damaged the roadways and sparked deal towers slowing

below zero. the wind are slacking. the skies are clear and we have snow cover. that adds to really good radiational cooling. philadelphia forecasting a low of 3 degrees. the record low for tomorrow morning is 2 set way back in 1889. we're going to be close. a lot of regions likely will set records. forecasting a record low of 6 below in allentown, 5 below in reading, 3 below in lancaster. 3 degrees in wilmington. and atlantic city airport likely tying a record low of 2 degrees. bare in mind that this has been a brutal cold snap. the last 11 days temperatures running -- this is exceptional -- more than 16 1/2 degrees below normal and five mornings single-digit lows. tomorrow we make it six. i have warmer weather on the way. you have to be patient, but i let you know when in the seven-day forecast forecast. >> thank you. the 6abc stormtracker app is a great resource when it gets down to these bitterly cold temperatures. you can see weather reports from around the area and get the

updated hourly and seven-day forecast. it is all free on apple and google store. if you live in certain delaware county communities like swathmore springfield and darby don't be surprised if your tap water tastes salty. officials say you shouldn't be alarmed either. "action news" reporter sharrie williams live at the darby municipal building. why is there a salt taste in the water? >> well jim, it's coming from the salt mix that's actually used to treat the roads. we spoke with aqua america about it, and they tell us tonight that the warm up yesterday actually caused the snow and ice that you see here still on the roads, well it is filled with that salt and it is running off. aqua says the water may have a distinct taste but is still safe. janice davis on the job when a resident called in with a concern. >> i had a call from a resident

that stayed miss janice have you tasted the water recently? >> she had not had a drink from the faucet and wanted to better under the complaint. >> i came into the kitchen and tasted the water and said wow, it taste like salt. and that's a bad taste in your mouth. >> that bad taste, according to aqua is from the run-off of the road salts ever area roads and high quasi because of the recent winter storms. that's right, the salt mix used to keep the roads safe made its way into aqua's water treatment facility. most of the complaints are from springfield and swathmore, but now darby, upper darby and lansdowne residents are complaining, too. and aqua understand that summers may be caught off guard by the weird taste, but says that the water is safe and that there is no threat to public health. but for janice davis, this salty taste is a first. >> we have been putting salt on the treats for a long time. why all of a sudden the salt ran

into the reservoir? i don't understand that. have we been drinking it all along and maybe never noticed it? >> great questions. it was miss davis who noticed the salty water, on you viewer and she called us and we called aqua to get answers. aqua says they get calls from time to time but never this many after we had this salt mix on the road and in the run-off. and they expect for the salt rye rye -- salty taste to go away in the next day or two, and the water is still being treated and that's why it is safe. west philadelphia's ice-encrusted building has been cut down to size. demolition crews are ripping through the structure. it caught fire a week ago and all of the water spray by the firefighters froze into fires and ice.

and it was not safe. the sidewalks in the area are closed for three weeks to finish the demolition. the police killed a man after the chase today in the lehigh valley. it all ended in allentown with 42-year-old jerome nichols crashing an s.u.v. into a fence and then trying to escape on foot. authorities say nichols then attacked an officer with a knife a kitchen knife, and was stabbing him when another officer fired the fatal shot. they say the assault began with nichols nichols going into his former girlfriend's home and stabbing her. she was wounded. she and the wounded officer are hospitalized and should be ok. and edgar figueroa shot and killed himself after shooting a fellow employee in the head. melvin nieves suffered only a graze wound to the head even though the shot was fired from behind. officials say that nieves jerked suddenly, probably saving his

life. the shooting happened as both men were supposed to be beginning their shift another shields shields business solutions. the fight over a woman. and "action news" there as they left the bucks county courtrooms after the first appearance. the pair broke into mike's gunshot overnight. one of the suspects because caught in the pizza shop next door after trying to escape through the vent lakes system. they face burglary charges. the federal government is very concerned about the danger posed by crude oil tanker trains. the same danger that wendy saltzman talked about in a special report at 11. just last week we saw what happened when one of the trains derailed in west virginia leading to a spill and massive fireballs. the transportation department predicted today that the oil tanker derailments will happen 10 times a year on average over

the next 20 years. their analysis says that crashes will call more than $4 billion in damage and potentially kill hundreds of people if an accident happens at a densely-populated area. as wendy saltzman report revealed, these oil trains chris-cross through residential neighborhoods in philadelphia and south jersey. they rerained twice in the span of a year. fortunately neither time led to a spill or explosion. a superior court judge ordered chris christie to put more money to the tune of $1.7 billion into the pension fund for retired state employees. christie cut the contributions last year to balance the state budget when revenue came in under predicted prejeks eded projections and andingand planning to do the same. and the court says they cannot

officials at the mall of america in minnesota say they have beefed up security and they're prepared for any emergency. this comes after a tape released this weekend by the al shabaab terrorist group calling on muslims to attack shaping malls, specifically the mall of america. the mall conducted emergency drills today and said there was no credible threat associated with the mall. al shabaab attacked a kenyan mall two years ago killing 60 people. the latest funding crisis on capitol hill could see the department of homeland security run out of money midnight friday night. the house republican measure combined funding for homeland security with a move to overturn president obama's immigration

reform. but senate democrats vowed to block that so republicans are searching for another strategy without hanging homeland security out to dry. the crisis that is post-traumatic stress disorder affecting thousands of veterans of the wars of iraq and afghanistan is getting more and more attention these days. that would include last night at the oscars. 10, 15 just one. if i can save one life it's all worth it. that would be it. on "healthcheck" tonight a ground-breaking study says we are going about peanut allergies all wrong. the problem affects more than 2% of children in the united states. as you know, it can be life-threatening. most parents of babies at risk of developing allergies go to extremes to keep them away from peanut-based foods. but research published today in the new england journal of medicine furnished that idea on its head. it showed that exposing infants to peanuts before they turn one year old actually lowered their risk of an allergy by more than 80%. it seems to have helped. >> this is the first step for peanuts to prove there is an easy way for pretty much anybody to prevent peanut allergies in the kids even in the high-risk group. >> it is important that parents
