and good friday morning to you all and what a friday it's going to be for harrison ford. he is going to be waking up in the hospital. he's at the center of a terrifying real-life drama in the hospital after a crash landing of a vintage plane. >> here's an up close look at that small plane after ford was pulled from the wreckage. you can see the actor laid out on the grass. emergency crews hovering. >> abc's john ehrlichman has the latest. john good morning to you. >> reporter: t.j. and reena, it's been an incredible 4 hours. he is recovering after that dangerous crash landing. harrison ford was strapped to a gurney breathing, unconscious. first responders wheeled him from the wreckage. moments before the crash this was his mayday message. >> engine failure. immediate return. >> reporter: authorities say the 72-year-old lost nrg power wane and was attempting a return but

the plane couldn't make it. >> he clipped the top of a tree and came to rest on the golf court. >> reporter: an eyewitness described the scene. >> he was able to speak. he expressed that he was in pain which was no surprise. he had a significant head wound. >> reporter: the plane ford was piloting was built in the 1940s. he once told barbara walters about his love of flying. >> i love the places you go i love the people in aviation. the people i meet in aviation. i love seeing the world from an airplane. i'm in love with flying. >> reporter: and as the recovery for ford is under way he is here his spokesperson saying he is expected to make a full recovery but the investigators looking into all the reasoning

to skidding into flushing bay. it play have been the weather involved in this but they don't know for sure just yet. more from abc's bazi kanani. >> the airport is closed. >> reporter: the close call at new york's laguardia airport. a delta plane from atlanta crashing through a fence. its nose just feet from the freezing water. >> my first thought was i hope we stop before the water. >> reporter: the 132 people on board escaping by sliding down the plane's wing after emergency chutes failed. parents making it a game for frightened children. >> we told them they slid before. they can slide down a wing. >> reporter: the terrifying landing just after 11:00 a.m. thursday through fog and heavy snow. the plane skidding to the left just seconds after touchdown driving over a snowbank and slamming into the fence. >> you just look at each other like what happened? >> reporter: the cause of the accident still unknown.

the runway had just been plowed and pilots on two other planes that had just landed reported no braking problems. >> one of the puzzling elms is why it veered off the runway when they had still quite a bit of runway ahead of them. >> reporter: one of the country's busiest airports shut down for hours adding to the mounting list of cancellations and delays across the country after this latest winter blast. in just the past two weeks, more than 21,000 flights have been canceled. >> probably going to be spending the night here tonight. >> reporter: misery for travelers stranded at airports millions in the freeze this morning, hoping we have finally seen winter's last punch. bazi kanani abc news washington. >> winter's last punch. we have been talking about that here in the northeast especially. a lot of people sick of the snow and ice. one place that doesn't have enough of it, would you believe, is alaska. >> i don't believe that. >> that's what -- maybe they're trying to make us feel better.

dramatic testimony being delivered at the boston marathon bombing trial of dzhokhar tsarnaev. ten witnesses took the stand yesterday including jeff bauman who lost both legs in that attack pictured being wheeled away by that man in the cowboy hat there. you said he locked eyes with one of the bombers and found it odd that he wasn't watching the race. abc's brian ross spoke with another victim who testified she still hasn't made eye contact with tsarnaev. >> i mean he's destroyed lives. >> reporter: what do you say about the fact he could not look you in the eye? >> i just don't think that he can face what he did. either that or he doesn't care. >> reporter:. >> in an open letter she said it was empowering testifying against him. in another high-profile case jodi arias will not be executed for her crime. a jury in phoenix voted 11-1 in favor of the death penalty. not enough to send her to death row. a judge must now decide between life in prison or parole in 25 years.

train the past few weeks and this could have been a whole lot worse. more than 100 cars in that train were carrying oil. >> the coast guard came to the rescue of a hiker taking a shortcut across a frozen lake. he was spotted on lake st. clair not far from detroit and the coast guard says he wasn't dressed for the weather and wouldn't have lasted much longer out there. the windchill on the lake about 6 below, the 25-year-old american told them he was walking from detroit to toronto. an armed robbery suspect is behind bars after this dramatic high-speed chase in south carolina. police pursued the driver in that white pickup. you see it there in the middle of the screen goes through three county at one point he runs into the median. you see it there, spins around and starts going in reverse in the middle of the highway. the driver finally arrested after crashing into a guardrail. well, now that he's been cleared of domestic abuse charges not yet known when kurt busch will be back on the track. his ex-girlfriend brought abuse claims against him prompting
