4:19 pm
normal. only 4 days we had temperatures above normal and one day on the second, where we were completely at normal and the projection here is -- we want to tell you about the ice safety, many kids want to venture out on the ice because of how cold it has been no ice is totally safe, unless an official says at a state park it's okay to go on and it needs to be 4 to 7 inches thick to walk on and the thickness varies in different places of a body of water, and the snow pack on it also blinds you from seeing what is underneath. satellite and radar clouds coming in from the west and off the coast and not touching us overnight ton and a mixture of
4:20 pm
stars and clouds and not as brutal but single digits and 14 in millville and 17 in philadelphia, and air temperatures bust above the freezing point area wide, take advantage of these temperatures in the mid and upper 30s tomorrow. in fact your four day at 4:00, 38 and not as cold with a decent amount of sunshine, the system slides to the south and thursday and brings a brief period of snow showers for the shore community and southern parts of delaware and for philadelphia a few flurries and 26 degrees and more cold on friday 20 degrees below normal again and we'll try to recover to 30 here, good-bye and good riddens, to this brutal month of february. >> we are looking forward to march. >> tonight at 11:00 the "action news" troubleshooter will be on the case to get their father's final wishes honored. here is nydia han with a preview. >> a name and date, put on a

more when the newcastle police department will hold a news conference tonight set for 5:00. and breaking news from ocean county new jersey where people were hurt where a house in stafford township exploded. two of the gas workers were critically injured in edition the blast leveled one home and severely damaged two more and led to the evacuation of 75 others, more more on those displaced we turn to "action news" reporter john rawlins live at the scene. >> reporter: hi shirleen, we are about 150 yards from the blast location, it's just behind me here, fire trucks gave way to trucks with construction equipment going in and out of here to repair the adjacent
4:31 pm
properties. the blast rocked the township and neighbors said there had been a concern over the smell of natural gas. >> when i left for work there was fire trucks here and a couple of cops, i smelled gas but i didn't think of it i heard the explosion and i rushed home to make sure it wasn't my house. it was in an unoccupied guest house belonging to the reynolds family that own a landscaping business. >> i got right up to the scene and it was a war zone, just a hole in the ground. the explosion sent debris into neighboring yards and officials say it's too early to say what triggered the blast and injured 13 people. >> let the professionals come in and osha is involved and the board of public utilities is involved and the prosecutors office is conducting a cause and origin as well.
4:32 pm
because of damage to underground gas lines gas is shut off to 300 homes with dropping temperatures residents are waiting to see when they return the gas service. >> and now we have to worry about pipes freezing. >> that is an interesting point there. officials here have been vague as to when they can restore gas service. they have a shelter for those that don't have gas service. back to you. >> thank you john. we'll have continuing updates on this location all evening long at 6abc.com. we have video from the action cam and chopper 6 hd along with more than a dozen photos of this devastating blast find it all on
4:33 pm
website. this was the almost unbelievable scene in ardmore, montgomery county today the white jeep cherokee there sitting on top of several other cars, at a dealership on lancaster avenue the driver of the jeep says she lost control of the car and hit a snow bank and went airborne and the result made for quite the curious scene. vernon odom spoke to people that were there today. >> reporter: it was quiet here in this back alley when this car came crashing into this accura dealership. >> it went airborne and landed on three cars in the accura dealership. police say that a 74-year-old woman hit the accelerator rather than the brakes after leaving the nearby car wash, it had the the guardrail and went airborne and landed on three cars in the lot. >> i saw her accelerating from
4:34 pm
here at an irate speed no stopping and no nothing and up in the air and i ran over and asked her if she was all right and told her to stay in the car and called 911. rescuers removed the passenger side door to remove the woman from the cherokee she was taken to the hospital and admitted. >> the female was driving this car and ended up losing control and the car is in midair so our firefighters and rescue companies came in and did a super job stabilizing the car and they cut the door off and removed her meticulously and she is transferred to the hospital. >> by 10:00 the car was removed two cars were brand new and one was used. the driver of the jeep is listed in stable condition and her injuries are not so serious,
4:35 pm
disaster averted here. vernon odom, channel 6 "action news." turning now to the frigid accuweather forecast in case you needed a reminder how cold it is look at the icy delaware river, we are in the middle of an uncomfortable stretch of conditions here and we are getting rather used to it adam joseph live now. >> it's just not right. who do we send complaints to? >> i am just the messenger. snowfall is below normal but temperatures are cold. as we look at bear creek resort over there in berks county, 22 degrees and the wind is out of the south southwest at 16 and as
4:36 pm
we look at the open waters from cape may can you see cloud cover there with win from the south-southeast at 10 and windchill at 12 there is a storm off the coast sliding well to the south bringing snow to raleigh and parts of the outer banks of north carolina with the deep cold that is you pressed way to the south and a mixture in parts of south carolina. thankfully this is missing us just by that much. we'll talk about that system grazing our area on thursday morning and more bitter cold for the end of the week. >> of course. >> we'll show you the numbers. vending machines are not typically filled with healthy food but some of us get stuck there from time to time. we have the best of the worst options health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman is here with the vending machine
4:37 pm
edition. >> this was a tough one to do typically we break down the options giving green lights and red lights this edition has a lot of red lights but there are a few items that won't detour your diet. you're literally putting 50 on black, saying i hop this is healthy for me. registered dietician lindsay kaine says if are you looking for a mid-afternoon snack curbing that by running to the vending machine could be a diet detour. >> see chips and crackers and candy bars, most of the food inside is processed with salt and sugar and empty calories. >> first chip challenge. like popcorn, chips and pretzels. >> what is the worst and what is the best? >> i call pretzels a savory
4:38 pm
candy bar it's loaded with sodium. >> compared to a chip that has been fried this has at least been baked. she gives both the pretzels and potatoes her diet detour i would say the sun chips are your better bet. even better go for a bag of popcorn. >> next up cookies, crackers and peanuts. >> we stay away from the cookies for sure, instead reach for the peanuts, the protein will keep you full longer and as for the crackers she advises approach with caution. >> we are looking at our fruity fix. >> twizzlers and swedish fish, they are loaded with saug ar 32 grams in the bag. >> that is 8 tea spoons of sugar. >> these things will spike our blood sugar and give us a kick and then we are back to square one. >> next up chocolate lindsay
4:39 pm
says candy bars are never a smart snack she says skip the snickers it will not satisfy you. >> it will not sustain you through dinner to kick the chocolate craving go for a handful of m&ms. >> would you say these are the big of the diet detours out of a vending machine? >> absolutely. >> if you are going to have a baked good, might as well make it worth it something you can sit down and enjoy preferly without trances fat and keep healthy snacks in your desk or bag and 2006 owners that operate 20 or more vending machines have to post the calories for each food. >> i'm more surprised about the fruit snacks. >> it's deceiving. >> it's a desperate moment in
4:40 pm
the vending machine. >> thank you ali. still ahead developing news involving george zimmerman. why the justice department will not charge him in the death of trayvon martin. >> what keith olbermann said about penn state that got him suspended from espn. >> and why a disney star is calling a host of e's fashion police ignorant. >>
4:41 pm
4:42 pm
george zimmerman the man that fatally shot trayvon martin during a confrontation in 2012 will not face federal charges, the justice department says their own investigation did not find enough evidence to press charges against zimmerman.
4:43 pm
he was acquitted by a state jury in 2013 prosecutors would have to prove it was done by racial animosity. a standard they could not meet, zimmerman maintains he shot the unarmed teen in self-defense. and a horrifying crash by an alleged drunk driver, and a pickup truck hitting a light pole slamming it's the upper deck of i-93, the man told police the last thing he remembered was falling asleep at the wheel is he not seriously hurt but facing several charges including dui. over here at the big board with the big talkers, we begin with a big question. did e's host juliana ransick take it too far. she said i feel like she smells
4:44 pm
like pat you'lly oil or weed, maybe weed. that did not go over well with zendaya, and said they were outrageously offensive and named her own family members that also have dread locks and urged everybody to think before stereotyping black hair. >> she says she was referring to a bohemian chic look. weigh in on my facebook page. and now to another broadcasting gaffe-keith olbermann is suspended for what he said to penn state students on twitter. he tweeted the phrase we are and a reference to thon a fundraiser.
4:45 pm
his response is pitful as in we are pitful. not only did the notorious spend state critic not back down including to call those that defended the school names and corrected their gram ermargrammar, he says he was way less mature than the students that did a great job fundraising. and to men are in hot water because of an ill-advised prank inside of the sussex county courthouse in delaware. a chief pointed his service weapon at an assistant attorney general as a joke. and an officer drew his weapon in return because he was alarmed but the chief bailiff is suspended without pay and they confirm that a prosecutor is also suspended for coaxing the
4:46 pm
bailiff into the prank and a judge has reportedly told bailiffs they can no longer carry firearms in courtrooms a big consequence there. >> thank you shirleen. another check of the roads now, matt pellman is standing by in the traffic center with an update. >> very so many things to offer you this afternoon probably none of which you want or drivers want, as we look outside a number of accidents, one on 95 by the exit for the betsy ross bridge partially sticking out in the left lane and pen dotd and police are on the scene and this is a normal spot we are jammed and so extra jammed from the expressway to this point on cotman avenue. and an accident along tacony and a water main break blocking the ramp to the eastbound side
4:47 pm
of 76 the schuylkill. get on at broad street instead of 29 1, and balkan close to jaime's deli if you use montgomery as a cut through don't do that today. stick with city avenue instedad this is westchester pike with an accident taking out the left lane and traffic is barely moving through this area at westchester pike and elsewhere the water main break at henderson road and one lane is getting by causing delays at the dannehower bridge and a crash closing 663 head for old bethlehem pike instead. we'll check it again at 5:00. >> thanks matt. meteorologist, adam joseph, is back with the accuweather
4:48 pm
forecast.
4:49 pm
4:50 pm
a slow moving cecily tynan trying to get out of the shot. now to the accuweather forecast we have some -- what is coming? i don't know anymore. >> we are all basically frozen and we can't move all that much. sky 6 hd looking at the del way river at the chunks of ice that are slowly moving toward upstream right now and then as the tide goes out it will head back downstream. at least we see the ice moving that is a good thing. stormtracker 6 live double scan, high clouds south of the city as the storm is just missing us in
4:51 pm
parts of the virginias and carolinas, the high 23 degrees, if only we go back to 1985 that is when hurricane gloria came up the coast it was 74 degrees on that date in 1985 below 7 and shy of the record 23 in trenton and you can see temperatures are pretty uniform area wide and the good thing about today very little wind, and we didn't have much in the way of windchill and the clouds are moving in from the north and west and there is that system with the snow to the south of sussex county and hitting area as long i-95 south and richmond the next arctic front comes through tomorrow and a lot of sunshine and month moisture with it and we'll call it milder around here and we hit 38 degrees and above freezing at this point it feels pretty good, and a wave of low pressure develops along the boundary and
4:52 pm
pushes just to the south on thursday and may just scrape southern areas on thursday morning, most of us it's cloudy and cold, and far south and east of philadelphia could see snow showers to begin the day at 26 degrees, that storm is a big miss or missed opportunity for snow lovers around here to get more accumulation. for tonight stars and clouds, not as brutal tonight and 7 in the suburbs and 17 in center city. the accuweather forecast not as cold tomorrow 38 degrees and thursday cloudy and cold and flurries are around and 26 and if we take a snapshot of future track at 8:30 thursday morning that is as far north as it looks rights now and about dover and millville and atlantic city and all points south and cloudy and cold and on friday more cold sticks around and 26 degrees
4:53 pm
and as we say good-bye to february. when you flip the calendar to march, we jump 10 degrees to 40 and sun giving way to clouds and 46 degrees and a possible mix or rain here on tuesday, of 38 so although sunday starts quiet like a lamb it will roar on tuesday and kinds of unsettled. >> thanks adam.
