>> oh, oh. >> this amtrak train bound for philadelphia derails after colliding with a tractor-trailer in north carolina. monday night jim's off i'm monica malpass. the big story on "action news" tonight is that train collision that sent dozen to the hospital this afternoon. "action news" sharrie williams is tracking the latest developments for us from the satellite center tonight. sharrie. >> monica, this collision happened in the noon hour in halifax north carolina. this particular train was running from charlotte heading north to new york with a scheduled stop in philadelphia around 7:07, so if you have a loved one or a friend who was on board this particular train, we want to stress that amtrak says none of the injuries at this point are life-threatening. these aerials show a chaotic scene in the aftermath of the crash the portion lying on its side is the train's engine, the luggage car is off to an angle on the tracks and behind the luggage car you can see a passenger

car that was also derailed but remained upright. again, this is a collision between amtrak train number 80, the carolinian and a low boy trailer truck. the cab of the truck was intact but the trailer carrying a large load covered in a blue tarp was shredded by the force of the impact. and cell phone video taken by a viewer shows the actual moment of impact. you can see the blue tarp of the tractor-trailer sitting on the tracks when the passenger train comes plowing into it. amtrak says there were 212 passengers on board and eight crew members bringing the total to 220. we now know at this time 55 people were transported to area hospitals with injuries. meanwhile, passengers who are okay were loaded onto waiting buses and moved away from the scene. now, as for what led up to this crash, we're told the trailer was oversized and it was carrying some type of an electrical unit. it was trying to make a turn

over the tracks when it apparently got stuck. we're also hearing the truck was being accompanied by highway patrol because it was oversized. it's not clear, though, whether the police notified amtrak that this particular truck was stuck on the tracks at the time. we're live in the satellite center sharrie williams, channel6 "action news." monica. >> thank you shar referring now to "action news" reporter kenneth moton live at 30th street station with reaction from train passengers. hi kenneth. >> reporter: hi, monica. there was at least one cancellation about an hour ago. that train was heading south. we do not know how many passengers on that derailed train were making philadelphia their final destination but their new arrival time has been pushed back several hours. 30th street station was busy as usual for that evening rush of commuter trains but this time that amtrak crash and derailment in north carolina was on the minds of passengers. >> i feel very sorry for the people that it's affecting and people that are hurt. i hope they're okay, you know. that's all i think about.

>> i just heard about it and i think that the chances are less that i'd be on a trail that would derail than if i were a car driving down the interstate. >> reporter: there were no visible signs of problems at amtrak's ticket counter but one train heading to miami was canceled because of the crash and we were there when passengers area fried florida around 5:00 p.m. they also traveled through north carolina and that derailed train was right behind them. >> i was really, really glad that it wasn't us because usually that's the train that i travel on from jacksonville. >> reporter: amtrak passengers who ride the trains often say that scene down in the carolinas is tragic but when it comes to the safety of rail travel they have no worries. >> i don't think about derailments. i usually feel pretty safe dealing with trains. >> i don't worry about train accidents. i think about trains are faster and get me exactly where i want to go without having to wait in long lines at airports. >> reporter: we don't have

"action news" reporter sarah bloomquist joins us live with more on this tribute. sarah. >> reporter: monica, this crowd behind me growing larger by the minute. we're right outside the game stop store where officer robert wilson, iii was shot and killed on thursday

afternoon. some of his 22nd district officers are on hand, members of the homicide division, the crime scene unit, fop officials and many concerned community members. tonight officer wilson is being remembered as people look for ways to help his two young sons. there is a bullet hole in the front window of the h and r block adjacent to the game stop store where officer robert wilson, iii was shot and killed last thursday afternoon. luckily no one was in the path of that bullet. they had closed early that day because of the snow. >> if i had you ever been sitting there and it came past me like that i would really be no good right now. >> reporter: outside their window the memorial to the fallen 22nd district officer continues to grow larger by the minute. ashley smith brought her two young sons to say a prayer and leave a birthday presents for officer wilson's eldest son who turns 10 today. >> they felt really sad then want to do bring him a teddy bear and wish his son happy birth day. officer wilson stopped in the store to buy a birthday

present for his son on thursday afternoon. police say the two suspects, brothers came in with guns drawn to rob the place. in the fierce exchange of gunfire officer wilson was shot in the head. at the 22nd district flowers and condolences are coming in from around the country. officers from other districts are covering shifts,. counseling is available. the game stop store will be closed indefinitely. the company issued a statement thanking officer wilson for sacrificing his own life to keep their staff and customers safe. >> what we're -- we're very fortunate that we weren't here or no one was hurt but, you know you see the end result and it's very sad. >> reporter: and as we look back live here at hope plaza 21st and lehigh as this vigil gets under way people are stepping up to a microphone to offer prayers and calls for an end to the violence. there are a number of ways to help officer wilson's sons. you can send a check. there's now a go fund me site. we have all that information

on our web site at 6abc.com. game stop also announced today that you can make a donation at any of their local stores. lie in north philadelphia tonight, i'm sarah bloomquist, channel6 "action news." monica. >> thank you sarah. jurors returned a guilty verdict today in the trial of padge windslowe also known as the black madame. windslowe was convicted of third degree murder after she gave an industrial grade silicone buttocks injection that led to the death of a british dancer in 2011. sentenceing is now scheduled for june 11th. windslowe faces 35 to sent years in prison. philadelphia police investigating a shooting here near a north philadelphia elementary school tonight. chopper 6 hd flew over george clymer school about an hour ago. the shooting what reported at 12th and somerset. two victims were shot and rushed to the hospital. no word yet on those folks' conditions or any arrests. at least one gun was recovered at the scene.

a police officer was hurt after his patrol car hit a utility pole, then skidded into a house in camden county this afternoon. the winslow township officer crashed in the 500 block of terrace avenue about 1 o'clock. police say the officer was responding to a crash on berlin cross keys road when he lost control. that officer suffered minor injuries but rescuers did have to cut the roof off the cruiser to help the officer. a family is asking for your help finding a missing montgomery county woman tonight. 20-year-old deidre magalon has not been seen since she left her upper providence home friday. she took her sister's car which was found abandoned on route 4 22 in upper merion. police have now following leads that deidre may have hitch-hiked after experiencing car trouble. she does not have a cell phone. anyone with information on deidre's whereabouts is asked to call 911. the family of the delaware county eighth grader found dead yesterday announced that he took his own life with a gun taken from the home.

an autopsy shows cayman naib died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. the 13-year-old's body was discovered in the woods near his home in newtown square. cayman disappeared wednesday night after receiving an e-mail about some incomplete schoolwork. grief counselors were on hand today to talk to his classmates at the shipley school. coming up on "action news" tonight, crews recover a truck that plunged into a frozen river in ocean county last weekend. and road crews on pothole patrol today patching up the pesky problems left behind by our harsh winter weather. cecily. >> what turn around. felt like spring today. lots of sunshine. 57 degrees but i'm tracking rain on the way. i'll have details on the timing and what's behind this system coming up in the accuweather forecast. >> all right, off to ducis rodgers with the latest eagles roster moves ahead in sports when "action news" continues tonight. >> ♪♪

jacklyn: our middle schools have classes that are devoted for test prep. my kids only have a half a year science and a half a year social studies to make room for preparing for the test. gina: we have no after-school programs, we have no freshman sports, we have no extra anything... okaikor: we're cutting those programs to make way for test prep. and we're not taking in to all the other things that makes a child whole. gina: we are setting our kids up to fail.

>> the truck that plunged into frozen toms river in ocean county last weekend was pulled to shore today. chopper 6 hd above as crews used huge air bags to lift this truck out of the water this morning. a witness told police the truck drove right onto the ice ice on march first. the driver's dog died when that vehicle sank. the owner faces animal cruelty charges. truck was towed to shore in pine beach today. well, the harsh winter weather left behind nasty potholes that drivers are trying to navigate. with warmer temperatures crews were out in force trying to remedy the problem.

"action news" reporter john rawlins has that story tonight. >> reporter: it can be a very rough ride. flooded with melted snow it's impossible to tell how deep a pothole is. the most reviled stretch in this area, the northbound lanes of route 1 near the delco line. furious drivers describe a series of car shaking potholes. >> you slam on the brakes and all of a sudden you bum bum bum like that. it's horrible. >> it's beyond ugly. it takes it to a whole -- i mean we're from the islands and it's like we're picturing the worst part of some country road that you could ever be on and we're thinking we call people back home and say oh, you should come see don't think there's roads like this in america but let me tell you. >> reporter: some say drivers across the center line to avoid the voids. >> horrible. in order to get without hitting a pothole you have to go on over to the oncoming traffic. >> my friend and i, i thought he was going to hit us. it's a mess. >> reporter: this route 1 stretch is a worst case but

you don't have to travel far to find other problems n haverford township penndot workers used tons of asphalt filling potholes. water can prevent a solid bond so crews used blowers before making the patches. the local public works department alerted penndot to 60 significant potholes that have opened up. >> penndot has been really good at responding but the potholes this year seemed to be really bad i guess with the long period of cold weather we had and. >> reporter: and then the thaws in between. >> and the thaws and plowing doesn't help. >> reporter: compared to last year how does this stand. >> i think it's probably worse than last year. >> reporter: back here at route win drivers remain livid asking why there can't be any sort of warning signs put up. penndot said this troubled stretch will be milled and repaved beginning next monday weather permitting. in wynnewood john rawlins channel6 "action news."

it could be significant enough to end his career the lee is waiting for a second opinion from the famed dr. james andrews. the 36-year-old pitcher says surgery would end his season even before it begins and possibly his career. last season lee had to shut it down in late july after elbow problems. the discomfort returned last week following his first spring training start. he is bummed. >> obviously it's very disappointing with all the stuff i did in the off season to prevents something like this from happening. it's frustrating. i mean, it's still a possibility that it's scar tissue and it's normal but there's also a possibility that it's coming back and that's -- that's very frustrating. >> wait and see. phils and orioles in spring training adam morgue gone on the mound. good defense from caesar hernandez. phillies pitching staff combined for a seven hit shutout. lone run comes off the bat of blanco in the fifth inning. solo shot to left field. phillies take it one-nothing.

local boxer steve uss cunningham on the national scene. saturday night in montreal he'll face czar glass go if f. more to cunningham than a pair of blocking gloves: steve cunningham wraps his hand in preparation for the biggest fight of his career but admits it's hard to wrap his head around what he and his family have been around the last few months. the last time we saw his daughter kenny in july she was wait for new heart. at 1:00 a.m. on december 5th the call came and that's when reality set in. >> me and my wife we're trying to hold ourselves together not to like cry or -- 'cause it's an emotional time. i was like this may be the last time. >> reporter: chop wouldn't put her on her transplant list. children's hospital in pittsburgh d cunningham credits those doctors their faith and her daughter's resilience of getting her

loads of sunshine. this is on fairmount park near kelly drive. looking at the schuylkill. and you'll notice that a lot of that ice is melting on the schuylkill. we're getting that nice slow melt. so, that's really helping everything melt without that risk of flooding. accuweather highlights show that we have a touch of spring fever today. our high for philadelphia officially 57 degrees. that's 7 degrees above normal and this is the warmest day in more than two months since january 4th when we hit 58 degrees. so, it's been awhile. tomorrow not nearly as beautiful as today. future tracker showing that we're looking at a good soaking tomorrow, generally about a half inch to an inch of rain. the bulk of that will be in the afternoon and the evening hours. temperatures right now still pretty mild. 56 degrees in philadelphia. you need a light jacket. 55 in millville, 52 trenton. allentown dropped down to 49, reading 51 and wilmington currently 55 degrees. satellite6 along with action radar showing we're just beginning to see some high

thin clouds moving up from the south and west and this is all ahead of a storm system that is just loaded with moisture. satellite6 along with action radar showing some real heavy rain across houston just east of dallas and this rain will be advancing as we head through the day. so, future tracker showing tonight just some clouds around at 7:30, partly cloudy skies, the clouds will thicken and tomorrow the moisture arriving around lunchtime. it starts pretty light some light showers but then it will get heavier as we head through the evening. the 5 o'clock evening commute is going to be a wet one and that rain will continue tuesday night but then on wednesday it will all exit down to the south and wednesday temperatures could hit 60 degrees for the first time this year. so, there is pay back once we get through the rain tomorrow. next 12 hours the clouds move in. it will be seasonably cold. 34 degrees if center city. some cooler suburbs down about 28 degrees so bear in mind we did get that melting today in the cooler suburbs could be a refreeze overnight so do be
